Shaymin, the half-shrub, half-hedgehog legendary Pokémon, has been catchable in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl since 27th February 2022.
All you need to do is open the game, receive the "Oak's Letter" item through the Mystery Gift feature (unlocked after you've played at least 2 hours of the game, no Nintendo Switch Online membership needed) and then you'll be able to catch Shaymin after you've entered the Hall of Fame and obtained the National Pokédex, which you can get by completing the National Pokédex and talking to Professor Rowan.
Oak's Letter, which is the important part of this equation, will only be available until Sunday, March 27th, at 2:59pm UTC / 9:59am EST / 6:59am PST.
Don't forget you can also catch the lil hedgehog guy in Pokémon Legends: Arceus!

Why bother? you can't even use it in the Battle Tower. Imagine banning a Pokèmon in a Single Player game against an A.I, real people I can understand but against an A.I that by all intense and purposes cheats anyway it just seems unfair to me.
Loved the way they removed this stupid restriction in Sword and Shield and I was very disappointed they stuck with it again here like in the original. Shaymin is my favourite Legendary and I really would have liked to of used him in the Battle Tower.
Update BDSP with Home support and maybe I'd remember to boot it up. Arceus has my full attention at the moment
I caught a shiny Shaymin yesterday!
1300 attempts and still no shiny. Continuing the search after today's workout.
These timed events are kind of dumb tbh. Just a way to try to get people to buy these games sooner rather than later, but I bought this game and would prefer to play it and enjoy ALL its features at my own leisure.

Thanks! I totally forgot this and would have been a shame to have missed such an easy Mythical. I really don't care about BDSP (I only bought the game because I've never officially owned a Gen 4 Pokemon title) but I'm glad it's still getting some support.

OK, the wording here is making me insanely confused: once I get Oak's Letter, can I go get Shaymin whenever I want or do I have to get it before March 27th? I'd rather hold on to the event for a rainy day shiny hunt myself and I don't want to have to go for it before a specific date.

@Axecon Same here i had a friend that had a NDS with pokemon Platinum and i was so sad cause i had only an GBSP with Leaf Green, Ruby and Crystal.So after all those years i finally have my gen 4 games and even better,!!!! The only sad thing is that my friend does not have a Switch and doesnt play pokemon anymore !
...Okay, I admit, I caved to FOMO and bought Brilliant Diamond. Now I need to download it onto my system. I was fine with skipping Manaphy, but I'm a fan of Shaymin and won't complain about such a freebie.
@Fizza From what I've read, you should be fine as long as you get Oak's Letter before the cutoff date. You can then do the event whenever you want.
@Tyranexx I did too! Although mostly because most of my friends bought it and we did a Nuzlocke race together which was really fun. I've also never properly played a Gen 4 game (I borrowed a friend's copy of Diamond for a while but never finished) so it was nice to go through formally. I'm really glad that I did end up getting Shining Pearl, because I feel I had a better reception to Legends Arceus seeing how everything connected, that game was the true winner.

@Fizza Just get the Letter via Mystery Gift before the expiration date and you can get Shaymin when you like. It's the same event as the original DS game.

@SugarKane When it comes to the Regional Pokedex in BDSP, you don't need to trade with other people. For Palkia/Dialga, go to Celestic Town and look at a book in one of the houses, it will register it in your dex. For the Lake Guardians, go to the lakes and catch Uxie and Azelf. Mesprit is actually registered when you talk to it rather than catch it so don't worry about that one. Then, check every mon you've missed and check a site like Serebii to see where their designated trainer is. Once that's done, go back to Rowan and claim your reward: the post game!
I got the letter...but haven't gotten around to it. Have to get Acreus version first then go back to D/P for the other one.

@SugarKane yes as @Fizza mentions, you can see every non-legendary pokemon in the Sinnoh Pokedex by battling trainers as part of normal gameplay.
It's worth remembering that the game considers the Sinnoh Pokedex as "done" once you've seen the pokemon, you don't need to actually own it, or even face them in battle in some cases.
@Axecon Nostalgia played a huge part in my case lol. I've played the original Diamond and Platinum, but I won't say no to having a version of my favorite Pokemon generation on the Switch!
My plan is to revisit this installment before jumping into Pokemon Legends: Arceus. It's been many years since I've played the originals.
Why is this a timed event when it's hard coded into the game? Do people forget how up in arms everyone was when Street Fighter X Tekken did this?
@tadams587 on the switch you can have as many save files as you have profiles. If you want to, you could start games on several different profiles, and play each one until you have Mystery Gift unlocked, and then receive these events on all of them for future use.
