The latest Japanese sales figures are live, and for the week of 14th to 20th March, there's a new Square Enix king in town.
Where Triangle Strategy sat at the top a few weeks ago, Jack Garland and his merry band of bros from Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin have thwarted the competition and jumped into first place. That's for the PS4 version, but the PS5 version only sits a few places below in 4th. Total sales for the Team Ninja action RPG sit at 46,849, which is pretty impressive. Nothing less for a Final Fantasy game, even if it is one of chaotic proportions.
That does mean that Square's three-pointed tactical RPG - which we thought was downright marvellous - has slipped to 9th. Pokémon Legend: Arceus is making a bit of a comeback, though, as it leapfrogs back over Elden Ring to sit neatly in 2nd.
- [PS4] Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (Square Enix, 03/18/22) – 28,944 (NEW)
- [NSW] Pokémon Legends: Arceus (The Pokémon Company, 01/28/22) – 23,067 / 2,177,459
- [PS4] Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 02/25/22) – 19,487 / 293,628
- [PS5] Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (Square Enix, 03/18/22) – 17,905 (NEW)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 16,078 / 4,499,542
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 9,755 / 2,561,419
- [PS4] Gran Turismo 7 (SIE, 03/04/22) – 9,447 / 94,818
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 9,111 / 4,813,641
- [NSW] Triangle Strategy (Square Enix, 03/04/22) – 8,429 / 112,107
- [NSW] Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo, 10/29/21) – 8,182 / 912,325
Hardware sales are pretty consistent with the last report, though, with the Switch OLED and Switch staying up top.

- Switch – 19,165 (18,116,589)
- PlayStation 5 – 13,971 (1,239,386)
- Switch Lite – 10,657 (4,635,407)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 2,997 (222,657)
- Xbox Series X – 2,936 (88,985)
- Xbox Series S – 618 (74,915)

3. Switch Lite – 10,657 (4,635,407)
4. PlayStation 5 – 13,971 (1,239,386)
Something's not right there.
Okay, I'm a humanitarian and a biased Switch nerd, but... 10,657 > 13,971?🤔😅
@BenAV @nhSnork Sometimes they list them in groups instead of numbers so it's likely this time they list all the Switch stuffs first and then all the PS5 and Xbox stuffs after.
I went to my local Target, a week ago. Where I purchased by OG Switch. I saw a lot of OG and Oled Switch’s. It was surprising, because I’ve never seen so many, anywhere, at one time. I got rid of my Switch, but I might buy another one. So, I know where to go.
Another landslide success from Square-Enix's Final Fantasy series of games that shouldn't be called Final Fantasy.
FF Origin is honestly rather fun though MK8 Deluxe DLC distracted me from it.
FYI, Stranger of Paradise was developed by Team Ninja, not Ninja Theory.
Anyhow, interested to see what kind of legs it has considering it hasn't had the best of receptions IIRC.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Right. Still wrong to number it like that though if that's why.
Looks like Square's dudebro-fest succeeded afterall. They'll still label it a failure for not selling a billion copies though.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I see.😆 Guess the author was confused as well because Lite "popping PS5 down a spot" with fewer units remains a headscratcher otherwise.
Well... NintenDOMINATE in hardware sales at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places once again... Nice. I like it.
@BenAV It can't be fix unless they merge the numbers with the other two.
@Specter_of-the_OLED That would be the logical thing to do if they were to group them like that. Either that or just don't group them, haha.
I guess the PS4 audience still had not realize that Gran Turismo 7 was a scam. The PS5 players probably see through it and stopped buying the game altogether. Good job Sony and Polyphony, y'all just screw all your loyal GT players.
@BenAV Nope they still had to group them like that, it's the only way to distinguish the Switch Lite from the others. This chart is not a ranking chart, it's a sales chart. It shows you the numbers, not the ranking. Just make your own one if that makes you happy.
46k first week is not impressive at all, it will have a hard time reaching 100k lifetime if it ever reaches that. It failed.
Also, Pokémon Legends was #1 the previous week and dropped by 33%, not a comeback.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I mean just put the Switch Lite under PS5 instead of grouping it with the other Switch units. If it's not a ranking chart then just don't number them at all.
Yo Chaos, I heard you like killing Chaos, so we killed Chaos in your killing Chaos. The characters in Stranger all look like they’re from different games, and all from two generations ago, making the cutscenes a real struggle to sit through even before you get to that dialogue, which is like Devil May Cry taking itself all the way seriously. The combat is fine but I’ll wait until it’s on sale for 20 or less, if I ever get it.
I’m playing Elden Ring until baseball season starts, then it’s “Switch between Pitches” with Triangle Strategy until the Mets are done. Arceus is just waiting to be traded in, I can’t see myself playing it again.
Pretty slow week, even though Switch managed to sell more than 85.000 units.
@BenAV Nope, genuine error copied from the source. I swapped PS5 and the Lite since, yeah, PS5 has the higher figures.
@RR529 Ooops! I got the two mixed up, stupidly. Fixed. Thanks for spotting the error.
It's not a bad game at all but it's not going to hold the top spot for long I don't think.
I’m mildly surprised, tbh.
Japanese market has kinda moved away from home consoles for a while now, plus it is my understanding that FFO is an endearing but deeply flawed game.
I guess the name alone can make wonders.
Strangers of Paradise feels like a bad Nioh game. Not a fan of it.
46k isn't that impressive for such a big IP IMO. If next week Kirby had 46k sales in Japan I don't think it'd be much to celebrate.
So the Switch OLED is about to sell more by itself then the PS5 in Japan. That is impressive all things considered.
“Chaos!” is bomba [at least in Japan] and far from what I would describe as “super effective”.
AAA FF budget game on more platforms on a more mainstream game genre sold less then SE’s Triangle Strategy on just Switch on a more niche game genre. Couldn’t even break 50k combined.
Although it was expected it would sell low in Japan with how Western market pandering it was I didn’t think it would be this low. Hopefully it does better in rest of world, but there is a lot of negative word of mouth spreading for this game in the West already which could kill momentum easily.
Also Arceus in 2nd despite how long it has been out is impressive and already almost sold more then PS4’s “Chaos!” this week
The OLED model has sold more units than every other system combined! Incredible.
I only want one thing
To catch Chaos
These All Caps Titles Are Getting Harder To Read
Glad origins is doing well , the story is pretty basic but the gameplay is very fun , kinda like octopath traveler in a way
In other news, Nintendo Switch will outsell the ps4 THIS YEAR!
@BenAV because ps5 is NOTHING but an oversized ps4 that was unnecessary to be released at the time. Sony should have just milked the ps4 a few more years...at least.
My sister's husband has the ps5 and I seriously thought I was still playing my ps4, when I had it. It Literally has no exclusives at this time.
No Persona 4 Ultimax listing? Or was that for last week?
that's fascinating. I don't see any hype at all for Stranger of Paradise. I might pick it up when there's less to play though
@Bizzyb P4AU didn't get a physical release. Could be why?
@Mando44646 Atlus is so mishandling their Persona brand. They release spin offs on systems without mainline entries and then only release digital.. .what are thinking? 🤔
