@BlueOcean BotW is full to the brim with things to find, do and explore. Yes, I concede that the dungeons weren't great, but dull and empty world? Are you sure you're not talking about every other 3D Zelda world? They're basically a huge, empty hub world that only exists to connect dungeons. Hyrule field in OoT is completely devoid of life. TP is emptiness with random enemies standing around waiting for link to walk by.
This is great news. I'll be getting these for my Xbox, but it's nice the Switch isn't being left out. They should release a TNO/TOB double pack at some point. Prey, a criminally underrated gem, would be good on the Switch as well.
Maybe a Fallout 4 release with a new story that, you know, doesn't completely fall apart halfway through. I'd buy that for Switch.
This is one of the more obvious examples of Wii u owners getting the shaft. Would it really cost that much to put the bonus characters, which have already been created, in the Wii u version via paid dlc?
At least MK8 had been out for over 2 years so it was a bit more forgivable. Either support your game or dont bother releasing it.
Other than Mario, which looks absolutely incredible, and the Doom and Wolfenstein reveals, it was mediocre. 6/10. I despise the battle systems in Xenoblade games, so that did nothing for me.
I hope we get another direct by mid December. 2018 has me worried. Kirby looks rote and Yoshi looked awful at E3. Octopath Traveler looks neat, but they want feedback? Oh, boy. Knowing Sqeenix, summer at the earliest.
I don't know how any times this point needs to be made:
Xbox One/PS4 don't REQUIRE you to buy additional storage to play any game. They come with a minimum 500GB of storage out of the box. If space is running low, you can uninstall games you haven't played and still keep your saves. You are NEVER forced to buy additional storage. Is it really that hard to grasp? Enough with the false equivalency.
Sure, 64 or 128GB micro SD cards are reasonably priced, but with policies like this, how long will a 64 GB micro SD card last over the long term?
What if you want a 256GB card? Well, that's when the reasonable prices stop. Those are well over $100. Some are close to $200.
Nintendo could have eliminated this frustration by allowing us to purchase a switch that had 64 or 128 gb of built in storage. Or bundled a 16 gb micro SD card with a switch. Heck, my $80 2ds came with a 4 gb SD card.
The difference between this and PS4/ Xbox one is that they come with a minimum of 500 gb hard drives to store games. You can manage your storage if you don't want to buy an external hard drive.
I would add that the middle market is all but gone and has been for quite some time. It's coming back, but very slowly. That is a real problem with gaming today. Everything is either a huge, AAA blockbuster or tiny 8-bit or 16-bit indie project with not much in between.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree with this. Nintendo-only gamers are missing out on a lot and vice-versa. To really have the best experience, you really need more than one console or platform.
Buggy, unfinished, and incomplete games, pay-to-win DLC and amiibo locked content are a blight as well.
Gaming has been great for most of this century. It stumbled a bit in 2011, 2012, 2013, but it picked right back up.
It's a robust industry with an unbelievable amount of choice. It's the only industry I can think of where selling 30 million (Xbox One) of something is considered a failure.
Meh, to me it's still a massive lump of unrealized potential. The UI is as spartan as it gets. Sterile is a great description. The Nintendo Tax (ex: Sine Mora, Cave Story+) is a real slap in the face. No classic Nintendo games. Neo geo games that have been available for everything under the sun...
Gotcha. Makes more sense. Yes, major game development is getting more and more complex. Gamers are getting more and more demanding. There aren't enough resources and talent to adequately support 2 platforms. I agree. Mobile gaming is here to stay as well.
I like my Switch a lot. There's so much potential. Once Nintendo shifts most of their resources to focus on it, it will be great.
@Turbo857 The Switch is 1Tflop while docked, but .33 Tflops in portable mode, which is a core feature. Devs will need to consider that when making games for it.
I hope the Switch doesn't see many hardware revisions, but I know it will. Maybe a home and go model 2-3 years down the line, but that's it. The screen size is near perfect, but making it smaller might pose some challenges. Zelda is hard enough to see and appreciate as it is.
Just focus on the Switch and the games. No need for a 3DS successor. I do think they support the 3DS through 2018 to keep the budget/entry level option open until the Switch can see a price drop.
@PorllM The PS4 is already close to eclipsing PS3 numbers. The Xbox was on pace with 360 sales, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. The Switch is selling fast and mobile gaming is cooling.
I don't see why this gen can achieve a similar level of success.
@greengecko007 Exactly. Don't forget to factor in Japan's crazy work culture. 12-14 hour days are normal. People literally work themselves to death. I can't imagine the pressure a guy like Iwata could have been under, especially after the rocky 3DS start and Wii U debacle. The Wii U, in particular, was very weird. Clearly there was some internal strife about it inside Nintendo.
FWIW Nintendo Life liked Oddworld for Wii U. 8/10. Certainly not a bad game. So they did make a good game. No one bought it. So comments that they made a bad game are off base.
Then there was the article in Eurogamer a few years ago about how unresponsive Nintendo was with helping third parties develop for Wii U and how slow the dev kits were. Then, a while back, I read somewhere that Nintendo takes a bigger cut than Sony or MS do from third party sales. Then you add the smaller, more expensive game cards, which I'm sure third parties have to pay for, It's not hard to see why third parties are in "wait and see" mode or even "not a chance in heck" mode. Most third parties don't have the cash that Nintendo does to make games for their system and are one good flop away from going out of business.
Love the concept, don't like the execution. The price is too high for what it is. I have a red 2DS and this would have to be $129 USD at most, not $149 USD for me to even entertain this. I might as well splurge and get the more feature-rich and aesthetically pleasing N3DS XL. We're only getting the black and blue version here in the US. Something about that black and blue together is... off-putting. That blue d-pad looks gross. Wish we were getting more color variants. I'll just stick with my red 2DS for a while. Still loving it.
@Faruko The cheapest RX 480 on newegg is $639 USD. $140 USD more than the One X. $249 just for a gpu to game at 1080/60 isn't some great deal. It's half the cost of the One X! Once you add the other required components, you'll be well past $499. You're making a great case for the One X.
Most consumers will be attracted to the cost, easy setup and use that the console will provide over PC. Either way, whether you choose PC or Xbox, Microsoft wins.
It really makes no sense for Microsoft to keep expensive first party software off the PC, a platform they completely dominate. Options are good.
Nintendo, otoh, will have us pay for LttP and MK64 for the 3rd or 4th time.
Microsoft is PC and Xbox. They win either way. Console gaming is still much more elegant and user friendly than PC gaming, which appeals to a lot of people. The Xbox One X has a place and it won't stay $499 (which isn't even that bad tbh) forever.
Will it be a smash hit? Maybe. Maybe not. Xbox has addressed all their hardware concerns, now it's time for them to focus on software. I'm confident we'll see many more first party games from MS in the coming years.
It's a good time to be a gamer. It's a bad time to be a fanboi.
Looking very fun. I'm definitely getting this. The second a proper Pikmin 4 is announced for Switch, the second it becomes a must buy for me! I love Pikmin!
I think the odds of Nintendo actually producing and shipping anything close to 18 million in FY 2017 are very long indeed. Their earlier estimate of 7 million is probably much more accurate. 10 million seems like a stretch at this point.
Did Nintendo not know Apple and Samsung would be making things? Apple puts out a new iPhone almost every year. Did Foxconn not properly advise Nintendo?
Producing more Switches isn't a huge financial risk to Nintendo. They have no choice. The Wii U is dead and the 3DS is on advanced life support. Switch and mobile are the future. They've already spent oodles of cash on Super Bowl ads, commercials, reveal events, and celebrity endorsements. Now they have all this demand they aren't even close to fulfilling. What's more damaging? Frustrating potential buyers (and possibly driving them elsewhere) or producing 3-5 million extra Switches for the launch window that are most likely sold?
MS gives XBL members 4 free games every single month, many of which are very good, and 360 GwG you keep forever, (worth the $5 per month all by itself). Also, access to some really nice game sales on old and new games, which, of course, you keep forever even if you don't renew.
$20, while very cheap in comparison to $60, still isn't very good value considering they're only allowing "access" to NES games and online play. Meaning you'll no longer have access if you don't renew, similar to PS+ and XBL. Nintendo's language referring to SNES games isn't very encouraging. SNES, GB, GBA, N64, Wii, and DS games will still have to be bought at some price TBD if at all. Still no word on Gamecube games.
It's cheaper, but you get less. Makes sense.
PC will likely always have free online, so theres always that.
Love the IDEA of a "New" 2DS XL, but the black and "neon" blue color scheme for us here in the US...bleh. Plus, I love the slate, non-clamshell design of my 2DS.
Not getting one until it gets a price cut and new colors....
So maybe never. Luckily, I still have my red 2DS, which is excellent.
This shouldn't be a controversial move. Nintendo always has numerous iterations of it's handhelds. If this affects the Switch at all, which it shouldn't, what does that say about the Switch?
I like it, but I LOVE my 2DS in large part because of the wedge design and lack of clamshell.
The clamshell DS design always feels off-balance to me and the top screen is always exerting force on your hands for which you have to compensate. Gets uncomfortable for my big hands after long periods of time. The 2DS fits into my hands with plenty of room on the back for all of my fingers to rest comfortably and grip the unit.
Also, the price, while not outrageous, is still not a good value. The $79 2DS comes with and charger, sd card and MK7. Incredible value proposition.
N2DSXL comes with no game for almost twice the price. Not worth it to me. I won't even think about this until it's closer to $99.
Also, not impressed with the color options I've seen so far. That will probably change, so not a big issue.
I still don't see any N3DS or N3DSXLs in my area. Nintendo needs to get their supply issues under control ffs
The masses won't be buying the Switch. Dedicated handheld gaming is all but dead everywhere outside of Japan. Most Nintendo fans don't realize this.
BotW, one of the best games I've played in years, would be horrible to play on the go. All the distractions of being "in the wild" would ruin any sense of immersion for me.
I don't think the Switch is some grand "dare to be different" design choice by Nintendo.
Nintendo created the Switch because portables in Japan are king. Consoles are dead there. The PS4 has barely outsold the Wii U in Japan. Say what you will, the Switch is an incredibly powerful handheld console you can seamlessly connect to your TV. Nintendo also knows it can't support 2 platforms at a time. They chose to go with their strength in handhelds.
I think Nintendo cares about other markets, but not as much as their home market. They need to stay strong in Japan and I think that is very important to Nintendo.
@nhSnork The Xbox One has shipped nearly 30m consoles (maybe more). Well past double the Wii U sales with a year less time on the market. With the Scorpio, Xbox One will sell at least 50m units by the time its all said and done.
If Nintendo would re-enter the power race at any given point and release a console beyond Scorpio, many people now saying power doesn't matter, would suddenly care about power.
Power isn't a bad thing. Any game can benefit from additional power, including Nintendo games. BotW is amazing on my Wii U, but it would be even more amazing in 1080p locked 30fps (even 60fps) with great anti-aliasing. It would be an objectively better experience.
Nintendo chooses to go the beat of their own drum. That strategy has mixed results. It's succeeded marvelously and failed miserably. Nintendo chose to exit the power race. They choose to make hardware that is different in power and concept.
None of that is bad, but Nintendo forces it's fans to defend whatever decision they make because they make such good games.
Also, depending on price and if it has mouse and keyboard support, Scorpio could be a better value than a gaming PC. $499 or less would be that. MS has sold consoles at a loss for most of it's existence. It's not unthinkable that Scorpio could be sold for a surprisingly reasonable price to woo gamers back to the Xbox brand.
Also, it won't be the Xbox One or One S holding Scorpio back. If PS4 Pro "support" is any indication, third parties will be the ones holding Scorpio back, eg: From Software's disappointing PS4 Pro patch...

Re: Metroid: Samus Returns Makes Modest Chart Debut in Japan, as Switch Still Dominates
Why do we care about Japanese sales so much? Don't NA and Europe dwarf them in terms of market share? Japan is a tiny sliver.
Is it just because they release hard numbers?
Don't get me wrong, it's fun to look at and discuss, but Metroid succeeding in the west is far more important than it succeeding in Japan.
Totally digging Samus Returns btw. It"s amazing.

@ValhallaOutcast My Xbox One S is one of the quietest disc based consoles I've ever owned. Much quieter than the Wii U.
Re: Hey! Pikmin will Launch with New amiibo on 28th July
@gcunit I'll be playing on my 2DS, so its a non-issue for me.
Can't wait for more Pikmin!
Re: Talking Point: PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio Draw Battle Lines, But Nintendo Goes Its Own Way With Switch
Re: Talking Point: PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio Draw Battle Lines, But Nintendo Goes Its Own Way With Switch
Let us be honest.
Re: Poll: What Wii U Ports Would You Like to Play on Nintendo Switch?
@GooRoo
It's okay. Most people that bash SFZ haven't played it either.
