Same thing happened recently with Halo Wars 2. It's biggest transgression was to dare being a console RTS. Every review made mention of it in a negative way.
I also think the same happened with Star Fox Zero last year. It dared to be a single player focused arcade shooter with quirky motion aiming controls. Giant Bomb even said it was the Star Fox game we wanted... in 2005...
Both games have flaws, sure, but I don't think either had a realistic chance of reviewing well given their niche nature.
Same is happening here with Yooka Laylee. If you like this kind of game and like what you've seen in the previews, you'll probably get your money's worth.
I lucked out with the Hinox. I took out the higher Bokoblin encampment before I fought the Hinox. I took an explody barrel down to blow him up all sneaky-like. I shot it with a couple arrows and only succeeded in waking him up. I started attacking it then noticed the it was about to do it's ground pound move.
Lucky for me the barrel had rolled directly underneath him and i ran away. The Hinox ground pounded the barrel and it exploded (of course) and burnt off his shin guards.
He still had a lot of health left, but it was basically over at that point. I had a couple decent weapons and a fair amount of arrows.
A glorious swan song for an underrated, under-supported console. The addition of BotW takes the Wii U game library from merely very good to truly great.
The frame rate is quite noticeable in most towns (Korok Forest is pretty bad) and some divine beasts (Vah Naboris), but for the vast majority of the time the frame rate is a steady 30 fps. Fine with me. I've enjoyed games with far worse performance.
I occasionally play on the Gamepad, and I am surprised by how good the screen is and how nice the game looks. Portability isn't much of a consideration for me. I like to lay on the couch and play, which the Gamepad allows me to do comfortably.
Overall, it's a masterpiece of a game that I'm compelled to play into the wee hours of the night. The scores of 10 are certainly warranted.
I'll get a Switch, with BotW, some day. But until then, I'll continue having a blast playing this on Wii U.
Side note: I saw an interesting video comparing HZD to BotW in terms of detail of the environment. While HZD is better looking and performing, BotW blows it out of the water in terms of detail, physics and interactivity. HZD is a beautiful, hollow shell, while BotW feels more like a real place.
I have the Wii U version. Yes, there are long spans of time in towns and stables @ 20 fps. I does bother me occasionally, but overall it's an immensely enjoyable game on Wii U. Once you get out into the world, there aren't many significant drops and is smooth for the most part.
I think the previous DF video mentioned that the Wii U version is running with a double buffered v-sync enabled, so it goes from 30 to 20 fps and not much in between. That's the source of a lot of these drops.
I'm not an expert, but are these issues patchable?
EDIT: I have also played a lot on the gamepad and performance does seem to improve to a mostly solid 30fps. These are still drops in the towns, but far less frequent. Then again, maybe they're harder to make out on the small 480p screen.
Never had an issue with disc rot. It's been a know problem for a while. Discs have always been fragile, but cost and storage trump durability.
Just don't be careless with your collection. Hold a disc by the edges and never touch the under side. Always keep discs in a hard case when it's not in the disc drive being played. Keep them in a temprate, dry area of your home. Not too hard to do honestly.
Extreme humidity, heat and cold are hard on all electronics.
I wish they would as well. At this point, after so many major third parties have said they have "no plans" for porting their big games to the Switch, it's reasonable to assume that Nintendo is doing it for a reason.
The reason is that indies are likely going to be a majority of third party, non-Nintendo support.
@RadioHedgeFund I agree with most of this, but the Switch's competition is mobile AND PS4/XB1. They took that upon themselves with this hybrid business.
Of course it's not a deal breaker, but shouldn't electronics companies want their customers to interact with their products as much as possible? Given the Switch's portable nature and touch screen, having additional functionality only makes sense.
For crying out loud, Netflix, YouTube, and web browsing are on the 3DS. I don't have a smart TV, so I use my Wii U and Xbox One to stream content from Hulu and Netflix almost every day. I don't need a blu ray or dvd player precisely because the gaming devices i own perform that function.
Imagine if a phone manufacturer made a smart phone that could only make calls and couldn't access the internet or uses apps of any kind. Then they charged full market price. Do you think that would be a successful company?
Nintendo is basically forcing their customers to buy other devices made by other companies to do basic things the Switch ought to be able to do. Don't be surprised if/when customers actually take you up on that, Nintendo and skip the Switch altogether.
This is the Gamecube all over again.
Everyone: "Cool, I can play DVDs on my PS2 and Xbox!"
Nintendo fanboys: "Want to watch a DVD? Get a DVD player, idiot! Mini discs are the future! Less is more!"
To the topic, I think it's a handheld at heart. Home consoles are generally intended to be used in the home with a TV. Home consoles also don't have screens built into them. It's the most powerful handheld ever. That's not a bad thing, but it's true.
@rjejr
I agree with this. Lovely how the US is getting price gouged.
Why does everything have to be in $50 increments? A $269 or $279 launch price would incredibly competitive and boost perceived value. Nobody could female dog about price at that point.
Spot on. Confidence in the Nintendo brand could be at it's lowest point ever. The Switch presentation did nothing to change that as reactions, by and large, are mixed even within the Nintendo community. As a Wii U owner, Nintendo has given me no reason whatsoever to run out and buy a Switch before Odyssey comes out. Despite what delusional fanboys say, BotW looks almost identical to the Wii U version with an extra 180 vertical lines of resolution. Somehow I'll slog through at 720p.
(Let me just pause to mention the hypocritical fanboys who insisted for the Wii U and still insist for the Switch that graphics and resolution don't matter, yet have no problem telling the world how "clearly inferior" the Wii U version is and they can't wait to play "the definitive version" on Switch.)
I know why they pulled the Wii U. It's because they didn't want Wii Us sitting on store shelves at $299 (ridiculous) after they've announced a new console for the same price. Also, the Switch will be SCARCE at launch (thanks to underproduction to create artificial scarcity) and people who still want to play Zelda may have purchased a Wii U for the opportunity. Nintendo didn't want that to happen. They would be perfectly content NOT selling one more single Wii U.
That's what Nintendo says, but they are still making 3DS games and lets not forget mobile. That will command more devs when/if it become more successful. I think the Switch will see more support, but I doubt it will be a huge difference.
The N64 and Gamecube didn't fail because they were trying to compete on power, they failed because they used expensive and inferior media for those systems. The Gamecube also lacked basic features the others had as well.
A $600 phone that can make calls and texts, surf the net, connect to Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, youtube as well basically be a complete computing experience in the palm of your hand.
All things Nintendo just confirmed the Switch can't do. Yikes.
I agree with almost everything you say here. And, to clarify, I really like the Switch. I will probably wait to buy for a number of personal and gaming reasons. I will be getting BotW for my Wii U. I knew that well before the presentation.
My larger point was to the comment above and to the shameful reactions toward honest, well founded criticism of the Switch and Nintendo in general.
@KirbyTheVampire It is reasonable, and I'm glad you see that, but the Switch exists within the context of the Wii Us failure. We can't pretend that it didn't happen.
Taken within the context that new, meaningful Wii U development ceased a year ago at a minimum, why wasn't more shown at the presentation? Zelda had to be there, obviously. Arms, Splatoon 2 and Xeno 2 look good and enticing, but Mario Kart is a port. Odyssey is 8 months away from launch. There's, what? 25 games in the first 9 months in total? Many are niche titles. It's a bit of a letdown. There were no real surprises. No dormant franchises resurrected. Online is still shrouded in mystery just 45 days away. Tech crammed in for apparently just to bloat the price....
@Syrek24 You represent all that is wrong with Nintendo fandom.
You are an apologist of the highest order. Unfortunately your attitude likely represents Nintendo's attitude toward their own fans. So, someone who is genuinely upset with how Nintendo incompetently bungled the Wii U and had hope that they would make a good faith effort is and entitled brat?

Nintendo has done more than their fair share to bring down the industry. They may not be as bad as EA, Activision or Ubisoft, but they're not far behind.
The real tragedy is that Nintendo, with all of their first party IPs, could totally dominate the entire gaming market if they just stopped volunteering to be the red-headed step child.
Complaining about a $10 game on a $400 to $800 Apple device is hilarious.
This is a mobile game through and through. Cramming a console style Mario on a phone would have been much worse. It should have more levels though. 24 seems a bit on the low side, and we know Nintendo can churn out hundreds of interesting 2D platforming levels.
"Not the sales, not the negativity, and certainly not the toxic fanbase."
It seems you have something in common with Nintendo. They don't care about sales, negativity or their fans either!
Do you really think MK8 or Smash 4 will stand the test of time once their inevitable successors release? Or mario maker for that matter? Maybe DKTF will, but the others likely won't.
Nintendo definitely has NOT learned it's lesson. The continued secrecy of the Switch, expecting people to buy an entirely new system rather than fix the current one, and add in, what will be viewed by many, another gimmick, Nintendo hasn't learned a thing. If anything the Switch is aimed squarely at the Japanese market. It is after all the only placed the Vita didn't fall flat on it's face. Westerners aren't going to lug around an 8 inch tablet just to play games.
At least Sony tried to right the PS3 ship and was rewarded. Nintendo just...yeah.
Unfortunately, that's exactly where Nintendo is headed. They are going to become a mobile game developer sooner than we think or want to admit.
The Switch will have many of the same issues as the Wii U. The dedicated handheld market all but dead (recent sales of 3DS confirm this) and it won't have to power to keep up with the home console offerings of Sony and Microsoft. "Casuals" have been gone for a very long time. Sad but true.
@gcunit THIS. At least Igarashi did it early, though not officially (what are they waiting for?). To do this 4 months from release? Very shady thing to do. Maybe 5-6 months ago, it would have been more forgivable. Now? Not so much.
@therealgamer Whatever you say. You really think Bloodstained, which was recently delayed to 2018, will release on Wii U? That's cute. Darksiders 1 has been delayed indefinitely. Still no hard date for that release. All signs point to Switch on that. Yooka Laylee and Hive Jump will likely come to Wii U, but also likely before BotW releases.
I'll be as happy as anyone if Nintendo does some early cross gen with Wii U and Switch (especially Pikmin 4 and this new Mario game), that will make the decision to keep my Wii U around that much easier, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
@rjejr Apples to oranges. The Switch is a dedicated gaming device. The iPad can do (almost) everything a laptop or PC can do and take decent pictures. Phablets can do all of that plus make phone calls. You can game on those, too. Those service a lot of different needs. Big difference. The market for tablets and phablets is much bigger than a gaming device.

So digital triggers killed the GC VC in the Wii U. Digital triggers should kill it on the Switch as well, no?
Also, did fans make up that excuse, or did Nintendo confirm that as the reason?

Phablets can do all of that plus make phone calls. You can game on those, too. Those service a lot of different needs. Big difference. The market for tablets and phablets is much bigger than a gaming device.
