Pokémon-like games have really caught on over the past few years, and one, in particular, that got quite a bit of attention last October was Monster Crown - an eShop release we described as "a jankier and less addictive version of the oldest Pokémon games" that took us back to the 8-bit Pokémon days.
If you're wondering what's next for the game's developer, Jason Walsh, and Monster Crown in 2022, it seems there are plans for "several new exciting announcements", as well as versions of the game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There'll also be ongoing improvements and significant content updates.
Here's the message in full, along with the tweet:
Dear Monster Crown Fans,
We're not slowing down anytime soon - in 2022 Monster Crown will continue to improve and receive significant content updates, tailor-made to please monster veterans and new tamers alike based on the requests you've sent me across all platforms.
Thank you so much for all of your support in 2021.
In 2022 I look eagerly forward to bringing Xbox One and PS4 Players to our world - as well as sharing several new exciting announcements.
Thank You!! Jason Walsh, Developer
Have you given this Pokémon-style experience a go yet? What else would you like to see from this game and developer in 2022? Leave your thoughts down below.

I haven’t put much time into it yet. Most of us Switch backers didn’t even get our copies until the week of Christmas. A lot of backers weren’t happy about that, as we literally backed it and didn’t get it until months after release.
To the dev’s credit, it wasn’t entirely their fault, they were having trouble getting the eShop keys from Nintendo, but I haven’t heard of other games having this problem so it feels like they didn’t really plan ahead in terms of ordering them… frustrating all around… but worth noting this because it seems like nobody outside of the backers was aware they were screwed for a few months…
I skipped on this because it released so close to Pokemon BDSP and they actually charged a lot more on Switch compared to other platforms which is something I don't want to support. The game looks good though so I'll get it during a sale down the line. Maybe all these updates will be released by then aswell
@MajinSoul if it helps, physical version for Switch is on sale at GameStop right now for cheaper than the Steam version.
'inspired' lol. Not sure folk know what that word means these days lol.
I feel like there are a few companies over the last few years who are like "I think we could do the stuff Pokemon fans want Pokemon to do." I'm a diehard Poke-fan, but it should be interesting to see how the next 5~10 years play out. I don't think anyone will topple the king, but a valiant prince may emerge.
ah yes, the game backed by kickstarter that has a clear anti capitalist, pro socialist message in the form of a really bad strawman in the first like, 10 minutes of the game. the comedy writes itself.
i'm not even all that pro one way or the other, but when a game makes a really bad strawman in the first half hour, its hard to take it seriously. It took me out of the experience, god forbid anything be about escapism.
Also, the games not that good either.
@CactusMan Yeah, I’m not understanding their point either. The miner guy was a jerk and got eaten by sea monsters as a result, dunno what this has to do with anti-capitalism.
I’m having fun making new monsters. The high-temperature breeding is interesting and getting to see traits and colors early is nice, though it makes me feel a little bad somehow.
I don't support plagiarism, sorry.
When a fan game uses assets from a Nintendo property and gets shut down: "Wow what a waste. They should have changed enough to make it their own game."
When a fan game changes enough to make it their own game: "This is uninspired and/or plagiarism"
@CactusMan I like that the miscellaneous options weren’t locked behind a New Game+ here. Nexomon: Extinction had that problem, and I don’t always have time to replay stuff.
