Soedesco has announced that pre-orders for Monster Crown, the Pokémon-like monster collecting game from developer Studio Aurum, will go live on Nintendo Switch today.
The game's been in the works for some time now, with a Kickstarter campaign going live back in 2018, and we actually shared an exclusive look at some of the game's monsters shortly afterwards. Now, we're just weeks away from seeing the game land on Switch, with a 12 October release date locked in.
If you need a quick catch up, here's a quick synopsis and feature list:
Unravel Crown Island’s dark story as you create your own monster legacy. With a history of sadistic rulers and heroic saviors, the island faces another threat in the form of a malicious young woman seeking power. It’s up to you and the monsters you make pacts with to prevent the return of tyranny. Will your decisions make you a savior or a dark messiah?
Features
- Make pacts with monsters to receive their protection in return for shelter
- Breed and fuse over 200 base monsters to create your own new species
- Travel across Crown Island with your monster allies to uncover a dark world
- Choose a pivotal decision that will drastically change the ending and post-game
- Play online to battle and trade, and have your new species reach across the globe
In recent weeks, the development team has been sharing new looks at the game over on YouTube, including the opening cinematic you can see below.
If you've been on the lookout for something similar yet different to Pokémon, this could be a good shout. We'll make sure to share a review of the game for you a little closer to release.

Wow, that dragon on the right gives me some nostalgia but I have no idea why. Reminds me of Digimon/Pokémon and a bit of Dragonball with it's design.
Art and sprite work are nice, but the designs themselves seem super uninspired.
In before people call this original game a "pokemon killer" or a "Pokemon clone", when the thing is it's own game entirely, with it's own unique mechanics.
Anyways, I have the game on steam, and it's pretty good. Probably going to reset my progress, since the breeding system changed immensely from the first time I played it.
@Munchlax The designs are actually pretty great. The ones shown in this article aren't really the best, but there are a bunch that I still remember being pretty well made. Some are fairly basic since there's a breeding system that makes new monsters.
Luffy went from pirating to catching pokemon?
This game is amazing. I can’t wait for the Switch version!
Hopefully it's better than Nexomon. But literally any Pokemon-inspired game I've played has been better than Nexomon, so....
@moodycat The Steam version is in Early Access, and they're often cheaper because the game is not finished and may be buggy and unpolished.
I've been trying to find a place to pre-order the EU physical release of Monster Crown, and for some reason the only place I can find it is on Play-asia.
That's so strange that I may have to import an EU copy from there.
@moodycat Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. That's what happened with many games (like Hades, Noita etc).
I've backed the project and even got access to the demo version. Am I supposed to already have the code for the Switch version somewhere in my email?
@moodycat where are you getting the Switch price from out of curiosity? I cannae find it.
Was literally thinking today about searching for a Pokémon-like indie title to sink my teeth into. Looks like my hunt is over. Definitely gonna check this out, even if October is already a horrifically packed month!
Looking forward to a review of this one!
So looking forward to this game. Not sure which console to grab it on as I've wanted a solid pokemon like experience not on a Nintendo console given they (the genre) are rare to find on other consoles
I saw this one's getting a physical release, which I'd love to pick up! That being said, October's pretty packed and the D/P remakes are coming a month after, so I might hold off a little bit on this one. It's definitely on my radar, though!
@VoidofLight In before people call this original game a "pokemon killer" or a "Pokemon clone",
Why do people do this?
YOU are the first one to say 'Pokemon Killer' and 'Pokemon Clone'.
@Crono1973 I was the first one to say it here, but not the first one to call the game that.
Sorry for expecting people to trash this game because it's a monster collector, since people usually do.
Hope to see what the Physical release is like.
@VoidofLight You can expect anything you want but when you pull this 'in before someone says something I won't like' nonsense, I get to make fun of you.
Might get it if it's cheaper than Pokémon I like Pokémon but not enough to spend £50 on it
A nice callback to the older gens of Pokemon, the overworld gameplay looks very GBA-ish which I like. Definitely interested in checking this out when it comes to the Switch.
