These are not bad sales. At 3rd spot right after the handhelds, it's the best performing home console in Japan. And many people bought Super Mario 3D World that already had a Wii U apparently.
This is the first Persona game on a Nintendo console, so it's certainly good news. I've never played a Persona game before, but it looks very interesting. Hope it reaches our shores.
That's just one particular market, one that the Xbox brand has conquered the past generation if I'm not mistaken. Meanwhile in Japan... And the "PC Twins" will have very good launch window sales, Wii U had very good sales last year too. I'm more keen in what happens in a couple of months into 2014.
@FineLerv Let me guess, Nando's? Oh, well... The influence of Portugal to world's history goes far beyond grilled chicken and this game seems to be proof of that, being set in the Age of Discovery. Portugal is severely underrated. Looks really cool and I dig the history lesson side of it and all, but it's just not my kind of game, gameplay wise. And if you like our chicken... boy, you haven't lived till you try our codfish.
@Nareva Play him off, GamePad cat! Seriously, I think it's time for Amazon to start selling Wii U again. 3D World will quickly become the best selling Wii U game at least.
@Bliquid Is the Vita TV compatible with the Vita gamecards or you have to download the digital versions from Sony shop? Since it's to be played with a PS3 controller, what happens with Vita games that use the touchscreen/backpanel? Can you use the PS4 controller that has a touchpad? Will I be able to play Tearaway with Vita TV? What about Gaikai, can you play PS3 or PS4 games with just this device, streaming like "OnLive" or you need to have a PS3/PS4 at your household? So many questions, I wasn't that into Vita TV but if the answers to all these are yes, then it a very compelling proposition.
I think Wii U will achieve second place, close to PS4. The Xbox One I think it's going to be the loser of this generation, It's more expensive, it's a little less powerful than a PS4, it's launching late in several key markets, has already lost in Japan and has no game that stands out. Outside of the Microsoft faithful, I don't find it being appealing. But that's just my humble opinion, 'kay people, don't get mad at me.
Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 3 is the Mario game I've been waiting for since Wii U was announced. Nothing wrong with 3D World, I'm sure it's quite brilliant as well, but Galaxy was just grand.
I only saw two commercials for Wii U so far. One for ZombiU last year and one for Lego City this Spring. Their marketing strategy is non-existent.
It's so sad, because I believe that with proper marketing the console could sell very well. Wii had an amazing marketing campaign at launch, what happened now? It's not like they don't have the money to invest in marketing, geez...
We've already had Mario without Miyamoto before. The Game Boy games were Gunpei Yokoi's creations. And Super Mario Land 2 is still one of my favourite games of all time. I would like Nintendo to make a Super Mario more inspired in the stages, power ups and enemies of Super Mario Land 1&2, they are something apart from the rest.
We need to prepare for the eventual retirement of Miyamoto. I'm confident he left some very competent people like the team at EAD Tokyo and Aonuma to continue the legacy. I still hope we get to see a new franchise from the master.
I just bought this on Wii with some spare Wii Points I had. It's my final purchase before I move on to Wii U. Never played a Mega Man game before, and damn this is hard! Hard and addictive.
I'll be honest. I've never played a Digimon game before, but as a kid, I was glued to the screen for the anime series. As I only owned a Game Boy, I played Pokémon like everyone, but was always jealous of my classmates with a Playstation because that's where the Digimon games were. If only they were also made for Nintendo 64 too. Digimon on Game Boy Colour would be a perfect fit, perhaps they didn't want to take their chances against the behemoth that was Pokémon. Again, the other side of the coin was that my Playstation-owning classmates who did not have a Game Boy, were probably jealous of Pokémon too.
Never played this, but hey at least a decent NES game. Looks better than "Yoshi", which we got for ambassador's programme and 0.30 cents promotion. Still, all the NES games should be cheaper, let's say €4 for the basic price, and some of the earlier, more basic ones like Donkey Kong or Tennis, never more than €2. If games like Earthbound can be priced higher than the regular SNES game, why can't some games be priced cheaper, Nintendo?
@zool You know what they say, quality comes at a price. Console games have always cost around this much, but now the developing costs are going even higher. So, why should they sell their games cheaper when they spend considerable resources on them? Feel free to play whatever you want on Android, but whenever you want real games, be prepared with your wallet. Comparing Wind Waker with Android games, ROFL.
I believe Nintendo will have a good holiday season for Wii U this year, but 9 million consoles sold from April, 2013 to the end of March, 2014 is just an outlandish prediction. Not gonna happen. Not even Iwata must believe that, they should rectify that now so that they don't look bad next year. Right, now they're sitting at 4 million consoles of total userbase. If the Wii U userbase grows to 7 million by the end of this calendar year, I'd call that a success.
Home console gaming is dying in Japan. I doubt the Playstation 4 will fare much better, once it lands there in 2014. (A Japanese company skipping Japan on the launch of it's next big thing. I'd say the writing is on the wall.) And the Xbox One will be oblivious once more to the Japanese folks. Sad, but true.
This will have to compete with Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed on the wallets of many, which can already be found pretty cheap. Anyone who wants an early fix of Mario Kart-ness, should really get All Stars, it's really good.
I'm still getting one this Christmas. I trust Nintendo will keep support for it on a minimum 5 year cycle. This is no Saturn or Dreamcast scenario (SEGA does what Nintendon't, you know?). GameCube sold poorly but Nintendo never gave up either and it has easily one of the most interesting game libraries. As long as things on the handheld front are fine and dandy, having a poor selling home console is a luxury Nintendo (unlike SEGA) can afford. And you know their pride won't let them quit.
I thought they were all really terrible to the point I wanted to hit Mr. Brady with a GamePad. Are adult gamers meant to behave like a 5 year old? It that the message Nintendo has for the consumers? And to think people complained about the Rufus Hound campaign.
Now I know what will take care of my "futuristic racer" fix.
Man, after what they did on WiiWare with size constraints, I expect this eShop game to put most Wii U retail games at shame.
It's the only SEGA console I never played. I played the living daylights out of Master System, Saturn and Dreamcast (my favourite) back in my childhood. Safe to say, I've enjoyed it's gems in other formats. Sonic, Ristar or Streets of Rage are among the greatest games ever made.
Charmander is the best. Harder means tougher! And it was "common knowledge" back then that Bulbasaur was the best for beginners, the first couple of gyms are a joy ride with him.
The lack of any non-Nintendo consoles on Wii U VC is really disturbing. Where's Mega Drive and Turbografx? I suppose SEGA and Konami wouldn't oppose to make a small profit at virtually no cost. They just have to re-upload the ROMs and adapt the emulators from Wii, how hard is that?
@Guitardude7 Doing business as usual?! Fils-Aimée is nothing more than your ordinary salesman, magnified to hyperbolic levels by the powers of the Internet. He has no word on the company products.
@NImH Dinosaur Planet actually. But I feel your pain. I too was very disappointed with Starfox Adventures. I mean it's a good game, but it's not Starfox.
So this is why we're not seeing GameCube on VC? Well, then gimme F-Zero GX HD (with online multiplayer!) and Metroid Prime Trilogy HD (all three games with GamePad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk support at 1080p).
@MadAdam81 They had profits on Wii since the first day really. I can only assume that almost seven years later, the console technology cost must be peanuts for Nintendo to make. Wii was a evolution of the GameCube architecture, so it probably was peanuts back then.
If it comes to Europe I know of someone who will be rushing to the nearest dept. store to replace the 2GB original 3DS SD card just for this. Man, glad Ninty didn't go proprietary format like Vita. The price of those cards!
As I understand Mercenaries is just that mode from Resident evil 4 expanded into a full game? If so, awesome stuff.
@Sceptic Dude, where are you from? Are you in the EU? There are no special customs taxes between EU countries and Amazon offers Free Super Saver Delivery, which means no shipping fee. The only thing you'll pay is the respective country VAT (not the UK's rate). For instance I'm from Portugal, I'm in the EU free market zone, Amazon charges me 23% of VAT, which is higher than the UK rate I guess, but with free delivery and all, it's still pretty much worth it for most cases.
@DerpSandwich To me Super Mario 64 holds up much better today than Ocarina of Time. I can play and truly enjoy SM64 to this day, can't say the same about the original OoT. Hence, there was a real need for it to be remade on 3DS, and what a fantastic remake that was.
Good list. I would place Super Mario Galaxy higher, though. And F-Zero GX deserved a spot as it is the BEST RACING GAME OF ALL TIME, guess not too many people actually got to play it. And Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive is one of the greatest platformers.
I think it may be available on eShop in a few months at a discounted price like Nintendo Land. But this decision makes sense, they want to push Wii Remote Plus to everyone who buys it at this point. This gives me confidence that Wii Remote will still be given great focus on future 1st party titles.
My interpretation is that Wii Family Edition and Wii Mini will still be manufactured... somewhere on China, for EU and US. Japan stopped the Wii production because it was selling way below the rest of the world and because it's the only market where the Family and Mini models were not released (were you aware of that?). Nintendo had a production line set up to make 1st model Wii consoles with GC support just for Japan, since for other markets the 1st model had already been phased out a long time ago. They concluded it was not worth it, so that line is being shutdown or even reconverted into manufacturing one of the later models for western markets.
Of course, Nintendo has not been clear on its plans.
Yeah, Nintendo is well trained on data compression and optimization since the days of the N64. They are truly wizards, the problem is they design hardware for their own needs and 3rd parties can't cope with it.
@Gioku I agree. All this non-sense about only having two eyes and can't pay attention to both screens. Yes, the DS and 3DS concept works great because the screens are close to each other. You know what you could do, people? Hold the bloody GamePad higher! Like 3DS, you have to find your sweet spot for viewing. Who would figure that?
I'm more a Regular Show fan, but talking strictly about games, this is more enticing because of the local co-op multiplayer feature than 8-bit Land. Hopefully I'll get both games in due time.
I like the Wii U GamePad, but from the moment I saw it, I thought it was a step backwards from the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo. It reverts motion controls to a secondary role, it adds all the buttons, triggers and analog of a conventional controller plus touchscreen, NFC, etc... great for gamers like us, but intimidating to the casual crowd, who were allured by the Wii Remote simplicity. Even I, when Reggie started talking about playing COD and whatnot, just wanted to know if I could still play it with Wii Remote + Nunchuk, I don't want to play an FPS with dual analogs anymore.
The GamePad is not a step backwards once you take your time with it, you'll end up loving it regardless of your gaming background, but the first impression anyone gets is deceiving. It would have been so easy to keep the Wii Remote + Nunchuk combo as default.
@PinkSpider I don't care about Need for Speed, that's why I didn't buy it. Am I supposed to buy games I don't like to show support? My wallet doesn't allow me to, sorry. Never said Most Wanted was a bad game, it sounded like a serious effort on Wii U, but, again, I don't like Need for Speed. You know a 3rd party racer I bought? Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. Bad, bad Goroh.
@CaviarMeths Nope, Wii sales in Japan are often below one thousand units per week. The only thing it outsells these days is the Xbox 360.
So it makes sense to discontinue it for the Japanese market, but not for the rest of the world.
Also, I'm not so sure of those PS2 numbers Peach64 mentioned. PS2 was already near 120 million when PS3 came, it sold about 30 millions after it's successor launch, if I'm not mistaken. But I'm kind of lazy to got check the actual numbers, so take that with a pinch of salt. Plus that's beside the point, Wii is no PS2, it doesn't really have the legs to sell another 30 million, let's be honest. It's more like the original Playstation sales-wise. If they keep manufacturing Wii for western markets, it could sell more 5 to 10 millions at best.
@Muzikant Disney Infinity also got a Wii version in August. And it's the best-selling of the whole bunch so far, I believe. Do the math: Disney+ toy figurines x 100 million Wii consoles = success.
Is this confirmed to be effective to all markets, or just Japan? Wii is manufactured in China, they can still conceivably produce PAL and NTSC models. They probably have plenty stockpiled to sell this Christmas and beyond.
End of an era, indeed, I feel Wii could still linger for a year more or so.
