The madness of Nintendo Direct meant that we skipped the Japanese chart update last week, which saw the 3DS remain on top and the Wii U sales dip to 17,737 units, which was still a long way above the lows it had suffered in previous months. We have been in the midst of a relative dip in new software on Nintendo hardware in Japan, too, as the Pokémon X & Y sales train gradually slows down.
To start with the software chart, the top places are dominated by new releases on PS3, PS Vita and PSP, with some 3DS and Wii U veterans doing their best to make a mark; that said Daigasso! Band Brothers P, which looks delightfully quirky, makes its début in sixth place.
1. [PSV] God Eater 2 – 266,326 (New)
2. [PS3] Call of Duty: Ghosts – 190,631 (New)
3. [PS3] Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 – 151,800 (New)
4. [PSP] God Eater 2 – 112,024 (New)
5. [3DS] Pokemon X and Y – 82,705 (2,929,806)
6. [3DS] Daigasso! Band Brothers P – 40,196 (New)
7. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 – 26,358 (2,938,669)
8. [3DS] Medabots Dual Kabut Ver. / Kuwagata Ver. – 21,454 (New)
9. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V – 29,144 (579,822)
10. [PS3] Battlefield 4 – 19,291 (140,990)
11. [PSP] Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 – 16,976 (New)
12. [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 13,590 (181,174)
13. [360] Call of Duty: Ghosts – 12,950 (New)
14. [3DS] Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 – 11,444 (New)
15. [PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 8,943 (107,799)
16. [3DS] Sentouchu Densetsu no Shinobi to Survival Battle – 7,981 (95,304)
17. [Wii U] Wii Party U – 7,352 (60,693)
18. [PSP] Arcana Familia 2 – 6,198 (New)
19. [PSV] Akiba’s Trip 2 – 6,074 (39,550)
20. [3DS] Model Oshare Audition Dream Girl – 5,999 (New)
The hardware chart is perhaps the most interesting that it's been for a good number of weeks, with God Eater 2 pushing Vita sales close to those of the 3DS XL / LL, while the PS Vita TV system launched reasonably well: it's a budget-priced micro-console that allows you to play a large proportion — not all — of Vita games on a television. The Wii U figures dipped due to a lack of major new releases hitting the charts, but remain at a steady level well above the abysmal four figure tallies of recent months.
3DS LL – 47,852 (53,190)
PlayStation Vita – 46,350 (21,764)
PlayStation Vita TV – 42,172 (New)
3DS – 22,250 (28,627)
Wii U – 15,906 (17,737)
PlayStation 3 – 12,019 (11,867)
PSP – 4,353 (4,010)
Wii – 518 (579)
Xbox 360 – 404 (346)
Next week's results will be significant for the Wii U in Nintendo's homeland, as Super Mario 3D World arrives without competition from the Xbox One or PS4 — both arrive in Japan in 2014. We've said much about major releases boosting hardware sales, but this will be a major test of that principle in the region. Will Mario provide the Wii U with a surge to the top of the hardware chart?
We'll find out next week.

For the almost absolute lack of Wii U titles on the games chart it's surprising and encouraging to see the console keep selling respectable numbers for the past three weeks. I'm really hopeful for a huge surge next week with Mario 3d World.
God Eater 2 is the strongest Vita game, and the third most antecipated game in Japan.
So it's a strong moment, but I don't believe in a reaction.
And hopefully, Super Mario 3D World will be the start of the climb that gets the Wii U out of the rut that it's been in for it's first year. If a game that looks THAT awesome can't help the Wii U, I wouldn't know what could. :B
It'll be interesting to see how 3D World performs. especially since it won't have to go up against console launches unlike U.S and Europe. Mario 3D Land opened to 340k in Japan FYI.
@sinanziric @KeeperBvK It is a comment, & funny at that! But at the very least there's nothing there to be annoyed about. He simply requoted what's written in the comment section when there are no comments in it.
And the 3DS dominance continues.
@sinanziric Actually, I chuckled when I saw that. Most jokes are funny at least once. I dare you to try it again.
Good to see that the Wii U hasnt lost too much sales from last week. I'm actually pretty glad that the vita is selling better the more competition for the 3ds the better. Also MH4 and Pokemon X and Y are having a hell of a sales race.
I am happy the wii u is breaking 5 digits, and that wii u party is selling relatively well in japan. There is definately room for improvement and lets hope sm3dw can do that.
Wow, people apparently like to see GOD eat!!
I guess I don't keep up with this stuff anymore. What's the Vita TV?
@Nareva
It's basically a way to play Vita games on your TV. Rather redundant, considering they could just release it on a PS3.
I am mostly interested in seeing how the Wii U will perform next week, but it is nice to see the Wii U in 5 digits. I'm also surprised to see that the Playstation Vita is doing well too. It has been a long time coming.
@Nareva vita tv is a micro console you can hook it up to your tv and play your vita games on your tv plus bring up your psn account . It's good to see vita give the 3DS a little challenge I like my vita no where near as much as I like and play my 3DS though my biggest complaint about the vita is it's not at all comfortable to hold so I'm one of the ones excited about vita tv .
@XXIV @Bliquid @Will-75 Cool, thanks.
If sm3dw dosnt give a major boost to wiiu sales then I dont think anything will
I'm glad the Wii U and PS Vita is still doing well for this week! I'm curious to see how the Wii U will do next week with the release of SM3DW this week.
I understand that at $100 the Vita tv is cheaper than a Vita or PS3 but I stil find it odd it sold so well in Japan where gamers seem to prefer handhrlds over consoles. Guess we'll see if sales continue or its a new shiny toy blip.
I'm not surprised at the dip in sales. There's been a surprising lack of new releases, particularly first party. We don't even get the new Zelda title until right after Christmas.
I'm happy that people will still support Nintendo here with whatever comes out, since Daigassou is the only first party game to be released for a while. I'm not sure what new releases are coming up, but hopefully we get a nice big wave of them coming in soon.
The only reason 3DS sales are lower is because most people in Japan already have one or several. /troll face
The Wii U is still selling well so its a step in the right direction.
@WingedSnagret 3DS sales are at around 14 million units in Japan. The population of the country is at just under 120 million. That's a little over 10% of the population. I wouldn't generalize and say that's MOST people in Japan. That's still a lot of units sold for a console, and its already outsold the Wii's lifetime sales. troll face
no 2DS sales?
Really? You can't think of why else this console is failing? You must work for Nintendo.
@Angelic_Lapras_King No, haha, no 2DS sales, as it is not being sold in Japan.
Oh, I didn't even know God Eater 2 was released already. Hopefully it'll come here soon so I don't have to import it.
Let's hope the Wii U will get that huge sales boost everyone's been hoping for next week. Though they need to make some major changes to the account system (which may not be THE biggest issue with the console, but it is MY biggest issue with it). I'm aware of some lost sales because of it.
@Bliquid Is the Vita TV compatible with the Vita gamecards or you have to download the digital versions from Sony shop? Since it's to be played with a PS3 controller, what happens with Vita games that use the touchscreen/backpanel? Can you use the PS4 controller that has a touchpad? Will I be able to play Tearaway with Vita TV?
What about Gaikai, can you play PS3 or PS4 games with just this device, streaming like "OnLive" or you need to have a PS3/PS4 at your household?
So many questions, I wasn't that into Vita TV but if the answers to all these are yes, then it a very compelling proposition.
Go Wii U!!! Nintendo doesn't have to worry about Xbone in Japan tough... that console doesn't even going to sell properly here in America. Lot's of mixed reviews for that console, and Kinect doesn't hear your voice commands like the 80% of the time. Awful.
@Tsuchinoko Ah, then that just means it still has plenty of room to dominate. /double troll face
Wow! Vita won on game sales for the first time in months, but 3DS still dominates!
Poor Microsoft, nobody buys the 360. XD
No it won't imho.
That's not exactly my case, but I think people is not so much anticipating a new Mario game since they have released too many in the last 2-3 years (3D Land, NSMB2, NSMBU, Luigi DLC, 3D World).
Well honestly I'm not anticipating 3D World like I did with Galaxy, for this very reason.
Well I could be happy for vita finally get God eater 2 as saviour in Japan. Really hope tearaway could somewhat save vita in us/europe
On the other hand, next week is wii u turn. Soar a high sky because one of the masterpiece will come, this will be the final saviour for wii u this year
Close number indeed!
3DS seems unstoppable and with Dragon Quest Monster 2 remake coming in February 2014 in Japan for 3DS, it seems it'll stay that way.
Good for Vita, and of course 3DS.
I predict that Wii U and the 3DS(s) will have a clash of the titans next week.
Wii U: A LOT OF UNITS, which is 87 per cent chance it'll stay that way, cuz of 3DW.
3DS: Will obviously shift more units. It has ALBW coming out. I think people will also see this as a oppurtunity to buy MH4 and X/Y, so we may see a rise in their sales.
GO WII U GO!!!
