Re: Video: Every Single Switch Game Released in Year One

SLIGEACH_EIRE

If someone could, I'd be interested to know the total number of games there are minus the Indies. The Indie scene is growing rapidly. It didn't exist on Gamecube, there was a tiny bit on Wii, it grew a fair bit on Wii U and now on Switch they've exploded bigger than they have ever been before.

Edit: I did a rough calculation and I counted 60 games that are not Indies out of 404. And that included counting games like Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 individually. And others as well like Snipperclips and Snipperclips Plus, even though it's an Indie game, it's published by Nintendo.

But nobody's mentioned this fact. 85% of the games on Switch are Indie titles. So when Alex says the Switch has more games in its first year than the lifetime of the N64, that's fine, but there's a big fat Indie elephant in the room.

Let's go even further. Of those 60 1st and 3rd party games, the majority are ports and most have added nothing new.

Then there's that article from yesterday.

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/03/awesome_meet_the_ultimate_nintendo_switch_game_collector

Some Indie games were published physically, some 3rd party games weren't. So again, out of the 404 games, only about 1/4 were published physically. And a lot of them were done so in very limited quantities with overly expensive price tags. Yes, there are some top quality Indie games but there's far more muck than gems.

Nobody talks about this either.

Edit: Another factor to consider when comparing the N64 era to now is that if you wanted to sell a game, it had to be produced physically. That's not the case today. You had to buy a certain allocation of cartridges. Now you can just bung a game on the eShop if you want. There's no overheads, production costs of boxes, manuals, cartridges, shipping, etc. Which leads on to patching. A game had to be properly finished back then. And you'd live or die by what was on the cartridge. Now developers can put out an unfinished game to meet a deadline and come along later and patch it up. Cartridges were crazy expensive back then and it seems those days have returned.

Hello there lovely Sweople! Well done Alex for getting through that. Some absolute classics there, some absolute stinkers too. What's the game(???) between Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers and Cat Quest? I'll take a look on Wiki. It was Castle of Heart. I wonder if any game slipped through the cracks and isn't listed on Wikipedia.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year One: A Review

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@OorWullie Those games you list irritate me in some ways. You're paying full price for an old game and for an inferior experience than elsewhere. Also, publishers are nowadays putting out a game before it's properly finished and then patching it later, e.g. DOOM. They put it out in time for Christmas, sure it's good that they've fixed some issues now but they should've waited until it was ready.

Speaking of irritation, I paid €330(and all the extras) for a machine that's not much more powerful than the Wii U to play games that are inferior and more expensive than elsewhere, just so the machine can be portable(because that's what it basically is, the Wii U made portable). I've no interest in portables anymore, I stopped after the DS Lite. But it's a double-edged sword, if the Switch wasn't portable it would like be a failure. That's what's selling it, that and the examples of quality software(Super Mario Odyssey).

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year One: A Review

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@Kienda I appreciate that they can't just appeal to me and they've try and find a happy medium but if you look at that list above of the games that I wrote out, as a Wii U owner, there's only 3 months of the year that had a game I wanted. I'm not buying games like Bayonetta 1&2 again and I'm certainly not paying €60 when they've added nothing. Nintendo are using those games to fill the schedule. What are Wii U owners supposed to buy for those months? And it's continuing on, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, another €60(less than €20 btw on Wii U), adds nothing, I already own it. Another month chalked off. It's not just that though. When is the next major Switch game release from Nintendo?

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year One: A Review

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@YummyHappyPills It's a good game but it's not made by Nintendo. I know, neither was Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle but it's Mario and I explained it above. I could list Bayonetta 1&2 and Pokken Tournament DX as well(made by 3rd parties) but they're Wii U ports.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year One: A Review

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@impurekind Ya, the Off-TV feature that you could play around the house Nintendo promoted early on was a complete lie, they quickly dropped talk about it. I couldn't leave the room without the message "The connection with the Wii U console has been lost" appearing. If it did have a decent range it could have helped somewhat. It was still doomed though from the start. There's nothing on the Switch that couldn't be played on the Wii U with some tweaks.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year One: A Review

SLIGEACH_EIRE

I was expecting this. If we go through the months of the year and have a look at the big Nintendo games.

March - Breath of the Wild (Wii U port)
April - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Wii U port)
May - Nothing
June - ARMS
July - Splatoon 2
August - Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
September - Pokken Tournament DX (Wii U port)
October - Super Mario Odyssey & Fire Emblem Warriors
November - Nothing
December - Xenoblade Chronicles 2
January - Nothing
February - Bayonetta 1 & 2 (Wii U port)

3 months had nothing, 4 months had Wii U ports. The Switch didn't get its own original game until June, 3 months after launch in ARMS. It did alright but it's nothing spectacular. Splatoon 2 has sold like wildfire, particularly in Japan. But to me it feels a bit like Splatoon ver.1.5. I played the original to death on Wii U. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a 3rd party game but it gets a pass as it was kind of a collaboration. Super Mario Odyssey is awesome, the Switch's first original AAA game, almost 8 months after launch. Fire Emblem, another niche title. Actually the last 3 games on that list are niche; Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2(although it has sold >1 million copies) and Bayonetta 1 & 2(Wii U port). The 3 real must have new games for Switch are Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it's no coincidence that those are the games I bought with my Switch. Yet despite the ports and patchiness the Switch has thrived. I underestimated its appeal as a handheld.

In its 2nd year I want Nintendo to fix a whole host of problems, from its online, to the voicechat, apps, a browser, folders, a better eShop, backing up save files, more new games and less ports, more 3rd party support, reduce the cost of cartridges, use 32GB cartridges - they exist for a reason, Virtual Console, etc.

I'd also like to see a redesigned Switch, that won't come until possibly around March-June next year. There's a whole lot I'd improve there; way more than 32GB of internal memory storage, a better stand, a better dock, maybe a 1080p screen, fix the Joy-Con's, as in make them bigger, I hate them, improve the Pro Controller, fix the D pad, maybe add analogue triggers, reduce the bezel, bump up the specs. Actually, for me, a fixed console version of the Switch, no screen with improved specs would be ideal. I've no interest in its portability.

I also don't get people saying Happy Birthday Switch. It's not a person, it's an inanimate object.

Above is a list of the top selling games in the UK during 2017. Not a single Nintendo game in the Top 10. And the watered down FIFA 18 is the only 3rd party game of the 10 that's on Switch.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend?

SLIGEACH_EIRE

I'm playing Zelda 2. Never completed it back when it originally released, as I was too young. Didn't own an NES, I rented one from the local video store. Played this but didn't get very far at all. Nowadays, I'm not a fan of NES games anymore and playing this reminds me why. Still, it's got to be done. It's one of those games I should experience, it's not all bad, I'm enjoying it but without the saves states, I wouldn't be.

Re: Awesome: Meet The Ultimate Nintendo Switch Game Collector

SLIGEACH_EIRE

If you average those 92 physical games out over a year, it works out at 1.7 per week. And then when you consider that some of these games didn't release worldwide, then it's much less. Resident Evil Revelations 1&2 didn't get any cartridge in Europe, Bayonetta is a digital code here, Tiny Barbarian wasn't released in Europe either, there's other examples. Then there are some that did make it to Europe but they're like gold dust or are crazy expensive, e.g. Monster Motocross(£50 or more for an average game).

Re: Neonwall Is Set To Light Up The Nintendo Switch Later This Month

SLIGEACH_EIRE

I see what they're going for. I've seen similar concepts before, it could be good, not mad about the music. I'll look for a price.

Edit: I see on Nintendo's website it says $9.99*.

(*) If eligible for a Just for You offer, the final price reflects the combined Sale and Just for You offers. The Just for You offer is discounted from the sale price.

https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/neonwall-switch

I don't know why it says it's condional. On the game creators official website, it's €9.99.

http://www.neonwallgame.com/

Edit: I've just noticed the game's price in the sidebar of the page. By the way, the game is 512MB in size.

Re: Kirby Star Allies Has a Demo Live on the eShop Now

SLIGEACH_EIRE

We already knew this from the NOE eShop Press Release yesterday.

"Kirby Star Allies is the biggest release of this month on the Switch, and with just two weeks left until the game launches, excitement has never been higher."

Is it the biggest release of the month though? Does it automatically get that title because it's a Nintendo game?(Edit: I since searched and Kirby wins by default really, March is a very quite month) And I definitely wouldn't say the excitement has never been higher. I see mixed responses to the game, particularly the focus on the Allies and a lot of indifference from the general public to its forthcoming release. I was saying yesterday that this game needs a demo and Nintendo know it, it needs all the help it can get. This game isn't going to light up the charts and doesn't have anywhere near the hype or appeal of a Mario, Zelda or Mario Kart. I also don't get why this game runs at just 30fps. Far more taxing games on the Switch run at 60fps.

Just so you know, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush on the Wii U ran at 60fps. Though I remember Nintendo saying that because of Kirby’s claymation visuals, they were contemplating deliberately lowering the frame rate to give the overall animation a slightly choppier, Aardman Animation-style style. There's no excuse here.

Re: Nintendo Download: 1st March (Europe)

SLIGEACH_EIRE

It's a good idea for there to be a demo of Kirby: Star Allies. This game needs all the help it can get. I must check when the next big new 1st first party Switch release is. I don't think there is one, we've probably got to wait until June and E3 at least to find out, Kirby and the likes won't light up the charts.

If you want a laugh, check out footage of RTO 2. But don't buy it, it's rubbish.

Re: Nintendo Has No Plans For A Switch 2.0, Sources Claim

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@YummyHappyPills I've no need to click the links. I'd already read the story. My point about sources is about this line:

"One person familiar with development plans said waiting longer to introduce variations in the hardware would serve that purpose."

Who? One person? Right! Great source. Why should we believe that?
