I wish it would look more, like, cartoon-y? That's what I liked about Lost World. When I was playing Generations I thought the environments look really pretty. The thing is though that you're playing as a blue hedgehog, who is running at high speed, yet they seem to want to make his games all "mature". Lost World at least puts a cartoon hedgehog into a cartoon environment.
@jmbarnes101 Very good. I don't get how people can let little children play violent games. To me it's quite shocking that this seems almost like the norm. I'd like to know what psychology says about that.
I think what the article is talking about are things like mandatory game installs. Or basically everything that keeps you from inserting the disc and playing it right away. The ease of usage is almost completely gone. It's annoying for an adult, but I think a child appreciates waiting for installs even less.
@DarkKirby Of course you want non gamers and casuals, if you want the sales. The huge PS2 sales were likely also based on casuals and a gimmick, DVD. I don't understand what's so bad about that. And games for gamers? Please. Those are the antagonisms I talked about.
And if I hear the word hardcore I think about speed runners etc. Those to me are hardcore. I guess that's not the actual meaning, but this is how I feel about the word.
@skywake #19 That's fairly typical. You should get used to it.
@Neon_Blues @GrailUK I agree. I don't know what's so funny about elderly people playing games. The success of the Wii is usually downplayed, because it was bought by soccer moms and old people. And? I think there're quite a few people who weren't allowed to play games when they were younger and only really started gaming when they themselves could affort it. I guess those people would have liked something like the Wii back in the day, that challenges the stigma of gaming, something they could enjoy with their parents and grandparents. Another point is, we're all growing older not younger. Do you want to be part of a meme or joke, because you're an elderly person playing games?
I feel the gaming community is exclusive, not inclusive. That's why you have such nice expressions like filthy casual. I guess people just need antagonisms, and hardcore vs casual is one of them.
By the way, today someone online posted a really interesting quote by Miyamoto from an interview with Business Week Online. From 2005!
"It's convenient to make games that are played on TV," he said. "But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that."
The GamePad actually made me all excited for the console. The only downside of it is its battery life. But I just charge it while playing. It even charges fully while playing, so that's nice.
The thing with the GamePad is that when it's used people complain and when it isn't used people complain. I hope I can use the Pro Controller, they say. If they don't use the GamePad, they could release a Wii U without it, they say. When it comes to the Wii people complain that motion was used where a simple button press would have been enough. But now they complain that the GamePad isn't/wasn't used enough.
I hope the next console will have a second screen, too. Getting rid of motion or the second screen would actually be a step back, in my opinion.
@PlywoodStick As I said, I think they wanted to reach a wider audience and not have weird headlines and articles regarding that topic. Therefore I guess they made the right choice.
And joke's on you, because I don't play violent games. So I wouldn't be bothered if violence would get toned down.
I also wanted to point out that the question isn't "censorship" or no "censorship", but "censorship" or no localisation at all. Some people are just happy to get games at all, because back in the day the game might have been labeled too Japanese to release outside of Japan.
Funny how people like to say how Nintendo is stuck in the past, but then want them to use a controller that's basically from the 80s/90s.
But that's the gaming community for you.
I'd actually like for every console to have a gimmick. How much more exciting it would be! Back in the day devs had no problem putting games on different consoles while playing to their strengths or weaknesses. Like Street Fighter for a Sega console, though it lacked buttons. But I guess the run for power has made different versions of the same game practically nonviable. And yet people only want more and more power.
But that's the gaming community for you.
The people who want the original, only translated, are the best. The very fact that it has to be translated makes it different from the original. Want the original? Buy and play the original. There is no other way around it.
Though I like to have things as close to the original as possible, I appreciate the localisation changes. I'm, let's say, "into" Japan, but even then I'm kind of iffy on the whole idol and gravure topic.
The thing is, some things have to be changed. Especially when they are grounded in completely different cultures. If you want to capture a wider audience you have to appeal to a wider audience, which means changing some things here and there. There are specific character archetypes, like the overly cute characters, that could be off putting for "Western" people.
Being part of the EU has nothing to do with losing independence. It's not like the EU forces laws on the member states, ministers etc. from all over the EU negotiate and vote. @DiscoGentleman I figured as much. Although, wasn't there a girl on here writing articles about imports and stuff? I guess she knows at least some Japanese. But that was some time ago. She might not even write for this site anymore.
Seeing that this is a site about Nintendo it's actually quite sad to not have someone who knows Japanese readily available. They should really have people whom they could ask in such situations.
I really don't get why voice acting is such a mandatory feature nowadays. And it's also okay for people to not like it. Everyone has their own preferences. And Nintendo has many games with voice overs. They're not new to it, the same they're not new to online gaming.
Mario mostly has native English speakers providing the voices, while Zelda has Japanese dubbers. I liked that, because it makes a nice balance between two of their most known titles.
@RedError @DiscoGentleman Thanks you two. I also listened to that part and can confirm that he only answered the question about DLC, everything after was the translator himself saying his opinion. I guess he saw all the salty comments and wanted to ease the situation a little, but actually did more harm than good.
But the damage has been done. The way people in general behave, even if you debunk it a hundred times, some will want to go with that he said it.
Something like this shouldn't have happened. You can't just take something and run with it. Does no one on the NL team know Japanese?
I don't really like the English voice that is heard in the trailer. Zelda or whoever it is. It contrasts too much with the Japanese voice. I might get used to it, but if there's only some voice acting here and there, perhaps they could add dual audio?
I don't generally like everything voice acted. Though that depends on the game. A game like Bayonetta is completely fine fully voice acted. But FFX was highly annoying with how everybody and everything was talking to you. FFXII and Xenoblade make it a lot better with voice acting in cutscenes but text boxes when you talk to NPCs.
@JosieC84
I thought the same. Really sad that it's come to this.
Even if a game nails all the technical aspects and is perfect in that way, if it's not a good game then all those numbers don't mean anything.
I remember when the dip to 59fps in MK8 every few seconds rendered the game basically unplayable to some people.
@ThanosReXXX #131
Yes, I figured out that much. You are one of the, sadly, few people on here who seem reasonable, that's why I liked to read your comments even back when I used to come here regularly. That was back when you had another username, I think?
@WiltonRoots
Don't forget about "stuck in the past", which can also be "stuck in the 80s" or "stuck in the 90s".
It's best to wait for the Comment Section Drinking Game™ until the NX reveal.......... Though that would result into FE-like permadeath.
@JaxonH The sales are probably less important than the profit. Some games sell millions, but don't make a profit.
And I feel third parties should want to grow the audience. Having late ports with less features is not a good start. Even if you buy the game to show that the audience is indeed there, what if the next game gets the same treatment of late and gimped? Not everyone wants to keep investing until they're deemed worthy of equal treatment.
The third party topic is difficult, in my opinion, because we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.
@ThanosReXXX
I'm not. But at the same time I'm not running around like "Oh, how incompetent, freaking lying to us and treating us like children, look how adult I am complaining on a forum, knowing exactly how to run a company, because only bad luck and the illuminati keep me from having my own very hardcore gaming company that isn't stuck in the past".
Actually though, I'm just being sarcastic. Or cynical, perhaps? That is probably all there's left to do in this "gaming community". And, oh, being friends with Jack.
I see we have lots of developers on these forums who know exactly what goes into developing a game. And of course they also have all the insider info to know what those physics problems were. -rolls eyes-
@Tindre I'm glad that they made the Wii U and the 3DS the focus of E3 instead of showing a new console that would have overshadowed everything else. Who'd be interested in all the other games if games for the NX were shown? Now we have another big event, the NX reveal, to look forward to, instead of having everything crammed into one E3. A reveal that will be closer to the actual release. If you want something "stupid", how about announcing a slim model and then announcing a more powerful model of the same console that is like a year away?
@Tindre
Just because it doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.
They're a business. They don't just do something, because they feel like it. There is a reason behind everything. Just because the consumer doesn't know everything that goes into the decision-making or doesn't want to understand, doesn't make the decision "stupid".
@3MonthBeef Yes, that's it. I was looking forward to Versus XIII, but not so much for XV. I admit, I haven't followed the game that intensely, but it ultimately made me realize that Squenix likely won't develop something like FFIX anymore. At least not as a mainline title. FFIX had all those quirky characters, like a boy with a monkey tail, a rat-woman and, um, Quina. Now Bravely Default seems to take that place. World of Final Fantasy actually looks much more appealing to me. Vivi is so cute. <3
Many times when Japanese developers try too hard to appeal to "Western tastes" the resulting game seems to be stripped from what made the series great in the first place.
I really feel like the push for HD, with its power talk and pseudo-hardcoreness, did more harm than good.
One more thing. Link is basically using the GamePad in the game itself! ToT If they're giving Link a GamePad, but we won't be able to do anything with it ourselves, that'd be such a tease. T_T The game will be enjoyable nonetheless, but hopefully there will be some nice GamePad integration.
I really really hope we're being NDA talked. Having no more second screen would be a huge step back.
From the beginning? Didn't development start like 2011 or 2012? That's just weird. Could it be a mistranslation?
I kind of hope that all the talk about the GamePad is basically "We're under NDA". Apparently there were rumours - or are they even facts? - that the GamePad was developed with the new Zelda game in mind. Or that it was going to be used in unique ways in the dungeons. I have to say, some things that are being said after the reveal kind of damped my excitement. WW HD showed how the GamePad steamlines the overall experience and to have none of that in the new title is a bummer. Like I said, I hope it's NDA talk.
If the GamePad was the barrier for third parties to develop for the Wii U, but the same third parties jump on the VR train without any problem, then they're full of it.
I watched a video basically calling them. Mini-Discs don't give you enough space? Why not put the games on more than one disc? It seems even the 360 got that treatment with some games and that was just last gen. It's difficult to port to? Didn't stop the PS3 from getting ports.
I feel that even if the NX would be the perfect console many third parties wouldn't bother anyway. It seems in order to be loved by third parties you have to have a steady flow of cash. If it's not an install base, who will buy the games then it's paying for exclusive content. The XBox has lost some of the love since Microsoft stopped paying third parties for exclusive content.
I love those "Sony is giving their fans what they want" comments. You mean the company which doesn't even support their own handheld, but invests into VR? The company who makes expensive memory cards? The company who tells you to take a second job to buy a console? Or to buy another console to have more storage?
The company without any legacy? The company who has abandoned their PS1 and PS2 self to chase the lowest common denominator, the "dudebros", alongside Microsoft?
It's fine if you prefer their content. Everybody likes what they like. But don't pretend as if you're treated somehow better by them.
But as I said in another thread, as long as you are the "cool guy", with power, sales and third party support, no one really seems to notice your problems.
The PS3 was a huge letdown for me. To me it's Wii > PS3. That's why I own a Wii U and not a PS4. I might get a PS4 once there will be some JRPGs on it. The industry isn't the same anymore. Over the years I lost interest in many franchises. I'm not even excited for FFXV and I'm a person who liked FFXIII. I didn't get any of the sequels, though. shudders There's hardly any reason for me to get a PS4. At least now. And especially with a better version coming.
Despite that I don't feel the need to go on PushSquare etc. and rain on everybody's parade. If I would get on there and write the exact same things would I also be considered a "true fan", because I criticize them? And everybody who enjoys their content would be considered a "fanboy" and "part of the problem"?
Sorry for being kind of off-topic, but I needed to get that out.
I understand what you mean. The negativity, shortsightedness, hypocrisy and, sorry to say, downright stupidity is too much. I hardly go to news sites anymore. I have a few youtubers I watch content from. People who actually try and discus the motivations behind decisions, people who enjoys motion controls and the GamePad, people who just really seem to love gaming. I may not agree with everything they say, but they're enjoyable to listen to. And they don't have the me-too-mentality.
And were there weird comments about the female Treehouse members again? I hope those aren't the same people angry about no female Link. Well, some people do behave as if they had never seen a woman in their life.
@MarioPhD I think I'm quite open to "gimmicks". The GamePad really made me excited. I actually hope they'll keep motion and a second screen. It makes for a much more steamlined experience. Just look at Super Mario Maker. I hope no one would prefer to make courses with a "standard controller". O_o; The thing with VR is that it's not for everyone. The price is too high and it can cause health issues. And gimmicks that aren't packed in usually don't fare too well.
@BeardedSquash Easy. Because they want to have a healthy business. It seems that the XBox devision never made any profit, but Microsoft can take it, because they have other things to rely on. Nintendo doesn't quite have anything else. I think they said that they decided against HD, because at the time there weren't as many HD TVs in homes and no one knew if they would take off. What if they hadn't? Looking at the gaming industry now I feel that the push for HD was much too early.
@MarioPhD The gaming community is just full of hypocrisy. That's really all there is to it. The same people who complain about a gimmick will then be all about that or another gimmick, depending on the situation. Like which company is involved.
I don't think VR would be for me. I'd try it, but I'd probably have to take it off after 1 second. lol
@Freeon-Leon I don't get that, too. I'd also like 3D Mario to be a 3D platformer, not an adventure game. But that's just me.
If, I say if Zelda Breath of the Wild will be a launch title, why would they release a 3D Mario at the same time? How many people would buy both anyway?
Are the go-for-it-people or they-are-stupid-people also the no-gimmicks-people? rolls eyes
@c1pher_c0mplet Which is the casual system this gen? The PS4. If you want sales you can't only rely on "hardcore gamers". And the NX is very much the child of Iwata.
These condescending comments towards casuals are quite disgusting.
To me that reasoning is sound. Link bears the Triforce of Courage, because/that's why he's the one who goes on a quest. Zelda bears the Triforce of Wisdom, so gameplay for her would have been different. It would lend itself for a spin off, like a puzzle game or I read someone saying something like a strategy game where she has to defend Hyrule, something like that would be cool.
Aren't we going a little too much into the direction where everything is costumisable to the point where there're really only few distinct characters anymore? They say Link doesn't have a personality, but to me he does. I'd like it to be fleshed out, not diluted until he becomes an actual avatar.
@gcunit @PtM Yeah, that's the thing. Unless you're famous, no one'd care. I didn't know the girl, but when I heard that she died and how she died I was shocked and had tears in my eyes. Such a young girl, who had her whole life ahead of her. But the question is, where do you draw the line with such things? Who gets to decide who gets and who doesn't get a tribute. It seems far too early, too. Let it rest a little.
Bill Trinen changed his profile pic on twitter to exactly the same one shown above. He has it even know, just looked. I guess that's quite an acknowledgement. He even retweeted some old tweets.
If you criticize Nintendo for their handling of the Wii U and NX, but happily own or buy one of the other two systems, I'd say you're quite full of it. But it seems if you have the sales, the third parties and are considered the "cool guy" no one sees your problems.
I will likely write things that were mentioned by others, but I don't feel like going through 200 plus comments and quote.
I once read an interesting comment that Link stopped being an avatar after the very first Zelda. And I would agree. Ever since he started having deeper relations to the people around him he stopped being an avatar and became a character.
Having a female Link for the sake of having a female Link is not progress, to me it is more like regress. I would prefer to have a seperate timeline of female Link. Or give it a reason or purpose.
I even made up my own plot. Ganondorf is usually adult, while Link and Zelda are children. So a young Ganondorf could use magic or something to destroy the other two Triforces before they reincarnate. But instead of destroying them they get switched, Link being born as a girl with the Triforce of Wisdom, while Princess Zelda being born as a boy with the Triforce of Courage. Because of a prophecy that a princess will save the country they name the boy Zelda and let him wear girls clothes in front of others as not to worry the people of Hyrule.
Something like this would be interesting. Or give one of the existing girls a more prominent role. Like Zelda, of course, or Impa. Or make a whole new IP with a female lead? Let the girl stand on her own feet instead of being something like an afterthought.
And one more thing. When I once argued that I don't want Link to be female, I got a comment thrown at me a la "You don't know the hardships of women in the world". First, Link being female won't change the position or treatment of girls and women. There might be some individuals to whom it would make an impact, but I would say in the greater scheme it won't mean anything. Second, I'm a woman myself. So basically, because I'm not all in for a female Link I was thought to be a sexist, cauvinist male, who doesn't understand the hardships of women. Thank you. You want progress, right? How about not lumping everyone into one close minded category?
On another note, if you're only able to relate to someone if they're like you, to say it short, in looks, that's sad. Really sad.
@Einherjar #215
This. So. Freaking. Much.
Not to mention companions like Navi, I guess is female, Midna or Fi, who is likely genderless but looks very feminine.
There is a nice dynamic between male Link and all those female characters.
I have heard in a podcast that while the Twilight Princess reveal is looked at fondly, that E3 wasn't all that great overall. I don't know if this is true, though, because I haven't seen it myself.
@JaxonH Wow. That's great! I have to say that I will never understand the meltdown that happened after the Direct presentation in 2013. I thought what was shown was great.

I remember when the dip to 59fps in MK8 every few seconds rendered the game basically unplayable to some people.

That's not really true, though. If you've finished Bayonetta 2 you should know what I mean.

Yes, I figured out that much. You are one of the, sadly, few people on here who seem reasonable, that's why I liked to read your comments even back when I used to come here regularly. That was back when you had another username, I think?
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
@WiltonRoots
Don't forget about "stuck in the past", which can also be "stuck in the 80s" or "stuck in the 90s".
It's best to wait for the Comment Section Drinking Game™ until the NX reveal.......... Though that would result into FE-like permadeath.
@BLPs @ThanosReXXX
I'm actually more into wine.
Re: Nintendo Outlines Key Goals to Ensure NX Success
@JaxonH
The sales are probably less important than the profit.
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
@BLPs #122
lol I don't know if serious, but now I want to see. Sounds like fun.
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
@ThanosReXXX
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
@Yorumi
And?
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
I see we have lots of developers on these forums who know exactly what goes into developing a game. And of course they also have all the insider info to know what those physics problems were. -rolls eyes-
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
@Tindre
I'm glad that they made the Wii U and the 3DS the focus of E3 instead of showing a new console that would have overshadowed everything else.
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
@Tindre
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
@3MonthBeef
Yes, that's it.
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
One more thing. Link is basically using the GamePad in the game itself! ToT If they're giving Link a GamePad, but we won't be able to do anything with it ourselves, that'd be such a tease. T_T
The game will be enjoyable nonetheless, but hopefully there will be some nice GamePad integration.
I really really hope we're being NDA talked.
Having no more second screen would be a huge step back.
Re: Delays With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Due to Physics Engine and Dual Release Decision
Re: Nintendo Outlines Key Goals to Ensure NX Success
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
@BLPs #75
Very good comment.
Re: E3 2016: Reggie Says VR "Needs to be Mainstream" For Nintendo To Get Involved
@MarioPhD
I think I'm quite open to "gimmicks". The GamePad really made me excited. I actually hope they'll keep motion and a second screen. It makes for a much more steamlined experience. Just look at Super Mario Maker. I hope no one would prefer to make courses with a "standard controller". O_o;
The thing with VR is that it's not for everyone. The price is too high and it can cause health issues. And gimmicks that aren't packed in usually don't fare too well.
@BeardedSquash
Easy.
Re: E3 2016: Reggie Says VR "Needs to be Mainstream" For Nintendo To Get Involved
@MarioPhD
The gaming community is just full of hypocrisy. That's really all there is to it.
The same people who complain about a gimmick will then be all about that or another gimmick, depending on the situation. Like which company is involved.
I don't think VR would be for me. I'd try it, but I'd probably have to take it off after 1 second. lol
Re: E3 2016: New Kind Of Mario Game Is Coming, Says Shigeru Miyamoto
@Grumblevolcano
What the hell!? O_o;
@Freeon-Leon
I don't get that, too. I'd also like 3D Mario to be a 3D platformer, not an adventure game. But that's just me.
If, I say if Zelda Breath of the Wild will be a launch title, why would they release a 3D Mario at the same time? How many people would buy both anyway?
Re: E3 2016: Reggie Says VR "Needs to be Mainstream" For Nintendo To Get Involved
Are the go-for-it-people or they-are-stupid-people also the no-gimmicks-people? rolls eyes
@c1pher_c0mplet
Which is the casual system this gen? The PS4.
If you want sales you can't only rely on "hardcore gamers".
And the NX is very much the child of Iwata.
These condescending comments towards casuals are quite disgusting.
Re: E3 2016: Eiji Aonuma Rules Out The Option to Play as a Female Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Re: E3 2016: Full Title Of Wii U And NX Legend Of Zelda Revealed
It looks beautiful. Love all the animals around. But I'd rather be friends with them than hunt them. ^^;
And I don't quite like the English voice of that girl (Zelda?). T_T
Re: Fans Petition Nintendo To Name Zelda NPC After Deceased Singer Christina Grimmie
@gcunit @PtM
Yeah, that's the thing.
Re: Fans Petition Nintendo To Name Zelda NPC After Deceased Singer Christina Grimmie
Bill Trinen changed his profile pic on twitter to exactly the same one shown above. He has it even know, just looked.
I guess that's quite an acknowledgement. He even retweeted some old tweets.
Re: Talking Point: Revealing an Innovative Legend of Zelda at E3 Could Provide a Timely Boost for Nintendo
If you criticize Nintendo for their handling of the Wii U and NX, but happily own or buy one of the other two systems, I'd say you're quite full of it.
But it seems if you have the sales, the third parties and are considered the "cool guy" no one sees your problems.
Re: Reminder: Catch the Sony E3 2016 Press Conference With Push Square
@Peeks
They never had a powerful console? You don't even know what you're talking about.
What a disgusting comment.
Re: E3 2016: Nintendo E3 Zelda Badge Appears to Suggest Male and Female Link
Really sad.
@Einherjar #215
This. So. Freaking. Much.
Not to mention companions like Navi, I guess is female, Midna or Fi, who is likely genderless but looks very feminine.
There is a nice dynamic between male Link and all those female characters.
Re: Feature: Our Favourite Nintendo E3 Moments
I have heard in a podcast that while the Twilight Princess reveal is looked at fondly, that E3 wasn't all that great overall. I don't know if this is true, though, because I haven't seen it myself.
@JaxonH
Wow. That's great! I have to say that I will never understand the meltdown that happened after the Direct presentation in 2013. I thought what was shown was great.
