Re: Nintendo President Says "Most" North American Switch Online Users Have Upgraded To The Expansion Pack

Richnj

@Sonos because they'd picked favourable data and then presented it in a favourable way...

America counts for about 40% of the Switch market, by not talking about the remaining 60%, they are leaving a lot of info off the table, and leaving the success of the expansion pack globally in question.

If America counts for 40% of NSO subs too, then that number is around 15m(ish), and then I'd like to know if that's 51% of that, or 80-90%.

And yeah, 51% and 80% is still "most" and still accurate, but they aren't the same. The difference between these two could be 5m or more users, which would actually actually leave an margin of interpretation of 70% more users in that market...

That's the same to you?

Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

Richnj

Well the Wii U should have been called a Wii 2.

The Wii was such a strong brand, it made sense to keep it, but to try to use "U" to differeniate two different generations was dumb as rocks.

This is what they should do;

If it's a hybrid device - call it the Switch 2
If it's a home console with a unique main controller - call it the Wii 2
If it's a traditional home console - call it the Gamecube 2.

The marketing and hype will take care of itself.

Re: Rumour: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Remaster Supposedly Coming To Switch

Richnj

An MCC style collection of the 360 era titles would be a better project.

The COD MP community is so scattered because of the yearly MP releases. Consolidating the legacy ones all under one title would be great.

Even better, they could release it on Xbox, PS and PC too, and even release games to it piecemeal as they did the steam release of MCC.

Re: Nintendo Issues Copyright Strike Against Scanned Super Mario 64 Guide From 1996

Richnj

@Trikeboy and without the fans, IPs mean nothing.

Entire subcultures form around these IPs, and this is what turns an IP from being an idea is someone's head in to a mega franchise worth billions.

The whole thing is a symbiotic relationship. To be so possessive over your IP, taking the fun out of your franchise for fans, shutting down their fan projects and preservation of of that subculture's history is actually bad for that fandom and Nintendo's IP value.

Re: Nintendo Issues Copyright Strike Against Scanned Super Mario 64 Guide From 1996

Richnj

"While I fully understand protecting one’s IP and copyrights I didn’t think I was hurting anyone by scanning and uploading a 27 year old guide that is extremely out of print."

It's not hurting anyone. Nintendo doesn't care that you aren't hurting them. They just seemingly hate the idea that a published work belongs just as much to the fans as it does the creators.

And this is just further evidence that pirating Nintendo content is morally justified. If they are this petty over a nearly 30 year old out of print guide, how do you think they feel about more recent content (including anything that will disappear from the Wii U and 3ds eshop soon)?

They 100% do not have plans to use this content. They certainly do not want you to enjoy content that they don't directly profit from.

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know What Switch "Groups" You've Created Since The Latest Firmware Update

Richnj

@Gwynbleidd They probably want the social media engagement (free advertisement) rather than the data itself, to be honest.

In topic, I created, Nintendo, Xbox, Co-op, Arcade, Retro, and RPG, so far. I'm sure I'll create one's for genres and the like as I need them.

I have downloaded around 800 xbox games, 400 PS games, and 150 Switch games, so categorising (and not just placing in a box like folders do) is absolutely essential for my libraries.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Finally Gave Us Switch Folders, In A Very Nintendo Way

Richnj

The fact that these are groups (a la Steam, Xbox) and not Folders (a la Wii/U, PS) is actually the most un-nintendo aspect of all of this.

Being able to create groups and be able to place any game that meets the criteria of that group (co-op, Retro, Nintendo, etc) rather than just one, is an objectively better system.

We just need them on the home screen now.

Re: US Business Owner Spent $57,789 Of Covid Relief Money On A Pokémon Card

Richnj

@sailornic Bills and wages.

The point was that they kept the business afloat during a time of no income so that they could continue trading afterwards, instead of going bust and there being no jobs or businesses.

Buying a Pokemon card, or highly speculative investments doesn't count. If you have room to spend half your relief money on those, then you didn't need the money.

Re: 1,000 "Digital-Only" Titles Estimated To Disappear When Nintendo Closes 3DS & Wii U eShop

Richnj

@Mark-number-12 It's been 20 years since Eternal Darkness released, and Nintendo are yet to re-release the title.

Goldeneye 007 has been vaulted by Nintendo for 25 years.

Star Fox Adventures. 20 years.
Star Fox Assault. 17 years.
Paper Mario TYD. 18 years.
Mario Kart Double Dash. 19 years.

If you want to wait literal decades for Nintendo to release certain games (if at all) so that you can feel morally superior for sycophantically defending a billion dollar company's ability to hoard art and culture if it isn't immediately financially beneficial to them, then be my guest.

Re: 'Missions And Rewards' Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Richnj

@NintendoEternity

Xbox Live started back in Gamecube days (2002), and was fully featured by the Wii days (2005) 3 years.

PSN was free throughout the Wii days (2006) and only started charging in the Wii U days (2012), long after the service had become fully featured. 6 Years.

NSO on Switch, now in 2022, and over 3 years old, and a paid service, is neither as fully featured as xbox back in 2005, nor is it building its features before charging like Sony did a decade ago.

I paid the first two years of NSO because I did want them to build up, but it's very clear now that Nintendo do not intend to build up the service beyond what they already do, not on Switch anyway. They are just coasting by until they get to the next system.

Re: You Likely Won't Be Able To Catch 'Em All In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet

Richnj

@Jeronan Just because it has always been this way doesn't make it right.

But if that's the way you want to go with this, then it has always been possible to carry forward your pokemon and catch them all in previous versions. You can't say that one historical thing is good because it is the historical reality, and that the other historical thing isn't good because it's not the reality anymore. Pick one.

Again, the issue is that this is a post hoc justification.

If you want to argue that giving people different versions is good because it encourages trading, well again, you should be in favour of different games having different regions or a randomly selected preset that determines availability.

If you are arguing that each region should have its own Pokemon, then why are you in favour of a two version system that locks Pokemon out of certain versions?.

And if you want to argue that it's costly and bad game design to have 900 Pokemon in a game, then OK, but that's not an argument in favour of regions.

And if you want to argue what was historically true, then you should be in favour of cross gen trades. But in this case you aren't.

Just admit you just want whatever it is Nintendo is doing, and uncritically so. Rather than try to provide incompatible arguments in favour of it, to try to dismiss the people who are providing criticisms.

Re: You Likely Won't Be Able To Catch 'Em All In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet

Richnj

@Jeronan It is not to encourage trading. It is purely to make people buy two copies.

If they wanted to give players access to different Pokemon they could have each version be a different region, or include both versions on one game, and either have an RNG start up to determine which version or just allow players to choose.

No other games makes you buy two copies to catch all the monsters.

And again, yes it is silly, because it makes a Pokemon not available in a region that they should technically be available in, if you bought the wrong copy. That completely undermines the idea that each region has its own catachable Pokemon.

And it's even sillier that people will buy the same game in a slightly different variant and say "this makes sense". It would just be easier if buyers just admitted that it's a scummy Nintendo practice and that the whole region defense is just a post hoc justification.

Re: Plug In Digital Withdraws From Project Focused On Cryptocurrencies And NFTs

Richnj

The number of companies that are backtracking just days after these announcements is really sus. They either are not doing the research and then are suprised by the amount of backlash, or are throwing it out there to see the results and responding based on public reception.

@MostHandsieBoy Maybe, but it's hurting their reputations. Wouldn't it be easier to do the Playtonic way and come out against NFTs?. Thereby strengthening your rep and still getting that free ad space.

Re: 'This War Of Mine' Studio Will Donate Profits From The Game To The Ukrainian Red Cross

Richnj

@Tourtus "It's why I prefer volunteer work over throwing money at a charity"

There's issue with this. Not everybody has the time to volunteer (let alone the desire to travel to an active warzone to help), but they may have money, and organisations also need money along side manpower. If everybody volunteered but provided no money, you wouldn't have the resources to action your steps.

If donating is all you can do, then I encourage it.

Re: Random: 'Nintendo Generation' Skeletons Aren't Tough Enough, Says US Army Major

ok, few notes.

1) Gen Z are born between 1997 and 2012. They are the Playstation Generation.

2) Lack of activity is a society issue in general.

3) the US army can go F themselves, because they are only concerned with this because it affects their ability to maintain their industrial military complex. "We are sad that recruits come to us and break before we've had chance to use them up and break them ourselves, before dropping them off on the streets".

Re: Nightdive Studios Wants To Remaster Titles Like Eternal Darkness, But Hasn't Had Any Luck With Nintendo

Richnj

If Nintendo were just shy about working with third parties, but willing to remaster and bring forward old titles, they could easily found a studio to do this. They honestly just don't care about these older titles until they have a financial gap to fill.

Just look at the NES and SNES minis. They were only created because the Wii U was failing and they wanted hardware to sell. I'd very much assume it's the same story with all the Wii U ports too. They are just filling the gap, not preserving a legacy.

Re: Soapbox: A Week After Jailing One Pirate, Nintendo Just Made Piracy A Reality For Countless Fans

Richnj

Imagine for a moment that there was a way that Nintendo could stop people from profiting from selling their games, that they could stop the unnecessary jailing of others, and Nintendo could be the good guys.

If only there was some sort of way of sharing content that was no longer being sold, but like, legally, for free. A way of companies giving out the content, and not forcing pirates to do it.

I mean, after the closure, Nintendo won't be making any more money from these games anyway, so why would not vaulting it, and giving it away really be an issue?

We could call it, I don't know, 'shareware', or something.

Re: Nintendo Expects Sales Of 'Evergreen' Games To Decline, Putting A Focus On New Titles

Richnj

@LUIGITORNADO "Honestly. I don’t really see a negative. Even many of their third party exclusives are retaining value. It’s good for the company, their retail partners, and even third party partners."

Again, I can't help but notice a distinct lack of care for the customer here.

"Or maybe I should be able to purchase a Breath of the Wild at the same price of “LOL surprise movie night?”"

There's a £5 difference on their normal prices on Amazon. If we are using prices to gauge quality, then Zelda is only slightly better.

In other news, Nintendo has announced it is shutting down Wii U and 3DS online stores. If I were to suggest that Nintendo should heaily discount all their games on those stores to allow as many people as possible to buy up as much content as possible before it's all gone, would you support that?

Re: Nintendo Is Ending Support For The 3DS & Wii U eShop

Richnj

Imagine if there was a sale of at least the Nintendo games, of more than 50%, that allowed gamers to buy up all the games they wanted. So that the systems could go out with a bang and Nintendo could bring joy to gamers without the "*at a cost" in the disclaimer.

Edit: Hold on. What about this?

Re: Nintendo Expects Sales Of 'Evergreen' Games To Decline, Putting A Focus On New Titles

Richnj

@LUIGITORNADO "It allows Nintendo to still retain value to their brand by not offering bargain bin prices that we’ve seen for shovel ware, like Carnvial Games, in a giant bin at Wal-Mart."

For this to be true, then previous Nintendo games that did get big discounts would have to have lost value. None of the Gamecube games ended up in the bargain bins.

" I don’t really think anyone deserves cheap and access to a product when it’s not a necessity for life."

Again, it's not about deserving it, it's about wanting people to experience them regardless. Sharing things you enjoy with others is a pretty standard feeling. IDK.

" It’s pretty black and white. Nintendo making money is good for the company and the gamers that enjoy playing their games."

They are one of the biggest gaming companies. Only beaten by the likes of Sony, MS, and tencent. They are most definitely making money. Is there a reason why billions of dollars isn't quite good enough? And even more is needed?

Re: Nintendo Expects Sales Of 'Evergreen' Games To Decline, Putting A Focus On New Titles

Richnj

@LUIGITORNADO If discounts devalue the game, then doesn't the 33% discount also devalue the game?

And if we can dismiss the potential discount market, then why even bother launching games at £60. Why not go up to £70 or even £100. Increase the value of the games, and if there are people who can't justify that price (when they could justify £60) well that would be on them, right?

And I don't care about Nintendo making more money on titles they've already made bucket loads on. I care about more people getting to experience the titles. When gamers care more about the company's profits instead of people playing, we normally call them fanboyism.

Re: Poll: Do You Have An Issue With Xenoblade Chronicles' Accents?

Richnj

"it affected the canon"

Don't get this. The first game had British accents. Before then, it was just Japanese. How does NOA wussing out change the canon, when the western canon is that the mainline titles always had British accents, and not American ones?

Americans getting upset about any English being spoken in anything other than an American accent is just national main character syndrome. Like when Far Cry had the gall to have you shoot Americans instead of foreigners, and they all got triggered.
