Re: Review: Castlevania Anniversary Collection - You'll Want To Get Your Teeth Into This

RenderSpotlight

" Still, even with the questionable inclusion of Simon's Quest and Castlevania: The Adventure,"

Are you kidding?? It is a Castlevania Collection, it HAS to be included. Not including Simon's Quest would have been a bigger mistake than including it.

I never will understand reviewers who complain about including more games in a collection. It is not hard to simply skip playing it, but at least the option is there. If it was not included, it would be impossible to play. My goodness.

Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow

RenderSpotlight

I am not totally convinced it is a "con" to include the "older" games in with a collection just because the "newer" game is also included.

Apply that same logic to Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 on the NES and list those games as a "con" because they were "surpassed" by a newer game just because they were included in a NES Super Mario Collection.

A collection is a collection despite the quality of games otherwise it would not be a "collection". Anyway, it is not as if the first two games are broken and totally unplayable, they are perfectly good games.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Yesterday's Nintendo Direct?

RenderSpotlight

@rjejr After the "Third pillar" (Wii DS GBA), I learned that Nintendo will say or deny just about anything, despite the truth being obvious.
Reggie said some of the craziest things over the years. I remember thinking does he really think we will believe this? Obviously it was some boardroom meeting where they thought "if we just say this enough the masses will believe us".
Then days or weeks later, the obvious came out. SMH

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Yesterday's Nintendo Direct?

RenderSpotlight

@rjejr Yeah, but it is Nintendo and they are using the term "Expansion Pack" in association with a product they are selling with the N64, they might as well keep with their historical naming tradition.

My whole train of thought was the Genesis' history is more tied with the NES/SNES era and should be tied with the current tier. As much as I would like to have access to the Genesis library, at the moment, I already have access to most of the games on the Switch. I might be wrong, but Ecco and MUSHA are the only 2 games not currently playable on the Switch. Although Ecco is on Steam for a minimal cost. So that leaves MUSHA and I cannot justify paying extra for access to that one game. The value is just not there. In my personal opinion.

On a side note, having lived the 32/64 bit era of gaming, I have very little interest. That era was the reason I took a long hiatus from gaming. I always wished they would have done one more generation of the 2D/2.5D. 3D was just not quite ready with the 32/64 bit era hardware. The Dreamcast was fun and capable of good 3D, but the short life span curbed my enthusiasm to return to gaming. It was not until the Wii that I found it fun again. And it is starting to wain again. Things have gotten stale. Way too much of the same.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

RenderSpotlight

The Switch is still not as comfortable to hold for long periods of time in comparison to the Wii U Gamepad.
I like symmetry with my controller. The thumb sticks are off set, that is why I ended up getting a 8Bitdo controller after going through 2 Switch Pro Controllers.

If the Wii U Pro Controller had gyro, I would use that instead.

Re: Soapbox: Chiptune Is Great, But The Impact Of A Full Orchestra Is Unbeatable

RenderSpotlight

Chip tunes are more simple, that means I can recall it easier.
I find that I can remember and hum along to simple tracks.
Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Blaster Master, Contra, NHL94, Blades of Steel, Rush'n Attack, Castlevania, are just a few that come to mind, but they all have easy to remember tunes that I can recall.

Once video game music got orchestrated, although very nice, I had a harder time humming along. The music was typically much longer and more complicated.

I remember hearing Panzer Dragoon for the first time and thinking how awesome it was, but I cannot hum that orchestrated song like I can the original Legend of Zelda or NHL 94

Re: Community: What Was Your First Ever Nintendo Game?

RenderSpotlight

Technically, my first Nintendo game most likely was Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600.

But for a console, it was the NES for sure.

But the actual game...my memory fails me. It must have been either 10-Yard Fight, SMB, Duck Hunt, Kung-Fu, Baseball, Excitebike, Golf, or Tennis. I know I played all of these games a lot.

As much as I enjoyed the Atari, the second I played the NES, I knew it blew the Atari away.

Re: Nintendo Removing Credit Card Support From 3DS And Wii U eShop In Japan

RenderSpotlight

@Kyloctopus Without looking, a few that pop into my head are Xtype Plus, Pier Solar, Regina & Mac, The Cave, Turtle Tale, Pixel Paint, Job the Leprechaun, Reptilian Rebellion, Star Sky, Star Sky 2, Gear Gauntlet, Noitu Love: Devolution, Forma.8

Just to name a few. I am sure there are a lot more.
These are for the Wii U. Some of these still might be available on the 3DS. Such as Noitu Love: Devolution.

Try looking them up on the Wii U. Unless they added them back, I have not been able to find them for a while. Especially Pier Solar and The Cave, those two have been gone for a while.

Games just quietly disappear.

Re: Team Sonic Racing '30th Anniversary Edition' Listings Surface Online

RenderSpotlight

After reading some comments, I like the idea of combining Sonic and Sega All-Stars and Sonic Racing Transformed into one modern game.

Sometimes SEGA confuses me.

I mean even if they had to drop Ralph and Danica or any other 3rd party special characters because of any licensing deals, it would have been no real loss and still been a more fun game.

Re: Team Sonic Racing '30th Anniversary Edition' Listings Surface Online

RenderSpotlight

Oh how I wished this game would have been either an updated Sonic Racing Transformed or Sonic Racing Transformed 2.

Team Sonic Racing is an okay game, but I think its biggest fault is it is not Sonic Racing Transformed. It is just missing that unique spark that made Sonic Racing Transformed so special.

SEGA doubled down on the Sonic Universe for this game. But in my opinion, the SEGA Universe worked much better for a racing game.

Even though I own TSR, I rarely play it.
However, I frequently play 2012's Sonic Racing Transformed either on the Wii U or Steam. These days on Steam with settings turned all the way up, it still looks pretty good. But being nearly a 10 year old game, an update modern version would be nice.

Re: Gallery: Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) In All Its Glory

RenderSpotlight

As my family uses our Switch consoles nearly 100% of the time docked, the only thing I see as a benefit is the the built in Wired LAN port. But that should have been the standard since the Wii era.
But at this point I have so many Nintendo USB to LAN dongles, it is hard for me to justify buying this.

Re: Yep, The Wii U Gets A New Game In July

RenderSpotlight

@GMACGAMER1234 At least at the moment, you can still download courses that others have uploaded in the past. Especially if you know the course ID and/or you can still find them randomly too. I downloaded some levels today.
Ultra Dolphin Revolution made 36 levels that I am currently downloading. Nintendolife did an article on it back in March and those levels are still able to be downloaded. Just search "Ultra Dolphin Revolution The last levels" in Nintendolife's search bar.

I believe you cannot upload any courses. However you can still make levels locally. So the game still has some value if you own it.

Re: Yep, The Wii U Gets A New Game In July

RenderSpotlight

@Zeldafan79 It is my belief that any console that can play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild natively inherently cannot be considered a "bad" console.

Also, I have always wished that the industry would have dedicated one more generation to 2D/2.5D games during the 32/64 bit era. The hardware of the time was just barely capable of 3D and considering that developers would have just come off the 16 bit era they could have taken 2D games to new heights. It was a missed opportunity.
In my opinion, the Dreamcast is where the hardware was ready for some good 3D games.

Re: Yep, The Wii U Gets A New Game In July

RenderSpotlight

@Tandy255
Nintendo seems to do their best work when their backs are against the wall.
The Switch is a massive success, and that success has largely piggybacked off of many games that are either derivatives of the Wii U or brought nearly straight over from the Wii U. I am sure they got some good stuff coming, but up until this point, they have been on cruise control.

Re: Yep, The Wii U Gets A New Game In July

RenderSpotlight

My Wii Us are hooked up and used frequently.

This new game looks good. So I went and watched a few promo videos on Steam. This promo video is toned down considerably.
I like that the devs are supporting the WiI U, but I will have to wait and see if this is my cup of tea.

Most recently been playing Sonic Racing Transformed and XType+.
I was thinking of getting 6180 the Moon.

Re: The Mega Drive Mini Is Getting Another Accessory Which Does Absolutely Nothing

RenderSpotlight

@weelz79 So your comment made me wonder. I have a Genesis and SEGA CD hooked up so I went and grabbed a watt meter.
This is what I got.
Powered off, together they used about 5 watts of power,
Powered on with a game that used both the SEGA CD and Genesis about 26 watts,
The Genesis alone about 23 watts,
The SEGA CD alone about 26 watts,
My CRT TV about 80 watts powered on and about 19 watts powered off.
Not so bad compared to some modern consoles but..
My takeaway is I need to get these on a power strip so I can turn them off. The vampire power for these is about 24 watts

Re: Rumour: Valve Is Working On A "Switch-Like" Portable Gaming PC

RenderSpotlight

@BloodNinja It took a lot to shift my perspective away from being a console gamer to consider a PC for play games.
The industry wide move to digital is what basically did it.
In the past I could live with new hardware because of the physical media. But with digital content, any excuses from companies not planning ahead to make it possible to allow me to play my entire game library associated with my account is not satisfactory anymore.

Re: Rumour: Valve Is Working On A "Switch-Like" Portable Gaming PC

RenderSpotlight

@Ghost_of_Hasashi
I have always been a console gamer. My Switch is docked 98% of the time. Despite owning most of the handhelds over the years, I have never been much of a portable gamer and I have never been a PC guy either, until very recently.

However, if the entire industry is going to force me to go digital, then it must be a two way street.
Steam allows me to carry my entire library of games over to whatever device Steam is playable on. I do not want to keep re-buying the same games over and over just to make them playable on a company's new console.
As long as it can be docked or they just forgo the "Switch" aspect of it, portability matters nothing to me. Just give me a Steam console that would compete with the other consoles that would allow me to carry my entire video game collection over to whatever Steam console/device I choose.
Like I said, this digital world goes both ways. If they want me to forgo physical, then I want to be able to carry my entire game library forward.
Now if by my some marvelous event Nintendo allows me to have access to all my digital content that is associated with my Nintendo account spanning the Wii/WiiU/Switch on their next console, then I would have to reconsider.

Sometimes the convenience of a consoles under the TV is worth some trade offs. I can still have a PC somewhere else.

I will still buy the new Nintendo console for Zelda or Splatoon or other Nintendo properties. But 3rd party games, I am finding that more and more I am choosing to buy them on Steam.

Re: Rumour: Valve Is Working On A "Switch-Like" Portable Gaming PC

RenderSpotlight

Valve has come a long, long way since 2015 when they introduced the Steam Machines. Proton, the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to work on Linux, may surprise many at how many games can actually be played on Linux. I would absolutely look into this.

If this or any other console like product that Valve may or may not produce, at least for me, would basically relegate Nintendo consoles for Nintendo properties only.

Re: Talking Point: When Was The Last Time A Game Cracked Your Top Five?

RenderSpotlight

Breath of the Wild and Sonic Racing Transformed are tied for number one, but the next are all tied.
I have been playing video games too long to only have a top 5. So many games so many different reasons.

1) Breath of the Wild (Wii U/Switch)
1) Sonic Racing Transformed (Wii U/PC)
2) Lunar: Eternal Blue (SEGA CD)
2) The Legend of Zelda (NES)
2) Life Force (NES)
2) Splatoon (Wii U)
2) Contra (NES)
2) Star Flight (Genesis)
2) Power Monger (Sega CD)
2) Wii Sports/Wii Sports Club (Wii/Wii U)
2) Nintendo Land (Wii U)
2) NHL 94 (SEGA CD)

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

RenderSpotlight

@invictus4000
I remember a time, in the not so distant past, when everyone in the comments were clamoring for Nintendo to release SNES games in addition to NES. How did that go?
Now I read that many people are clamoring for N64/GB/GBA/Gamecube.....I know that past history does not always predict future events. But......recently history suggest to me that I should have very little faith that Nintendo will do any better releasing games for those consoles.

For what this service offers, I wish the Switch would go back to the Wii/Wii U model, free online and give me the superior VC.
Thirty five dollars a year is more than enough for what I am getting. And if Nintendo increased the price, even if they offer more "free" games, I would have to seriously reconsider what I am paying for.
It is almost counter intuitive, except for rare occasions, if I get games for free, I find I play them less.
Also, if everything goes digital, as that is the direction the industry is going, I do not like that I have to start my game collection over with each new console. As a life long console guy (SEGA and Nintendo), I am sad to say that I am starting to buy more and more games for the computer. Because when I buy a new computer, I still have access to all my old games (and they often play better too). It really pains me to say this, but if Steam were to ever come out with a "console", I most likely would buy that. I would only by a Nintendo console for the few exclusives, basically Zelda.

Now if Nintendo were to do a 180 and carry over all my digital games from the Wii, Wii U, and Switch associated with my account, then I might reconsider. But this pattern of being forced to re-buy all the games again only because they released a new console is getting very, very old.

This is a two way street, if they are going to force me to buy digital games, then I want the perks associated with the digital format.

Nintendo is at their best when their backs are against the wall. When they are out in the lead....

Re: Soapbox: Be Happy, This Is The True Golden Age Of Gaming

RenderSpotlight

@invictus4000
I believe this might be the start of a "Golden Age" for VR. Because VR is another total paradigm shift in entertainment. Developers are forced to experiment and try to figure out what works and what does not.

I do not believe a "golden age" has anything to do with availability or quantity of a particular medium. Similar to movies, I think the "golden age" has more to do with experimentation and figuring out what works with a new medium. Back in the late 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's people saw real meaningful jumps in games. People were still figuring out what worked, and what did not. The "next" game or console was always a monumental event.
But these days, I see people perfectly content playing decade old games, even younger people. Back in the day, I never would have even considered going back and playing the Atari after the NES, nonetheless the 16 bit consoles. Games today seem to feel less dated. Decade old games still sell and play well.

The promise of better graphics was always the future. But I find it harder to get as excited about ray tracing as I was from the 8-bit to the 16-bit. My children are (were) as happy playing Chu Chu Rocket or The Legend of Zelda (1) as with Splatoon or SSB. I mean MK8 is still selling like crazy. The "wonder" of next, is just not what it use to be. The Wii was a shift, but as fun as it was at the time, it really was just another step to what was needed for VR.

Movies have never looked better either. I can watch near any move any time I want, but would anyone call this period of time the "Golden Age" of movies? I think not. There was a shift in moves around the time of The Matrix. But I have seen very little innovation since then, just fine tuning. 80's movies had a charm that is hard to replicate. But I am pretty sure that few people would argue that the "golden age" of movies was about the 1910's-1960's. Sure, movies took advantage of new technology over the years but the basic formula for success was established over those 50 years.
Video games are no different.

If I was pressed to give a date when the "golden age" ended for video game, I would say sometime after the end of the Dreamcast. The PS2 might be the "transition era", as there was still some learning for 3D games. But definitely the formula for a successful game was pretty well established after that point.

How's the 3rd book coming along?

Re: Talking Point: Wii Features We'd Love To See On Nintendo Switch

RenderSpotlight

Nintendo decided to remove many key features from the Switch that they had included in their older consoles and despite that the Switch sells like crazy. And even though people complain, the Switch keeps selling.
Nintendo has absolutely no incentive to add any of those features back.

Personally I enjoyed the Wii/Wii U era's features. They were fun, simple and intuitive. They had a cozy feeling. But I also appreciate the minimalistic nature of the Switch. No one is going to remember the Switch menu with as much fondness. It would be nice if they could figure out a way to have both.

Nintendo is at their best when their back is against the wall.
