@Meteoroid I completely understand that developers, just like people in every profession, are going to have off years - that's just part of being human. However, there's a difference between having an off year because maybe you just had a creative block and having an off year because you decided to cut corners in order to meet a deadline (the holiday shopping period). I don't see any passion or ambition in these games and that's what used to guide the development of the older games in the series. The only thing I see is greed and apathy, which is a shame.
@PokemonSB It's not a hard concept to understand. I think a lot of people just want a game that's fun and engaging. They don't want a 15-20 hour slog where you just win by pressing A (because you can't turn off Exp. Share). Regarding the people who wanted Platinum content in the remakes, I think that's a fair request given the amount of resources The Pokemon Company has but refuses to use to improve the quality of the games.
Think of it like this: if you said that Steph Curry (for reference: he is one of the most talented athletes in the NBA) was going to only score 5 points a game for the next 3 NBA seasons, then people would naturally be disappointed because they expect more from him. They know he can do better because he has consistently done it in the past. Apply that same logic to these more recent Pokemon games that have been released over the last few years. See the comparison?
Such a shame that the pinnacle of the Pokemon series (and really all of generation 4 was excellent) has been reduced to such a mediocre mess. I'd like to think that the casuals will wake up to this and stop giving their money to a series that doesn't deserve it, but that'll probably only happen when pigs fly.
SMT V deserves its success due to the quality of the game alone. It's the best game in the series for me so far. It should be able to sell far more copies so that more people can enjoy it, but as we all know, we live in a clown world where this is going to sell maybe 2-3 million copies while Pokemon BDSP is going to sell at least 10 million.
@Nintendoh I mean a lot of what's needed to be said has already been mentioned by others above regarding the mandatory Exp. Share, the uninspired graphical direction, etc. I'd only add on the 3GB Day 1 update that patches in a bunch of content that was randomly left out of the base game. The obvious lack of passion for these games and the fanbase itself is evident through the choices that were made in this game's development. At this point, these games are pretty much just a lazy, soulless product that GameFreak, Creatures Inc., The Pokemon Company and Nintendo use as a holiday title to make money. Regardless, I'd be willing to bet these games still sell over 10 million units and nothing changes. I guess asking consumers to think critically about the products they choose to spend money on is a pointless effort.
@Strictlystyles Pretty cringe response. This literally only negatively impacts someone if their only console is PlayStation. It's still going to be on Xbox and they'll eventually make it available on PC, likely through XCloud.
Yikes some of these comments. The apologists are coming out in full force as usual. Can't let anyone have a differing opinion or express legitimate criticism about Pokemon simply because it's Pokemon. Nope, we don't do that around here. Definitely not.
@Strictlystyles How so? Microsoft owns Bethesda now so anyone could have seen this coming. Want to know why I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360? It's because the Xbox platform hardly has any games worth playing. This way, Microsoft can move more Xbox units (but we know it's really because they want to get more people to buy Game Pass). Either way, they're fully entitled to do whatever they want with their IP.
To anyone who is still buying Pokemon at this point: If you're asking what the problem is, take a look in the mirror. The only reason why GameFreak and their development partners can keep cranking out these rushed, half-baked releases is because people keep buying them in the millions. If you want the quality of the Pokemon games to improve, then hold GameFreak accountable by, I don't know, maybe not buying the games?
It's a cheap marketing trick to make people feel like they have a choice and that the choice they make allows them to express their preferences. It makes the buyer feel more connected to the product because they see a part of their own identity in that decision. Plus, for people who are collectors/completionists, it pressures them into paying extra for both versions of what is essentially the same game. It's a scummy practice that needs to stop, but it never will as long as it makes money.
In the case of these Pokemon games, there's nothing wrong with criticizing a company that clearly has the resources to fund a game and go above and beyond to create a high-quality product. That's just consumers making an objectively true observation. When it comes to smaller budget studios with limited resources, I think those games need to be treated on a case by case basis.
These games made me go on eBay and buy a copy of the original Pokemon Platinum. I definitely spent more than I would have liked, but at least it was money spent on a game that's worthwhile (unlike these soulless remakes).
I have no intention of buying this game, but I believe that it's unfair to charge customers $60 for the limited amount of boards being included in the base game.
It's not hard to see why things happened this way with the NSO Expansion Pass. If large quantities of people are willing to pay for what is clearly a lazy, bare bones service, Nintendo won't have any incentive to fix it. That's how incentives work. If you want to blame anyone, blame the casual sheep who eat up anything that Nintendo craps out.
@Anti-Matter Really? Because I can't see the appeal of exploring the world just to battle NPCs, beat all of them without any effort by using the same 1 or 2 moves and then continue doing that until the end of the game. It didn't have to be this way, but you can't turn off Exp Share.
It's going to be a repeat of Sword/Shield where it's just a mindless slog from start to finish because your team is ridiculously over-leveled and there isn't any need to exert effort or even think to finish the game. There's legitimately no reason to play through the main story. Now, they could have made Exp Share a toggle like it was in Sun/Moon and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, but clearly that would have been asking too much.
@sanderev At the end of the day, you can label their behavior however you want to, but these people aren't doing it just for kicks. It's because they have valid concerns about the direction that developers are taking their favorite games. Are there people out there who just want to express outrage over every little thing? Absolutely and those people need to get a life. But I don't think the people expressing grievances over video games are doing it for the same reasons that airheads on Twitter are doing it when it comes to all the social justice nonsense (not to get off topic).
It just boils down to people wanting to enjoy video games and feeling like they had a good experience for the price they paid. No one likes feeling ripped off or let down. It's as simple as that.
@sanderev Yes, I'm aware that ILCA is developing these in collaboration with GameFreak but I'm not just talking these games - I'm referring to the last few generations of Pokemon games and how they have fallen in quality. Regarding the 'complaining', what other form of communication would you prefer people used to make their ideas known if GameFreak won't listen to feedback? People are entitled to express their thoughts and opinions. If you don't like that, then tough luck. Also, maybe don't complain about it so much. You're just being like all those other complainers who won't stop complaining that other people aren't complaining about what they're complaining about. See what I did there?
@rallydefault Providing constructive criticism implies that the party being giving said criticism is willing to make a good faith effort to take the feedback and use it to improve the features/quality of their products. GameFreak has proven that they intend to have a my way or the highway attitude about their games so there's no point in giving feedback. There's nothing wring with negative criticism if that's the only way fans can make GameFreak change. If they won't listen to feedback, then they'll at least listen to a decline in sales (which by the way won't happen because casual sheep can't think critically).
It sucks that the Pokemon games are going to be pretty sterile, meaningless releases going forward due to the fact that you can't turn off Exp. Share. Even worse is the fact that they're still going to sell millions of copies to sheep. I guess that's life sometimes.
Like best girl Ryoko @GameOtaku said, this was going to be an eventual pick up for me but I'm not interested at all if I can have the entire collection physically. Here's hoping that it's just the multiplayer that requires the download. If Panic Button can fit all of Doom: Eternal (a current gen game) on one cartridge minus the multiplayer, there's no reason RockStar can't do the same with 3 decades old games.
Game developers choosing to create DLC for their games has never been a problem with me as long as the base game feels like a complete experience. What's scummy about this is that it's Day 1 DLC that could have clearly been included in the base game, but was intentionally cut so that Atlus could sell it individually for extra profit. This is especially true in a monster collecting game like SMT where your compendium will never be complete unless you buy the DLC. The fiends being DLC is also super scummy. If only Atlus would stop with these abhorrent DLC practices, they would earn a lot of goodwill with their fanbase.
I purchased and beat Shin Megami Tensei IV after being severely disappointed by Pokemon X/Y. It was far superior to any modern day Pokemon game. There's no good reason to even purchase a Pokemon game anymore as the creators are actively insulting the intelligence of the players by making poor decisions like not allowing Exp Share to be turned off. To anyone who reads this comment and is bothered by the recent decline in quality of Pokemon, I highly recommend that you give the Shin Megami Tensei series a try. It's basically Pokemon but the game is deep and forces you to actually use your brain, which in this case, is very enjoyable.
Nintendo and intellectual property transparency are like water and oil. If some random engineer at the company recommended that they do hardware teardowns, he'd probably get a visit from the Nintendo ninjas just for suggesting the idea.
@Lady_rosalina I respect that. To be honest, I haven't bought a Mario game in a long time because I happen to think that the games have been pretty soulless as of late and just aren't entertaining. I bought 3D All Stars only because I assumed that the game would be difficult to find and I wanted it only for Sunshine (go figure). Just sad to see what the Mario franchise has become over this last decade or so.
@justin233 At this point, I honestly don't understand how people could still want more Mario games with how much Nintendo has milked the series over the years. I understand that people have different tastes, but after a while, you'd think people would start to get bored of it or something. Who knows?
I'll eventually get one with the white joycons as a collector's item but I'm afraid to ever use it. I've seen burn in happen in my time of selling Sony and LG OLED televisions and I doubt the quality of this panel is anywhere near the quality used in those TVs.
I have no intention of buying this game as it's just another low effort Mario-themed cash grab from Nintendo. However, I'm very interested to see what sales will look like in comparison to Super Mario Party. If it, and by extension, other games start to sell worse than the previous titles in the franchise then maybe Nintendo EPD will finally start caring again.
@TheFrenchiestFry Took the words right out of my mouth with this: "SMT always excelled in its atmosphere, narrative and darker undertones and that shouldn't be sacrificed to make it more mainstream for the people coming in from Persona 5 or P4G".
Give this commenter a cookie, a gold star and a couple of internets.
The Pokemon Company: "We're going to make Pokemon Unite completely free to play but include egregious micro-transactions in a game targeted at children lol".
Maybe work on making the games good again if you're going to market them with these animated shorts? Wait, just kidding. They only care about using the games as a means to sell merchandise.
I collect some games because they're games that I greatly enjoyed and I want to have them as part of my collection. Other games, I collect because I know that they'll be an investment for the future. I'll need them to pay off my mortgage.
Hopefully we get some sort of trailer soon that shows off the changes they made. The last time I read anything about this game, they said they were essentially rebooting the story and changing some of the aspects to better line up with the plot.
I hope this game and Project: Triangle Strategy sell well so that Square Enix finally has a reason to give us Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 3 (and not on mobile devices).
@CharlieGirl I appreciate you eloquently expressing that sentiment. You took the high ground in your response to his comment. Sorry, but I can't do that because Nintendo apologists really bother me, so here goes....
@Donkey-Kong-Fan There's nothing wrong with people criticizing Nintendo, or any other company for that matter, if they disagree with a company's business practices. It doesn't make them 'complete bungholes' if they do it respectfully and with good intent out of wanting the company to improve. Nintendo is a company - they're not your friend and they don't care about you. Yes, they make great games but they engage in a ton of awful business practices. Going as far as blindly supporting them and criticizing their critics doesn't do anything good for anyone.
@Friendly I would start with V not because Nocturne is a bad game, but because it's quite antiquated. I would try out V and it you like it, go back and get Nocturne (on sale).
@mr-duster I'm not sure that we played the same game. Pokemon Sword/Shield were extremely low quality and that was evident to anyone who was, I don't know....maybe paying attention while playing the game? The N64 tree, the games dropping down to a PowerPoint slideshow frame rate in certain parts of the wild area and during Dynamaxing/raid battles, the mouse cursor in the end credits, no National Dex, the paid DLC end game and the list goes on. Plus the game becomes increasingly more unenjoyable as it goes on - you're so over-leveled by the end game that you one shot everything because GameFreak removed the option to turn off experience share.
If we as consumers just accept this for all that Pokemon is ever going to be in the future, then that's all we'll get. And if that's the case, then we can't really blame GameFreak for wanting to cash in on an audience that doesn't care to think critically about the games they purchase if they can dupe them each time with low quality, low effort releases.
Anyone who tries to defend the games as being quality or being enjoyable is simply being disingenuous. If we want the games to get better, then we as a fan base need to be better and hold GameFreak accountable, we need to be informed about the products we're purchasing instead of just throwing money at anything with 'Pokemon' in the title. We need to hold GameFreak (owners of the most profitable media franchise in the world) to a higher standard to ensure that future games will actually be high quality and enjoyable.
@mr-duster They're obviously not doing anything criminal. I'm referring to the company's practice of releasing low quality games and still selling millions of units because their consumers are willing to buy anything that has 'Pokemon' in the title. I hate to say it, but that just goes to show you the level of intelligence among your average consumer.
@IronDaughter I started out with the original Pokemon Red/Blue on my (stylish) lime green Gameboy Color and played all the main line games. I told myself that I would never buy another game after what they did with Sword/Shield. I may pick up Legends Arceus on sale if it turns out to be worthwhile, but if not, I'm done with Pokemon too.

Re: Talking Point: As The Fan-Made 2D Metroid Prime Game Is Shut Down, Where Do You Stand On Nintendo's Takedowns?
Re: Atlus Drops Shin Megami Tensei V "Gabriel" Trailer
@Friendly I would start with V not because Nocturne is a bad game, but because it's quite antiquated. I would try out V and it you like it, go back and get Nocturne (on sale).
Re: Tomorrow's Pokémon Presents Will Be Pokémon's Longest Ever Direct-Style Showcase
Re: Tomorrow's Pokémon Presents Will Be Pokémon's Longest Ever Direct-Style Showcase
Re: Tomorrow's Pokémon Presents Will Be Pokémon's Longest Ever Direct-Style Showcase
