The first official tournament for Pokémon Unite, the free-to-play MOBA title available now on Switch, has been announced for Japan.
As reported by Serebii, this online event will take place on 19th September and registration is now open on Unite's official Japanese website. Sponsored by JCG, the tournament will consist of single-elimination matches up until the final stages, at which point the stakes are raised with more matches being played per round to decide the winners.
A maximum of 256 teams can take part but, as you've probably guessed, you have to live in Japan to enter. Of course, should the tournament be a success, it's possible that similar events will eventually start to take place in the west too – make sure to stay tuned for more.
Earlier this week, fan-favourite Blastoise joined the ranks in the game, blasting onto the scene with a deadly array of Water-type attacks and a killer outfit. This month also sees the release of the game's mobile version, which is due to launch on 22nd September.

Is that pay-to-win as well?
@Iggy-Koopa
Pokemon Unite isn't pay to win, not at all.
I've not spent a single penny, and I win matches on a regular basis with Pokemon the game gave me for free.
Really hope this concept comes west in time for the mobile release. Tournaments could give the game a real boost to its staying power.
I'm good (literally carried 4 dimwits on my back this morning), but I'm not tournament good. Would be interested to watch this though.
Sounds exciting. It probably will reach the west eventually.
The Pokemon Company: "We're going to make Pokemon Unite completely free to play but include egregious micro-transactions in a game targeted at children lol".
Nintendo: "Oh, first time?"
Amazing game! I haven't spent on anything and have my held items up to lvl 22 on each so far. I always use Zeraora and he still is pretty good to use!
You don't need to spend on anything unless you want the battlepass lol @NinjaGuy69
Totally agree you don't need to spend money I got my held items to level 23 @CharlieGirl
@Iggy-Koopa Look at me i'm winning just fine, the only thing thats pay to win is good team mates.
Typical MOBA, anytime you lose it's not because the other team was better. It's because you have bad teammates huh? Never because they outplayed you.
@Iggy-Koopa
Seeing as how the rest of the game isn't I'd assume not.
I finally made my way to Expert tier, and suddenly now that I'm playing with people who know how to play the game I'm having way more fun (I'm also learning how much I suck)
All I want is Roserade to be added in
@Iggy-Koopa too easy of a comment my good sir. Guess you haven't touched the game for more than an hour.
Great game. Good fun. Enjoying a a lot, though I doubt I can level tournament players. Solo ranking with Slowbro & Mr Mime.
@Bankaj Haven't touched the game at all, not my thing, but I had been told it had some pretty s***ty practices.
The game is just boring, your not even really playing against real players anyway it's all AI 🤷♀
@Iggy-Koopa
You have been told wrong my friend. Try out the game yourself and forge your opinion.
This game is free to play and you don’t have to spend a dime to reach master level.
@CodyMKW
What are you talking about? It’s true that the game impose an AI match if you lose too many times in a row.
Otherwise, you play against real players. Don’t spread your fake news please.
@codymkw True game is boring, there really isn't much to do in it
@CodyMKW I have never had one Match with AI.
@Benexcelsior But I really don't want to. It's just not my cup of tea.
