For long term fans of the franchise, or perhaps newcomers that are intrigued and preparing to jump in, the arrival of Shin Megami Tensei V on Switch can't come soon enough. It's that relatively rare type of release, a third-party exclusive that looks set to deliver a fascinating experience on Nintendo's system.
Atlus has now released another new trailer (above) with glimpses of gameplay and story, with the focus this time on the 'Nahobino'.
A blasphemous being, neither human nor demon. A Nahobino.
Harness forbidden power and create your own destiny in Shin Megami Tensei V.
As a series that had such an impact on Nintendo's portable hardware in the past, it'll be interesting to see how it fares on the current-gen hybrid.
Are you excited about the release of Shin Megami Tensei V on 12th November?

Why do I get the feeling that Atlus is spoiling everything about this game before it releases? I'm just going to keep ignoring these trailers until the game finally releases, just so I don't get spoiled on it.
Man that soundtrack is really coming around.
@VoidofLight Idk, Japan tends to spoil alot of things before they are released. Maybe it's just a common thing to do.
To be fair western media has been going down that route too and with the rise of social media everything gets spoiled due to leaks.
Best thing you can do with something you find interesting is to have the will power to cut yourself off until you finally witness it yourself.
@Vexx234 Yeah. Ever since I played Tales of Berseria blind, I effectively decided that I should probably cut myself off from looking at many trailers for games before they get released. Mainly since it leads to a better experience when playing them.
It looks like this has a bit more of a story focus than the previous games, definitely the right move. I hope this turns out great, it feels like it's been forever since the last proper entry.
God I love how drag the whole outfit is. Sissy that walk!
I think this will be the best game this year, at least for me.
@Quarth Literally the game I'm most excited for this generation. Atlus has been on a roll since the 3DS, and this looks like their more ambitious game to date.
@SwitchVogel Story-wise, I'm expecting to to be about on par with the SMTIV duology, which is about right for me: Nocturne doesn't have enough story development to keep me invested in what happens to its characters (especially considering they get more insane every time you stumble across them), but I certainly wouldn't want something with endless cutscenes and dialogues like Persona 5, either. Shin Megami Tensei is one of the few JRPG franchises out there that still feels primarily gameplay-driven, and I wouldn't want that to change.
"Blasphemous being, neither human, nor demon"
Demi-fiend: peeks behind bush
@Ralizah Agreed with you there, making this a dense novel like Persona would completely ruin it for me. I just want there to be a little more character development and a more central conflict driving things forward, and this seems like it'll have that.
@SwitchVogel Persona is Persona. Completely different beast from SMT and whenever some elements kind of cross-polinate into other SMT games from Persona such as the super archetypal character writing in Devil Survivor 2 and to a lesser extent SMT IV Apocalypse, it really sticks out like a sore thumb
SMT always excelled in its atmosphere, narrative and darker undertones and that shouldn't be sacrificed to make it more mainstream for the people coming in from Persona 5 or P4G
@VoidofLight This has been my modus operandi for the longest time, not only with games but also with movies and TV series. This may have played a part in my enjoyment of certain things that end up getting a mild or negative reception for most people.
I can already tell that's gonna be a game of the year contender for me along side Monster Hunter Rise, hopefully it'll sell a lot of copies
Why are we still getting Japanese dubbed trailers…?
@Ralizah Yeah, it looks amazingly good. The character designs, the graphics, the world, the battle system, the music! Hopefully the story's good too!
Just a little over two months away now, cannot wait. Everything about this game shown so far from demon designs to the soundtrack have been great.
@Quarth Narratively the only thing I'm really concerned about are the alignments, as it's the only aspect I feel like none of the previous SMT games I've played have fully mastered. Atlus tried to make your alignment feel like the natural result of your actions in SMT I and IV, but that was irritating because the games never gave you a good way of tracking your alignment points, and often didn't tell you if something was going to drastically alter your alignment. On the flip side, IV: Apocalypse practically did away with multiple routes completely, and only half-heartedly integrated them into the very end of the game. SMT III's Reasons are probably the best balance they've found to date on that front, since they're primarily decided by clear dialogue choices you make throughout the game, but I'd still prefer to see them decided more by consequential story choices instead.
Also, Nocturne has the issue where one of the story paths feels way more complete than the others, which undermines having multiple endings in the first place.
And since it seems we're back to law/chaos, hopefully the writing is better for those routes. Another thing I liked about Nocturne's Reasons is that most of the ideologies you were presented with felt more philosophically compelling than the standard vicious social darwinism vs theocratic fascism choice in other games.
Hopefully they've found a satisfying balance with SMT V.
@Timptation Kinda wondering about that myself. This game is supposed to be fully translated and voiced in English by the time it releases in November, so surely they have enough material, two months out, to dub a short trailer.
Even Nocturne HD's trailers close to launch were voiced in English. And that's just a port of an old PS2 game, not the expensive, ambitious new entry in their flagship series.
@SwitchVogel I agree. While it was stunning, the initial reveal of a VERY Nocturne-ish looking SMT game at E3 did worry me a bit, since I prefer the IV/IV: Apocalypse approach where you're frequently in contact with human allies. But everything since that initial E3 showing has convinced me it's going to have a decent amount of character interaction throughout.
@TheFrenchiestFry I kinda wish they'd spin the IV: Apocalypse approach off into its own subseries. The mix of fun character writing and challenging, balanced gameplay is the best of both worlds, IMO.
@Timptation Because it takes place in Japan
@TheFrenchiestFry Took the words right out of my mouth with this: "SMT always excelled in its atmosphere, narrative and darker undertones and that shouldn't be sacrificed to make it more mainstream for the people coming in from Persona 5 or P4G".
Give this commenter a cookie, a gold star and a couple of internets.
@Ralizah I actually think the lighter tone of Apocalypse actually benefitted characters like Navarre so I wouldn't be opposed to this
This looks bloody awesome!!
Wow, I guess some people do play SMT for story. Personally I found most of them to be forgettable simply because where it excels in setting and ideas, it fails in the storytelling department.
I just focused on the best part of SMT games. Collecting demons and fusing them.
You guys are late to show.
@The_Pixel_King Male. He's a male protagonist
@The_Pixel_King Male, but with delicate features.
This game can't look better!
@The_Pixel_King Male but a big old queen. Lovely stuff.
Is this not going to have english voice acting? Seems odd considering the remaster of Nocturn had all new voice acting added to it with an english dub. And if they really want the mainline series to take off the way Persona has, they need to treat it with the same kind of budget.
@MARl0 My understanding is that the game will be voiced in English, it would be strange if it wasn't. I mean, the barebones Nocturne remaster was dubbed, so I expect them to do the same with this obviously higher budgeted game.
@Kreko Nocturne is a good game and a perfect warm up for SMTV, I believe. It hasn't aged well in some parts, but mostly holds up. Finished it a couple of months ago and had a fun time!
@Ralizah Hopefully they've found the perfect system this time!
@Kreko Well, it doesn't offer anything new, it's mostly just an HD port with a few quality of life improvements. But I enjoyed it!
@Quarth Do you have a source for that? I haven't heard anything about it.
@MARl0 Atlus/Nintendo mentions it in a tiny text in this trailer: https://youtu.be/JHyt_-Rz0h4
