The Cars 3 video game will be coming to Nintendo consoles, it has been confirmed.
Developed by Disney Infinity studio Avalanche Software - which was saved from extinction by Warner Bros. Interactive - Cars 3: Driven to Win will follow the events of the forthcoming movie.
The game will be coming to PS4, Xbox One and Switch, but perhaps the most surprising thing is that it's also coming to the Wii U. Described as a "pick up and play party game", it's all looking pretty shiny at present.
Here's some of the PR:
Picking up after the final big race in the film, Cars 3: Driven to Winextends the storyline of Cars 3 with all-new action packed adventures and takes players through a high-speed competition that is filled with both familiar and new faces. Players will be able to join Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez as they prepare to take on rival racer Jackson Storm. The game features more than 20 customizable playable characters including popular heroes from the Cars franchise and next generation racers. Players can also select their favorite race environments from a series of iconic settings from the film, such as Radiator Springs and Florida International Speedway, with over 20 unique tracks to choose from across 13 different locations.
Cars 3: Driven to Win is a game that empowers players to master their driving skills for the ultimate competitive racing experience. With six thrilling modes for gamers to learn and advance their abilities, players can progress their character through training and tests of racing proficiency that unlock new modes, tracks, characters and more. Players can hone a wide variety of skills and abilities including Drifting, Turbo, Two-wheel Driving, Driving Backwards and Side-Bash. Each unique mode and ability allows players to explore the deeper gameplay mechanics and earn rewards for their expertise. Cars 3: Driven to Win provides an exhilarating, action-packed experience where training and skill give players an edge in a racing experience that anyone can win.
Additionally, players will be able to experience Cars 3: Driven to Win with their friends or on their own to perfect the various racing styles and modes available to them. Available for pre-order now, the game will include local split-screen cooperative play, allowing players to compete or team up and play at home together, making it easy for friends and family members to join the race – and the fun – at any time.
John Blackburn, Vice President and Studio Head, Avalanche Software, had this to say about the news:
It's been an amazing experience to work with the team at Pixar once again for this new game for the beloved Cars franchise. With Cars 3: Driven to Win, we wanted to create a game that allows fans to extend their experience with this great film, and also feel the thrill of speeding through the tracks, participating in races, and mastering tricks and techniques for fun with the whole family.

Perhaps Soul Axiom won't be the last Wii U game after all... and I was so close to a complete collection!
Another must have for Switch.
Wow, surprising.
At least Wii U still got the games.
Better play Cars 3 with Super Eurobeat songs, just like Initial D.
Multi-platform drifting!
I'll probably get it. My 3-year-old loves Mater and I'm trying to get him into videogames.
Skidmarks incoming! And not the kind left by tyres.
Lol, I just posted this in the fourms........oh well. This is the first I heard about it. My kids might like it, good to see more games coming for the switch.
Awesome. Both the Switch and Wii U need more titles like this to bolster the userbase, even if they're just cynical cash grabs. Disney games have generally been quite good in my experience (regardless of the quality of the source material), if not a little on the short side, so fans of the Cars brand should enjoy this.
Got Avalanche confused with Black Rock Studios. Now there was a great developer for racing games. Miss Pure and Split Second now...
Wow, another Wii U game. Is the first Darksiders still coming?
I think we now know what the 2017 Game of the Year will be.
I really hope this gets cancelled for Wii U. I don't want the system's last game to be a piece of shovelware trash like this.
I believe Disney needs to find a new dev to work with. Their IP is up there with Nintendo. But when they're not on a movie screen, they're ruined by bad execution.
For how particular they are with their movies, their games are rubbish.
@TheWhiteFalcon Don't worry, I'm sure Wii U will be getting Just Dance games for years to come.
I think it is a good idea to release this game for the Wii U. If you think about it, there are children who have a Wii U, PS3 or a 360, but don't have a chance to get a Switch, PS4 or Xbone.
@rjejr like how Just Dance 2017 is on Switch, Wii U AND Wii.
lol for a second i thought this was Project CARS 3. And I thought wait wtf happened to PC 2?!
No way Project CARS is coming to a Nintendo console.
@TheWhiteFalcon "I don't like this, so I don't want others to be able to play it either."
@TheWhiteFalcon Avalanche is a good developer, I wouldn't rush to call it that just yet
Who said the Wii U is dead?
I'd rather just play Mario Kart Deluxe but the more games coming to the Switch, the better, I'd say.
Race-O-Rama on the Wii was actually pretty good. I'll keep an open mind about this one.
Since movie tie-ins are usually quick cash grabs (although there are a few exceptions to that) I will probably wait until after I see a few reviews before I make a decision.
@olrodlegacy I frequently have interchanged Soul Axiom w/ Axiom Verge myself.
@TG1 All Axioms, innit
@JWesCampbell depends. I remain underwhelmed by Sega Genesis take on The Little Mermaid myself, but Disney IP games have had a whole bunch of classics and simply fun titles among them - even those based on TV shows (my gaming childhood owes you one, Capcom). And their history as a first-party game publisher brought us the jewel that was Disney Infinity - still one of the best Disney games to ever exist. 3.0 is the only game I own in physical format on PS4, but it's sad that the franchise saw its ultimate untimely demise at the same time when Switch was released - and this demise is very tragic in itself. I don't even love it for the toys deslore them being very lovely figurines in themselves - it was an ultimate creative sandbox for the Disney metaverse. Wish they had salvaged that - after all, there are not dissimilar titles like LittleBigPlanet which never needed to be "toys-to-life" on top of what they offered.
I guess someone needs to think about the children.
@Yasume u know is coming for every console right?
@olrodlegacy do u really have every WiiU game?
@Jessica286 Not yet, but not far off...
I like fun racing games so I won't dismiss this out of hand. Won't be a day one buy but if it controls well it can be a nice change to Mario Kart and Fast racing (didn't like sonic racing).
While I'm happy Disney is allowing for console games again instead of mobile, this game looks like garbage.
Damn wen did forza start looking this good
This game looks terrible! Especially when you put it against Mario Kart 8 or hell even indie game Fast RMX looks better than this.
It's like they used a 15 year old game engine or something with max resolution of 480p that could have come straight from PS2 or the first XBOX era. Tjeez.
The movie game curse strikes again.
@olrodlegacy oh wow, that is dedication. I admire u already!!
@Jessica286 Aha I did a pic of all my Wii U collection on Instagram (same name) just before the Switch came out!
@Sourcecode i was about to say Interstate '76
@TheWhiteFalcon Nice attitude. This won't be the last game for Wii U, and besides, there are still many families like mine who invested in the Wii U (and still enjoy the Wii U) who have young kids who love Cars. I personally was very happy with this news. Sorry you weren't.
I will get that for the Wii U! Looks fun!
I crave some proper driving games on the Switch. A Need for Speed, even a port of Real Racing 3 from mobile please EA (yeah I know, kill the freemium cash cow, though I've sunk 600 hours in it and not paid a penny), or pretty please, I want to see an advert for F1 2017 on Xbox, Playstation AND Switch.
Ridge Racer is the only thing that hit the spot on 3DS - Need for Speed: The Run was as much fun as having the runs and Mario Kart... OK, maybe I'm just not very good but being hit by a shell for the umpteenth time while in sight of the finish line and dropping from 1st to 4th gets a bit boring.
Looks like a great game for me to not spend any money on.
i'm outraged this franchise is being held back by the last generation and so on and so forth.
Well this sort of stuff will be normal output by 3rd party western developers, not including indies
oh boy, now that is some compelling 3rd party support!
@rjejr And the orignal wii also lol
@therealgamer @MadAdam81
Cars 3 on Wii would probably sell better than on Wii U. And I'm not even joking. Wii U can play Wii game discs, so it would be a win-win.
Oh well, guess SD games have to die at some point. Except Just Dance of course.
Decided to watch the video, it looks like a Wii game. Oh look PS3 and Xbox360 support, it could have had a Wii version.
Well nice to see that (in contrast to the console's producers...) at least some developers/publishers still care about the Wii U.
@olrodlegacy I will look it up. Dude!! U have 4 WiiUs WTH!!!!!
Yes This is a movie tie in, however, Avalanche are a good developer and have made great CARS game and in the past along with Disney Infinity, Cars Playset was dope.
Ugh, people are already calling this shovelware. If you have played any Cars games in the past, you'd know that they're quality titles.
I'm in, but wishing this was part of Disney Infinity 4.0.
(sobs uncontrollably).
Looks decent, but it's licensed, so add some extra skepticism people!
It seems like it could be decent. Definitely targeting the kiddies which, is not a bad thing. To any WiiU physical game collectors, this could end up being a pretty rare release in the future. Coming out this late in the life of the U I don't see it getting a very big production run and probably no restocks. They'll just keep it digital after the initial release.
I never heard of the movie, but my wife, kids and myself hate anything that disney throws (at least since the late 90's...movies haven't been good anymore in my opinion and ours). Other than that, I've always wondered why no one actually looked at the old cars from the 80's that had the same facial features and looks as this, and never sued disney for it...however, no one sued disney for Wall E, as that robot resembled Short Circuit and also a nintendo character...R.O.B.
Anyways, the game looks kind of fun, and will be a nice addition to our PS4 library...just until some nice kart-racing titles come to the console, or until we finally purchase a Switch with Mario Kart. If my kids can stand playing through the awful Kung Fu Panda: Showdown Of The Legendary Legends game, then I'm sure they can play through this one too...at least until I get the Disney Afternoon collection on PS4, and have some fun with the old NES titles of Chip And Dale, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales and Tailspin...does anyone know if this title is coming to Switch???
@LiberatedAnimal If it's even findable. It'll be one of those games that you buy on day one, or at least within the week...baring the full price, or it just simply disappears...seems to happen with any console. My kids really wanted that Monster High New Ghoul In School and Barbie Puppy Rescue on the PS3...I wouldn't pay the high price and told them to wait until they go down...now, can't find them at all.
@Mii_duck I know what you mean and feel. I don't own a Switch yet and got rid of the Wii U, but it seemed that the racing genres have faded on nintendo consoles recently. N64 (which I still own) had a heck of a lot of racing gems...so did Gamecube (which I also still own), and Wii had some, but they weren't the 'REAL' racing sims, more cartoony kart-racing titles that turned out to be more shovel ware than good. Wii U, besides NFS Most Wanted, was kind of lacking, and 3DS didn't really get many either (it's taking me forever to find Asphalt 3D, as the previous 2 on DS were pretty good). Hopefully Switch gets love, and not just the usual shovel ware titles and nothing but platform titles and party games...nintendo really needs the "REAL" sports and racing sims to add to the library and mix it up.
@olrodlegacy I'm putting together the entire library as well... as far as I know I need about 15 more but maybe my list is incomplete?... I have 135 or so... where can you find the complete list? My searches have turned up incomplete lists...
I'll give this a try, especially since it's coming to the Wii U.
This is a game by Avalanche. They make good games. Stop the blind doubts, people
Looks good in the video, let's hope gameplay matches love this type of racer.
@olrodlegacy @CliveWinston Try Wii U Collector's thread on RetroCollect.com https://tinyurl.com/jwx9bfp which will point you to FinnGamer's list https://tinyurl.com/gv23x5u People on there will help you with all your collecting questions.
@Doompanda thanks!! that looks to be a pretty thorough list... although I'm not getting every single version of every single game, it's cool to see what's out there..
@CliveWinston You're welcome, but it's FinnGamer who deserves the credit, his work has made it a lot easier for the rest of us. Look him up on YouTube, he's got a video showing his collection.
Never played the second one, assuming there was one for the second movie. Actually had a blast with the first one. Actually looking forward to seeing the reviews for it.
All the people moaning about graphics. You honestly think a child the age this games based for will kick and scream at the graphics being bad? No. All they care about is seeing Lightning and Mater.
