The Nintendo Switch, as a concept, will be vital in its success or otherwise. Nintendo's portables have consistently outsold its home consoles, notably so in the current generation. Yet Nintendo is keen to promote the Switch as a home console, primarily, with the added bonus that it can then be swapped out for portable gaming.
The latest UK TV ad for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild makes this point, with a photogenic man in a nice house chilling with the game, before remembering he has a flight to catch and grabbing the system. We admire his confidence in being so unprepared for a flight, and he seems to have nothing but a Switch on him for his journey, unless the bus he uses has a luggage area out of sight.
We're being pedants, admittedly; it's not actually a bad advert.

Will you be close to missing flights because of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild?

Nintendo Switch's photogenic men are confirming something important: nobody looks attractive when sitting in an aeroplane seat.
"Switcccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhuhhhhhhhhhhhh"
Nice succinct ad that shows off the systems key selling point. Good stuff.
More of this straightforward messaging akin to the original trailer and less like the first half of the Presentation.
I'm fascinated to see just how big the ad blitz will be leading up to March 3rd.
A UK Nintendo TV ad. checks temperature in Hell
Good advert, but it has to play everywhere; this is meant to be Nitnendo's Big Comeback.
See this is what I am talking about! This feature montage, is what makes the Switch a must have for me. I really, really can't wait until March.
Pssst. NOA...make sure we get some of these too will ya? I guess someone threatened the marketing department.
TV? Nintendo? Ad? Haven't seen one of them for years.
I wonder on which channels and which time they're running the ad?
@BLP_Software they call them TV ads but they might as well be called YouTube videos because that's the only place that shows them
A TV ad? Will it be on actual real channels?
This is also the advert in Germany lol .
A good advert. Though I would've preferred they ditched the "taking it on a flight" scene and opted for the "hiding it from my boss at work" scene
Show off a VR game with joy cons!
Once again, I find myself at a Nintendo console launch where I can't afford what I want. Not sure whether to Wii U this game or whether to wait.
I expect the Mario Kart ad will include a segment of handing the second Joycon to someone.
@BLP_Software a U.K. Nintendo TV ad not on Cartoon Network
So white game boxes, same size as Wii/Wii U ones?
COME ON!!! NINTENDO, stop it i cant take the HYPE anylonger lol, the Hype train is on overload
@ZurapiiYohane64 Depends on your definition of sexy.
@Grawlog
lol
@Grawlog was just about to say that haha
Nice ad but hope it plays often cause I have heard awful things about nintendo uk's marketing.
I am starting to get a little concerned about screen scratches with it going in and out of the dock repeatedly.
I really hope they keep up the advertising, because I saw absolutely no advertisements of the Wii U. I honestly don't think I ever saw a single one.
@Enigk Surely they would put enough space in the dock that it could fit without scraping the dock. Plus, you could always get a screen protector. (Obviously those aren't bulletproof, but they help)
This is solely what the Switch should have been. And all the launch exclusives should have complimented this.
I hope they can improve battery life. The guy in commercial would need to recharge before he takes off.
I'll be getting screen protector too
@Mii_duck The boxes are clear.
They are advertising the switch in the uk. A long time coming.
Makes sense that they promote it with Zelda as 1-2-switch could work if it was in a bundle for the casual gamers.
A commercial 44 days in advance? That's the bigger news to me. Nintendo usually waits until like a week before, or after, to market anything. Win
@Arnold-Kage
Can you imagine the looks you would get milking imaginery cows on a plane? probably be kicked off the flght!
That Nintendo Switch sound
click
It's more memorable than the games
Makes you wonder why they didn't use a similar approach on the presentation. Have some famous faces playing the Switch or some band doing the rounds.
@Megas My girlfriend wanted me to buy the Switch so she didn't have to. Jokes on her, I was gonna buy it anyway! .......
Excellent ad. This is the kind of focused marketing Nintendo needs more of.
Come fly with me, let's take off to Hyrule!
Quite a good ad. My YouTube has been bombarded with ads for Mario Odyssey bizarrely. My two year old gets quite hypnotised.
He has a Nes classic and a switch, did he rob the shipping truck.
@ieatdragonz
Nintendo UK's marketing department does its best. The problem is it's a small, old dog who occasionally whizzes on the carpet.
It's about time they started to try and sell their hardware. Marketing for Nintendo in the UK sucks!!
Also, Nintendo seems to think that we spend much of our time globe hopping. What's up with the music as well?
If I saw someone on the bus with an unreleased Switch console playing Zelda, then I'd be a lot more excited than those passengers.
I thought PEGI 12 was the same as an ESRB rating of T, but Breath of the Wild is E10+ here in America. Does PEGI not have an E10+ equivalent, or what?
@Pink_Floyd Good eye, never would've spotted that. Curse you, Nintendo, and your subliminal messaging!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE well, they aren't exactly going to show a bunch of gamers taking their Switch to the crapper while continuing to enjoy Breath of the Wild (which I assume will be the main use case)
The switch wouldve been a pretty solid buy for me, but the lack of launch titles (and not really being a zelda fan) has me turned off to it for now.
I know somebody with Bipolar Disorder, when they're in a manic phase they overspend huge amounts of cash on techy
non-essentials. They have also randomly booked flights out of the country with no plan or forward thinking.
This guy reminds me a lot of them.
Cool advert!
European Zelda artwork is awful
@Megas there is absolutely nothing that ties that girl to being his girl, shes just sat next to him
"We admire his confidence in being so unprepared for a flight"
This had me laughing out loud. Nice writing, Thomas!
@Edwin Well he used the same T-shirt and jeans so he didn't much preparation to start with. Also, no big bag or anything, not even a messenger's bag to put the Switch in it.
@Mii_duck White translucent boxes, and they appear to be as tall as a Wii U box, but not as wide (think 3DS box).
The box is a Wii U / 3DS hybrid, too.
This isn't a UK Nintendo Ad. They don't exist.
I'll bet it's fan made. Cease and desist incoming.
@mjharper No no, they are way smaller. Unless the scale in the last image is wrong, they are about the size of the screen of the Switch/Wii U gamepad. Similar to the Vita games' boxes (yeah, haven't seen many lately).
This seems like it will be very practical, as the boxes are just a bit smaller than the console itself, easy to stack!
It's a good advert they just need to pump this out!
@Kroko Really? That's not the impression I'd gotten. Thanks for the heads up.
Do we have different looking age ratings on our boxes now? The 12+ symbol is black and white in a more rounded box, rather than being orange or green in a more square box. Looks better. I really like how clean the new box art for Switch games look.
...awww... he left unprepared, just like Link ...on a Bus and a Plane?...it's dangerous to go alone! Take this..

He doesnt need any luggage, he has the Switch!
Actually a pretty good advert. Make more like this and the Switch should have better marketing than the Wii U.
@JamesR
@Enigk
The Switch's screen will not physically touch the front end of the dock. Just don't insert it in at an angle and you'll be just fine.
I can't help but wonder why the dock doesn't completely cover the screen. It's a small nitpick, yeah, but I'm curious about the reasoning behind such a design choice.
@KirbyTheVampire
They did make one. It just got banned.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/01/wii_u_advert_banned_in_the_uk
@Calllack
It's been 3 months since we've first heard it and it's already a timeless sound.
It's extreme competition for the GameCube's jingle.
throws hand in air and snaps fingers like Kimishima
@ThatNyteDaez
You know, I was about to correct you saying that if it covered the screen, you wouldn't be able to grab it, but now that I think about it, it could have covered the screen and Nintendo could have implemented a depression in the dock so you could fit your fingers in there to take it out.
OR, it does actually cover it, but all of its representations have been purposely positioning it to stick out a little so you could see the console inside the dock so the point would get across easier that you can take the system out. It could well be a marketing strategy for the people who don't know. Almost all the tactics concerning the Switch recently has been pure genius. I really like what Kimishima is doing at the helm, minus slightly more nickel and diming, but that's a nit pick.
Nice, short, (hopefully) clear commercial!
Keep 'em coming Nintendo.
@BLP_Software "Depends on your definition of sexy."
I like how you think. You're okay, man!
Hopefully this is just the start of an ongoing and prolonged campaign that ramps up with big releases and holidays.
@Moshugan Hey, my wife to be is the definition of bloody gorgeous. But others would say otherwise. I just have an open mind.
Is it just me or is the Switch boxart for BotW a bit lame. That shot of Link glancing cheekily over his shoulder.... not doing it for me. I prefer the more abstract cover used for the Wii U pre-orders:
@iGen @ThatNyteDaez I've read that the IR sensor is right in the top of the Switch screen, so it could be that that part of the console has to be unobscured for using the controllers. At least, I think that's what I remember, brain's a bit fuzzy.
@gcunit I'm with you with that in preferring the older artwork. I suppose they want to emphasize the openwordliness, but seems a shame.
@Sakura @gcunit I don't like the Euro box art too much, but the US variant looks great! I wish they had the alternate version of the cover on the flipside!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I have the cartoon channels on a lot over Christmas (to brighten things up a bit, you know), and every other advert on those was for some Nintendo game.
So they definitely do use TV ads a lot, but they target their ads in a way that skips over you.
And that's Nintendo UK I'm talking about, btw.
This is great, if they put effort in to stuff like this it will really help switch have a good presence on the world stage for launch. The world needs to be told. I met a guy 2 days ago that used to play Nintendo and still really liked it but handnt heard of the switch. Not sure which rock he had been living under but it shows that advertising like this is important
@Not_Soos
For E10+ to PEGI 12 and Teen to PEGI 12 I think it depend on what content inside. Cartoonish boxing game, Mild Fantasy violence ala Kingdom Hearts instantly rated E10+ or PEGI 12. While Teen rating has very vary aspect that still okay for Teen player. Content like Sexual reference from The Sims series, Violence like Street Fighter or Monster Hunter still can be considered as PEGI 12 also, though ESRB rated with Teen label.
@k8sMum
True but most people in my country still look freaked out when a 27y/o plays videogames as they consider it for kids.
@Not_Soos : Each classification body has their own guidelines according to what is considered to be socially acceptable in the societies that these schemes are intended for. Therefore, game ratings will not always be consistent from region-to-region. The closest equivalent to the E10+ rating in the PEGI scheme is 7+ (and in Australia, the closest would be PG). Extreme disparities between the various rating bodies is not unusual.
Likewise, Breath of the Wild has been issued an M rating in Australia (which is the closest equivalent of PEGI's 12+ and ESRB's T ratings).
@FengLong I'm an adult and don't watch that channel. I'm talking about the mainstream terrestrial channels. And I'm talking about Wii U as well. The last ad they had was for MK8, which was nearly 3 years ago.
I don't know about you guys but that woman on the plane seemed preeeeeetttttyy impressed... sold
He definitely should've chatted up the bird sat to his left on the plane... well that's what I would've done.
Ok, but nothing special. Such a awesome looking game needs a great commercial. Maybe on the Wii u version (ah, who am I kidding!)?
Can't wait to see this on TV. Only thing I don't like so much is that he starts off on the Pro Controller, which might lead people to think that's the standard controller. It does show the grip, but I think the "wow" factor works better if it's as it was in the reveal trailer. Playing Zelda on the grip controller, then sliding the Joy-Con out and onto the side of the console to swap to handheld.
