Re: Gallery: Capcom Shares Stunning Concept Art For Monster Hunter Rise's Frost Islands

Meikahidenori

@JaxonH i actually turn that radial menu off. Unless you're familiar with using it it can be distrating and sometimes annoying when you got no idea how to use it (I actually hate it, but that's personal preference, I have a friend who loves it but she liked it in World where's I found it frustrating). It's optional which is nice, just like any of the settings. It's worth just wasting a hunt to mess with them and figure out a weapons attack buttons and combos as well as do a hunt where you just watch what the monsters attack patterns are. They'll enjoy hunts much better if they give themselves time. Your advice is good, but that's still alot of information to give someone in a demo. Better to keep it simple until the full game with the training mode comes.

Also depending on weapon and monster armour, bouncing off a monster isn't always bad. Gajin hunter has tested this before in one of the older games and it still applies so far. Some monsters armour will break after a certain threshold has been taken with that type of damage as it's still using raw blunt damage stats though it's not something you should rely on as it's not going to kill the monster by any means though can mean you just need better gear - basically you want to try and stay out of yellow but you can sometimes get away with it (All damage matters - just ask any prowler player from GU, both boomerang and melee builds did weaker damaging hits, but they could still take out end game bosses when given enough time. I hope he does another video on it for Rise) Sharpness isn't everything either, especially with hammer and hunting horn, both rely better on raw so the bigger the green bar on a weapon the better as that's generally the sweet spot.

@TheWingedAvenger MHR isn't really that much of an open world game though... More like a large map maller than the size of ocarina of time's Hyrule field. Open worlds let you explore at your own pace, something you can't fully do in MH without being penilised by the timer for. It's why the scout files mechanic in world was hit and miss because it felt like it was leading you around by the nose same way a white dotted line does in the Witcher does.

I honestly don't mind the muted colours when certain monsters pop out of the environment but I do agree that there's alot that don't making it bad for people with colour and vision issues. There's an improvement from world though that at least newer and older monsters do stick out visually from the background (mitzune in all its red rage certainly does), but unsure if the likes of Anjinath will as the colours from World were designed to be more realistic and his muted tones might be an issue. My biggest issue is in the demo so much is on screen that You have to fiddle with it to clear it up though it's also interesting looking through the options to see what features are there to make visabilty better for players. I'd love a hue or saturation slider personally, but games aren't built around that as an option just yet... They're too obsessed with grit atm. Also your examples are still heavily stylised games that aren't using a realistic art style as a base. Again, the Witcher or is probably a better example, at least in terms of the switch version being a bit brighter than other consoles (not perfect but I definitely struggle less with the switch edition on quests with it)

Re: Nintendo Unveils Monster Hunter Rise Special Edition Switch Console

@Shambo fair enough. Though sometimes you have to ask because there's people who say this about monster hunter and yet are 100% fine playing horror games or shooters where you brutally murder or kill people. These games aren't ment to be for everyone. I personally don't play many shooters anymore other than TF2 and I'm not into horror, but with monster hunter it's like a dance. The game at least makes you respect what you're up against and learn from your mistakes to overcome huge odds weighed against you in late game which is more than I can say for alot of other games out there, something that gives its appeal to me more than most.

Again certain games aren't for everyone. If you ever do feel like getting back into it though, the community is always there to welcome you with open arms.

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

@TheWingedAvenger the thing is it isn't. Monster hunter stories is bright because it's a completely different style. With Rise we've only seen one map and a few of the monsters, sure Mitzune is the only colourful one atm but many many other colourful monsters have been shown off in trailers. When you are going for a semi realistic style you have to accept not everything is going to be neon, pastel and look like a cartoon. Besides, it will be muted because of where it's set - Japanese shrines always have a muted colour palate regardless of media because they're places of spirits, religious/cultural significance ect... It wouldn't make sense to paint it electric neon green and pink. May as well ask for the TF2 Pyro colour change mode in the Witcher (and while hilarious the idea is in principle, it's something that just look utterly awful... Also how rarely do you go into a mountain forest? It's full of green and brown!😅) .

Will it come to Australia this time? Didn't see the Animal crossing one (hopefully because people bought it out) though we did get the let's go one for pokémon which was around for a few months. While I'm not looking to get a new switch yet (it's gotta cark it first) this one looks brilliant. Hope you guys who get one look after it! (I still have my Wii Pro controller for Tri, I actually never used it... Probably should but I don't want to trash it)

Also... Here's hoping there's a Zelda one this year too! I'd rather alternative designs than getting a pro system.

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

Meikahidenori

@JellyPop totally understandable. I live in Australia so it's like $70 - $80 just for the standard edition. However in my case there's few games I enjoy, especially new releases as I have slowly lost interest in alot of genres over the years... But I know I'll always get my moneys worth out of a portable MH title. MH 4U and Gen kept my sanity after having each of my kids and becoming house bound most of that time (I didn't do too well after having them, they're beautiful kids but the body just falling to bits and hospital stuff but we're all ok now) and despite having BOTW and other big games that take ages to loose yourself in, I found one or two 55 min hunts every few days were enough when I needed a break was plenty to keep me going as feeling like I conquered something helped so much.

I understand the game might not be for everyone, heck you'll find many MH players who have 'couldn't get into it, eventually came back months or years later and it finally clicked' stories, some it never just was ment to be, others it took a different mind set, ect... After it's all said and done, you play what you know you're going to enjoy.

Not going to lie though, it has one of the best online communities you'll find anywhere outside of animal crossing. (and I've been in my fair share, from the sims, TF2 ect.. But the MH community beats them hands down as one of the most helpful and friendly)

Maybe I'll get to hunt with you one day in the future... Who knows? GU goes on sale quite often, wouldn't be surprised Rise will do the same.

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

Meikahidenori

@JokerCK doubtful there will be a pc version of Rise, however the console team would have started on a new game the moment Iceborne dropped so another game isn't that faraway. Rise was in development the moment GU was completed and had a 3ds build long before the switch was released (as GU in Japan was originally on the 3ds, making Rise the first official portable title of fifth Gen) so it's been in development for the past four years. There's usually both console & portable in each generation so next console version will be RE engine as well, but sixth gen. Hopefully it's not too long await, but four years is pretty typical.

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

Meikahidenori

@FroZtedFlakerZz the demo is unfortunately never aimed at new players, which does it a great disservice. However in the full game there will be training modes (looks like an entire training room in the trailers) so it will probably be the most friendly to new hunters the series has ever been. Even if you get stuck the community is amazing, they make tutorials, tips and tricks videos and of course online you meet some of the nicest players (you do get morons some times like every game but it's actually kinda rare with MH being a co-operative experience). Glad to see people giving it a good go though! I'm a third fleeter (played since Tri) and you'll find many players in the community who are like yourself, tried it and put it down, tried again later and eventually it clicked. Think of it more like a dance between you and the monster instead of a typical hack and slash, you might find it more fun.

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

Meikahidenori

@Yanina it's probably one of the few big games you can play casually. Each hunt has a 50min timer though hunts can be alot shorter than that depending on how you choose to play. If you play less than five hunts a week and only play key Village quests you'll easily finish the main game in about a month or so (allowing time to get full sets/mixed set... Maybe two months?) Everything else is 100% optional content, always has been and not something your forced into doing. It's more fun with friends though and you'll probably find alot of hunters playing multiplayer and occasionally poking at the story. It's an easy game to sink many hours into and kinda like animal crossing you don't need to dedicate all your time into one continuous play though unless you really want to.

The community is also one of the best around, you'll always find people who are willing to play with newbies and help you out.

Also... You can pause it... The best thing the portable versions ever have as an option!

Re: Dead By Daylight Is Getting A Colourblind Mode Following Provocative Comments By One Of Its Designers

Meikahidenori

@durr reminds me of the sims community. For years they've been asking for more diversity in skin tones and finally six years later we got them. Unsure why it took so long but they finally pulled through without making it into a huge farce. (the community did that themselves before the update by not reading information properly...the devs thankfully didn't make it worse)

Re: Dead By Daylight Is Getting A Colourblind Mode Following Provocative Comments By One Of Its Designers

Meikahidenori

@JustMe it surprises me how difficult it seems to be to add sliders to ajust colours or give options to change a few icons/text is for some developers. I mean it's not like we're asking for the accessibility that TLOU gave to blind players (as it's 100% possible to play that vision impaired) but just the ability to make things like the UI and other Important information visible when colours are indistinguishable or just impossible to differentiate.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying The Cloud Version Of Hitman 3 On Nintendo Switch?

Meikahidenori

I really wanted to play this on the switch (as my pc barely ran hitman 2 but i still got through it all) only to find out this morning it isn't available in Australia on the switch... Yeah really disappointed as I would have been happy to purchase. Annoying as my Internet connection runs quite well but eh, what can you do? Our stupid government was told not to use copper in the nbn roll out and only now... Several years later realised they should have bloody listened.... 😭 Hope you guys who can play it enjoy it on my behalf!

Re: Soapbox: The NYT Thinks We're Gaming Too Much, But It's One Of The Only Things Keeping Me Sane

Meikahidenori

As a parent myself with young kids, things like the 2ds are a blessing, especially when they need a break from each other. My oldest(5) is even teaching her little sister (2) how to play around with Nintendogs and it's the sweetest bonding moment (and also some of the quietest as they're generally pretty noisy). Sometimes my eldest plays pokemon and untitled goose game with me and together we've turned our animal crossing island into a giant kids playground.

When I was pregnant (both times) my 3ds and my Switch were both my sanity lifelines because we live nowhere near other family or friends and being able to interact with them through games helped so much and reminded me I wasn't all alone sitting around pinned to a chair under a sleeping baby miles away from anyone (heck my youngest Still pins me down to a chair when she's got the chance). Games are a huge part of my life, some great memories with my own brother and parents were around video games (not all of them, but there's a few that stick in the mind) and I'd like to share this with my own kids, but at their pace with what interests them.

We also paint, play puzzles and usual kids stuff I mean they do have alot of downtime away from technology, but I'm finding they're learning alot having spent time together regardless of when, where and how we do it. Play is good for everyone.

Re: Soapbox: I Wasn't Going To Play Monster Hunter Rise, But The Game Art Is Too Cute

Meikahidenori

@Lord the palamutes can't heal the hunter, set traps, use bombs ect, there's certainly a trade off for not taking a palico. I'll probably have one of each for solo, but definitely take the palico online because there's alot of people who barely heal themselves let alone play support and I'm not going to have them cart on me or my HH. Though frankly I'm mostly playing to have a good time so I'm down for playing with new players more than most and there's going to be alot of new hunters with Rise. (welcome to the guild, enjoy your stay!)

Re: Preview: Monster Hunter Rise Feels Like A Glorious Homecoming For The Series, Not A Side-Story

Meikahidenori

@CarlosM87 not really. I usually use them to scope out a map and gather materials since that's more or less why you're doing them, especially if the weapons you've chosen to use need ammo... Harvest tours are kinda essential otherwise you waste precious zenny on them when crafting is free (and you can craft by the batch apparently in Rise so the rumour mill goes, yet to try that myself since I rarely use range weapons.)

GU wasn't the best example for a starting point to be honest since it's like buying a greatest hits album, but usually the story while basic shows off the setting nicely, the best one was 4/4U so far and hopefully we're going to get something much better than it. (i have high hopes since its the portable team behind the wheel - they're the ones that made it a success in Japan with MH portable on PSP so they're old hat with portable games)

The RE engine looks amazing, pretty sure it's the first game that's not a remake of anything that's using it so to be sure future games on it will look top notch. Capcom are wizards at making big games fit on tiny hardware just like Nintendo so I'm interested in what the future holds.

Re: Preview: Monster Hunter Rise Feels Like A Glorious Homecoming For The Series, Not A Side-Story

Meikahidenori

@WiltonRoots it is and isn't. It's kinda weapon/build dependent really, though honestly the best build is one you enjoy using however you do get out of it as much as you put in. Being portable it's possible to sink alot of hours in just by doing one hunt a week or everyfew days so it's something you can slowly plug away at between other games.

It's extremely basic in the demo so if a weapon doesn't click don't be suprised that it suddenly does once you play the full game. There's actually going to be a training mode so it'll do a better introduction job, but already there's alot of customisable options like gyro controls, camera lock ons ect so you can set it up how you want for a better experience. I play 90% in handheld as I prefer to play MH on the go so turning some of the visual noise off like dmg counting, toning the effects down and removing the radial menus really made it clearer for handheld multiplayer chaos. It's not something everyone will like, but it's worth trying once.

Re: Capcom Wants To Know What You Thought About Its Monster Hunter Rise Digital Event

Meikahidenori

@Strumpan yeah Agreed. Personally I like some of the goofyness in Gen & GU that sadly was lacking in World, though for a greatest hits style game they really slap dashed parts together. I love the more creative monsters though, things like the Ketchawatcha in 4U and Quarpeco in Tri really left an impression along with Nacarcos & Ahtal-Ka in Gen and GU because of how unique they were. Not to say World hasn't got any, Pukie - pukie and few others really showed off how varied monsters could be, but to me it didn't feel like there was very many.

You never know what will come in future though. They did really well considering they had to build the models from scratch with World, so who knows? Honestly I like the idea of having both console and portable games again since they always offered something different and everyone gets to hunt.

Anyway hope you're enjoying the demo, I'm playing through it again on my husband's account since i used all my goes up (he doesn't mind, he doesn't play MH so I can go nuts) and loving most of it thus far. I Have a small gripe with the spiribirds, but it's probably because we currently can't see what buffs the teahouse gives for hunts and we can't fiddle with the petalace atm so it probably won't matter once the full game comes. Been a bit too excited for months!

Happy hunting!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 9th)

Meikahidenori

Hades, spiritfarer, actually get my HR up over the lvl 50 threshold in GU (on my fifth run, recently did a all Prowler run which was great fun but going back to my Hunting Horn for this one) and playing the stuffing out of Rise because my favourite weapon finally got a overhaul and man riffing off melodies one after another while bashing away with the HH is just amazing! Can't wait for it to come, the MH portable team are bloody wizards.

Re: Capcom Wants To Know What You Thought About Its Monster Hunter Rise Digital Event

Meikahidenori

@IronMan30 I'd recommend GU, mostly because of the Prowler mode. It simplifies the mechanics, however still have a deep rewarding system to customise the cats.. And the hunt difficulty levels are the same as they are for regular hunters. It's how I got my daughter to play, she loves it and is catching up to me with it.

I also recommend looking up GajinHunter on YouTube for his tutorials. They're some of the best you'll find.

Once Rise is out though, try the weapons training area they have added to the to the game, it looks like it's going to be a promising feature for new players.

Re: Preview: Monster Hunter Rise Feels Like A Glorious Homecoming For The Series, Not A Side-Story

Meikahidenori

@JuanGartner look in the options menu, and you'll find a tag for weapon controls. This is they've been in every single game and are nicely added in the demo. You want Hunter Notes - weapon controls. It doesn't hurt to fiddle with the options as well, you can turn the Radial menu off, DPS counter off ect as well as set auto lock ons for the big monsters. You can even remap some of the controls, though unless you already have an existing preference from previous titles I would leave them as they are.

Also, longsword is a terrible recommendation to give a new player. I would suggest duel blades or sword and shield because they're faster and you can get in and around with better movement. The best movement weapon is the Insect Glaive, but I'd definitely look up the buttons first - then after those it's the Hunting Horn which while starts slow (like the hammer) but once your buffs start you'll move pretty quickly.

Reason why I say leave longsword until you get the full games training mode is because for a weapon with High damage, you sacrifice speed and less strikes in order to have it. It's not a bad weapon, but by no means is it like any weapon in a typical hack and slash game. Ditto with Hammer. I can't say alot for the long ranged weapons since I'm a Hunting Horn main from 3U, but they also have their own skillsets. If you're still stuck, check out Gajin hunter on YouTube, he has some amazing tutorials to get you started.
