This March will see Capcom's Monster Hunter series return to the Switch with the all-new release, Monster Hunter Rise.
To celebrate, Nintendo is releasing a "special edition" Switch on 26th March for 38,400 yen (that's the same date as the launch of the game). The Switch, Joy-Con and dock are all appropriately themed, and there's also a code for a copy of the game. The system has also been confirmed for European release:
Here's some PR:
The Nintendo Switch MONSTER HUNTER RISE Edition features an image of Magnamalo, the game’s flagship monster, on the dock, along with other evocative MONSTER HUNTER RISE-themed designs that adorn the console and both Joy-Con controllers. It also comes bundled with a download code for MONSTER HUNTER RISE plus the Deluxe Kit DLC and bonus content.
Deluxe Kit DLC includes: "Kamurai" Hunter layered armor set, "Shuriken Collar" Palamute layered armor piece, "Fish Collar" Palico layered armor piece, Gestures (4 Jumps), Samurai pose set, Kabuki face paint, "Izuchi Tail" hairstyle.
Bonus content includes: Palamute Retriever Costume layered armor, Palico Forest Cat Costume layered armor, Novice Talisman

Nintendo will also be offering a Pro Controller (sold separately). It's arriving on the same day for 7,480 yen. See more here.

Reservations for both the console and Pro Controller will start on 27th February in Japan.

@JaxonH is about to lose it. I do wish it would have more red on it for rathios.
I wish the dock was available to buy separately...
Another 10 copy special edition that'll never hit store shelves. Why do they even bother making these?
😐😋🤤
I wonder if my wife will buy the story of me needing a brand new switch because I accidentally stepped on my old one, the dock, the joycons and the pro controller all at the same time...
Eh...
Don't like the Black color. 😐
White dock from ACNH + Blue Joy Cons grip from Super Mario edition + White and Neon Blue Joy Cons + White body tablet are my Perfect combinations. 😏
@turbotri “I swear honey, the switch just jumped out the window.... I need to have a replacement, you know it’s my therapy escape!” 🤣
Ugh, I may have to buy another switch.... this would go great with my MH4U 3DS.
Great there goes the SCALPERS...........
How is Jax not first? Somebody wake him up!
I might get that pro controller though. Yep totally saving for that Zelda Edition this year.
Holy cow, a new pro-controller?! This is the first one we've had since SSB Ultimate! I was convinced they weren't doing this anymore. I'm still kind of salty a bunch of deserving games, like Fire Emblem 3 Houses and Luigi's Mansion 3, for example, never got them.
Could we get some more regular colors too?
Either way, I prefer special edition controllers to consoles. I'm not gonna buy a whole additional console(that I already have) for a game special edition 99.99% of the time. But a special edition controller? I'm usually super on board for, for games I like!
Its gonna be EXTREMELY difficult to talk myself out of buying this, since I already have a switch.
Definitely picking up that controller though
I think I still prefer the look of my Rathalos Edition PS4 Pro, but if this is released in the UK, I'm still going to buy it.
Holy salamanders, that is a beautiful Switch. If only I hadn't just bought a new Switch a few months ago. It might be time for me to get a new controller, though.
@Ryu_Niiyama @Snatcher
No surprise they're doing this but it's very cool. It will sell insanely well.
Nice.
While I have been collecting most of the Joy-Con colours (I bought the Fortnite bundle for the Joy-Con and dock, and sold the rest), I don't have grey ones (nor do I want them), and I'm kind of relieved that the Joy-Con are a little on the bland side, so this is an easy bundle to skip. I really want the Mario bundle solely for the Joy-Con straps though (and the grip is also really nice), but will I be crazy enough to buy the bundle purely for the straps? suspenseful music
I will probably nab that Pro Controller though if it comes to Australia or import it if the cost isn't outrageous.
This is another example of Nintendo's greed and evil nature. Now I have to buy another Switch to get this version. It should be free if I trade in my original Switch.
Ive never played a monster hunter game, and probably never will but holy crap, this looks amazing
Is it just me or do the "flames" look like sperm?
Too bad the demo sucked
@pilot
You should give it a shot. Buy Rise and make a genuine effort to learn the mechanics. It’s the best video game series of all time imo (and in the opinion of many, many others). Everyone loves monster hunter, they just have to play long enough to realize it 😉 (for real though, it’s a game that demands you learn how to play properly before you really start having a lot of fun but once you do, oh my gosh, it’ll make every other game feel boring by comparison).
I happened to get into the series by chance. Was a more casual gamer, 1st party Nintendo games only, bought MH3U on Wii U to try, gave up after the first hour because I wasn’t hunting big monsters yet and it seemed boring. Coworker kept going on and on about just wanting to play some MH. Bought a Wii U specifically to play MH3U. So I decided I would hunt online with him once or twice. And that was it. 600 hours later and I had found my new favorite video game of all time. We’re talking 48 hour binges staying up all night playing, call ins to work, etc. It’s an addiction like nothing else (barring actual drugs).
30 hours into the demo already. That’s more than many full price games. And there’s only two quests lol. That’s how fun it is. It’s INSANELY GOOD. But I don’t recommend you play the demo because it’ll just turn you off, because it doesn’t give you time to properly learn all the mechanics. And most gamers treat it like they treat every other game- hop in, do a 15 minute quest, say “I don’t like this”, move on and tell themselves they just don’t like Monster Hunter. Which is unfortunate, because it’s not like Zelda or Mario where you “get it” after 15 minutes.
These are the five stages of every new Monster Hunter player, ever.
1) Rejection Game feels slow, sluggish, mechanics seem designed to annoy you. Why no monster health bar? Why do roars interrupt you? Why does it take so long to get back up when knocked down? Why does moving feel so slow when weapon is drawn? This game sucks. I don’t like it.
2) Intrigue Game still feels slow and sluggish, mechanics still seem designed to annoy. But the fun is starting to peek through here and there. Player feels first thrill of hitting a wall with a monster that smashes them. Player still sucks and has no clue what they’re doing, but they are starting to make incremental improvements in select areas.
3) Excitement Game is starting to open up. Player is learning the mechanics, and while they still feel somewhat overwhelmed, they don’t feel nearly as overwhelmed as when they started. Player is getting the rhythm of their combos down. Player is learning to dodge. Player has come to terms with the animation commitments the game revolves around. No longer is the player fighting without sheathing their weapon in between attacks. Player is starting to learn basic tactics.
4) Enlightenment Now the player’s eyes have been opened. They see the light. The game that felt so sluggish and unresponsive and boring is now incredibly exciting, and the thrill of the hunt continues to lure them more and more. They get it now. The combat system now feels more incredible and exciting than any combat system of any game they’ve ever played, with frame perfect precision. The player now understands this is a very special game. They realize they had been wrong about it.
5) Addiction The player is now hopelessly addicted to Monster Hunter. There is no other game that can pull them away at this point. They’re all in. Monster Hunter is life. Hundreds of hours stack up. Weekend binges without sleep. Work call ins. If it weren’t for the fact all games must inevitably come to an end, they would play for the rest of their natural life.
Most never make it past stage 1 before writing it off though.

@Mattgyver87 those sperms are really big compared to the dragon. Oh no...
I like the Pro controller & the design on tbe Switch is cool but grey joy-cons are kinda boring. Really wish they would have spiced it up a bit.
It looks nice, but it feels like it could use a little more color beyond the grey and gold. Maybe some dark red or dark blue would work too. Love the back of the Switch design though, that's awesome.
Welp, guess we aren't getting a Switch pro any time soon.
@Burning_Spear dumb
Those joycon are lovely. And I totally wanna get that pro controller. I hope it comes to the states!
Ready to go broke trying to get this from Japan.
Good. That clears that up.
This GUARANTEES there's no Switch Pro this year. Absolutely no chance Nintendo makes a special edition Switch that 90% of Japan would want only to then release a better console version 6-9 months later. Zero chance unless Nintendo doesn't give a f about Japan. And they do.
The only limited edition switch console I like and want because it's based off on one of my favorite video game series. First off I thought that was gore on the deck, but I looked up close and it was just the new monster. Sad. But this gave me an idea for my switch, I'm going to draw white fatalis on my switch deck in red n gold! YES new project again
Interesting development! I stand corrected. This definitely makes a Switch Pro in March less likely.
I'm wondering if a Pro model is still planned for 2021, but now just pushed back to summer/fall. I'm still convinced that a refresh is happening sooner rather than later.
@JaxonH Called it! Knew you'd be here. Anything less than a five paragraph Monster Hunter preach would have disappointed me.
Shame that this isn't releasing in North America.
Never been so happy to be living in Japan! Gonna be an expensive day, since I want that controller and the amiibos also. 🤯
Just a tiny bit too late, I had been looking to buy a new pro controller for some time but since they were taking so long to come up with new designs a few weeks ago I decided to give the 8bitdo controller a shot instead.
But it was a great controller and a bit cheaper too so I suppose in the end it worked out.
@Burning_Spear you dont have to buy it, nobody is gonna make you
Man. Hope this comes stateside. I do need a new switch, and this is gorgeous.
What's with the sperm? Or is it dragon sperm😟
Shame about the kick stand
Would’ve been easy money from me had this been announced in North America awhile back.
@Burning_Spear who is the greedy one here? 😉
I wonder how Burning Spear survived the 3DS era. Lol.
Speaking of which! Just because they’re releasing Mario and Monster Hunter editions of the Switch, don’t think they’re resting their laurels on a new and improved model. The 3DS came out while the DSi was still kind of fresh. I remember there were several versions of the 3DS, then I foolishly upgraded to the 3DSXL, which had several special editions, and then I foolishly upgraded to the “New” 3DSXL, which also kept coming out in various special editions. Mine was the MH4U one. Then I was torn when the faceplates N3DS came out, and then the Samus N3DSXL. Ultimately I stuck with my MH4U edition. Which. The A button no longer works and the battery doesn’t hold a charge. The silver paint is chipping away too. It was my baby. I kept it armored and cared for... but not enough it seems. They also hammered us with all kinds of 2DS models.
I’d honestly be afraid to get a special Switch. Knowing my luck, I’ll get a nifty newer Switch model, like this MH one, or the inevitable Zelda one... then a few months later we’ll get the Pro announcement.
@Northwind yeh I seen this and thought the same was really hoping to get the switch pro with a monster hunter feel I got the monster hunter new3dsxl so was hoping for a repeat
@Burning_Spear is obviously joking guys, and quite funny it is too. Like many here, before I even opened the article @JaxonH came to mind 😊
Ehh...... An easier pass than I thought it would be. Was hoping for more colour.
Does it come with Drift? If not, I'll feel a little confused...
@link3710 Because they plan on selling them in Japan like the article said??? I always said reading comprehension is far more important than spelling. But do hope that it comes to the U.S. =
Like usual with most Switch LE, that huge Switch logo on the dock and the Switch it's back stand in the way, such a shame because the art could be so much better then (Sony their PS4 LEs and Nintendo their 3DS LEs to name few, did it much and much better)
man this is tempting, but i really wanna save up my next switch for a possible switch pro
This pretty much debunks the Switch Pro in March rumours.
I'd happily get a second pro controller for this! And a third if Xenoblade X is ever ported and gets a custom one.
It looks quite nicely. Hopefully the Pro Controller makes it to the West
I only like the pro controller. Everything else i just "too much" imo
Looks like it was designed by a secondary school kid using copy and paste. Honestly, most of these special editions look terrible and really aren't worth the cost.
It's been confirmed for Europe on NoE Twitter.
Enough with the same etched dull look, how about a uniform whole different coloured console with some tasteful graphics and logos.
It seems like a bit of a rough time to release this model. People would have to choose between this, the Super Mario themed one, the regular Switch with varying colours, and the Switch Lite ALSO with varying colours.
That Pro Controller is really nice, but I'm not a fan of Monster Hunter.
It looks great. That Pro Controller is tempting!
Looks pretty sweet but I have no desire going through the process of getting/setting up a new Switch just for a themed design. Even though MH is my favorite and most played series all I want is the game. If I needed a new Pro Controller I'd most likely pick that one up but as of now I'm good with the one I got.
Its funny seeing this, just because I was one of the MH fans that complained when we didn't get MHW for Switch. I just didn't think I'd see the day of Monster Hunter Rise. Now look at Capcom, pouring it on us like a dump truck full of awesome! That Switch is tempting. It would go nicely with my MH4U 3DS.
I need the dock and pro controller. They look so cool
It’s still not for the us?
All of these need to be set to one per customer, per address. Companies are not doing enough to prevent scalping because they make money from it and don't care. It's almost to the point I'd say we need a temporary law that says you cannot sell a product for more than 10% of it's MSRP if the product is new to market(within 1 year.)
This wouldn't fix the situation with everything but opening it up to older products would would cause too many issues.
looks great but I like the mario one better. dat pro controller doe
Anyone could put decals on thier switch
I almost feel sorry that I got a Switch before now. Though it was definitely a good investment for the past year.
Will it come to Australia this time? Didn't see the Animal crossing one (hopefully because people bought it out) though we did get the let's go one for pokémon which was around for a few months. While I'm not looking to get a new switch yet (it's gotta cark it first) this one looks brilliant. Hope you guys who get one look after it! (I still have my Wii Pro controller for Tri, I actually never used it... Probably should but I don't want to trash it)
Also... Here's hoping there's a Zelda one this year too! I'd rather alternative designs than getting a pro system.
This. Looks. AMAZING. I don't even play monster hunter, but I want that really bad. I'm hoping they make one BOTW themed though, so Imma hold out. However, I really hope the Zelda design (if they have one) will be similar in style. Wow!
@Quix You missed my point. Every time they make special editions there's so little stock that they all get bought up by bots before any actual consumers have access to buy them.
That's why it's pointless to make these.
@link3710 depends. The pokémon let's go switch was still around for three or four months in stores here in Australia while I didn't see a single Animal Crossing one. It depends on the games popularity in regards to these special editions. If there's a Zelda one I bet that'll be ordered out of stock the second it's announced.
@ColeTD or they continue what they usually do with zelda editions and make them gold painted. It's not like they can do it to the cartridge anymore due to its size.
Really? No one is bothered by the blandness of these limited edition switches? Like come on nintendo i can get nicer actually colorful joycons on Etsy. What a disappointment,i mean I'm still getting the pro remote but at least the ps4 pro had a sweet red Rathalos to go on theme with the monster.
I like it, but I don't think I'll play the game. Last time I played a Monster Hunter game, I felt really bad about chasing a (virtual, but whatever) limping, visibly and audibly suffering and damaged, majestic creature, wounded by my actions, into its nest where it retreated, all of this with gear made of several hundred "monsters" "the good guy" killed before that. And why? to make better gear, to kill more creatures. Before that I really enjoyed the series, sunk hundreds upon hundreds of hours in many different entries, solo, local (when my partner back then and I got both the Wii U and 3DS version of MH3U - I loved how save data could be swapped and we could play local co-op, one in 3D and one in HD), online, and even more once i could finally play as a bunch of felynes... But it suddenly felt terrible, and I didn't finish that quest and didn't return to the game. I do still see that it's a great game, with beautiful artwork, and beautiful special edition consoles, and that there's no REAL animals harmed, it's just not for me anymore. Maybe I'll play MH: Stories 2. It does look great, and less... Monstrous.
@Meikahidenori Yeah, but Pokemon special editions get stock. Monster Hunter Special editions usually end up going for 2-300% over MSRP via scalpers at launch.
This bundle assure the Switch will remain on top in Japan.
I was about to get the Animal Crossing one, then I saw the Mario one, I see this one, and think, surely there is a Zelda one coming?
@JaxonH Decisions, decisions. 😉
Nice to see a code for the game in the box, Nintendo likes their themed consoles game free on occasion.
@link3710 Still a dumb point to make really doesn't make any sense but ok =:3
@Shambo
Dude, it's just a game. Chill.
I rather get the Pro controller and that will be all since I already got MH CE preordered along with Amiibos.
@SwitchForce the monster hunter CE only comes with 1 amibo
Who did you pre order the others with as in the uk amibo pre orders don’t seem to exist?
@Quix It's called being salty after several past failures to obtain one, there wasn't a point I was trying to make.
@Aya-chan a game that gives me ptsd about real life things I witnessed happening to some of my good childhood friends (yes, some of them were sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens,... All of them ended up killed by humans who I was supposed to be able to look up to, only further confirming my distrust in humanity and friendship towards other animals) and other animals I never personally knew, in the forest and in the industry, is not a game for me. I'd argue I'm quite "chill" about it, when I could easily go into a blind rage about the real life things it reminds me of, and just say "I'm not playing it anymore because it makes me feel bad" instead.
I play quite a few games where I don't fully agree with the ethics (most games really), but this one is both that and a painful reminder of personally traumatic experiences, even if I wasn't the real victim, but the one to live and tell the tale. I don't think anyone would willingly play a game once it reminds them of their friends being butchered. I have a hard time with slaughterhouses in (horror) games as well, unless the horror is that the player character was to be submitted to slaughter and needs to escape, that makes me even twist it to something positive: maybe someone will recognise the horror.
I can't stop drooling!!!
@Shambo fair enough. Though sometimes you have to ask because there's people who say this about monster hunter and yet are 100% fine playing horror games or shooters where you brutally murder or kill people. These games aren't ment to be for everyone. I personally don't play many shooters anymore other than TF2 and I'm not into horror, but with monster hunter it's like a dance. The game at least makes you respect what you're up against and learn from your mistakes to overcome huge odds weighed against you in late game which is more than I can say for alot of other games out there, something that gives its appeal to me more than most.
Again certain games aren't for everyone. If you ever do feel like getting back into it though, the community is always there to welcome you with open arms.
I NEED this. I'm buying MHR when it comes out too.
Shut up and take my money!
The Switch Lite has questions
Yale could use a Monster Hunter Switch Mr Burns.
@gojiguy who needs a switch pro? the switch is, for what it is, powerful enough. i guess basically every switch owner has a xbox, ps or pc anyways - so if you wanna play a graphical masterpiece - play it there
but since switch is getting 4 years old - who knows - it's nintendo. in 2~3 years we might get the "switch U"
@Meikahidenori Yeah you won't catch me playing military shooters (I did play some Warface on Switch, but that's basically like playing airsoft, not like invading a country as "heroes" and killing any resistance as "terrorists"; and I would maybe replay a game like Spec Ops: The Line should it come to switch, because of its great anti-war story). Cartoon violence as part of a complete experience (a good story, nice art direction, fun gameplay,...) I can still enjoy, even when it's over the top. And true, MH has all of those, and it could even be seen as a compliment to the creators that they managed to make me respect the virtual "monsters" almost as real creatures, but that also means that, as you said, this game is no longer for me. If it was about defending against senselessly violent monsters, it'd still be the best "boss rush" game ever, because of how real it all felt, and how dynamic and multi-layered strategies had to be, without ever feeling cheap. But to me it feels like invading the homes of often harmless creatures unless provoked, and butchering them in their nests when they retreat.
The more cartoon-ish Stories spin off still has my attention, since I know these are quality games, and with its different art direction and different combat style, it's easier to enjoy from my perspective.
And indeed, I have no doubt the community would be quite welcoming, I have mostly positive experiences playing the series online. Some occasional rotten apples, but you can't blame the game for that of course.
@link3710 hahaha, ok yeah I feel yeah, do want one myself so I hope they do get localized in the U.S =XD
