I got into Hollow Knight through the music. When I finally got around to playing it I fell in love with the world right away, but didn't think I would finish because it was so hard (I don't normally like action games, I prefer slower, thinkier games). I got the first ending and felt accomplished enough to put it away. Two days later, after being unable to stop thinking about it, I pulled it back out and finished everything except the pantheons
Also, I want to point out that the Death Mountain cow's alternate dimension sisters in Majora's Mask were so desirable that you literally had to fight off an creepy alien hoard to keep them from getting abducted
Not much time for gaming this weekend, but I have partial playthroughs of Xenoblade Chronicles (the first one), SaGa Scarlet Grace, and Cross Code (pretty much in that order). I'll likely focus on Xenoblade for a while, but I'm hoping to keep all three moving enough that i don't forget where I was
@Fizza I did not watch it live (so I already knew it was coming) but I would have completely lost it when the opening vocals began singing the main theme
I'm a bit scattered... For some reason I decided to do simultaneous Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 playthroughs, and I also picked up Cross Code on sale and I'm playing that on the side. But then a friend convinced me to finally give Xenoblade Chronicles a try and so I'll likely be setting all of the other ones aside when that arrives
If this happens I might pick it up. I have both releases on GameCube, but I haven't been able to finish wind waker (I lose steam around the korok dungeon)
I'm kinda between things right now. I finished Live A Live a week or so ago and now I'm waiting for the next thing to grab my interest. It will probably be Digimon Survive or going back to play another route on Triangle Strategy. I tried out the demo of Anno: Mutationem and I love the art style, so I'll be looking for a sale on that one. While waiting for inspiration to strike I've been playing through Pokemon Black 2, and I think I'm finally going to finish it this time
My first experience with Metroid was Super Smash Brothers... But then last summer I bought into the Metroid Dread hype big time, so to prepare I played through all 4 2D Metroid games in order and finished just in time to play Dread when it released. And that's how I learned that I like Metroidvanias 🙂
I'm excited for this demo. I was a bit cold to the "real time tactical" idea, but i just played through 13 Sentinels, and the tactical portions seem to have some similarity (not quite RTS, not quite turn based), and i enjoyed that. I'll have to see if i find this as engaging
I loved this game. I was really frustrated at times, but it hit the mark so well with exploration and lore that I kept coming back to it (even after trying to move on several times).
That and I brought it on a three hour flight where I had nothing to do but grind the Sentinel Hornet fight 😊
I am on the last chapter of my first route of Triangle Strategy. I'm definitely going to play all the routes, but I've got my eye on both 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim and Live A Live next... Not sure which one is going to win out
I played Hollow Knight last month, beat the first final boss right before it was announced as the next backlog club, and then tried to move on but kept he sucked back in and now I've beaten the second final boss and the first pantheon. I will probably not be finishing the pantheons, but it is incredibly enjoyable.
I'm not much for boss fights, but I played this on a plane with nothing else to do, and that's probably the only reason I didn't give up on it
Despite attempting to move on, I got sucked back into Hollow Knight... But Triangle Strategy has its hooks in me as well, so I'm splitting my time between the two
I literally finished the final boss yesterday (not the actual final boss, just the first one). The music is what got me into it, the exploration and world kept me going. If I weren't so bad at the boss fights I'd probably keep going, but as it stands I'm happy to put a bow on it now that I've seen the credits.
(And also Triangle Strategy is calling my name again 😊)
Went with the western one, probably mostly for nostalgia. I think the Japanese cover is a better design, but as a kid who played the heck out of the N64 version, that western box art perfectly matched the hype I felt for this game
I might have nostalgia to blame since i played the early Pokemon games a ton as a kid, but i often find the early grind to be compelling. Every battle, tedious as it might be, leaves you a little bit stronger, a little bit closer to that next level up and those precious stat boosts, and better able to handle the next challenge. I played Beginnings followed immediately by Earthbound several months ago (finally lost steam a few hours into mother 3) and i loved them. Beginnings was grind heavy at a few points, but i don't remember the same being true for Earthbound, but maybe i was just used to the combat by then. I'm glad you all played it, even if you ended up being lukewarm about it by the end. In the context of when it came out, it was a masterpiece, but i feel like it's a good thing that later games have taken that foundation and built something even better with it
I'm continuing to resist the urge to finally play Fire Emblem Awakening until after I finish Astria Ascending, but progress is slow (mostly because I'm busy). I also played through The Starship Damrey as an interesting little filler and tried out Liberation Maiden as well
I spent most of my gaming this weekend with the 3DS. I told myself I wasn't going to, but I ended up playing Fire Emblem Awakening and Echos just long enough to be able to access the DLC maps. I'm now fighting back the urge to play both of those until after I finish Astria Ascending, which I am enjoying way more than I thought I would
The blue background does it for me. Not because I specifically like blue backgrounds or anything, I just think the red clashes with the pink of Kirby's body a little too much (maybe it was supposed to be a pink background and my phone just makes it look red? Mute that background a lot and i think Japan wins it)
I love getting a month of articles about discovering Earthbound. I'm not joining in this time around, mostly because I beat it for the first time just a few months ago, but the thought of lots of people playing this game together makes me happy
Been bouncing around a bit lately, but i recently decided to give Astria Ascending a second try (this time on the OLED) and I'm enjoying it much more than I did last time around (the menu text being in focus and readable makes a big difference)
For me the Japanese box art perfectly captures the feel of the game. It's consistent with a world where Giygas is a serious threat, but nobody bats an eye at a time traveling super bee or the cult that just paints everything blue or the fact that Mr. Saturn exists at all. It was weird, zany, and funny, but also cool, bold, and adventurous. The NA box art shows you some elements of the game, but the Japanese box art sets the stage for what the game actually is
I've been playing Legend of Zelda (with heavy use of a map...) and I'm hoping to finish that this weekend. I also finally started Shadowrun Returns and am quite interested in the story so far
I'm trying to get over my reservations about the generic title of Triangle Strategy and really dive in, and the visual style is certainly making it easier Nostalgia also got to me and I played a bit of Skyroads and Chip's Challenge (level 132, slowly making my way to the end! Never beat it as a kid)
I have a hard time continuing to play a game once I've seen the end credits roll, but there are many exceptions, usually if there is some kind of post game story to be discovered. When I played breath of the wild i purposefully avoided the main quests for a long time because I knew that would be the end for me (and sure enough I moved on shortly after beating Ganon)
I picked up Triangle Strategy day one and immediately started it up to watch the intro and listen to the music. And then I showed herculean restraint by not playing it until I finished the route I was on in Mercenaries Saga Chronicles (which I did last night 😁 )
But yeah, I'm going to be stuck on this one for a while
I'm still playing a bit of Pokemon Legends (through the main campaign plus a few of the big post game quests, trying to decide how dedicated i am to finishing the Pokedex) and playing Mercenaries Saga on the side while I wait for Triangle Strategy
I played through Beginnings followed by Earthbound for the first time last year. Mechanically they felt very similar, with Earthbound improving on almost every aspect of the initial. Personally I loved them both (but I'm a pretty big fan of old school RPGs), you should definitely think of them as the NES and SNES versions of the same game.
I am loving Legends, but it isn't the same as what I enjoyed about the mainline series. In my perfect world, Legends would become a new series and the mainline games would return to 2D sprites and focus on evolving what made the early games so successful, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority there
Still Pokemon Legends! ... And may be for a while as my wife and I slowly work through it together. I picked up Mercenaries Saga Chronicles as some short filler on the side while I wait for Triangle Strategy
I am so very excited for this game. I remember watching it's announcement and thinking "I'm glad that's just the working title cuz it sounds ridiculous" and then slapped my forehead when they decided to stick with it. I never had a problem with Octopath Traveler, but I learned of it long after release and never thought to question it. Also, I beat the final final boss yesterday and only just now learned that if you take the first letters of the eight characters' names you can spell OCTOPATH - which is a nice touch. Though I'm now noticing that "Triangle" also has eight letters...
The first handheld game I ever owned was Pokemon Silver (though I'd been playing red and blue on friends' Gameboys for a couple years by then). Nostalgia is probably at least partly to blame here, but I kinda think Pokemon peaked in gen 2 (plus I never owned later gens as a kid) As an adult, my wife convinced me to try gen 3 (which is where she stopped), and from there we started hunting down copies of most main line games, catching up just in time to play sword and shield at launch (though we did skip ultra sun and moon since I didn't really like gen 7)
So having played through most of the franchise as an adult, I would have to agree that the format is a little tired. Personally, I feel that the issue is that Pokemon moved to 3D with gen 6 without adapting much at all beyond just making the sprites 3D (and many of the older gen sprites were gorgeous). The gen 8 DLC was the first step towards embracing a 3D world, and it's looking like Legends is another step.
So while I do think the format is tired, I'm going to keep playing the new ones as they come out (at least for now 🙂)
Finally finished the last route of Fire Emblem Three Houses, and it's been a ride. I'm keeping up the trend of finishing old games and I've gone back into Octopath Traveler, working on finishing the third of the 8 routes
Thanks for defending a "bad" game. I really liked the weird parts of this game (like the full song and dance numbers after the boss battles). I tried the demo and ended up not buying, but it was probably more due to the public opinion than my actual experience.
One of the things that didn't click was that I expected to get a 3D platformer, with the full range of motion that I usually find with those, but instead my motion was limited by which costumes I had on (including some fairly basic actions like attacking or jumping). Thinking of it as a series of puzzles that happened to be in a 3D world probably would have made it more enjoyable for me, and with that mindset I'd likely be willing to give it another shot someday (but I have a long backlog to get through before then 🙂 )
