Re: Video: The Best RPG Ever Made Still Isn't On Switch

LudicrousBeeswax

Missed this when it came out (along with the entire SNES library... My mom was pretty anti video game for a while). I've been playing some of the greats from the SNES (and other consoles that I missed) over the last couple of years. It's kinda hard for me to go into a game knowing it's supposed to be really really good because that messes with my expectations and sometimes diminishes the experience. For example, I played Final Fantasy VI before I knew it was good, and it totally blew me away, but I felt that Final Fantasy VII was just ok (but I remember playing that one at friends' houses and I can appreciate how it helped make RPGs mainstream in the west)
I played Chrono Trigger because it was at the top of soooo many lists of "Best RPGs Ever" and I had to try really hard to keep my expectations in check. Even with the hype though, it was really good and I'd be happy for a remaster or even just a straight port. I might pick it up, but I'm way more likely to be excited about the FFVI pixel remaster if it ever comes to switch.
Either way, Chrono Trigger is a great game and it's definitely well worth the time for any RPG fan (pun intended )

Re: Soapbox: PokΓ©mon Journeys Is Like The Original Series, But 151 Times Better

LudicrousBeeswax

I remember waking up early on Saturday mornings to catch the latest Pokemon episode. I fell away just after the first Johto season started, but a few years back I stumbled onto the Sinnoh seasons and was surprised at how well done it was. I rewatched the Kanto and Orange Island seasons after that, and my nostalgia got me through it (until partway through Johto again)

I'll definitely keep an eye out for Journeys, as it sounds a lot like what I enjoyed about the Sinnoh seasons

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 4th)

LudicrousBeeswax

Finished Ori and the Blind Forest this weekend and intended to go back to the Final Fantasy pixel remake, but instead I fell hard into Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark and it's been great
I'm also slowly working through Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, but that takes longer because my wife and I are doing side by side playthroughs (she has Shining Pearl), so we only play when we both have time

Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?

LudicrousBeeswax

Looking at this list and realizing that I haven't played as much Zelda as I thought I had...
Lots of great games here. Of the ones I've played I'd have to pick wind waker (though I could see myself picking the NES entries - not because I think they're bad, but because they were the baseline that the rest of the series grew from). I was originally really disappointed by the cartoony look of wind waker, but it didn't stop me from playing it. It wasn't bad at all, and I actually quite enjoyed both of my attempts to finish it, I just ended up losing interest around the korok dungeon both times. I did love stealing weapons and hurling them at things

Re: Community: What Was Your First Ever Nintendo Game?

LudicrousBeeswax

I played Super Mario Bros. At friends' houses. My mom was super anti video game when I was little, so I figured I'd never get too far into them. And then one year she had an abrupt change of heart and we found an N64 under the Christmas tree. I was totally blown away by Super Mario 64 and developed nostalgia-rimmed glasses so bad that I still cannot find a single flaw with that game (not even the camera controls πŸ˜‰)

Re: Feature: Our Most Treasured Zelda Memories

This is the story of how I beat Breath of the Wild:

It was 2019. I had been playing the game on and off since close to launch, and had no intention of finishing any time soon. One Saturday morning, my then 5 year old daughter was watching me play (which was not unusual - she really liked Zelda). She made suggestions from time to time about what I should do (climb that mountain, swim across that lake, go over there I want to see that thing, and other stuff like that). Due to the open nature of the game, I was usually able to do whatever she wanted. That morning the following conversation took place:

5yo: Daddy, are there any princesses in this game?
Me: Why yes, there is a princess
5yo: Can I see her?
Me: ...no
5yo: Why not? Where is she?
Me: She's at the castle
5yo: Daddy I want you to go to the castle
Me: I don't want to go to the castle. It's scary there
5yo: I want you to go to the castle
Me: I don't want to go to the castle
5yo: Daddy, will you please go to the castle?
Me: ...fine

An hour and a half later she got to see her princess πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Re: Octopath Traveler Teases Sequel On Its Third Anniversary

LudicrousBeeswax

I loved Octopath! Though I've only completed two of the paths so far... but I fully intend to finish the rest someday! I played a few chapters at a time in-between longer games, and that worked pretty well
Assuming this is actually a new game (and not just referencing the other HD-2D games we already know are coming) I will have to try really hard not to board the hype train

Re: Chip's Challenge Is Making Its Console Debut On SNES And SEGA Genesis

LudicrousBeeswax

Haha, this is awesome! I definitely spent a lot of time on this game back on Windows 95

It was just released on Steam not too long ago (along with the previously unreleased sequel and a level builder). My understanding was that the original developer finally got the rights back, but still had to rebuild from the ground up (could be mistaken though)
It let you play with the original graphics or Windows graphics, but not everything was exactly the same for the latter (though "bummer" was still present and spot on 😁)

Re: Talking Point: Everyone Has A Bad Game They Love, So What's Yours?

LudicrousBeeswax

Final Fantasy XIII... Wasn't so much bad as it was "not what people expected" (and obviously I would argue that it's mostly just misunderstood πŸ˜…). Though to be completely fair, many of the character interactions were quite painful and the story makes very little sense without reading a lot of external mythology that can't be found in game...
I don't even have nostalgia to blame as I played it through for the first time last year

Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Dread Be The Franchise's 'Awakening'?

LudicrousBeeswax

Interesting to note the comparatively low sales numbers for Metroid as a franchise (though still pretty successful by most standards). I had always thought of Metroid as one of Nintendo's main IPs, likely due to Samus's inclusion in the original smash brothers.

Either way, I'd never played any Metroid games before and the Dread trailer convinced me to dust off the old NES mini and give it a shot. I'm enjoying it so far πŸ™‚
