The Collector's Edition is a Square Enix store exclusive.
Nintendo has officially announced Octopath Traveler 2, a brand new follow-up to Square Enix's 2018 hit retro-style RPG. The original Octopath Traveler marked the debut of HD-2D, which has since been used in Triangle Strategy and Live A Live and now the game that started it all is coming back with a fresh new adventure. Check out the debut trailer from today's Nintendo Direct above!
The game accidentally leaked just before the Direct over on Green Man Gaming (thanks @Wario64!), but this is still an extremely pleasant surprise. And, following in the footsteps of the Bravely series' confusing numbering, Octopath Traveler 2 is actually the third Octopath game, following the release of the mobile game Champions of the Continent in the West earlier this year.
Path actions for each of the new eight characters will change depending on the time of day, with all base jobs reminiscent of the game's initial eight.
We were big fans of the original game, calling it a "special RPG" in our 9/10 review. Let's hope we can give that same praise to the sequel when it launches in 2023.

I cannot believe how gorgeous this looks. It's breathtaking.
I did not expect to see this today. But god damn am I excited!
Even been enjoying the mobile game.
Really do hope SE keeps it up with these 3D/2-D games. They always look amazing, and all have been great imo.
Fire Emblem in January, Octopath Traveler in February
2023 starts good
So many good titles!
I was thinking about Dunkey when they announced this. Seeing his reaction will be hilarious.
Whelp, there goes another 70+ hours of my life…
As much as I enjoyed the first title, it did get somewhat repetitive toward the end of the game, so hopefully they add more diversity to quests and town visit activities in this new one.
I love that we got this, just disappointed that we still had not seen more of Dragon Quest III HD remake.
Looks fantastic. Although I like the visual improvements of Live-A-Live, it's abundantly clear how much better HD2D is when an entire game is built around it from the ground up.
I'm curious about the mythology but either way DAY 1!
Absolutely loved the first one. So excited for this!
Nice more HD2D
I'm really looking forward to this one, as I enjoyed the first one a lot.
Still, I'm really wondering why they choose almost exactly the same classes as in the first one. I was hoping for something new...
This looks fun. From the trailer, it seems like they improved upon the original where it counts. They were showing off voice acting and more character interactions so, I’m hyped!
I FINALLY HAVE A REASON TO BEAT THE FIRST ONE OH MY GOD!
I cannot begin to tell you loud I screamed when I recognised the music, absolutely cannot wait!
This looks really good. Need to play the original.
Now would be a good time to put the first one on sale.
Probably going to buy this on PS5.
Huh. Guess the first game must've sold really, really well. Ah well. Here's hoping they manage to integrate the 8 stories better this time around.
(Also, where's that HD-2D Dragon Quest III?)
My favorite game of all time is getting a sequel... i'm speechless
I loved Octopath Traveler, so.. I am absolutely getting this day 1.
If the party actually acknowledges each other's existence I will pick this up. That was my only real issue with the original and why I didn't finish it. Everything else about it was awesome.
Highlight of the Direct for me! I loveddd Octopath and adore the HD-2D style... however I'm much more of a JRPG person than SRPG or RTS so Triangle Strategy wasn't for me. Glad this is coming! Let's hope the more intertwining story makes this one even better. Also it'd be nice to get some new varied classes, seems like so far their using mostly the exact same ones.
... Wun can only hope.
Never did finish the original due to the ridiculous boss difficulty in the 4th chapters but I still enjoyed all 60 hours I put into it and this one looks just as awesome.
day one for me!
can't wait to play Hexadecapath traveler!
@AndrasLOHF
The balance in the 4th chapters was odd since i dont think it scaled like with the chapter 1's
so the first of the chapter bosses you fight will end up being the hardest and when you get to the 8th one chances are you will be able to kill it in 1 or 2 turns.
I am overjoyed this game gets a chance to evolve and find itself as a series.
Meh, I would get it if later on everyone says that the other party members actually have more interactions and is involved with other's story more.
I dropped the first one because I found myself skipping story saying "ill play new game plus if they have it" then I got no motivation to even grind in the first place.
Tho still reached 100 hours playing.
Should I feel bad that I am mostly overly hyped for the soundtrack? I love Octopath 1's OST.
Another one for the backlog I think. Haven't even finished the first one.
Probably today's most exciting announcement for me. Triangle Strategy and Live A Live weren't doing it for me, so I'm glad we're getting a proper sequel.
The multiplatform release does make me hope that it ends up well optimized on switch at least rather than targeting more powerful hardware, since there seems to be a lot of flashy lighting effects during the night segments.
@Korgon if you look at the 1:30 mark in the above trailer the VO mentions about paths intertwining, so maybe there’s a chance.
@Remerkin
I did notice that. I hope so I really wanted to like the original more than I did.
as long as the sequel has done away with the pointless grind of the original
Towns and environment design look breathtaking in this installment! You can tell Square Enix has learned so much from the past few years developing with HD2D. Very excited about this game! The music sounds incredible as well. Very exciting, and I was not expecting this at all!
Does Squeenix's store charge at purchase time or when the item ships?
Yes but will their paths actually intertwine? The lack of interconnectivity was a huge disappointment for me with the first game.
The graphics are just amazing! Excited to see what the new one brings.
Good to see more of this promising art style, that I hope will be expanded to other franchises sometime.
Holy crap, I can honestly say, I never expected Octopath Traveler 2 to be announced. I liked the first game well enough, I'll definitely be picking this one up.
I found no real faults with the first game. I absolutely loved it and played over 200 hours of it. This would be so much better if it has some specific improvements over the original.
Stories and characters connected more meaningfully.
More exploration and less linearity.
Quests with more challenge and problem solving.
@MrHonest I will pick it up on ps5 as well. I'm sure it will look great on switch, and I'd rather own it on cartridge, but I just need to see that full HD-2D goodness in 4k.
I wanted to like the first game, and I didn't dislike it per se....But it became pretty repetitive for me quickly. I only played a few hours before realizing that I'd be dealing with the exact same loop for the next 80+ hours. Couple in how disjointed the story arcs felt when acknowledging the other characters, and it just couldn't hold my attention.
I didn't mind the first one, but I don't think I can do another HD-2D (or whatever you call this style) game. 😔
@Fizza I did not watch it live (so I already knew it was coming) but I would have completely lost it when the opening vocals began singing the main theme
