Re: Telltale Admits Its Game Engine Has Let Fans Down In Recent Years

Lroy

@Almighty-Koz Thank you for informing me that a patch has fixed the issue mentioned by others here. I prefer physical over digital if I have the choice, especially as the game seems to be at least £10 cheaper on cart.

@Tourer145 Sounds as though it may have been fixed. Might be worth updating the game and trying again sometime?

Re: Telltale Admits Its Game Engine Has Let Fans Down In Recent Years

Lroy

@Almighty-Koz @tourer145 Rather disconcerting to hear these issues with the Switch release of BATMAN - S1. Can I ask if either of you had the cart version

I am pondering picking this up physical after I previously bought the game Day 1 on Steam but had nothing but issues with how the game ran on my Laptop and gave up.

The last thing I want to do is throw more money at this game on another platform, years later, only to encounter yet more issues.

Re: Guide: The Best Video Game Books Money Can Buy

Lroy

Building up my own Hardcore Gaming 101 physical book collection. They feel almost 'home-made' rather than professional polish in terms of production quality, not a criticism. Gives them a 'for the fans by the fans' spirit. I've thoroughly enjoyed each one I have read so far and learnt so much. Really pleased to see these tomes get a shout-out.

I'd also recommend the various 'bookazine' specials that Retro Gamer magazine have put out. Alas, some are digital exclusives. Again, building up as many of the physical issues as I can.

Re: The Next Johnny Turbo Game Is Shoot Out, Arrives At The Beginning Of August

Lroy

Still waiting for the last 5 or so games released by Flying Tiger on the North American eShop to come to Europe, specifically the U.K. Starting to wonder if they will ever come. Shame as I really, really like and enjoy Data East games. They are like loud and often laughable comfort genre movies from the 80s.
I'd love NIGHT SLASHERS on Switch.

Re: Hamster's Neo Geo Hot Streak On The Switch eShop Continues With Six New Confirmed Games

Lroy

Huzzah! Put me down as another for PREHISTORIC ISLE 2. Looking forward to the SNK ARCADE COLLECTION coming later this year as that has PREHISTORIC ISLE 1.

I'll also grab METAL SLUG 4 to keep my Switch Slug collection going. CROSSED SWORDS is an interesting one in that it's a bit different to other titles on the Neo Geo. So likely pick that one up too.

Keep 'em coming Hamster.

I'd like to see PUZZLE BOBBLE 1 & 2, BATTLE FLIP SHOT, SUPER SIDEKICKS 4, TWINKLE STAR SPRITES, NIGHTMARE IN THE DARK, CYBER LIP, BASEBALL STARS 2 and WINDJAMMERS next. Oh and IRONCLAD too. Although I think that last one was a Neo Geo CD exclusive?

Re: Video: Sonic Mania Plus Team Explain Reasoning Behind Physical Release

Lroy

So this game now has two physical retail releases? One was the initial game SONIC MANIA and now another physical edition for SONIC MANIA PLUS?

Feel sorry for the wallets of those that have to double-dip let alone those that also picked up the digital version first. A triple-dip. Wish it was a more simple world where you just bought something once and it was the definitive, finished version. What? I can dream can't I? ☺️

Re: Review: Super Destronaut DX (Switch eShop)

Lroy

@OorWullie I bought it and for £4 for a SPACE INVADERS clone am more than happy. Plays fine and the only significant addition I'd really appreciate would be a way to filter the high-score leaderboard by your friends list. As it stands, the Leaderboard only goes to 50 and to my knowledge there's no way to see your friends scores unless they are in the Top 50.

Re: Review: Johnny Turbo's Arcade: Express Raider (Switch eShop)

Lroy

@Atariboy You're absolutely right. IGN has a long history of 'bad form' in this regard. It has been pointed out by the likes of Hardcoregaming101 in their arcade developer dedicated books that IGN once dismissed Taito's arcade compilation discs for the PS2 on little more grounds than 'these games are old and I've never heard of them which must make them bad'. Ignorant and pathetic.

The current NVC IGN crew were even worse in their disdain for games like BAD DUDES... Seems youth and being photogenic to allure 'hits and clicks' are more qualification for the games journalism industry than actually having experience of all eras of gaming. Arcade gaming and its legacy is arguably the most important aspect of the history of the medium but is so often just ignored or dismissed by people who simply haven't the intelligence to comment.

NLife itself isn't immune from this mentality either with many genuine classics being awarded '6/10' status 😢

Re: Review: Johnny Turbo's Arcade: Express Raider (Switch eShop)

Lroy

@NiaBladerunner You can select 4:3 aspect ratio but this option has a smoothing filter built-in. I believe the term used in the review is 'bilinear filtering'. Now I personally don't mind this. I think it makes the pixels look less sharp and ugly on big LCD TVs. However, I appreciate giving the user the option to determine how much of any bilinear filtering is present would be preferable.

For example, the Hamster Arcade Archive Releases and the Neo-Geo titles allow the user to decide how strong any filtering or scan lines are. Or if you prefer, you can just have the raw, unfiltered image on those releases.

Re: Review: Johnny Turbo's Arcade: Express Raider (Switch eShop)

Lroy

Please, please, please get your act together Flying Tiger and bring these games to the European eShops. I'm in the UK and so far we have only had DARK SEAL aka GATE OF DOOM, BAD DUDES vs. DRAGON NINJA and SLY SPY. Please bring over the other game releases on the US eShop like SUPER BURGER TIME, CAVEMAN NINJA, DARK SEAL II etc.

Despite supposedly professional and informed games industry types like IGN regularly selecting these releases as their 'Skip of the Week' on their NVC podcast, I'm thrilled to see Data East's arcade library come to the Switch. I think the aspect ratio and screen filters these games come with are actually pretty decent. You can play them in the correct 4:3 aspect ratio and whilst they lack a pixel perfect style option, they do allow for an image which to my eyes at least, feels like an actual arcade cab image.

I'm actually curious how many fans of retro games like these actually do prefer pixel perfect image quality? For games like these and games on 8-bit and 16-bit consoles from the past, I vastly prefer a CRT and scanline filter. To me razor sharp pixels look really ugly on a huge HD TV.

Anyway, as I stated above, folks like IGN only illustrate their inexperience or lack of appreciation for the Arcade era when they pour over zealous scorn on these Data East titles. It is a trend I have noticed repeatedly on that site over the years. We may be a small minority but for those of us who grew up in the arcades, these releases of Data East, Psikyo, Neo-Geo, Taito, Technos, Irem, Nintendo arcade titles are a massive cause for celebration. These games may be old but they deserve so much more respect from the industry. If you haven't played these games or don't have any meaningful insight into their legacy, just keep your mouth shut rather than try to make disparaging remarks about an old game you know nothing about.

Sorry for the rant there, not sure where that came from ☺️

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

Lroy

This might be unrelated but Nintendo have definitely already revised the build quality of the Switch. I have a launch model and another Switch bought earlier this year. The material used and the actual girth of the two when compared are slightly different. The second newer Switch is slightly thicker and has more 'plastic material' in its body for want of a better term. The 'plastic' on this newer Switch also has a different finish. It is a duller looking black. Anyway, I would be curious to see if the cracking issue is limited to the launch models and that Nintendo are, secretly so to speak, aware of these hitherto unforeseen design flaws.

Re: SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Will Hit Your Switch In Time For Christmas

Lroy

@Moroboshi876 @Damo I pre-ordered this from the publisher's European site as soon as it was announced. The release date for this collection has varied based on what retail website you visit ever since. It has been listed as November, December, August and most recently September. Perhaps they were all just guessing?

Glad to finally get a set date, albeit if I personally would have preferred August/September.

Likely just make it an early Xmas gift for myself now.

Re: Review: Fortnite (Switch eShop)

Lroy

@RETRO_J If you ever fancy playing together let me know. We also have plans for a regular FORTNITE games night over on the Adult Switch Gamers thread on NL Forum. Plus, we have a Discord server set-up which we are just starting to all join up to and chat. We've got World Cup score prediction games going on and World Fantasy Football leagues, so the Discord is a great hangout not just for the specific Game Nights.

Hopefully, see you over there.

Re: Play Online With Your Friends In The Switch Version Of FIFA 19

Lroy

I'm relieved and excited that FIFA '19 will come to Switch with the ability to play friends online. However, the description sounds like the barest of bones. Play online friendlies? Why can't we have online Friends Only, League and Cup tournaments?

I'd love to get 8 or more folks of my Friends list and play a knockout Cup or hell, an ongoing season where we can play matches over a longer period of time.

The way FIFA '19 Online with Friends is being described we will have to go back to those old days where you arrange a 'friendly' and record the score on pen and paper (or on the FIFA '19 forum thread) and basically record the results game by game ourselves in order to make it like a league table or cup competition.

Re: Don't Forget, Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 Will Kick Off At 5pm BST On 12th June

Lroy

Getting excited for this! Really hope we see some more of FIRE EMBLEM, that STAR FOX GRAND PRIX, if true, is a spiritual successor to Rare's DIDDY KONG RACING and most important of all... loads of unknown suprise game announcements.

Oh and a complete overhaul of My Nintendo promised and much, much more 'Virtual Console' type game value added to the impending paid Online service. Yeah, those last two are really out there I know ☺️

Re: Review: Pokémon Quest (Switch eShop)

Lroy

@PhilKenSebben Yeah, we do to (each have our own system). Is there any way to connect the two and play together? Or are you just both playing your own solo-games, next to one another, lol! If that makes sense.
