Being able to place the Switch in a vertical position is very handy considering how many shoot 'em up games continue to get released on the Nintendo eShop on a regular basis. According to a PR from Ratalaika Games, the next one due out sometime in September is FullBlast by UFO Crash Games. If the name sounds familiar, it's because it was published by EnjoyUp Games on the Wii U eShop back in 2015, and before then was available on Android and iOS.
FullBlast is a retro-style vertical shooter which promises to delight anyone who grew up playing the genre. Its visuals are inspired by games from the '80s and '90s, but take full advantage of current technology. Interestingly, the developer prefers not to class it as a bullet hell game, but rather a fast-paced title similar to more classic releases. Much like all good shmups, your job is to save humanity from an alien threat.
Here's a brief description of the game:
FullBlast features a story campaign of 12 random levels and, as usual in every game of this genre, mankind is at the verge of extinction due to an alien invasion and you're the last hope to save the world. With no other choice but to take the control of your powerful fighter and upgrade your weapons to kill thousands of alien ships and creatures, humanity’s retaliation against the alien invaders, starts now!
FullBlast will also include a two-player local co-op mode, power-ups and power-downs, four mini and four mega bosses, a heavy metal soundtrack and a mission system and leaderboards. There will be Pro Controller support as well.
Take a look at the trailer above and tell us if you're ready for the arrival of another shmup on the Switch next month.

switch is becoming flooded with shmups which is great cause they quality titles n Iove the genre
I'm not convinced by this one.
The artstyle doesn't speak to me at all.
@Cobalt the gameplay looks pretty solid
@paihia
I would say classic more than solid but my problem is more about the aspect of the game. Maybe because I play too much 90's arcade 2D shoot'em ups, dunno...
Roguelike shooter? Am I reading this correctly?
I know this is not a Steam-based community, but for those interested, it's only $1 on Steam right now. I couldn't help but grab it
https://store.steampowered.com/app/429220/FullBlast/
Edit: Initial impressions...
Not too bad, but the game needs to drop weapon upgrades a bit more often, and improve on their variety. Most weapons felt very samey (from one shot, to two shots, to three shots, etc).
Also, you don't get bonus points after winning a boss battle, so the player feels largely unrewarded for such effort.
All in all, it's not bad for the price (lackluster features for a lackluster price).
I am looking forward to ROAD REDEMPTION instead. It looks like a great game.
@frogopus
I would second Serenden as a great shooter that amazingly works as a rogue-lite. I am usually shy of randomly generated games, but Serenden and Dead Cells are very impressive.
@diablo2 Is it as Xevious as it looks? All I see is Xevious HD.
May pick it up for a $1 for my kid, he's big into violence, he's been playing Terraria boss mods all summer long. Silly me, I always thought of Terria as a Minecraft clone but all he does is play SHMUP style.
Honestly, NL really needs to check their priorities if they think this meh-looking Steam/Wii U port is worthy of an article, yet Sisters Royale, which is a new exclusive shmup from the creators of Castle of Shikigami is not.
I'm als confused how pretty much ANYTHING gets a review, yet the really good exclusive retro shmup Quad Fighter K (Kyogeki Quartet Fighters in Japan) does not.
@rjejr Definitely not bad for its price, but it just feels very lackluster:
The music never changes
Weapon upgrades are hardly exciting
You don't get bonus points after defeating a boss, so the player feels very unrewarded
So the overall feeling here is "generic game." Hopefully the developer will improve upon these things.
Any chance I could just buy the soundtrack instead of the game? Seriously, the game looks pretty boring for a retro shmup, but I liked the music in the trailer...
EDIT: Oh, that's the only song....nvm...
At first I thought this was a Starcraft clone for the Switch lol
This looks really good how did I miss this on Wii U?
Yay! A port or a three year old game that, according to metacritic, nobody even bothered to review! And it's not even on IOS anymore. Woo!
@Cobalt psikyo collection is upcoming for some classic shmup action (I cant wait!)
@paihia
This is a great news because the four games in the collection are outstanding.
Personally I'm not gonna buy it because I prefer to play directly on my arcade cabinet(CRT and arcade sticks are kings for these games) but I'm really happy for the people who never played those four awesome shoot'em ups.
classic arcade-shooter fans should check out Cycle 28.
@Cobalt your right crt sticks are the 'kings' for arcade but damn it I cant afford a cabinet
@paihia
I said exactly the same as you 15 years ago...
Dunno if you'd be interested to have a little tip on "how to get an arcade cabinet even if you think that you can't afford it" ? This is the way I did it :
_1st : I put a fixed sum of money aside every month (50€) during a year.
_2nd : I bought my arcade cabinet (600€)
Easy and simple, isn't it ?
I have this game on Wii U & I like it. I will be getting it on Switch.
Pass
@Cobalt not so simple when your married with kids;)
@paihia
I'm married with kid too...
@diablo2 Thanks, maybe I'll save my kid the buck on Steam and just ignore it on Switch like I did on Wii U. I still have my Atari 7800 ready to go and an original Xevious cart if I need a fix. It's not hooked up, but it's ready if need be.
@rjejr Lol i miss Xevious.
But i mean, i would probably get it for him if i were you, considering he's a little kid (hence, he's more easily amused). Plus it's only $1.
Mileage may vary; the action and the shooting is still very much there
Huh placing the tablet in an alternate orientation is a thing?
Does the display rotate (no) ... I am missing something here.
@Cobalt May I ask where you bought your Arcade cabinet from? Been seriously thinking about getting one for about two years. Only day dreamed about possibiiity of owning one prior to that. I'm still unsure the best way to go about it.
@Lroy
I bought it from a dude in France who has constant flows of new arcade cabinets, games, spare parts, CRTs etc...
It's not a store or something like that but this guy has like 40 arcades in his huge garage an zilion PCB...
Game is meh indeed, reviewed it back on the Wii U and come off really unimpressed. Bear in mind though, this is a smart device game originally.
@EmirParkreiner Sometimes it's just a matter of devs of meh games sending in review copies of their game while devs of much more interesting games don't because they expect reviewers to buy the games AND review them for free. Sometimes it's just a matter of a reviewing team being short on fans of one dedicated genre, in this case shmups.
@diablo2 Thanks for the info.
So I splurged the $1 on Steam - sorry Switch but I'm guessing $9.99 on there. Turned out my kid had $4 in our account so I owe him a $1. Wadayagunnado.
Funny story. I played the fist level on 2 player Easy by myself. Didn't go too well as my secondary ship got destroyed pretty quick. So I decided to play again with only 1 controller this time. Game is much easier w/ only 1 player, guess they programmed it to take number of players into account. Means I should be able to play on normal w/ my kid, this is his thing, I'll just follow him.
@rjejr Yeah, def. You'll eventually notice the game is on the generic side (especially by the non-varying music).
But in the end, it's still a fun experience for what it is. I tend to enjoy Shmups of all shapes and sizes. My obsession started after finding a few on NES and SNES, as well as an old helicopter game on Atari.
Now let's hope the Switch version feels a tad more robust, but it's mostly okay-ish for what it is.
@diablo2 Considering how simplistic it is it's great for 2 player w/ 2 joycon on Switch, portable on TV for short bursts w/ a friend. And $5.99 is cheap these days. But I prefer $1.01. Maybe if Ntinedo ever gets it's rewards program to work with it's console we'll get it on Switch someday for 50 gold coins.
Utter garbage.
@Cobalt Oh cool. Does he have a website I can visit or anything?
@Lroy
He doesn't have a website but you can find him here :
https://www.leboncoin.fr/collection/1452707562.htm/
If you want to send a message to him, you just have to click on the top right blue button. His name is Gilles.
I can't confirm to you that he speaks english but I suppose he does.
Hope it helps.
@Cobalt Ok thanks buddy.
