Great game, but very much an appetizer. Rebirth is of course also just the middle chapter, but it´s much bigger and more satisfying than Remake.
I know, Remake is a 30 hour game so you are getting value for your money - but when I played it in 2020 I was left pretty annoyed that I had to wait a long time for the next chapter. With Rebirth, there was so much in it that I didn´t mind that Part 3 is still years away. So hopefully Rebirth will arrive very soon on Switch 2 as well.
And I also have to wonder, just how well is Rebirth going to work on Switch 2. Seems like it´s gonna be much tougher to port than Remake.
This game/collection is seriously 11/10. It´s incredible how many of the 50 games are so good. What´s most impressive is how original many of the games are, with ideas that I have not seen in other games. They did not only set out to do 50 games that mimic other games from this era, they set out to make 50 original games. And they succeeded.
My favourite right now is probably Overbold. I have spent like 7 hours in that, and not even completed it. Maybe because Im....overbold and try to play too greedy!
Just like the Contra DLC was like a weird starter for the Castlevania DLC im pretty certain this almost confirms a Final Fantasy DLC will be coming.
I love SaGa, and actually especially Emerald Beyond (played that for 100 hours last year…) so this is really sweet. Oh and it’s free #switch2welcometour
Some background - Bergsala, who have the rights for Nintendo products in Scandinavia have been blowing up prices and been very consumer unfriendly for 30 years.
Some examples:
Formed a trade cartel to make sure retailers could not sell/import from other countries in the 90´s, which made swedish prices on SNES/N64 games about 40% more expensive in Sweden than for example UK. They were later sentenced in court for this and had to pay millions in fines.
Have kept Scandinavian countries out of official Nintendo membership programs, by for example opening up and removing bonus points from products and then resealing them.
They stopped selling products to retailers that imported and sold Nintendo products from other countries at one point. Then the Swedish Consumer Agency told them that this was illegal and they had to stop.
They once pursued trying to make selling used Nintendo products in Sweden illegal. Once again, this was not accepted by the Swedish Consumer Agency.
An example of a massive price increase is the SNES Classic Mini which was sold for about 250 euro in Sweden. More than double RRP.
And now they have made 450 euro into approx 650 euro in Sweden with the Switch 2. Sweden have some extra taxes, for example on products with chemical substances, but even including all that Bergsala are trying to earn an extra 100 euro for themselves for every sold Switch 2.
And...80 euro for Mario Kart World is in Sweden of course about 100 euro instead. Jesus christ.
So all in all - everyone in Scandinavia wants to get rid of Bergsala and would like Nintendo Europe to step in instead. Bergsala are massively driving up prices on Nintendo products for all of us here. And as you see from the list above, have tried both scummy and illegal methods to actively make consumer rights much worse. Yes, capitalism bla bla free market bla bla, but why should we not be extremely disappointed by having Bergsala here? They are the worst, I genuinely hope that they one beautiful day lose the Nintendo license and just go bankrupt.
This feels like a pure nostalgia list. Im not saying it´s wrong to think Wario Land 1 is the best game in the series, it´s just surprising that a group of people would rank it as being the actual best game in the series. Have you really recently replayed all games or is this from memory? That´s what I start thinking...
To me, that first game also feels the "least Wario". There are certainly things in that game that started defining his own gameplay style, but I think the second game is where the real Wario gameplay was cemented. And then all games after were quite similar to Wario Land 2. The first game feels more like a "chunky Mario game".
Personally I have a soft spot for Wario Land 3, but I can understand if many people prefer the more pure platformer style of Wario Land 2 or 4. But Wario Land 3 has this open world feeling that I really like, where you are constantly returning to stages to find new areas and secrets. I´ve played through it maybe 5 times but still feel tempted to replay it.
But Wario Land 2 and 4 and Shake Dimension are also incredible games, and in my opinion far better than 1. I have never played VB so I can´t really comment on it.
"You'll get a slanted take here in a comment section full of enthusiasts."
Obviously... I know many people will defend Nintendo whatever they do, that is something that everyone who has used internet since circa 1998 knows.
But I still think it is important to challenge Nintendo, even if people call me and others whiners (who cares). I love their games as much as anyone else here, but I also play on other systems and it is extremely obvious how Nintendo capitalizes on their very, very obsessive user base. And as I have stated many times, from a business perspective I do not blame them. It is actually impressive how they have achieved this, and I bet Sony and Microsoft are more than a little envious.
But I still think even obsessed Nintendo fans deserve reasonably priced games, and I think Nintendo is not treating you good enough with DKCRHD (and other recent examples) - even if you buy the game and are happy. As some others have already mentioned - it creates a ripple effect where we keep seeing overpriced remasters. I do not blame people for not thinking that far, but yeah...
Im not saying anything about that. I agree with you and totally understand that Nintendo is selling this at full price because Switch is a newer system with a large customer base, and that people who haven´t played it before will be okay with paying full price even if it is an old game.
But I am saying that Nintendo is charging 60$ for a simple, lazy remaster. I know that people are willing to buy it , so as I said - as a business decision it is smart. But it is for sure greedy, and the price doesn´t reflect the work put into this game (compared to other 60$, new games).
It´s funny, I know that if for example Sony would try to charge 60$ for the Jak & Daxter remaster (just the first game) people would find that outrageous. But Nintendo has kind of eased their customer base into their expensive price points for old games. So good job Nintendo I guess, but I still find their pricing of DKCRHD offensive. And for sure hope that others will realize this at some point.
@electrolite77
If you think 60$ for a barebones remaster of a 15 year old game is fair, I can just once again congratulate Nintendo.
Nintendo knows people are buying these lazy remasters/remakes even if they overprice them, and that´s the reason they keep being overpriced. It doesn´t matter and unfortunately Nintendo are OK with just milking their customers for money. It makes sense from a business perspective of course, but it will hopefully have an impact of what people thinks of Nintendo in the long term.
But right now people are so starved for new first party Switch games that they can do this, and I don´t think anyone thought this was gonna flop even though it is insanely overpriced.
I love the original and it would be sweet to have a way to play it on Switch. But it´s just hilarious that Nintendo thinks it is fair to ask for full price for this.
This is something that should have been offered very discounted, or be part of a subscription service. It is truly mind blowing how far behind Sony/Microsoft they really are. But I guess it is nice to be able to sell old games for full price. Since people seem to be buying these full priced remasters, I guess it makes sense to Nintendo to just milk their customers for all the money they can.
But no, I will definitely not be buying this. The price tag is just insulting.
It felt like this game was not really sure what it wanted to be.
The really short challenges often felt really boring to me, and I ended up greatly preferring the long challenge for each game (I know a lot of people feel the exact opposite). I personally got quite hooked on the SMB3 challenge for a while.
But then I just felt..."why is there only world 1 to speedrun/master in SMB3? Why does SMB2 not even have a challenge like this?" (that game only have you speedrun the first level). It just feels really random. A mix of super short, often boring challenges and then just one long challenge which is most often just a slice of a game. I have not mastered any game, just the small portion of it that Nintendo (seemingly randomly) chose to include.
My takeaway from this game was that I think Nintendo should release a speedrun mode for each game, they could surely implement that in the Switch NES app. That would be really awesome actually, letting us have a framework helping us learn how to speedrun classic games. I can´t see that taking much work either.
But this game, once I got the best medal on all challenges (which honestly did not take that long) there was nothing to really come back to.
It’s a fantastic, classic JRPG. I will say however that I think later entries in the franchise (V, VIII and XI being my favourites) are far superior, and I was probably expecting them to add a bit more to this remake to make it more in line with these more fleshed out entries.
But yes, I do understand and respect the idea of keeping it very faithful to the original. And it sure is a great game, that I prefer any day to more modern JRPG:s.
A little strange that this review does not mention that almost half the DLC (characters and unlocks) are actually missing from the Switch version for the moment. And it also has some serious bugs. This will hopefully be fixed in a patch that is expected next week or so.
Love this series for doing it’s own thing and being different than most other JRPG:s. No, every game is not a masterpiece and actually, im not sure that any game in this series is a masterpiece. But the games are always interesting, surprising and challenging, which I value a lot more than just ”being a tight, typical JRPG”. Im often really bored by new games in this genre, having played so many JRPG:s through the years. But Im always up for a SaGa.
Frontier and Emerald Beyond are my favourites, but the Romancing SaGa 2 remake is also looking very promising so far.
I hate that we are in this place where we are expected (maybe, "encouraged" is a better word, I know we have a choice) to buy a 7 year old game, again.
It looks better (but I agree, the brightness feels like something you could dislike compared to the more moody original look) but that should not warrant a re-release. I guess Playtonic probably needs some cash to make the real sequel, and that this is what it is all about really. But it´s hard to understand who this is for - if you loved the original, do you really need to buy it again with a little prettier graphics? And if you didn´t, do you really have faith that this suddenly fixes it and makes it a good game now?
That DLC made it obvious that this had to be coming. Why would they make DLC based on another Konami franchise, and not the very obvious one - Castlevania? Probably as some sort of joke/teaser.
Although I must say that in my opinion the Contra DLC is the best one so far. Fun weapons, characters etc.
I was waiting for this and pretty sure it would come eventually, but Im beyond happy about the actual scope of this DLC. Would not have dreamed of literally all mainline characters (and even non-mainline, as it seems), that amount of weapons and so many music tracks.
The only real potential problem is if there might be too many whips in the item pool now...
I agree with there being a little too few free for all minigames. I really wish they would just focus on the core Mario Party mode and stop having 40 or so minigames exclusive to extra modes that you will probably play a handful of times and then be done with it. Some of those minigames, like a few of the rhythm ones at least, could as well just be free for all minigames that was available in the party mode.
But I did notice that the number felt a lot better when accepting motion controls. That adds a few extra minigames, as well as some fun variety when not every minigame is motion control. I am OK with it when it´s like...1 in 7 or something.
I will also say that the new showdown minigames are a lot longer and sometimes actually are like at least 3 minigames in one. You could probably count those 10 minigames as at least 25 different ones, in terms of the variety they bring.
I read the…less than positive reviews of the game before playing it, on release day way back then. So I knew what to (not) expect.
For me Resi 6 has been a game that I always have had an urge to revisit, so I have replayed it to completion (all campaigns) 3 times since 2012. It definitely has problems, but I think the 4 campains and how ambitious it is makes it so damn compelling. It’s incredibly massive in scope and ambition, even today it actually looks kinda good and it’s incredible how much they crammed into this game. Definitely quantity before quality, but somehow 4 ”pretty good campaigns” makes for a nice whole, to me. Whenever I replay it it’s fun to start in another end then I did before, and to see how the story (which is honestly totally bonkers, but in a charming way) is different depending on what you know/don’t know from the other campaigns.
So yeah, I guess I really do like Resi 6. Not all games you like have to be masterpieces without flaws. Resi 6 just feels special, in a weird way.
@Reprise Ah, thanks for the answer. I vaguely remember the different announcements during the years, but have kind of stopped hoping. From at least 97-07 I just wanted LBA3, more than any other game. Then just completely gave up hope.
But seeing this trailer, even if it´s "just the first game" (which to me is far from being as good as the second game, even if it certainly is fine), is kind of surreal. Really hope it turns out great and that it sells well enough to warrant them making the second game and maybe finally that third one as well...
Great game, but the sequel is the real masterpiece. To this day one of my favorite games of all time, and I´ve played through it 10+ times. A bit sad that they didn´t do both of them in one package, I guess compared to most games today they are both a bit on the shorter side so it would sort of make sense.
But I will of course support this game if it means there will be a chance for them to make the sequel too.
It´s really downhill after the first game. Loved the first one on release, was honestly the only fun thing I had to play on Gamecube for quite a while. I was very underwhelmed by the other release titles.
The second game was OK, but had just way less fun level design than the first one. The levels are more complicated, and I understand that they felt they needed to expand on the first game, but Monkey Ball just works best when it´s fast, straightforward and simple.
Other than that, the games are mostly bad in my opinion. Super Monkey Ball Adventure is the only game I think I have ever returned. Played it for 2 hours and it was just really boring and uninspired. Splitz is not awful, but definitely just a worse version of the first two games.
Mania is good, but it´s also mostly recycling the earlier titles.
As some have already said, I doubt the series will reach any new heights anytime soon. Would be a miracle if the original developers somehow would get their hands on the series again, but I wouldn´t count on it.
After spending 50+ hours on SaGa: Emerald Beyond during the last two weeks, right now I feel like that is my favourite SaGa game. I of course understand that it is too early for it to make the absolute top on a list like this, but I expect it to rise high in the ranks among fans during the coming years.
I have always liked the series, but none of the games have been a real masterpiece (for me). Emerald Beyond might not be a masterpiece either, but it´s extremely addictive and have a gameplay and progression loop that just really works for multiple playthroughs. There is so much more for me left to see, do and accomplish.
In previous SaGa games the "multiple protagonist" angle have mostly felt like a gimmick. Playing through a 40 hour rpg 7 times as different protagonists with minor differences...no. And this has kind of made that approach a bit misguided - sounds intriguing, but only the real hardcore would ever play the game that many times. But in Emerald Beyond they have made it a part of the whole experience, with smaller campaigns and a better shared progression system.
(And yes, SaGa Frontier had 7 (8 in Remastered) smaller campaigns, but also recycled content more heavily than Emerald Beyond)
After reading this review and some more positive reviews, i felt like this review was maybe a bit harsh and that I would agree more with the positive reviews - that really appreciated the relaxing part of this game. Which Im all up for.
But after playing this game for 3 hours I have to say that I agree with every word in this review. This game is just missing something. It sounds like it does what it should, but it´s just not very fun. Even a relaxing game needs to have some hook or fun gameplay, and swimming around in boring random environments scanning a lot of random fish and picking up random shining objects on the ground is all there is. And it´s not fun.
I will try the game a bit more but it seems there just isn´t anything more to this game than this, and that is really disappointing.

Re: Review: Endless Ocean: Luminous (Switch) - A Meditative Marine Milieu, But Incredibly Shallow
