Re: USA WiiWare Update: Groovin' Blocks

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

Good call lordbowser. 800 is just the right price for this game, I think. I was worried it would be 1000, but those 200 points really makes a difference when it comes to feeling like you're getting a good deal. I'll probably pick this up as long as the review isn't terrible.

The comparison with Lumines has me intrigued, since I can't find a copy anywhere. Slightly worrying is the comment about adding online features in future versions. If they're going to update the game, I wonder if we will have the option of downloading updates for the WiiWare version (and how much they will cost...).

France may have to wait an extra week for their 250th game, as next week may be a "WiiWare only" week (assuming they revert back to their non-Hanabi antics). It would be great if they get Super Mario Kart or Majora's Mask, but that may be asking too much! We'll see, I suppose!

Re: Drake's Ratings Roundup - August 2008

France is definitely getting the shaft on those exclusive games. Most of the games that France has that NA doesn't have yet are Commodore 64 games (we don't have them because we don't have the system) and a few games that are already slated to come to NA anyway. On the other hand, with a lot of the games that NA has that France doesn't, there's really no excuse for not having them.

I suspect that France's alternating VC/WW weeks with large numbers of VC games on their weeks might help them make up the missing VC games very gradually, though.

Also on the bright side, the latest coming soon lists may be small, but they're populated with good games.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (27th August)

SuperMario, I'm a smart enough poster that I don't care about looking like one. I wonder what makes you need to step in and make accusatory, inflammatory comments that have nothing to do with the debate...?

That said, I do enjoy reading this site and VC-R enough that I take a personal interest in the site itself looking like a "smart" site, and simple errors like this one are pretty hard to tolerate. Canadians do indeed refer to themselves as living in the American "region" (note the use of the word region, as used in the original version of this article), especially in the context of video games where media are commonly divided into North America, PAL, and Japan.

@Dazza - the fact that I am a Canadian has little to do with the fundamental point, but if you just want to write it off like that instead of thinking about it, that's fine. Your point about different regional terminology (football is a good example!) is well taken, so I'm going to apologize for being so vehement in calling it an error and settle on the term inaccuracy. When regional linguistic differences are involved, especially on a site with international readership like this one, I think it's best to be as clear and explicit as possible. You can see where "American region" could be confusing to different audiences while "North American region" or "the US" would be less so.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (27th August)

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

@Dazza - North America is in America. Not only that, but when used to denote a region, "America" generally refers to North America in this context (except probably in South America, but I don't see anyone reporting on their specific gaming culture all that often). "America" can be used as a colloquial term for The United States of America, but The United States of America is not a region, it's a country. And US/USA is shorter than "America" as an abbreviated referent for that country anyway. I win either way.

It's fine to be stubborn, but don't be stubborn and protective about your mistakes, especially when you're in a business that involves dealing with the public.

I am SO glad this game got a better rating than Strong Bad. Pretty awesome! I was afraid people would sell this one short because it's a fish tank sim, but it really does seem like good value for the money.

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

Everyone who's whining about not getting the games they want or losing hope about ever getting the games should remember that a lot of heavy hitting games have come up on the radar for release within the next half-year or so. Mega Man 1 2 and 9, Samurai Shodown 2, SMRPG, Earthbound, Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force 2, and who knows what on WiiWare. There's still tons of time for us to get great games at a very acceptable pace. Don't Panic.

Re: Publishers Remain Tight-Lipped On Black Monday Debacle

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

Half-decent little bit of investigation in this article, but in the last paragraph you misused the word "ineptitude". This certainly wasn't a bumbling mistake on Nintendo's part. They didn't botch the release dates with these guys by accident.

I know we're all upset about this unfortunate switcheroo, but if we're trying to be "serious" video games "journalists" it's no excuse to let our emotions have a negative impact on our writing.

Re: Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

I liked this game as much as the next Genesis owner, but there's so little to differentiate it in practical terms from SFIIT on the SNES that it's definitely not worth getting for anyone who already has another version. Someone outlined the differences above, so if you don't have a version of SFII yet, you can take those into consideration when deciding.

Re: US VC Releases - 14th July - Donkey Kong 3

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

@Mike - As I said, just because something is old doesn't mean it's a classic. I'll now add that just because some people like it and some people don't doesn't mean something is a classic. Classic games are generally successful games that have had an impact on the industry/history of gaming. Barely anyone even knew about DK3 back in its day. Sure, it was a sequel to a classic game (DK), but that doesn't make it classic. Super Mario Sunshine is not classic, for example. Dig Dug is a classic because it was yet another pioneer of inventive arcade gameplay (kind of like how Qbert is a classic even though you don't see it around much these days).

Re: US VC Releases - 14th July - Donkey Kong 3

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

Slangman is right. It's a DK game, but it's not good. Also, Mike, it's not really a classic, either. It's a pretty bad tack-on to the series that most people don't know about. Still, it's one of those NES-Arcade style games that some people really enjoy.

I'm not complaining - I actually like weeks like this - I'm just waiting for the hilarious SMRPG Mega Man etc. comments. Oh ho ho ho ho!

Re: Beer Pong Goes Alcohol Free

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

Why are people pooping on Nintendo over this? Nintendo didn't censor the game. Nintendo informed them of the angry soccer mom lobby. They probably gave them a choice between changing the "theme" of the game or having it changed for them, but this hardly amounts to censorship, especially "heavy" censorship.

Re: Beer Pong Goes Alcohol Free

Jogurt_the_Yogurt

This game was only going to sell about 4 copies worldwide anyway. Now if they try to use this name-change as an excuse for poor sales, they're delusional idiots. And Darren, I sure hope you were being facetious when you said the name change to Pong Toss would make any difference whatsoever.
