@Mazero, I'm not saying you spend your money on a whim. Just that I don't. With regards to Jace's comment about not trying out these other games, it should be noted that everyone games differently. Everyone consumes cultural products differently. Some people buy stuff because it looks interesting and they want to see if they'll like it. Others buy stuff because they already know that they like it. 90% of VC games I have are games that I already owned on the original system. That consumption pattern will carry over to WiiWare, where I will buy Dr. Mario and Tetris. And it's perfectly valid.
@Mazero — I'm not going to try the other games because I don't spend my money on a whim. I only buy games I already know I like. @ whalleywhat — Dr. Mario is awesome. It's certainly not a Tetris knock-off, unless you think all puzzle games that feature stuff falling downward are Tetris knock-offs (I don't).
No Dr. Mario? Huge disappointment. I thought I might spend leftover points after Dr. Mario on one of these other games, just as a random test, to throw them a bone or something. But now I won't be buying any of these WiiWare "games".
People complaining about this being the end of the VC are making me laugh quite a bit, though. Hahaha!
PPL is just Tetris Attack? I thought it might have some other games as well. Oh well, I still consider it a good release.
@Adam, there's no set time a game has to wait after being ESRB rated, so next week wouldn't be "too soon". The WiiWare launch next week might interfere with EB's release at that time, though. Still, don't be surprised if it comes sooner than you think—Nintendo is clearly trying to use it as a big marquee release.
This thread is hilarious. Most of this uninformed anti-Nintendo whining and woe-is-me victimization is even worse than the supposed fanboyism that's being condemned.
I don't see how it could possibly have anything to do with the game's content (Hitler, explosions, guns). The game was released on the NES. That's the version that would be released on the VC—censorship, changes and all. I don't think Nintendo's censorial standards have got tighter since then.
Those who are exploding the issue out of proportion, including Nintendo's own games in the potential implications, are somewhat hilarious. Nintendo won't release its own games on the VC because they're being released on other platforms? Please. It also has nothing to do with Mega Man, since Mega Man is already on the VC in Europe.
No Bionic Commando (yet) is indeed a shame, though. I'm still not entirely convinced by this explanation, but whatever.
If you like fighters, but you're sick and tired of Street Fighter, then Clayfighter is a really good option. Clayfighter and Eternal Champions are underrated, oft-overlooked fighting gems in their own right.
There you go, four games. I bet it's still not enough to make some ingrates happy. Waiting for complaints about game quality, new systems, or lack of Final Fantasy...
1. Romance of the Three Kingdoms (NES) 2. Romance of the Three Kingdoms II (SNES) 3. Romance of the Three Kingdoms III (SNES) 4. Gemfire (SNES) 5. Warsong (Genesis) — Bring it to North America already!
@ DJ Triforce: For a good Wii RPG, try Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. It's not only one of the best games for the Wii, but it's one of the best tactical RPGs, period.
And of course the VC is populated by a few "classic" RPGs like Breath of Fire II and Shining Force. But other than Final Fantasy, RPGs still aren't a mainstream enough genre to land titles on a weekly best seller list like this VC sales chart.
1) We don't know how transparent Nintendo is with this top 20 list. Without real figures, we can't know if those are actually the top 20 or if they're just likely candidates that Nintendo wants to promote even further.
2) I think the issue with games for the Wii proper is a little bit different. The reason first party games on the Wii are doing so well is because they're freakin' excellent. Twilight Princess, Galaxy, Brawl, Fire Emblem, and Metroid Prime 3 are all top-notch games, probably the best in their respective series that we've seen for a long time. Third party sales are obviously going to pale in comparison for a while. But after Kart, I think Nintendo is going to have already unleashed the first wave of big guns, and third-party software sales should pick up. I think the developers know this, too. The ones who aren't crybabies or shovelware shovellers, anyway.
I've heard nothing but good things about this, and I probably wouldn't worry too much about starting with this one and not bothering with the previous games. But we need a better video for this! I want to see gameplay (battles, menus), not just the intro (which isn't really going to help me decide whether the game's for me).
I've been waiting for PS4. I've never played a PS game, and since many people say it's the best in the series, I thought I might as well start there and dispense with the rest.
Of course it doesn't need the FF name on it. Square's always done that to sell games (FF Mystic Quest, slapping the FF name on games in the Mana and SaGa series, etc.). Besides that, it just doesn't look that interesting.
The only one on that vid that looks like it would keep me and my family entertained for any length of time is Dr. Mario. Then it's a wait and see what games come out that aren't about eating or poking stuff.
Dr. Mario and now WW Tetris are going to be instant downloads for me. This is excellent, excellent news. Now it looks like I don't need to get Puyo Puyo 2, since I'll have enough variety in the puzzle genre to keep me happy.
Closing with a question about Arnie—priceless. Neat to see someone developing WiiWare for the bongos. 12 players in one room could get a little crazy. The wireless nunchuk would probably be pretty cool with this.
Not too bad a week. One game is tolerable if it's a good one. And maybe North America will end up with River City Ransom next week in a strange kind of delayed tradeoff...
Even though this game is legendary and a lot of fun, River City Ransom is still a million times better. Still, DD has character, and it's worth 3 stars on the Jogurt scale. (Does that mean RCR is worth 3 million stars...?)
@Mike, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV is an excellent game, and the VC is sorely lacking in serious strategy games. I'd be really happy if we got more of the RTK series.
I'll admit I'd rather have RCR than both of these games combined, but I'm no crybaby. It's always good to see a surprise N64 game turn up, and Kirby fans should be really happy with it.
You just know there's going to be a waste catch-up week where NA gets River City Ransom and EU gets Kirby 64.
@whalleywhat: Maybe it is out of print, I didn't know that. But the shelves at the local EBs are overflowing with those Mega Man collections. If it is indeed out of print, then perhaps we'll see them on the VC eventually, but I'd bet the farm on the fact that those collections are the cause for at least some delay. All I'm saying is there was at least some rationale for them not rushing Mega Man to North America after Europe got it. There is no such rationale for River City Ransom.

Re: New name for Dr. Mario WiiWare
Tetris and Dr.Mario are completely different games. I plan to get both.
Re: US VC Releases - 5th May - Pokemon Puzzle League
@NintendoBrad, you already have an online-capable Dr. Mario game? That's pretty awesome. I thought the WiiWare version was my only option for that.
Re: Star Parodier and other imports in the next Hanabi festival
They said there will be more than just the titles announced, so I think Europe may finally be getting treated to EarthBound sometime this month.

Re: ESRB Update: EarthBound Finally Coming To Virtual Console!
I don't want to say I told you so... but I told you so. Actually, I did want to say that.
Re: RPG Titles Dominate Nintendo Power’s Most Wanted List
The more RPGs the better. I don't see how it could hurt. I know I'd be buying a lot more VC games if there were more RPGs.

I want that penguin game!

Re: Top 20 'popular titles' on the Virtual Console - April 2008 (USA)
Sonic definitely isn't the icon Sega thinks he is. I know a lot of people who are surprised that they're still even making Sonic games.
Re: Top 20 'popular titles' on the Virtual Console - April 2008 (USA)
@ konkerdoodle, not too surprising, since the VC is a Nintendo system on a Nintendo console...
Re: Top 20 'popular titles' on the Virtual Console - April 2008 (USA)
@ JJ, you're exactly right. People go on the VC and buy the games they know—in many cases the games they already have.

Re: US VC Releases - 21st April - River City Ransom
Hraey! Best VC week of the year!
Re: EU VC Release - 18th April - Sega Week - Phantasy Star III
This is a good release, if only because it means PSIV is one step closer to being released. Hraey!
Re: Super Turrican - Director's Cut Possibly Coming To VC?
Starfox 2! Nintendo's "lost" Mother translation!
Re: 3 NES Beat 'em ups coming to US Virtual Console soon
I'll be downloading River City Ransom at least three times. Great game. One of the best (if not the best) on the NES.

Agree with Drake. Soulblazer is teh awezomez.

Dark Wizard

Woohoo, sweet! I LOVE River City Ransom!
Re: Nintendo Power Poll - What Games Do You Want To See?
1. Romance of the Three Kingdoms (NES)

5. Warsong (Genesis) — Bring it to North America already!
Re: Virtual Boy Confirmed for Virtual Console
Re: US VC Releases - March 31st - Wonder Boy
I'm willing to bet that C64 and SMS won't stay region-exclusive for very long.
Re: Hudson announces WiiWare lineup, Alien Crush sequel
I'd pay 1000WP for Tetris. Here's hoping it doesn't take too much longer than July to get to North America.
Re: Master System hitting US "soon", 400 points per game
400 points is good news, anyway, unless they decide to make Phantasy Star and Golden Axe Warrior cost an extra 100 for "mysterious" reasons...
Re: Japanese WiiWare Service – GO! GO! GO!
I've got 1000 points and 100 blocks saved for the good Doctor!

Easy five stars. What more can I say?

Is MT a lot different from ST?
Re: Virtual Console Top 20 – March 12th to March 19th
Two issues here:
1) We don't know how transparent Nintendo is with this top 20 list. Without real figures, we can't know if those are actually the top 20 or if they're just likely candidates that Nintendo wants to promote even further.
2) I think the issue with games for the Wii proper is a little bit different. The reason first party games on the Wii are doing so well is because they're freakin' excellent. Re: Dr. Mario & Bacteria Extermination
Do we have an expected price for this yet?
Re: Talking Point: The State of Play of the Virtual Console
I think the VC is in great shape.
Re: USK update - Four new Sega games: Phantasy Star, Gley Lancer
I've been waiting for PS4. I've never played a PS game, and since many people say it's the best in the series, I thought I might as well start there and dispense with the rest.

Methinks they're actually using Brawl's impending release as an excuse for a scant VC schedule?
Re: MSX to Hit Japanese Virtual Console in May
I'm totally in favour of adding new systems. I just can't wait till we get to the newer ones. I want Sega CD and Panasonic 3D0!
