Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Will Reportedly Be Officially Revealed This Thursday

Jeronan

Tuesday has passed (for Japan) and not a peep from Nintendo.

So I guess we can call this yet another hoax.

I am still predicting a late February or even March time frame for the official reveal.

There is literally no need for Nintendo to rush the announcement. Especially if the Console is not going to release until October / November this year.

The original Switch also had over a year (if not longer) of speculations, rumors, supposed leaks, etc and Nintendo ignored it all and still announced at the exact date they planned to announce it. Half a year before the release.

Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Will Reportedly Be Officially Revealed This Thursday

Jeronan

@PikaPhantom Pokemon games always release worldwide.

Adding simultaneous to the sentence is unncessary, unless you mean it will launch on both consoles simultaneously.

In reality it doesn't even really matter, the game will run on both Switch 1 and 2 no matter what, since the Switch 2 is fully backwards compatible.

Just hope that Gamefreak has some next-gen update for the Switch 2 (in case the games release before the Switch 2 launch) with updated graphics. As the Scarlet/Violet game looks and runs absolutely terrible on the current Switch.
So you can bet this new game won't look and run any better on the Switch 1.

Re: Rumour: Insider Claims That Halo: Master Chief Collection Will Come To 'Switch 2'

Jeronan

@Olliemar28 PS. Don't see my comments as an personal attack, but just as honest critique.

This article isn't the best example, but it's still an unverifiable rumor.
Many of these rumors are known to be fake and can't be verified (end up being fake) and as such is just clickbait articles for traction.

Especially the last two weeks you really have been in overdrive, spamming one rumor article after the other. Sorry to say, but It gets tiring.

I know there isn't much else to report lately regarding Nintendo and hasn't been for quite a while. That's always the case at the end of a Console life cycle.

But why do you post these obviously fake rumors, instead of more interesting articles? Because it generates clicks and traction to your site.
Just writing a caption that we have to take this information with a grain of salt, doesn't change the fact that you are still spreading this stuff and as such is clickbait / fake news in itself.

I mean... those accessory leaks are obviously interesting and hard to ignore. As they are actually credible.

In the end tough. The fact remains that Nintendo isn't going to budge. They not going to be pressured. Their reveal date is planned and set in stone, like they always do.
They already said last year before summer, that the next console will be revealed before the end of the fiscal year.
So we already know this to be February at it's earliest, but more likely March.

Big companies like Apple have been dealing with leaks and spoilers for many years and never ever have they felt pressured in moving their presentation and release dates.

So why people think that Nintendo will act differently? No idea.

Re: Surprise! Another 'Switch 2' Accessory Has Been Revealed

Jeronan

@RenanKJ This has been happening for many years.

Just look at Apple for example, where their upcoming phones and other products get leaked months in advance, due to leaks out of the factory/assembly lines and accessory makers.
It's been happening each and every year for god knows how long already.

Yet Apple isn't disturbed by it and sticks to their presentation and release schedules as always.

So why would you expect Nintendo to be disturbed by this and change their reveal and release schedules, because of leaks and rumors?
They will reveal the new console when they are ready and the date they have planned, like they always have.

Re: Nintendo Breaks Silence On 'Switch 2' Image And Video Leaks

Jeronan

@marck13 What is Nintendo going to do?

Genki is not an officially licensed accessory maker for Nintendo, like Hori and as such has not signed any contract nor being under any NDA.

Anyone can make any accessory for a product. All the Product owner can do is either accept that fact and just say that it's not an officially licensed product and as such doesn't fall under any warranty by them.

It would be a different matter if someone for example makes an exact clone of a Joy-Con and starts selling that. Then it would fall under Copyright infringement.
Or sell an accessory in Nintendo official branded product packaging, while not having a license agreement. That would be also be Copyright infringement and false advertising.

You can buy plenty of Joy-con alternatives today that are not officially licensed. They just don't support remote bluetooth nor have Amiibo (NFC) readers on them.
Though, Hori joy-cons and controllers don't either (and they are officially licensed).

Re: Rumour: Insider Claims That Halo: Master Chief Collection Will Come To 'Switch 2'

Jeronan

@SillyG That is why I said up to 128GB.

PS5 and XBOX series X games are still pressed on 50GB BluRay and larger games that don't fit on a single disc, come on two discs.
They also can get away with it, since the discs are just for initial storage and games can be pressed on these discs in heavily compressed format, since you can't play directly from disc and always need to install the games on your console first. Since BluRay read speeds are just too slow.
That is also why PS5 and XBOX Series X come standard with 1TB NVMe m.2 storage.

It's also extremely cheap for the Game publishers, since 50GB BluRays cost under a dollar. So even if they have to press their game on 2 BluRay discs, its less than 2 dollars in cost.

This is why gaming cartridges are just so outdated and have a huge downside in todays demanding games.
Of course BluRay for a hybrid console like the Switch is out of the question.

The Switch 2 will support 4K (via NVidia DLSS upscaling), so you will look at PS4/XBox One game sizes ( 50-70GB average ).

If publishers already refuse to use 32GB Switch cartridges due to too high cost, you can completely forget to convince them to consider the even more expensive 64GB size.

So Nintendo will have to pull some technical miracle out of their hat with the Switch 2 and come with an updated cartridge solution that offers both better performance and at a much lower cost.

Another route could be for the Switch 2 to come standard with 1TB NVMe m.2 storage, so demanding games that take up a large chunk of space can just be offered digitally via download.

I know the physical crowd will cry foul over this, but this is just a reality we need to accept for a hybrid console that offers both docked and handheld gaming.

Modern games become more demanding and take up more and more storage. The technology is just not there yet to produce cartridges with high enough capacity and performance at a very low price that Publishers demand to consider a physical release.

Re: Rumour: Insider Claims That Halo: Master Chief Collection Will Come To 'Switch 2'

Jeronan

@SillyG To fit the entire Master Chief Collection on a cartridge, you would need a 128GB capacity cartridge.

Even the cheapest 128GB MicroSD card is too expensive (and would have too slow performance as well). It would eat too much in the profits.

So, IF it even comes to the Switch 2, it will be download only. Unless for some miracle Nintendo uses a new much cheaper (and better performing) storage medium for the Switch 2 cartridge.

I know the new MicroSD Express standard supports up to 800MB/s and (if you can get hold of it) you can buy a 128GB Sandisk sample card for around 80 bucks.

Even if Nintendo orders a high volume, you will still be looking at at least 20-25 bucks per card. It's just too expensive.
That is more than the current 32GB cards for the Switch, which Game distributors refused to use already.

A multilayer BluRay (up to 128GB capacity) costs just a couple bucks (even less when they order and print several million game copies).

This is just a serious downside of the Cartridge format. It worked fine for the old small handheld consoles that had low resolution screens, like the DS and 3DS. So texture resolution was very low and as result the games required very little storage space.

Re: Switch 2 'Indentations' Make It Incompatible With Original Switch Dock, Says Genki

Jeronan

It depends what kind of HDMI hardware there is in the current Switch docks and if they support 4K output?

It wouldn't surprise me that Nintendo tried to squeeze out as much profit as possible and use cheaper HDMI components in the Switch docks, since the current max. supported output for OG Switch and OLED Switch is 1080p. So why put a more expensive HDMI component in the dock when it doesn't get used?

I mean, physical dimension wise there shouldn't be any issue as long as the thickness of the Switch 2 is the same with USB-C port on the bottom in the middle. It then doesn't matter if the Switch is wider and higher in size. It can slot into the existing dock just fine.
The power input is USB-C, so you can just swap the current OG Switch Power adapter with the new Switch 2 Power adapter if that is also USB-C (which I expect it will be).

But I simply expect they will come with a new Dock. As others said, it might actually have extra built-in cooling to help cool the Switch 2 when docked, to maximize performance.
One of the main drawbacks of the current Switch is that the Tegra X1 SoC had to be underclocked by at least 33% to not overheat the console and in handheld mode its even underclocked as much as 70%!

It's insane really when you think about it with the current Switch and how underutilized the Tegra X1 SoC is. Think about how much more they could have squeezed out of the Switch (especially docked), with better cooling! It's pretty sad.
Though, of course battery life also had a say in this.

Re: GameStop's Internal Database Lists Multiple 'Switch 2' Accessory SKUs

Jeronan

@Dm9982 Thank you. That explains it and why no store has it, as I was really confused when he said 2019 as I had never heard of MicroSD Express with these 800+ MB/s speeds until very recently.

The best MicroSD cards currently widely available are the MicroSD V90 cards, which I have a 256GB one of that I pair with my 512GB CFExpress type B card in my Nikon Z8 camera.

And yes you are right and why I don't use an expensive V90 card in my current OLED Switch, but just my old 256GB card from the OG Switch, that has an equivalent speed of the current V30 cards, since there is no official info available that the OLED Switch has an improved updated MicroSD card reader that supports these higher transfer rates. As all the official licensed and recommended MicroSD cards for the Switch are V30 type of cards.

I think people need to learn and understand the price point of Nintendo's consoles and why you will never see cutting edge technology in their consoles. It's simply not possible at that price point Nintendo tries to sell their consoles at.

Nintendo has traditionally always tried to sell their consoles at at least 30% lower price than XBOX and Playstation.
They also adamant at selling their consoles with a profit and not at a loss, which was traditionally the case with XBOX and Playstation and why these consoles could offer that kind of performance at such price points.

This has changed now of course and both XBOX Series X and Playstation 5 are 600+ bucks retail and the latest PS5 Pro goes for nearly 1000 bucks.

But Nintendo will want to stay below the 400-450 bucks mark, so it remains to be seen if we even get m.2 onboard storage performance and since you now said that this new MicroSD Express standard is "that" new, I hardly doubt it will find it's way into the Switch 2 already this year. Though, since MicroSD is a standard and backwards compatible, its feasable the Switch 2 can be made ready to support MicroSD Express in the future, when it's fully ready and widely available. But this of course still depends on the cost of these new MicroSD reader components that supports these transfer speeds.

Re: GameStop's Internal Database Lists Multiple 'Switch 2' Accessory SKUs

Jeronan

@Spider-Kev Are you sure you not mixing it up with cards just branded that way, like Express MicroSD, etc.

The real (that actually support 800mb/s) MicroSD Express cards are still very limited available. I can barely find any and they are still fairly expensive too.
You mostly find the V30, V60 and V90 cards.

This kind of storage is mostly used in Cameras, Action cameras, etc (and to some extend micro computers like Raspberry). Photo/Video cameras are mostly switching to CFExpress now, for the much faster speeds required to record 4K, 6K and now 8K Video and ability for much higher write speeds for high FPS shooting.
And here, camera's that have MicroSD slots, support the new Vxx format of microSD cards, where the highend V90 cards support up to 300MB/s. While CFExpress goes towards 2000MB/s speeds now with the latest cards.

I haven't seen a single "real" MicroSD Express card (800mb/s) anywhere in local stores (not even in our Camera stores that sell anything from consumer to top of the line professional stuff) and I can only find one single card ( Sandisk microSD Express - 880MB/s in 128 and 256GB size) on one online store, on order only.

Probably, because there isn't (at least hardly) any known hardware available yet that supports this high speed MicroSD Express format.

Re: Genki Claims The 'Switch 2' Joy-Con Can Be Removed By 'Brute Force'

Jeronan

@Rob3008 As far as I know only companies like Hori are an officially licensed accessory maker and is allowed to ship its alternative Joy-con's and controllers in Official Nintendo packaging.

You can literally buy all kinds of weird stuff for the Nintendo Switch that isn't officially licensed. Including off-brand controllers and joy-cons, etc that don't have the officially licensed product logo.

That is probably why he can freely open his mouth, since he not under any license contract with Nintendo.
If you look at their current catalog, they haven't got much for the Nintendo Switch. Just some USB wall chargers, a kickstand and some bluetooth micro controller.
All not officially licensed products.

Re: GameStop's Internal Database Lists Multiple 'Switch 2' Accessory SKUs

Jeronan

@OldGamer999 it will be even faster, since the original Switch doesn't support the full capability of todays microSD cards.

It's a total waste of money buying a v90 microSD card and instead just pay half for a v30.
I haven't actually tested if the OLED version of the Switch has an updated reader that actually supports the full performance capabilities of todays v90 cards though.
As I didn't bother retesting on my Switch OLED, when I got that one. I just use the same 256GB card (UHS-1) I bought for the OG Switch at the time.
These are also still the official recommended ones and support up to 100/90 mb/s. (similar to todays v30 class)

The newer microSD cards with vXX clasification are much faster. Especially the v60 and v90 ones, which support up to 300mb/s.

It would make sense that the Switch 2 would support the new MicroSD Express cards, so expanded storage performance doesn't fall too far behind the onboard storage which will hopefully be superfast m.2 storage.
I would have rather seen support for CF Express as expanded storage (as this is becoming more and more the standard format in Consumer cameras), since those cards are more durable and twice as fast (though sadly, also twice the price).

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con

Jeronan

@DaniPooo You have to compare OLED TV vs MicroLED/LCD TV in same price/spec ranges. Then you will see they are fairly similar priced these days.

I paid 3500 bucks for my LG OLED TV (midrange) 9 years ago (when the tech was still fairly new and Plasma on it's way out), when Highend LCD/microLED TV's were at the same price point.

Now the same midrange OLED TV can be bought at the same price as a Midrange LCD/microLED TV, with same functionality, performance, etc.

It's a minefiled out there, so you have to compare spec for spec.

It's easier to just look at Computer monitors. Midrange gaming OLED 27inch monitor costs the same as a midrange IPS 27inch Monitor (around 400 bucks).

I have a fairly high-end, fully calibrated Dell IPS 32inch 4K monitor and paid 1000 bucks for it about 5 years ago.
I can now buy a 32inch OLED 4K monitor for the same price today.

Maybe pricing is a bit different in US compared to here in Europe.

Re: Surprise Leak Reveals Lenovo Is Making Another Switch-Like Gaming Handheld

Jeronan

@Bolt_Strike No not at all. Just like with the original iPhone and everyone and their grandmother starting copying them ever since.

It means the Switch's design is just that good and it works.

Nintendo still has a major advantage over the competition and that is all their trademarked IP's and exclusive 1st party games that only release on Nintendo consoles.

That is the main reason why people still buy Nintendo consoles, otherwise Nintendo would have been already out of the console business long ago.

I am a gaming enthusiast and also have the PS5 and XBOX Series X at home, including a powerful gaming PC (which I always build and upgrade myself).

If I was only playing non-Nintendo games, why in earth would I buy a Nintendo console? When XBOX and Playstation have always been superior performing consoles.

Nintendo has never joined this power race and always banked on being different and having a very powerful and large exclusive gaming catalog.

Remember, the Pokemon Company (which Nintendo owns 50%) makes way more money on the Pokemon franchise alone each year, then Nintendo's entire business (this includes their console sales).

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

@Lord I am pretty sure The Switch 2 will have a completely different cartridge design, hopefully updated to existing tech that both performs better is also much cheaper to produce. As that is a problem with the current Switch 1 cartridges. The are custom design, expensive to produce and especially the large capacity ones are too expensive.
The 3DS supported both 2DS and 3DS cartridges, but 3DS cartridges didn't fit in a 2DS console.

I am also sure the Retail packaging will be completely different, to avoid buying mistakes.

For example. Just look at Playstation. PS4 and PS5 games are placed together on the store shelves even today. Many new games still release for both PS4 and PS5.
So theoretically they don't even have to change the shape of the current Switch cartridge at all. As long as they have clear distinct packaging.

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

To continue from previous post (was getting too long).
It also makes perfect business sense and Nintendo finally listening to their user base, that has been hammering Nintendo for the next console to be fully backwards compatible with existing Switch catalog.
As people are just tired having to lose everything again and starting all over, having to buy remakes/rereleases all over again.

Now they can continue to sell the Switch 1, alongside the Switch 2, with the entire Switch 1 catalog compatible with the Switch 2.
This means Nintendo can continue to sell the entire Switch 1 game catalog also for the new Switch 2, for zero extra effort and make more profit!

Win-Win for everyone.

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

@-wc- People don't want Nintendo to go back to traditional home console and dedicated handheld (like 3DS). Having to buy two consoles and double paying for games on both Home Console and handheld.

Hybrid couldn't be done earlier, due to technology not being ready yet.

The WiiU was basically a stepping stone towards the idea of a Hybrid Console.
The WiiU was a fantastic console, but it should never have been named that way and it simply failed purely due to terrible Marketing mistakes.
It's incredibly sad what happened to the WiiU, as I absolutely loved the console.
It's just that the Gamepad had limited range and you couldn't walk too far from the console. So most games I just played with a regular controller, unless the Gamepad was required as secondary screen.
But the seed was planted. The idea was there. Since it was incredibly convenient to be able to play WiiU games remotely on the GamePad, when the TV was in use.

The Switch console is the future. That's why it's so immensively succesful. You can play it docked on TV as traditional console and take it with you anywhere and play handheld.

But the Switch wasn't perfect and the NVidia Tegra X1 SoC was a bit outdated already at the time of the Switch release.
So it's quite underpowered and the SoC even had to be underclocked to not cause overheating issues within the slim console Chassis.
It also had disappointing little onboard storage and not high performing either.
Docked the max. resolution to TV was only 1080p, but a lot of games couldn't even output it due to performance limitations (including some of Nintendo's own first party games).

So if the Switch 2 can solve the above issues, Nintendo will have a new winner in their hands.

The Switch 2 will have a brand new custom NVidia SoC, which was developed solely for the Switch 2 via collaboration between Nintendo and NVidia.
It will support the latest DLSS tech. Especially if its going to use the just announced DLSS 4!
It will also have more and faster RAM and superfast m.2 storage onboard.

This will be an incredible improvement from the Switch 1. Especially docked, the traditional console experience will be way better. As we can expect more consistent performance and 4K resolution due to NVidia DLSS upscaling tech.

And if they managed to improve the Joy-con's as well, by finally updating to Hall Effect sticks to eliminate the drift problems of the Switch 1 and better more firm connection to the console.
That would be another big improvement.

The design philosophy of the Nintendo Switch is sound. It's the future. It works and people like it. It's why it's been such an incredible success.

Just like the smartphone revolution since the introduction of the first iPhone almost two decades ago. The core design and interface hasn't changed much since then. Other than bigger sized models, improved screens and onboard tech, improved cameras and software.

Why change something what works!

The Switch 2 won't be released to immediately replace the Switch 1. It will most likely exist alongside the Switch 2 for quite a few more years, as the cheaper alternative with a lower price.

Like the PS5 and XBOX Series X/S. It will be mostly enthusiasts, people that want the latest and greatest, want the best performance, that will buy the Switch 2 at first and then slowly over the coming years the Switch 2 will finally replace the Switch 1, when more and more new games only come out for the Switch 2.

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

@-wc- Sorry to bring it to you, but this Switch 2 is exactly what most people are expecting and hoping for!

A much more powerful Switch console, together with other iterative improvements. Like better joy-cons (hall effect), better joy-con connections to console. Faster and larger onboard storage.

So many people and media have been screaming since the Switch launch, for Nintendo to release a Switch Pro with more powerful hardware.

There are a lot of games on the Switch that I would love to replay on the Switch 2's more powerful hardware, for a much better more smoother experience.

Pokemon Scarlet/Violet comes immediately to mind, which would greatly benefit from this, but same goes for the Zelda games ( BOTW, TOTK ). While I greatly enjoyed these games, they were a bit blurry on a large 4K TV and suffered from inconsistent performance.
Not to mention to finally get the nextgen updates for Witcher 3 and Skyrim and have a more crisp, better performing handheld experience.
CyberPunk2077 is also almost certainly coming to the Switch 2, with much more powerful NVidia SoC and DLSS support.

Or games that suffer from long loading screens between locations. Lego City Undercover and Hogwarts Legacy. With much faster m.2 storage. These long Loading screen times will be gone on Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch is hugely successful and people love the Hybrid nature of this console.
So why change something that is clearly working.

People are also fed up and tired of each new Nintendo console not being backwards compatible and having to start all over again, losing their existing collection. Since a lot of people don't want multiple consoles at home and had to trade in their old console and games in for the new one.
People want to bring their existing game collection over to a new console.

So here it finally comes. Just not called the Switch Pro, but Switch 2.

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

@brookeobscura It most likely is not hardware, but on software level which is not ready yet.

It could very well be, that they are waiting until NVidia DLSS 4 is ready. Which was just announced with the new RTX50xx GFX cards.

Either way. Nintendo already said before Summer 2024 that they would announced the Switch successor before the end of the fiscal year. Which is end March 2025.
That is still more than 2 and half months until the end of Nintendo's current fiscal year. So I don't expect any announcement until late February or March.

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

Jeronan

@Dev1024 You not going to announce a new console in 2024, when you not going to release it until 2nd half of 2025.

No company in their right mind would do such a thing and financial shoot them in the foot and destroy their 2024 holiday sales.
Just because some people and media are too impatient.

Also, why are people upset if the Switch 2 is going to look nearly identical as the Switch 1. You not going to change an incredible successful design just for the sake of it.
When it works, it works.

Nintendo will just iterate on the Switch 2 design, hopefully addressing some of the issues, like wobbly Joy-con connections and the stick drift issues (use Hall Effect already! ).
Just like they made improvements to the kickstand with the Switch OLED, which as a massive improvement over the OG Switch.

It's just like with Smart Phones today. You reach a point that a given design works, people are comfortable with and making further radical changes will be pointless, unless it makes sense.
Hence, why we just see iterative changes each year with new Phone models for the last 10-15 years.

Re: Tencent Labeled A "Chinese Military Company" By US Government

Jeronan

This label can be justified, when Chinese Military intelligence has full access to user info within TenCent systems. You can bet the Chinese government has full control over TenCent. Like they have with each successful big company in China.

It's well known that it's simply impossible to do any business in China without agreeing to Chinese government oversight.

Western corporations have just hidden these agreements for many years, until this was exposed some years ago. Suddenly causing (fake) concern by Western governments after public pushback after the revelation.
Like the Huawei spy chip scandal in their routers and chips in Micro Systems servers hardware, etc. Chinese intelligence hoarding user data from Mobile devices and systems linked to Chinese corporations. Etc, etc.

It's the main reason, why Western corporations are suddenly trying to divest themselves towards other countries in recent years, like Vietnam and India. Building factories there and moving production out of China.

Also don't forget that Nintendo also suddenly cut their ties with TenCent and pulls out of China.

Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Jeronan

@Toastmaster It's not really the 5 year reclamation law in Norway that is the main issue though.
As most products that are widely available have similar pricing in EUR and NOK. Sometimes it's up to 5% more expensive in Norway with some products due to 25% VAT, instead of 20-25% in other countries within EU.

The problem here is just the grey import. Elkjop and Power literally buy these consoles at US retail price and then still want to make a profit themselves. That is why they end up so much more expensive.
They just did it and bought it in fairly small quantities due to demand for people willing to pay that extra high price to buy locally, but the demand wasn't high enough to go through the lengths of applying for official Nordic distribution rights with Valve.
It also didn't help that Valve had trouble producing enough consoles and was constantly sold out. There were very long periods of time that the Steam Deck was out of stock and not available.

Maybe that will change in the future with the inevitable Steam Deck 2 release and if there will be enough demand here in the Nordic countries and Valve able to produce consoles fast enough and in enough quantities, for some distributor willing to step up and go in talks with Valve.

But then there is also the development of SteamOS itself with the posibility now for other Manufacturers going to be able to produce and sell devices with SteamOS.
The initial rumor was that this first handheld console from Acer was supposed to be the first non-Valve handheld officially releasing with SteamOS. Though, it's now clear that isn't happening.

Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Jeronan

@Qwiff Only very select countries in EU and for limited time.

Here in Norway, it has never been available. I can buy it now at local retailer or some online shop that does grey import, but end up paying almost double the price.
I can literally buy the latest top spec Asus ROG Ally or top spec Legion GO for the same price as the Steam Deck OLED.

So again, ( if you are in the market for a PC handheld ) why would you buy the Steam Deck OLED here in Europe today (with heavily outdated hardware), when you can buy the top spec Legion GO or new Asus ROG Ally 2 for the same price?
Or, even better, this new Acer 8,8inch handheld with even newer hardware specs.

Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Jeronan

@Toastmaster I know, I saw the same interview last year.

The problem still stands, that it's pointless and waste of money to buy the current Steam deck today, unless you only interested in old (retro) games and have the money to waste.
Plus, like I said, it's not even directly available outside of NA. Only via some 3rd party retailers through grey market import (with hefty markup, so you end up paying same price as the new alternatives) with no support from Valve.

So, again, outside NA. Why in earth would I buy the Steam deck, when I can buy the new (much more powerful) alternatives for the same price?

Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Jeronan

@Reztobi While Steamdeck is an amazing handheld, it suffers from outdated hardware. Most new games won't run on it and are not Steamdeck verified or just run extremely poorly and look like a blurry mess.

While design wise the Steamdeck is superior to many of the alternatives, Valve really needs to release a new updated next-gen version.

Also, Steamdeck wasn't even available here in Europe until sometime last year via select few 3rd Party retailers that decided to import them themselves.
Legally, we can still not order the Steamdeck here in Europe directly from Valve!

So technically, for many here in Europe at least. Asus, Lenovo and now Acer's PC handhelds are the only option.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Jeronan

@Znake That might only be a problem for Studio that use ***** outdated unoptimized custom game engines in-house that need the raw power of latest gen consoles just to make their games run.

Most of todays modern engines, like Unreal Engine is cross-platform, including Nintendo Switch support and also supports the full NVidia GFX suite, including DLSS.
So games developed on these modern engines can much more easily ported to the upcoming Switch 2, with little effort.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Jeronan

@Link_of_Hyrule Exactly!

If its comparable to the PS4 in raw power, then that is more than enough to run any game (even the latest games) at 1080p 60fps. (more demanding games will use NVidia DLSS)
Which is what it needs to do in handheld mode.

Docked, NVidia DLSS comes into play and will do its magic with upscaling to 4K. So games will look great on your big TV.
Performance will be further enhanced with todays much faster RAM and m.2 storage tech, compared to the PS4 and current Switch.

Remember, the current gen consoles (and older PS4) use AMD chips and can't use NVidia DLSS. AMD makes great Ryzen processors (literally killing Intel), but they suck in the GFX department and their scaling tech is garbage. NVidia is leagues ahead in the GFX market, especially with the latest DLSS tech.

People seem to forget that NVidia showcased their first iteration of DLSS long way back with the Shield that was already capable for 4K upscaling.
So can you imagine what the Switch 2 will be capable of with a much more modern SoC, much faster RAM and Storage and latest version of NVidia DLSS.

Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Jeronan

Bit overdramatic article, but expected on Nintendolife for anything that isn't Nintendo getting burned into the ground.

They offer two sizes, yet you only focus on the 11inch model, which Acer themselves admit will be an extreme niche product for a select few who will be interested and manufactured in a limited amount.

The vast majority will just go for the more portable 8,8 inch version.

I myself, have an 12,9inch iPad Pro for over 7 years now (still going strong and working) and absolutely love it!
I actually use it time to time for XBOX remote play.

So honestly. That 11inch model is not so crazy if you think about it. Most who would buy that model, will use it with the kickstand and remote controller.
So it can be valid alternative to a Gaming laptop for those who prefer to game with controller anyway.
I never use the Switch with kickstand and remote controller, as the screen is just too small. So here an 11inch screen is actually a big plus for that type of gaming.

People need to try to be a bit more open minded.

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con

@DaniPooo Today a high quality modern LCD panel (mini/microLED) is pretty much the same price as a good OLED panel.

OLED has become so widespread that the cost has come down significantly, due to mass production.

You can buy a good OLED monitor for the same price as midrange IPS LCD monitor.

Same with TV's these days. You can buy a OLED 4K TV for the same price as a modern mini/microLED TV.

Especially with the Switch, since it probably won't have a higher resolution as 1080p (which would be double of todays 720p).
Those small OLED panels are dirt cheap these days. As they are very popular in DIY (like in the Raspberry Pi community for example).

So it would actually be highly disappointing if Nintendo would go back to releasing the Switch 2 with an LCD screen.
As OLED has another advantage in being more battery efficient and with handheld consoles, you want as long playtime as possible, before having to hook it up to a charger.

@Serpenterror Yep. I don't know if I am going to be all too excited about magnetic connections between console and joy-con's.

Unless the magnets are non-glued fitted behind a plastic cap with screws and easily replaceable.
Magnets loose their strength over time and you either need to be able to replace them or re-magnetize them.

I rather would have seen them improving the rail system, for a better long lasting tighter fit. Here the addition of magnets could help with a more secure (less wobbly) fit.

Re: Accessory Maker Genki To Discuss 'Switch 2' Info And Products At CES 2025

@Dazman You cannot compare a big gaming laptop and a small handheld like the Switch.

It's simple physics. It's only so much you can do in a tiny space of a handheld without getting overheating issues or forced to use tight fit earplugs to not get annoyed by extremely loud fan noise to keep the SoC from melting the case and burn your hands.

Just look at today's Windows handhelds with the AMD Extreme SoC and how loud those fans get to keep the system cooled and still it has throttling issues in demanding games.

The rumor of the new NVidia SoC in the Switch 2 is that it's performance will be on par with the PS4, which is a huge performance boost from the Switch 1. Plus it will support the latest DLSS tech to offer 2K (or even 4K) upscaling when docked to TV.
Again, a huge resolution boost to the Switch 1, which topped out at 1080p, but often struggled and throttled down to 720-900p in demanding games.

So if the Switch 2 can offer a steady solid 2K resolution with DLSS when docked. That would be an amazing improvement and frankly good enough visually on most TV's, unless you sit 3 feet away from a 100inch TV.

Re: Atlus Lead Explains Why Persona Protagonists Are High School Males

Jeronan

@swoose The reason is simple. Development costs.

Stick to what works. Male Protagonist + high school setting.

Means they now have a set of systems in place they can keep reusing with each new Persona game.

Having both male and female protagonist as option, means almost double the conversation lines to be written, extra voice over work, etc. As boys and girls just talk and react differently if you want to make it believable. Otherwise what would be the point other than just for the sake of choosing a female option.

Same again with the High school setting. They have systems in place like school questions during class. School clubs. Parttime jobs. Etc. That is being recycled in each subsequent Persona game.
Though, of course it could translate relatively well into a University setting too with a bit more mature Protagonist. It would require minimal adjustments to existing systems.

Re: Surprise Leak Reveals Lenovo Is Releasing Another Switch-Like Gaming Handheld

@Koffeeking0407 Sorry to break it to you, but that's almost twice the weight lol.

I do a lot of photography and 600-700 gram difference with my lenses is very noticeable when you carry / hold something long in your hands.

In general, under 1kg is within a comfort zone for a device to hold for hours on end.
The moment it passes 1kg you going to notice. This has nothing to do with going to the gym or not.
It's your fingers and especially your wrists that will tire out.

@Zverik That has nothing to do with AMD, but simply Lenovo.
It's a ***** Chinese brand with terrible support. Will never buy anything from them.

Asus used to be good, but has gone down the drain as well and has taken some serious reputational damage recently due to their ***** practices and terrible support. Especially all the problems with their Rog Ally handheld and how they mishandled that.
