Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Reveals New Pre-Order Distribution, Available In Two Countries

Jeronan

@Dom_31 No its not Mainline. Legends:Arceus was also not mainline game. It's a spin-off game.

The mainline games on Switch platform are Sword / Shield and followed up by Scarlet / Violet. The mainline games always come with two different versions and follow the usual gym challenges and Elite 4 formula trope.

Spin-off doesn't mean negative or bad... its just a game that deviates from the usual main games.

Re: Video: Switch 2 And Steam Deck Face Off In Cyberpunk 2077 Benchmark Test

Jeronan

@RiasGremory Ehh what? It is on par with PS4 specs SoC wise and nowhere near between PS4 Pro and PS5 specs.

Either way, for such a small and slim device like the Switch 2, PS4 like specs is actually pretty great imho.

It means all games can run 1080p 60fps comfortably and push towards 4K upscaling with NVidia DLSS for even better image quality. Thanks to the extra RAM and superfast NVMe it can handle higher res textures than the PS4.

So in the end, I would place the Switch 2 (due to extra RAM and NVMe) somewhere in between PS4 and PS4 Pro perhaps. Mostly also thanks to NVidia's DLSS that is really helping out there.

Re: EA Worker Pay Continues To Dwindle As CEO Picks Up $5 Million Bonus, Thus Creating Amusingly Tall Financial Graph

Jeronan

@johnedwin Its not just about CEOs making extreme amounts of money.

In this case with EA, employees pay has been reduced year over year, while cost of living has gotten more expensive. In the meanwhile the CEO pay has increased!

There is no justification by giving the CEO exorbitant raises year after year, while at the same time reducing employees salaries!

I have been working in the IT Tech industry here in Europe since 2000, so for a good over 25 years now and my salary has always been going up year after year, never down.

So this here is just a prime example of typical US corporate greed and capitalism, that has spiraled out of control.

Re: Dbrand Admits Its Joy-Con Detachment Response Was "Spectacularly Terrible"

Jeronan

Dbrand has always been a bit "freeform" and "tongue in the cheek" with their responses.

They obviously trying to poke fun at Apple and how they usually respond to customer backlash, when releasing "failed" hardware like the butterfly keyboard scandal that took years and a Class Action lawsuit, before Apple finally admitted it was a terrible design and offered repairs/replacements and ultimately dumping the horrible butterfly design and go back to the old keyboards.

Yet billions of people still keep buying Apple products. Me included by the way lol.

Either way. Most important thing is that they offer free replacements and since my order isn´t processed yet, I expect to get the updated version sent later in July.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@elpardo1984 What I am trying to explain is that you cannot adjust both the HDR Darkness and Brightness on an LCD panel, especially on the Switch 2, which is just a cheap side lit LCD panel. Unless you have a ridiculous expensive LCD TV with backlight zone dimming. Which is the only LCD tech that was able to come remotely close to offer any real HDR and allows for both Darkness and Brightness tuning, like with OLED TVs.
And these high-end LCD TV's quickly disappeared again, when OLED TV's became a lot cheaper and thus much more affordable. Not to mention that this Zone dimming tech had its own set of problems (clouding effect).

So again, the reason why you cannot adjust HDR on the Switch 2, is not because Nintendo doesn't want you to or knows best. There is simply nothing to adjust other than Brightness.
That is why I did not see any difference between HDR On and Off when in hand held mode, by keeping the brightness at similar level. As all the HDR toggle does is setting the default brightness a bit higher on an LCD panel or on PC monitors they use a so called Brightness boost mode (those more expensive panels where the backlight can push a 1000 nits in HDR mode).

So again, I have tested this on my Switch 2 by toggling the HDR ON and OFF and the max brightness was exactly the same.
I am not able to push the screen any brighter with HDR toggle ON.

I also have CP2077 on Switch 2 and it only has a HDR Mode toggle ( OFF and HDR10_PQ ), which literally does nothing in handheld mode other than setting the brightness a bit higher. So when I do this manually with HDR OFF, I get the exact same result. Don't see any difference.

PS. I also just docked my Switch 2, to try this "Adjust HDR" setting in docked mode and oh boy...it only allows a single ordinary Brightness setting. That's it.
While on my PS5, I can adjust three levels in HDR. Brightness(Highlights), Mid-range and Darkness(shadows).

PS2. I just tested CP2077 in docked mode on my OLED TV and switched between toggling HDR On and Off and again didn't notice much difference.
When I switched to my PS5, run CP2077 there and then toggle HDR On and Off, there is a much more noticeable difference.

What I do give the Switch 2 (but more so the CDPR devs) credit for, is that from pure image quality standpoint, I can hardly notice the difference between running CP2077 on PS5 and the Switch 2. Other than the framerate obviously being higher on the PS5. That is really impressive.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@The_Nintend_Pedant Totally agree, but sadly Nintendo has fallen into the same corporate greed trap as many other businesses.

They know they can launch and massively sell an inferior first version of the console and then two years later release a new iteration with better ( OLED ) screen and know that many will double dip and buy the same console again. And so, increasing their profits even more.
They have learned this with the Switch 1 and before that with the 3DS and New 3DS.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@elpardo1984 I am not switching lanes. You cannot "Adjust" HDR while in handheld mode. Period.
I have also extensively tested the HDR toggle (on and off) with a lot of my games (including Mario Kart World and Switch 2 editions of Zelda BOTW/TOTK) and don't see any difference, while on my OLED TV I really do see the difference between no HDR and HDR enabled.

Just upping the brightness a bit on your Switch 2 handheld screen is not HDR.
True HDR is giving you a High Dynamic Range of both colors and brightness. As with True HDR configuration (like with my PS5 and XBOX series X games that support HDR) you adjust two settings. Darkness (how dark a scene can get in HDR) and Brightness (how bright a scene can get in HDR).

Sadly, Nintendo isn't the only one doing these shenanigans. Lot of other screen manufacturers that manage to reach 400 nits, plaster HDR on their specs, while barely (or simply not) reaching the bare minimum specs.

Most ironically, LCD screens colors get actually worse and washed out when pushing the brightness too far. This because blacks/shadows become grey and light areas blown out, since with most common LCDs that are edge lit (or single backlight on little more premium panels), they just light up the entire panel and so washing out the colors, by blowing out the highlights and eliminating the shadows.

It's the very reason why any serious HDR enthusiast will go for an OLED TV.

But back to the Switch 2 in handheld mode. I am getting the most satisfactory result by keeping the screen's brightness a bit lower than you normally would. This gives nicer shadows and richer colors, while also being a little easier on the eyes.

Sadly, so far only Fantasy Life i has a brightness slider in-game. With other games (including Nintendo games, which don't give you any options at all) you have to manually adjust it in the system settings. It's frustrating, but it is what it is.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@Cakefish Well if battery optimization was their goal, they epically failed at it, since the Switch 2 barely reaches half the battery life of my OLED Switch. Which I could comfortably squeeze 5 hours average in play time, while with my Switch 2 I get barely 2-2 1/2 hours.

They could have easily added a few extra mm's in thickness to the Switch 2, so they could have fitted a larger battery pack. It would have increased the ergonomics of the Switch 2 as well, as the Joycon's edges are quite sharp and hurt my hands.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@elpardo1984 I cannot adjust HDR inside games either when in handheld.

The Switch 2 screen is an edge lit LCD panel and barely reaches 400 nits. That's simply not enough to do any real HDR, nor is it capable of darkening darker areas while making lighter areas brighter like with "True" HDR Panels, like my OLED TV.
That is why you cannot adjust HDR in handheld mode, since there is simply nothing to adjust other than your usual brightness slider lol.

The Switch 2 screen is actually quite horrible on high brightness when trying to deliver "fake" HDR and I have now turned off auto brightness as result and manually adjust the brightness down a bit, to get nicer colors in my games in handheld mode.

There is a reason why high end LCD PC Monitors that support "True" HDR are so ridiculously expensive, as they are not edge lit panels.
They are the same price point as OLED screens. So why not go for OLED anyway if HDR content consumption is your main goal.
As at the end of the day, only OLED can deliver true HDR, due to the fact each individual pixel can be switched on/off.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@SuperRetroArt In fast paced games you definitely going to notice the slow response time of a display panel!

Samsung's early LCD TV's (for example) were notoriously slow and suffered horribly with ghosting when watching action / sci-fi movies with fast paced scenes or fast paced sports (like Soccer, etc)!
It's why I stayed far away from them (and still do) and kept my Panasonic Plasma TV for many years more, until LG reached a level of excellence with their OLED TV's (about 9 years ago), when I finally made the switch to an LG OLED TV and still rocking this one 9 years on. I will never buy an large LCD TV.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Jeronan

@EriXz Probably LG and Samsung, like Apple does with their products.

It would be a pretty ***** move by Nintendo if one of the two displays they install in Switch 2 has a faster response time than the other.
That would be grounds for a Class-action lawsuit, as it would mean half the customers get duped with subpar LCD panel compared to the other half, while paying the same.

Apple has been in that boat before in the past, when LG displays were lagging behind Samsung panels and people literally got duped with getting a product with a LG panel.
But that was long ago and LG has come a long way. Their OLED TV's are among the best at the moment (for example). I absolutely love mine.

Re: PSA: DBrand's Switch 2 'Killswitch' Dock Adapter's 'Seamless Docking' Apparently Isn't Quite Seamless

Jeronan

@RaeDawnChonglingBay Pfewww thanks for the insight, as I have the Killswitch 2 on order, as the Switch 2 really hurts for me in handheld, due to my big hands.
So I was really looking forward to the grips that come with the KillSwitch 2 package.

Can I use the Joy-Con grips only from the KillSwitch2 package? Then docking would be a non-issue, since I am only interested in better grips for a more comfortable handheld experience.

Re: Video: Switch 2's GameCube Emulation Apparently Has Underlying Issues Nintendo "Desperately Needs To Fix"

Jeronan

@Medic_alert Which could have been avoided if Nintendo had pulled their fingers out of their behinds and just re-release the HD version on the Switch consoles!

Both HD remakes of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were done so well and it's quite mind boggling as to why they still haven't been ported over.
They deserve to be ported over, so a vastly larger audience can experience these excellent games in HD!

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

Jeronan

@spacely_sprockets You can address this a bit with adjusting the screen brightness a bit down.

A lot of games set the default brightness too high and on LCD you should run a lower brightness, so not everything looks all washed out. You get better color representation too, when the brightness is a bit lower.

You learn this very quickly when doing Photo editing on an LCD screen, even a fully color calibrated High end screen like I have at home. Setting the brightness correctly is vital to get accurate color representation.

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

Jeronan

@Monkeido The problem is that VRR capable OLED screens are still too expensive.

So it's going to take a good while before we will see an OLED Switch 2.
The prices on VRR OLED panels need to come down enough first.

It's a good reason why Nintendo went with a LCD screen again with the Switch 2. They clearly saw VRR as a more important benefit than sticking with OLED.

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

Jeronan

I think the problem is that both the free and paid upgrades were just rushed updates to have them ready before the Switch 2 release and why we see these issues with VRR and DLSS.

I remember reading that Nintendo was incredibly slow and late with delivering Switch 2 dev kits and that some still don't have them?

If this welcome tour demonstrates full VRR and DLSS capabilities, it's just a matter of time until we see it in the games as well.

VRR is also still kind of new, so it will take time for Devs to get fully familiar with it and make full use of its capabilities.

Re: Minecraft's Nintendo Players Request "Switch 2 Edition" After Graphics Update Skips Switch

Jeronan

It's very strange as the original Switch edition had been upgraded/replaced with Bedrock a good long while ago?

I can understand the current Switch 1 can't handle the GFX update.
So I hope it will just be a matter of time for a Switch 2 upgrade patch to this latest bedrock version.

Either way. It's kind of a strange oversight, as they surely knew the Switch 2 would be released by now and today's update should have included the Switch 2.

Re: Review: Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster (Switch 2) - A Solid Refresh For A 3DS RPG Gem

Jeronan

@Vyacheslav333 Yep. This is as lazy as a port can be. It looks absolutely horrid. Especially considering they could have easily ported the PC version, which looks 10 times better.

The audacity to make it a Switch 2 exclusive and still look this bad and outdated, it could have easily run on the Switch 1 too. But I guess they got some nice extra cash from Nintendo to make it a Switch 2 exclusive.

Re: Pokémon Fan Loses "20 Years Worth Of Data" After Performing Switch 2 Transfer

Jeronan

@shoeses Even so. Pokemon Home isn't just a replacement for Cloud saves.

You can store all your Pokemon from all your games there and then also seamlessly transfer them between the different games.
Enabling Cloud saves is not going to replace that feature.
So there will always be a place for Pokemon Home regardless, as it's a single convenient place to store all your "precious" Pokemon collected from the different games.
Also handy when you want to delete your save to start over a game for a new playthrough.

Re: Pokémon Fan Loses "20 Years Worth Of Data" After Performing Switch 2 Transfer

Jeronan

@Ramouz The problem is Pokemon trading. People can trade away rare Pokemon, then quickly closing the game and reload the cloud save. As that is how all Cloud saves work on all platforms (Sony, XBox and Nintendo).
This delay and ability to download a cloud save has saved me more than on one occasion.
So I would not want this delay "feature" with Cloud saves changed!
But with the Pokemon games this is an issue that can be too easily exploited.

That is why we have Pokemon Home (which stores everything in cloud and why you pay a very small subscription fee).
It's a foolproof system that constantly forces you to save after each transfer, so people can't cheat and create duplicates of ultra rare Pokemon, Shinies, Legendaries, Mythicals, etc.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 2 Controllers

Jeronan

You might want to update your affiliate link of the 8bitdo controller. It points to the XBOX/PC version, as Nintendo controllers have the A and B buttons reversed, compared to other platforms.

Re: Pokémon Fan Loses "20 Years Worth Of Data" After Performing Switch 2 Transfer

Jeronan

@sanderev Just like the other poster (and I have s****ed on Game Freak and Nintendo plenty enough), but Pokemon Home, just like Bank is a justified paid service and a ridiculously cheap one at that.

Without Home (and before that Pokebank), this article wouldn't exist, as all Pokemon would have been stuck forever in each their own games and you would never have been able to keep all your collected Pokemon, Shinies, Legendaries, etc and able to restart a new save in a game, without losing everything. Other than go through an atrocious process of transferring each and every Pokemon manually one by one to a trusted friend playing the same game and willing to sacrifice hours of his/her time.

Pokemon Home is a Cloud storage service for all your "precious" Pokemon from all available Pokemon games on the system and also allow you transfer Pokemon between each and every game.
It's a unique and great service that is not available for any other game. The Yokai Watch games didn't have this option. The Digimon games didn't have this option. Etc.

You also not obligated to use it. If you don't care about your Pokemon and don't care about wiping them for a new playthrough, like you do with Yo-kai Watch and the Digimon games for example. Then don't use Home and don't pay for it.
Simple as that.
It's a perfectly valid way of playing the Pokemon games and there are plenty of people that just play through the game's story, do the gyms, etc and are then done with the game and wait till the next game.
Not everyone is willing to spend hours upon hours hunting shinies and legendaries or IV min/maxing their Pokemon, etc.
A lot of people don't care about that at all and thus have no need whatsoever to ever use Pokemon Home.

Re: Pokémon Fan Loses "20 Years Worth Of Data" After Performing Switch 2 Transfer

Jeronan

@RainbowGazelle Pokemon Home is just like the old Pokebank, which was also a paid service.

It's a separate service, as you can store ALL your Pokemon from ALL your Pokemon games on the system in one convenient app and has the ability to seamlessly transfer Pokemon between each game.

It's worth paying 5 dollars per 3 months for this.

And if you decide to take a break for a year or two. Stop paying for that period. You can't access your Pokemon in Pokemon Home during that time, but they will still be there when you start paying again.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Nintendo Switch 2

Jeronan

@Kidfunkadelic83 When was this? As I didn't buy the Portal until like few months ago, after Sony finally released a firmware update (back in late November I think) that added Cloud streaming next to PS5 remote play!

That was a huge improvement and makes the Portal significantly more usable. It should have been this way since day 1.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Nintendo Switch 2

Jeronan

@Kidfunkadelic83 I got the Switch 2, but not double dipping on Cyberpunk 2077.
Since I have the PS Portal too and it works great! With full graphics fidelity. Something even the Switch 2 simply wouldn't be able to do. Especially handheld mode.

And if you have a small light laptop or tablet, together with XBOX GamePass Ultimate. XBox Cloud streaming works excellent these days.

Of course, if you are on holiday in some remote location with terrible internet WiFi, then a full dedicated handheld like the Switch is still king.
But how often are we in such situation? and shouldn't we do something else most of the time when on holiday in some remote resort?
