Re: Arena of Valor - China's Megahit MOBA Shines On Nintendo Switch

Gibb

Ok I read the review, now I know that AoV is a MOBA and that the Switch port works well. Fair enough.
I would have been really interested in the finer details of the game itself, though. I've played an awful lot of Heroes of Newerth (another MOBA) and would like to know things like:

Is gold gained from hero kills awarded to the whole team? Are there wards of sight? A jungle? A boss monster? Can towers be repaired / healed? Is there equipment?

An awful lot of questions unanswered...

Re: Video: What Can We Hope for and Expect from the Delayed Nintendo Direct?

Gibb

So much negativity here... I for one have more games than I can play (I downloaded but still haven't even started Hollow Knight, Golf Story, Count of Lucanor, Mario and Rabbids) even though I spend between 30 and 40 hours / week gaming and there are so many BRILLIANT titles on the horizon. I couldn't be happier with the Switch.

Concerning the Direct, we'll probably see Pkmn Let's Go!, some Smash (go Dr. Wily, Octopath Travelers and Rex!) and I think it's very likely that we get a few more glimpses of Fire Emblem (since that releases in early 2019). Also I have the vague feeling we might be positively surprised to get a Metroid Prime collection in HD.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

Gibb

@Spookypatrol Thanks for your in-depth reply. Yeah I'm sure I'm watching a great game right now and the problem is (as usual ^^) on the user end of things. But I find it very weird that a developer puts so much time and effort to craft a magnificent game, yet fails to put in some standard quality of life changes. Also it is beyond me how one can publish such a horrible demo. The gameplay I'm watching right now looks WAY better than anything I saw in the demo and things are actually getting explained (if you wish) via tutorials and training missions. That's what I was looking for in the demo.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

Gibb

I'm pretty torn on whether I should get it or not. I was certain to buy day1 because I've heard so many good things about MH, but the demo was one of the worst video game experiences I've ever made... Slow, clunky, unfun, super-short time limits that count down while you're trying to adjust the horrible controls to a somewhat playable state, monsters are nearly double your speed and extremely hard to hit or even catch up to, zero explanation on how you should do anything...
TL;DR the demo was horrible.
I'm watching my flatmate play right now and maybe I'll give it a second try. But gosh that demo was groce.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 25th)

Gibb

Daily doses of Splatoon2 (next goal: X-rank in tower control, I'm so close ), finishing chapter 4 for all characters in Octopath when offline and some Minecraft couch co-op because it's one of the most devious timesinkers of all time - seriously sometimes I wish I hadn't started the game up to understand what my clients were playing at the time. ^^
Will probably go back to Mega Man X Legacy collection at some point because I want to complete it, but the art style of X4 somehow turns me off. Also have resisted to buy Dead Cells so far, but I'll fail that saving throw soon enough...

Re: A New Set Of Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Videos Showcase Different Pokémon Battle Animations

Gibb

@Tulio517 You didn't sound like a hater and I believe your concerns to be well founded. I'd love to be positively surprised by some news announcement for the Let's Go-series, but I will probably enjoy the games, even if there won't be any. Also I agree with some of the comments above about the lackluster Pidgeot animation...

Still, nobody has played the full game yet, so let's go (pun intended) see what they have in store for us. Look at all the negative comments about Smash Ultimate (lazy port, nothing new, cashgrab, etc.) in the past, before the last Smash Direct aired. Suddenly a lot of those people have changed their minds because of the new information that has come to light - perhaps a similar thing will happen with this pkmn-outing (even though Smash Ultimate seems like a much more ambitious project). Worst case scenario: The game is going to be as crappy as many people fear it will be and we'll get a - hopefully (but I'm very confident) - great new mainline title in 2019.

Re: A New Set Of Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Videos Showcase Different Pokémon Battle Animations

Gibb

Animations are alright - not what I would've hoped for, but good enough. What I'm really curious about are the game mechanics: Will there be Z-moves? Online battles? Bank connectivity at some point? Will they gradually add gen 2 - 7 with DLC's until the Gen8 main line title launches?
We'll probably find out soon enough in a dedicated PKMN-direct in September, which I look forward to.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 11th)

Gibb

Playing Mega Man X3 as part of the legacy collection for the first time (finished X2 a few days ago) and am surprised how hard I find the game to be, especially because I played X to death on the SNES and found it to be very easy. It's getting easier now I get to know the bosses, weapons and upgrades though...
Also I FINALLY reached X-rank (Splat Zones) in Splatoon2 yesterday, so I'm prepared to get my butt kicked back into S+9 again.
If I find time - unlikely as it is - I'd like to finish a few of the 4th chapters in Octopath Traveler too, since I've only completely seen Ophelia's story so far. Happy gaming y'all!

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct Livestream Coming This Wednesday

Gibb

He has the craftiest inventions. He has the most devious plans to turn tools into weapons and rule the world (again). He has the haircut to end all style battles.

Dr. Wily joins the fight!

Gosh I would love Dr. Wily to be a new fighter. Hyped for the presentation (although Dr. W. won't ever make it into the roster).
My guess for new fighters are (with some being a lot less likely than others):
Rex (+ xc2 related assist trophies)
Spring Man (with Ribbon Girl as Echo)
LABO robot
Gengar (Clefable as Echo)
Octopath Travelers (all 8 as 1 fighter)
Funky Kong
Octoling (Echo for Inkling)

My guess for game modes:
Adventure/story mode for single player and co-op akin to subspace emissary.
All-star
Arena (100-man melee etc.)
Online tournament spectator mode
And maybe something entirely new.

Also I'll be enjoying this direct and the next one, that will inevitably come at some point within the next 2 months. Bunch of very weird people / trolls here.

Re: E3 2018: Here's When The Nintendo Direct E3 2018 Takes Place And How You Can Watch

Gibb

@holygeez03 This. So much.

Also I know NL sits in Great Britain, but I needed to google what BST means - would it have killed you to also add the EST since the whole point of this article is to inform readers about when the E3-direct is going to take place?
I used to frequent this site a lot more, but the quality has gone steeply downhill (typos, irrelevant articles, presenting rumours as guides to get more clicks and so on) in the last year or so. I find this very disappointing, because I liked the site a lot - now I only come here for the comments rather than the articles (news get reported a lot faster on other sites).

Re: Review: Legend Of Kay Anniversary (Switch)

Gibb

@ottospooky @VIIIAxel Yeah I've noticed that too. I may be a little picky, but hey. I generally check other sites for news (since they report them so much earlier) and come to NL for the comments mostly.

@ottospooky Then maybe his attempt at humour just goes over my head. I always thought he just makes an awful lot of mistakes.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Gibb

Normally would be fighting hard to effin go get that X-rank in Splatoon2 (friggin 800+ hours and still only S+5 in Tower and Splat Zones, but my hopes of getting there keep diminishing), but I'm on a trip to Hamburg and Berlin so that means more time for all those lovely Mega Man games. Beat 1-3 so far and I keep finding little things that seem new to me (even though they obviously aren't) and I'm really looking forward to play 6, 8 and 10 because I never got to try those so far.
Also should continue my Gunvolt2 save (and finally get gud at it) because this game is just so good. Same as Shovel Knight (currently Specter of Torment). And Wonder Boy remake from the 50% sale is still waiting to be finished (just unlocked Lion).
I'll also finish XC2 (currently at around 200 hours) when I get home and can dock the Switch again.
Too many amazing games on this hybrid console. And yes I spend WAY to much time on it.
Gah, only about a month left until Octopath releases and I have SO much to finish and try out before that... good times.

Re: Rumour: Ridley, Ice Climbers And Simon Belmot To Join The Super Smash Bros Roster

Gibb

Just put in Dr. Wily or Proto Man already...

As to the rumour: How does that leaking thing work exactly? Does this 'Vergeben' person just start a rumour? Because there was no sources given, not even some sort of logical reasoning behind the 'leak'. Sounds pretty fishy.

Also typos in the article (and title), but that's hardly news when you look who wrote it.

Re: The Mega Man Animated Series Will Be Called Mega Man: Fully Charged

Gibb

"Aki Light is a regular, upbeat, robot schoolboy"
I think I threw up a little when I read the first sentence there. Why? God...
Might be something for kids who don't know who Mega Man is an what the original story is about. But gah! Disgusting adaption of the source material. I don't like the art-style either. Oh well, no problem, plenty of Mega Man goodness coming this year.

Re: Review: Attack On Titan 2 (Switch)

Gibb

A pity that the review doesn't mention the game's music and sound design at all. Is it good? Is there voiceover in the cutscenes and / or fights? How long did it take you to finish the game's main story? Is there anything to do after you finish it? How is the difficulty of the game? Is there a theatre / gallery mode? Achievements? So many questions unanswered... guess I need to read another review. A pity.
@Dom Also for the love of holy grammar please start proof-reading your articles (or let some intern or a colleague do it), because this is - in my opinion - highly embarrassing.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Details About Rank X In Splatoon 2

Gibb

Sounds good to me! I like the limited map rotation - makes it easier to play the maps well.

Current ranks:
Splat zones: S+1
Tower control: S+2
Rainmaker: S+3
Clam blitz: S+0

Will be a long and rocky road for me, but maybe I got a chance to rank up in at least one mode. definitely looking forward to the update.

Re: A New Splatoon 2 Update Will Soon Allow Players To Rise To 'Rank X'

Gibb

Wow. Just wow. Great direct in general and I'm immensely pumped for the Splatoon2-update. How can I finish XC2 while practicing enough to reach that X-rank? Not even sure if I can make it tbh... just like the 2 posters above, I never got higher than S+3. I'm up for a challenge though. Happy splatting, see you in S+ for probably a long while.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Top Ten eShop Games From Switch's First Year

Gibb

This article is extremely similar to the other one that listed the favourite games of the NL staff. The difference here is, that it's clear you meant indie-titles (since it's explained in the title and article) and the poll options list all the games mentioned in the article. A "something else" category would've been needed, but it's not a big deal - that's what the comment section is there for. Way better.
On topic, I voted for Floor Kids because the game surprised me. I love Stardew Valley and Binding of Isaac (and put way too many hours into both of them), but I was completely charmed by Floor Kids' presentation and gameplay.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Life's Favourite Games From Switch's First Year

Gibb

The article's title is pretty misleading and I find the poll to be severely lacking (not including a game that is presented in the article seems lazy, but at least the article isn't full of typos again). Including a "something else" category makes a lot of sense, but only if you add the biggest contenders for "personal GOTY" in the poll - otherwise it will just be the biggest category by default.
But I like the idea of seeing which games people liked most. So here we go, my personal top-5:

1.) Splatoon 2 (720 hours)
2.) Zelda BOTW (210 hours)
3.) Mario Odyssey (55 hours)
4.) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (40 hours)
5.) Arms (60 hours)

Other games I've immensely enjoyed were Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Binding of Isaac, Shovel Knight, Gunvolt (1, 2 & Burst), Street Fighter II, Floor Kids and Darkest Dungeon.
It was a great year to be a gamer, the Switch really made my last year so much more bearable. So big thanks to Nintendo, here's to another 30 years of providing me and so many other people with fun and making lives a little bit better.
