Earlier this month, we shared a set of videos from the Official Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel which showed how different types of Pokémon follow the trainer in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. Now, the channel has uploaded another set of videos showing off various monsters taking part in battles, with one even demonstrating a double battle scenario.
Firstly, we have a really short video showing Magikarp in action, presumably using its Splash attack to do literally nothing at all, before being the subject of Machoke's Seismic Toss attack.
Next up is a battle between two Tauros, showing the same Hyper Beam move from both viewpoints, followed by a heated match between Pidgeot and Gloom.
And finally, we have more footage of Charizard evolving into Mega Charizard X in a match against an Exeggutor, followed by a battle where a single Paras is facing two mighty Fearow.
Seeing the Pokémon inside such a large, open display reminds us of the classic home console games like Pokémon Stadium on the N64, with the battle animations naturally seeing a decent HD overhaul in comparison to the latest mainline entries on 3DS.
Do you like the look of these battle sequences? Let us know your thoughts below.

I’m liking what I see! Can’t wait for release. I think the animations are pretty crisp, and maintains the feel of the old cartoon well.
looks... HD
Animations are alright - not what I would've hoped for, but good enough. What I'm really curious about are the game mechanics: Will there be Z-moves? Online battles? Bank connectivity at some point? Will they gradually add gen 2 - 7 with DLC's until the Gen8 main line title launches?
We'll probably find out soon enough in a dedicated PKMN-direct in September, which I look forward to.
@Gibb I wouldn't expect gen 2-7. I wouldn't expect a Pokémon Direct either. This games is probably gonna be as barebones as it looks. It does look pretty though.
The fights still seem really primitive, like they haven't evolved much since the original Pokémon games. That's not a big deal, but I'd really like to have them step it up in the 2019 game, where the battles are more cinematic and the pokémon don't make the stupid "electronic" noises.
I really hope the 2019 game is better than this one (looks). The battles still seem so disjointed, stiff, and archaic.
I used to be like, the biggest Pokémon fan. It’s been sad to see my interest in the series gradually dwindle to near nonexistence over the past 20 years.
I want to love Pokémon again but they aren’t putting much effort into winning me back.
im so excited to play Let's Go! I'm picking up both games and 6 Pokepluses x)
This game looks and sounds like Garbage from what I've heard and seen and it's not like I hate Pokémon games. I mean, it looks really really boring. Pokémon fans seems a bit desperate to actually be hyped for these games. Sry but that's my opinion.
Eh... It looks exactly like the 3DS game, but with better lighting and a higher resolution.
@Tulio517 It's a major release for Nintendo and the Pkmn-company - I'll reserve my judgment for the final product.
Do I want this game..? Erm. No. Will I probably buy it anyway? Yh, probably. I'm with a lot of folks on this, it just looks like a really shallow, boring and outdated Pokemon game. Sun and Moon I felt had plenty of personality, plenty of fresh little ideas and a nice world but this on the other hand just looks really really bland...
This actually looks like crap. These videos just about turned me off to the whole game. I never liked how disjointed battle animations were on the N64 this reminds me of that game. The pokemon also seem pretty lifeless much like those first 3d sprites way back when. It might just be me but pokemon look much better animated on the 3ds. Machoke's seismic toss looks so damn horrible. Unless you knew what the move actually does you'd never guess it's a grab move. Machoke hardly moves throughout the whole animation. I can't believe I'm saying this but I might actually pass on these tittles.
Animations are pretty disappointing to me. We shouldn't be satisfied with it being the same as it ever was but in higher resolution. In the clip with Pidgeot and Gloom, Pidgeots 2-turn fly-style move just had wings appear and fly off the screen, and then they flew back down and attacked gloom as pidgeot just sat in place. Why couldnt it have been pidgeot himself that flew above the field and attacked on the 2nd turn? There are no longer hardware limitations, this is just super lazy animating.. Disappointing.
@Gibb Fair enough, didn't want to sound like a hater, I'm a huge Pokemon fan, that's why I'm disappointed. But for real, don't expect it. First, there's no way they'd add over 600 hundred Pokemon in tiny Kanto alone, there's a certain balance to how many Pokemon appear per route. And it's even less likely that they'd add the actual regions. If the let's go games are successful, and let's be honest, they'll be, Junichi Masuda said in some interviews it could become it's own series, parallel to the more traditional games. Bank support will likely be just to bring Pokemon from let's go to the later games. That's my two cents on it. It's still going to be a major release.
I don't know what people are complaining about... Pokemon Moon/Sun was hideous, so this looks pretty good to me..
Hmm... not sure what to think about this. It doesn't look that great.
Pokémon was my favorite thing when I was 10-13 years old (around the time Gen 1 and 2 was around), but after the excellent GBA games, when the series entered the DS era, they kinda lost me. Sure, I've played some of the mainline games on DS and 3DS, but the magic is somewhat gone. Instead I've gone full retro and bought some of the spinoff games on GBC and GBA that I never owned as a kid, like Pokémon Pinball and Pokémon Trading Card Game, and I have had a blast with them. Great stuff!
But I will see how the Let's Go-games end up. Maybe I'll buy one of them. But I'm putting my hopes on the 2019 mainline game, I want it to be revolutionizing the series.
Wow. The more I see, the less I seem to care. I'm happy for people that like this, but I really am not into it.
@LexKitteh That wasn't Fly, Gloom hurt Pigeot while it was charging. It could be a new move because I can't think of another 2 turn Flying move.
@nessisonett Sky Attack?
@nessisonett The move was Sky Attack, called "God Bird" in the Japanese. But the complaint still stands that moves that should cause the Pokemon to move around the field have cheap animations while the Pokemon stands in place. I understand in previous games, with 800 different mons, making all the animations can seem daunting, but they only have the first 151 here. They could have worked on animating these properly and used that work moving forward in the series.
This somehow looks worse and less lively than the 3DS ones. Likely because it’s those same assets being blown up into HD with next to nothing added. Looks really bad and certainly nothing to show off. Hopefully next years looks better than this
How come they didn't include Pikachu's amazing, groundbreaking Double Kick animation?

@hatch I think that’s the best summation of the idea I’ve read. I think it’s easy for some folks to forget the going from Pokémon Go to a DS entry for the first time ever can be a bit daunting for the non-core. This can help bridge the gap and draw in a bigger audience for 2019
Looks like every 3DS game.
I know we've been buying everything with Pikachu's face on it without question but I'm still surprised by how little effort is put into this "first home console entry".
Yep, hatch summed this one up. This isn't meant to be an overhaul of pokemon but instead the merging of Pokemon GO with the mainline series. The models and animations are being largely taken from Pokemon Go. The only reason this game exists is to try and lure the large Pokemon Go population to the switch before they release the next core entry. It's a sales driver, and should be fairly good for those that accept what Pokemon GO is.
@Tulio517 You didn't sound like a hater and I believe your concerns to be well founded. I'd love to be positively surprised by some news announcement for the Let's Go-series, but I will probably enjoy the games, even if there won't be any. Also I agree with some of the comments above about the lackluster Pidgeot animation...
Still, nobody has played the full game yet, so let's go (pun intended) see what they have in store for us. Look at all the negative comments about Smash Ultimate (lazy port, nothing new, cashgrab, etc.) in the past, before the last Smash Direct aired. Suddenly a lot of those people have changed their minds because of the new information that has come to light - perhaps a similar thing will happen with this pkmn-outing (even though Smash Ultimate seems like a much more ambitious project). Worst case scenario: The game is going to be as crappy as many people fear it will be and we'll get a - hopefully (but I'm very confident) - great new mainline title in 2019.
I just can't get over how mediocre the game looks. Similar to my feelings when I saw X and Y for the first time I know Pokemon can look better and this cell phone-quality graphics are off-putting especially on a system that can pull off Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
There's a lot of negativity towards this game but to be honest I liked it. After reading the comments above I do agree the animations could do with a lot more work but I did like the fast pace of the battles, so much better than Pokemon Stadium on the N64 which was really slow.
Is it too much to ask for a Pokemon using fly to, I don't know, fly?
Overall feels like a step down from Battle Revolution, which was ten years ago.
@TommyTendo @LexKitteh Ahh ok thanks, I totally blanked about that move.
This is Pokemon Stadium integrated into a Pokemon game, I love it.
I feel like they could have just re used all the animations from the 3DS games and put it in HD. That would like much better than these videos imo. Dont get me wrong, I have both and a pokeball plus preordered but .....
@Seacliff That's not fly.
About what I expected. With so many moves in the game, it would be a crazy task to make everything unique. Though I do wish when a move missed, it would show Pokemon jumping out of the way or the attack going to the side or something.
As for the models, they are certainly nicer than the 3DS, no question there. But this cartoony art style I suspect deliberately leaves off some detain that would have been there, if we were using old school sprites.
Imagine if we got an Octopath Traveller inspired HD-2D Pokemon game. Something in the vane of Black and White, with fully animated HD sprites, rather than XY style 3D models. I think I'd prefer that. I can dream.
Ugh... I don't know how GF keeps on surpassing their own garbage levels.
with this being a deviation from the main titles I really wish they had the balls to remove turn-based combat and replace it with a pokken style system where you can dodge run jump and make it feel like the anime. i understand that would have added to development time though.
@Dramlin The models and animations in GO are from the 3DS games. Isn't it better to know what you're talking about BEFORE you start ranting?
@Gibb you're right. I'll give it a chance for what it is
@-Juice- I think there's a misunderstanding based on my poor wording. I'm not stating that the models/animations are originating from Pokemon go, only that they are intended to match Pokemon Go exactly.
