Take all the time you need, TC! Plenty of great games to play in the meantime, and you guys are perfectionists, go for it! It’ll come when it’s ready, and I’m hopeful that it’ll be something special
@MPWolfie you can get it physical, with full EFIGS+ support, one and done. You don’t need a region-specific account to get patches. But just because I’m curious , what would be the problem about having a US specific account? And when you delete a game, you can archive it (the icon stays) and then you’re just a click away from redownloading, whatever account you’re currently using. I’ve done since 2017, changed 3 Switches, no issues whatsoever.
Amazing game. Brilliant port. Fantastic support. Honestly, if you didn’t play it already on a different platform, and value portability , this is absolutely a must-have for every Switch’s library. As far AAA 3rd party ports go, I find this the best as a game/port combo (I personally hate Alien Isolation’s severe deadzone and input lag, I know others don’t mind, too bad)
Btw, this review was a pleasure to read, one of the best I’ve ever seen on NL. Competent in discerning the technicalities (btw thanks for confirming the scanlines filter’s 4 degrees of intensity) and in discussing the art, gameplay mechanics, the intent of Tengo Project, what made the original magical and how this one compares, touched on difficulty and longevity, it had it all. It touched on everything I wanted to know, as a man in his forties who’s enamored with the series and with Tengo’s “remakesters”. You didn’t mention the framerate, and maybe you could’ve given it a few words, but I’m pretty sure it means that it’s locked 60 most of the times. Great job @Tom-Massey
Tengo Project is the absolute KING of 2D remaster/remakes, they nailed it outta the park with every release so far.
Ninja Saviors doesn’t get enough clout, imo it’s easily on par with SOR4, it’s a great, replayable, amazin-looking, way deeper than it seems, beat ‘em up!
Wild Guns Reloaded is absolutely stunning (minus the mandatory sharing of lives’ pool in mp! That sucks!).
This is going be a very looooong and hard wait -_- but I just can’t justify 45€ (either digital or physical, that’s what is going to cost me when all is said and done… I wish I had a japanese credit card to grab it straight from the eShop). Especially because I can get the western version for a good 17€ less than that.
@Gamer_Zeus lmao it’s pretty obvious you should inform yourself better on how game dev works and costs. If you think SMTV is a true AAA production with high-end budgeting I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve worked in the industry for close to 20 years, nodoby here knows the budget for SMTV but if you truly think it costed over 40M I don’t know what to tell you. There is no way it costed anything close to 80M, zero chance. 1M in 6 months on a single platform for this release is, without a doubt, a smashing success. The fact that the game might get ported to other platforms (for sure it’s coming to PC) later doesn’t mean anything, the same would have happened if it sold 5M. Doesn’t seem you have much of a grasp on the industry, sales and development/publishing.
@twztid13 how is that relevant? SMT V is an exclusive game. Soul Hackers 2 is not. @BloodyMurder lmao what? They’ve already more than recouped their money already, this is by a huuuge margin the best selling entry in the series.
Fantastic sales for a great game, it’ll double or close the 2nd best entry when all is said and that just with NSW’s sales. I’m sure the game will also perform well when the PC version release (assuming Steam and not ES exclusiveness). Might even triple SMTIV’s LTD with a well done pc port.
There is a licensing reason. They were also able to make the DLC region-free. The bundle includes the translation and is 1$ more. I don’t think there is a physical release here (iirc) but it’s hardly the first game where translations are tied to DLC (free tho). Rotlf and sad at the guy saying this was a bit racist hahahaha c’mon. Anyway the publisher should’ve disclosed the reason for this and be clear instead of going silent. I don’t think they’ll lose any sales for this, but they’ve handled it horribly.
edit: Looks at review score: Oh wait it’s 7/10… for some reason I was sure it had been scored 6/10. I agree with the score then (add 1 point if you’re into retro racers like I am) tho the review is way too harsh imo.
——
I’m glad I went ahead and disregarded this review, I bought this and I think that it’s a great little game, and different than the other attempts at “retro” 2d arcade racing. Definitely prefer SS to Horizon Chase Turbo (tho I haven’t tried the Senna expansion). Only thing I agree with is that the soundtrack is disappointing and a more memorable soundtrack would have made the experience better. It’s designed with 80/90s arcade sensibilities in mind, meant to be replayed a ton, and while I think you can still get further and shave those corners even without knowing every inch, you do need to learn the tracks and how far to push on the gas/drift for the harder turn-to-turn segments. exactly like with Outrun. I’m really enjoying it, and with better backgrounds variety/flair for the various stages (which basically have a theme and just repeat those tiles for the whole stage 90% of the time) and soundtrack, it would’ve been even better. Considering the price, if you like Yu Suzuki’s racing output I feel safe in recommending it!
Also, who gives a hoot about the Sonic references so much as to bash the game so hard because of that, for several lines even, in a review like this? C’mon.
Will definitely check it out once some harder difficulty/hardcore mode update drops. I’ve learned that I’m more likely to be able to enjoy a game that is perhaps too difficult (but fair) than something devoid of challenge. It’s the reason the only Kirby games I’ve truly enjoyed are the Paintbrush/Canvas duo. I get bored if I’m not challenged gameplay-wise. But definitely on my radar! Nice review.
I’m really looking forward to this release, however, the price is steep compared to all other previous remaster by Squenix if the only new things are the graphics and qol changes. Is this a full on remake? What else has been changed? Does it “only” have the og SFC soundtrack or has it been re-arranged and recorded, what about gameplay fixes/improvemts? Any extra content?
@zbinks Trojan is already in Stadium 1 (JPN-only rom so different name).
Anyway, surely and hopefully (most wanted, excluding super unlikely licensed stuff like Punisher, AvP, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs etc.):

@CharlieGirl n1 reason is that it’s obviously easier to market, to generate more interest in both releases, to get new reviews, and maybe there is also a technical reason with RE engine.
The second best thing about this announcement is that this means we’ll get at least the first 2 games re-released on modern platforms and hopefully the 3rd one after Return comes out.
I’m so happy 🥲 I already don’t like the artstyle (love the 3 games’ looks, and I think 2 and 3 both look absolutely incredible in their own way) but I’ll keep an open mind… I would’ve signed for this blindly and I’m sure it’ll look good in the end. RG at the helm on a new SOMC, incredible… best gaming news ever. Now gimme Zac MacKracken 2!
Are you not reviewing this? This is a great game, and the 00 super spy power fantasy sadly doesn’t have many (if any) titles of its ilk out there. But seriously, please give a spotlight to hidden gems
It’s a bummer you guys didn’t review this, I keep hearing how it’s an undiscovered gem and most definitely Microids’ best published title (not that hard to believe considering their output lol). But again, it’s disappointing because it’s at least something different than you didn’t see before on Switch.
OMG YEAHHHHH YES YES YES!!! I had given up hope, hopefully there are also optional packs as DLC for the first wrapper, but I’m so happy either way.
Besides the obvious high profile requests, please include Gun Smoke, Last Duel, Mars Matrix, and The Speed Rumbler
@KnightRider666 @CharlieGirl i’ve had the game for almost a week actually. Grabbed it from the polish eShop. It’s a neat little game that I’m quite nostalgic over (arcade version, not the NES port).
Don’t really care for Wonder Momo although it clearly inspired Kamiya’s seminal Viewtiful Joe which I’d love to see ported to modern systems even tho I still have 1&2 on Gamecube and the NDS game.
@AtlanteanMan actually they didn’t break the streak because there was an ACA release this week too, maybe it didn’t come out in your eShop region? It’s Seibu Kaihatsu’s Empire City 1931 and I like it quite a bit, played a ton back in the old days at the arcade. Currently in the leaderboards (High Score mode of course) top 10!
I hate the new artstyle, yet another case of monkey paw, sigh. Not every release of this ilk can be as glorious as Tengo Project’s work but this looks like a 2D/3D conversion gone wrong where they applied an early 2000’s “Eagle 2x” filter 🤢🤢 I thought M2 bought all of Toaplan’s licenses and library? Well, looks like the og arcade version isn’t included, and while it’d be glorious I sure don’t wanna see a $60 Snow Bros M2 compilation with a gazillion ported versions, gimme Hamster’s ACA or even included as a bonus (with online leaderboards) with this release would suffice :,-(
Called it (like many did). Either they have something big cooked up for fall season, or for the love of god have it launch with a more powerful… something (hate this chips shortage). I dunno, between this delay that we all saw coming or at least speculated on, and MK8DX last booster pack, something’s cooking imo. Dunno what but, something. Please spare me from the bad takes that “it’s because of Elden Ring”, seen that already and my eyes fell on the floor they were rolling so fast
@Savino yes, they’re taken from the teaser trailer which has been captured on docked Switch.
I hope the crashing physics have remained fully intact and not introduced a bunch of pre-determined destructions, and do whatever they need (like reducing the numbers of cars on track) to hit locked 30. It’s too bad that these “impossible” ports never have demos. After Dying Light (amazing) my standards for these ports are a bit higher.
@Rambler “ This guy hasn't implemented it either.” I never said they did? Read my post again, I was commenting on your assumption that Sakurai could go either way but decided that delay-based netcode works best, from a gameplay perspective for Smash Bros and to make the experience as lag-free as possible; That ain’t the case, Sora and Bandai Namco simply couldn’t work it out to implement rollback in an efficient way, but there’s no doubt whatsoever that given the budget (time and money) and coding talent, rollback is the way to go for any fighting game, and when I say any I mean every. @RennanNT explains it fairly well and in simple terms.
Considering Bamco couldn’t even put it in Tekken7, how Japanese devs have resisted rollback due to not really being familiar with it and not having the coding chops, I’m not surprised. Luckily this has changed and lately we’re seeing more and more japanese fighting games implement rollback and even patching it in for already released games: it’s that much important if you want an enjoyable and fair online Vs. experience.
@rambler Sakurai & co didn’t “decide” that delay-based netcode worked better than rollback, they just could not implement the latter. Rollback is better for fighting games stat, it’s factual, no “ifs and buts”. It’d be like saying microwaving food works better for cooking some dishes than live fire.
I seriously hope this isn’t 30fps or has at least a 60fps mode, Overkill was 30fps and thar ruined it for me, light gun games just aren’t the same and as fun with low framerate. I wish they’d realese a VR version to be honest…
@Snakesglowcaps I don’t get it, you’re saying that I’ve misunderstood who and what? 🤔 I was talking about myself… I love the concept and thibk it’s amazing work and the guys has incredible talent, but that thing would give me hand cramps after 10 minutes with its form factor
Amazing work. My hands hurt just by looking at the thing lol
@Matty1988 you remember wrong! Amazing console built for gaming, library, tech and controller (d-pad notwithstanding lol). Also inexpensive, especially in PAL land. Got mine at US launch with Wave Race BS, Rogue Squadron II and Luigi’s Mansion. ‘Twas a cozy gaming Christmas that year, yep!
@Teksetter the Arcade original is also on Switch via Hamster’s Arcade Archives, if you enjoy chasing high scores (don’t think the Egret II Mini will have anything resembling online leaderboards for the games afaik).
I don’t like arcade games collections anyway, I treat my retro arcade games as I was in front of a cab dropping quarters, I just want access to a game as quickly as possible whenever I feel like having a go. Unless they are like Capcom Stadium Arcade which I wish had been a success and released new DLC, sigh
@HamatoYoshi Rod Land is available already on Switch as an Arcade Archives release. Original BB (available as a bonus in BB4F) and NZS are Taito’s. Also, Liquid Kids is available and y’all should buy it, it’s awesome
@GrailUK because its content is problematic, especially towards lgbtq people with its depiction of genders among many other unfortunate things that luckily we handle with different sensibilities now compared to 2006 (but that is still somehow “normal” in Japanese media, although change seems to be slowly coming there too and it’ll keep getting hopefully better because they are 10 years behind). Mind you, MOTHER 3 is a very special game to me and without a doubt one of my favorite of all time, and that is also thanks to its masterful fantranlation, I absolutely adore the story, the gameplay, the audiovisual, and how it handles being a “sequel”, but the script and plenty of sections do put Nintendo in a weird spot. I mean, I loved it so much that I own both the official jpn release and a repro-cart with the English patch on it, and I can’t see them ever releasing the game as it is (for god’s sake it would’ve happened by now, we got a freaking Famicom Detective Club localization!) while also knowing that changes would not sit well with the vast majority of the audience. It’s a burning hot potato to handle. I get wanting an official release, I do to and I’d pay good money for (one of the few games I’d pay for an uber expensive Collector’s Edition), but if you really are interested in playing this masterpiece then the fan-translation is of Treehouse’s quality and above 99% of what you find in official releases, it’s a labor of love by a team led by a renowned industry professional (Tomato) and it runs on a toaster. Its been available for 13 years, I’m sure by now if you’re really interested in Mother 3 then you have found a way to play it and can just look forward to a possible official release to own.
See what happens when BAMCO tries, Harada? Little Nightmares II NSW outsold the PS4 version 3:1 despite the franchise arriving way later (and with a price hike nontheless) on Switch and the series having “great gfx/atmosphere” as a dev focus and selling point, but when the port is good and there day 1 you get the numbers. Still ridiculous that no Soul Calibur port exists.
Great review. I’ve decided to not buy anything else from Inin until they fix (at least partially, currently they’re in unplayable state) the dumpster fire that were the 2 Saturn Tribute Cottons and Guardian Force, 45€ down the drain there…
Guardian Force is especially AMAZING and it’s a crime to leave it in such horrible state.
OMG I want it. Paddle for Arkanoid… I loved playing Arkanoid DS, Puzzle Bubble Galaxy and especially Space Invaders Extreme 1/2 with my Hori Paddle Controller for the Nintendo DS!
Too bad we’ll never get Marble Madness, Missile Command and Atari games on Arcade Archives to use that tasty trackball :/
While you’re at it, dear Hori, please release a proper D-pad Joycon WITH wireless capabilities so I can use one with Flip Grip. Modding a dpad to existing Left Joycons in place of the buttons feels awful.
Nintendo has been unfortunately awful at gate keeping bottom of the barrel asset flips that would look awful on Google Play since the WiiU days, that being said this dumpsterfire of a “game” is getting a few NOVAX moroons riled up on Twitter and reddit so its existence is worth it just to expose the sorry state of humanity and gets two thumbs up. Still, I get what they were going for, but they could’ve done without the “frogs making people gay - joke”
@FatWormBlowsASparky
I hate that BB arcade (super barebones with no online leader/scanlines/etc.) is still exclusive to the kinda horrid BB4F (and Baron is back expansion/rerelease) game… there’s also an Arcade Archives version that has been exclusive to the PS4 since… 2016 I think.
I’d easily pay $50 to get an M2 done collection with BB/SBB/NES Bubble Bobble 2/Rainbow Island/Parasol Stars/Bubble Symphony.
og Sega/Westone/Escape ‘s arcade Wonder Boy is even worse, the ACA release is exclusive to JPN PS4, and instead we got the awful Wonder Boy Returns/Remix+.
These two have been on my Most Wanted wishlist for almost 6 years, lol
Anyway, everyone go get Hamster/TAITO ACA LIQUID KIDS! It’s delightful and a good way to show there’s an audience for this releases!
@riccyjay You’re definitely mistaken, every DDPR guide worth its salt, or any player familiar with the game really, will tell you that Hyper Mode’s bullet canceling is survival’s main mechanic and fundamental if you want to beat the game without credit feeding a lot.
On the 1st loop (I doubt that someone playing for survival is so good at the game to even rach 2nd loop easily, and when you do you’ll have improved and refined your skills so it’s a non-issue) the hyper rank resets at every stage and it also goes back to 1 eveytime you die. It’s also unlikely that on stage 4/5 a survive player will raise their hyper rank so fast while also getting close to full chaining the stages that the hyperrank will make buller super fast and suggest a different tactic to survive than HM bullets canceling… and if it were to happen, then you’re scoring great and also getting lives, so by dying you just get back to rank1 of HM.
The game is completely built around chaining and hm bullet challenging and unless you want to get to end by clicking in continue a bunch of times you need to learn that. It’s probably the easiest CAVE stg ever as far as playing for survival goes.
@Gwynbleidd it’s 100% going to require an additional download. Revelations alone with DLC was 9GB and that was on PS3. Ezio Collection without patches is circs 38GB on PS4/Xbox. Even if Ubisoft uses only PS3 assets (hopefully they won’t, I’m positive it’ll be a port of the Ezio Trilogy and not of the 3 og releases) a 16GB cart would not be enough and they sre not going to pay for a 32GB cart.
I think the worst thing is its eShop banner, with that art and the name only in japanese it won’t attract anyone who isn’t already looking for it.
The game is incredible, just remember that to learn and survive you should start with choosing Strong type for your ship. Build combo/hyper mode, engage hyper mode to bullet cancel and try to keep your combo/hyper up, use it, build it again rinse and repeat. When you learn how to do that efficiently, as far surviving goes it’s one of the easier DDP and Cave games out there.

Re: Dying Light Switch Patch Includes "A Number Of Tweaks, Updates, And New Features"
@MPWolfie you can get it physical, with full EFIGS+ support, one and done. You don’t need a region-specific account to get patches. But just because I’m curious , what would be the problem about having a US specific account? Please spare me from the bad takes that “it’s because of Elden Ring”, seen that already and my eyes fell on the floor they were rolling so fast
Re: Wreckfest Screeches Onto Switch Later This Year
@Savino yes, they’re taken from the teaser trailer which has been captured on docked Switch.
Re: Random: Smash Ultimate Rollback Netcode Mod "Proof Of Concept" Up And Running On Switch
Luckily this has changed and lately we’re seeing more and more japanese fighting games implement rollback and even patching it in for already released games: it’s that much important if you want an enjoyable and fair online Vs. experience.
Re: The Awesome Official Super Mario 64 Guide From 1996 Is Now Available Online
Awesome!! This is the kind of article I’m really grateful you’ve posted, thanks!
Re: Random: Smash Ultimate Rollback Netcode Mod "Proof Of Concept" Up And Running On Switch
Re: Here's A First Look At The House Of The Dead: Remake Physical Switch Release
I seriously hope this isn’t 30fps or has at least a 60fps mode, Overkill was 30fps and thar ruined it for me, light gun games just aren’t the same and as fun with low framerate. I wish they’d realese a VR version to be honest…
Re: Random: Console Modder Makes "Fake Portable GameCube" Mock-Up A Reality
@Snakesglowcaps I don’t get it, you’re saying that I’ve misunderstood who and what? 🤔 I was talking about myself… I love the concept and thibk it’s amazing work and the guys has incredible talent, but that thing would give me hand cramps after 10 minutes with its form factor
Re: Random: Console Modder Makes "Fake Portable GameCube" Mock-Up A Reality
Amazing work. My hands hurt just by looking at the thing lol
@Matty1988 you remember wrong! Amazing console built for gaming, library, tech and controller (d-pad notwithstanding lol). Also inexpensive, especially in PAL land. Got mine at US launch with Wave Race BS, Rogue Squadron II and Luigi’s Mansion. ‘Twas a cozy gaming Christmas that year, yep!
Re: Classic Puzzler 'Qix' Comes To Switch This Week
Yes, yes! C’mon! Now gimme an ACA for Konami’s Amidar.
Re: Pocky & Rocky Reshrined Available To Pre-Order Now
@Teksetter the Arcade original is also on Switch via Hamster’s Arcade Archives, if you enjoy chasing high scores (don’t think the Egret II Mini will have anything resembling online leaderboards for the games afaik).
Re: Review: Taito Milestones - An Oddly Meagre Collection Of Coin-Op Classics
Just get Qix on Arcade Archives stat!
Re: Toaplan's Coin-Op Classic 'Snow Bros.' Is Coming To Switch Later This Year
@HamatoYoshi Rod Land is available already on Switch as an Arcade Archives release. Original BB (available as a bonus in BB4F) and NZS are Taito’s. Also, Liquid Kids is available and y’all should buy it, it’s awesome
Re: Mother 3 Producer Would "Love To See" GBA Entry Receive A Worldwide Release
Re: Japan's Top 100 Best-Selling Video Games Of 2021, According To Famitsu
See what happens when BAMCO tries, Harada? Little Nightmares II NSW outsold the PS4 version 3:1 despite the franchise arriving way later (and with a price hike nontheless) on Switch and the series having “great gfx/atmosphere” as a dev focus and selling point, but when the port is good and there day 1 you get the numbers. Still ridiculous that no Soul Calibur port exists.
Re: Review: Cotton Fantasy - A Joyful, Mischievous, And Incredibly Varied Shmup
Great review.
I’ve decided to not buy anything else from Inin until they fix (at least partially, currently they’re in unplayable state) the dumpster fire that were the 2 Saturn Tribute Cottons and Guardian Force, 45€ down the drain there…
Guardian Force is especially AMAZING and it’s a crime to leave it in such horrible state.
Re: Hori Wants To Release A Retro Game Controller That Can Be Used To Play Hamster's Arcade Archives Series
Re: Review: SNK VS. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash - An Utterly Essential Card-Battler
Fantastic game, excellent port that hopefully gives us some new version in the future who knows, having online vs would’ve been killer.
Great review btw!
Re: Random: Pandemic Shooter's eShop Page Makes You Wonder If Anyone At Nintendo Checks These Things
Re: Goku Fans Can Now Download A "Free Demo" Of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot On Switch
Lol I thought this “news” was about a new and different demo… this one has been available for ages… such a timely news! 😝
Re: Bub Is Back! Taito Is Developing A New Puzzle Bobble Game
@FatWormBlowsASparky
Re: Mini Review: DoDonPachi Resurrection - Same Great Game, Same Old Problems
Here’s a great guide to the game:

@MasterLeon also mentioned some great resources like HCG101 and STG weekly in their post above
Re: Rumour: Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection Is Coming To Switch
@Gwynbleidd it’s 100% going to require an additional download. Revelations alone with DLC was 9GB and that was on PS3. Ezio Collection without patches is circs 38GB on PS4/Xbox. Even if Ubisoft uses only PS3 assets (hopefully they won’t, I’m positive it’ll be a port of the Ezio Trilogy and not of the 3 og releases) a 16GB cart would not be enough and they sre not going to pay for a 32GB cart.
Re: Mini Review: DoDonPachi Resurrection - Same Great Game, Same Old Problems
I think the worst thing is its eShop banner, with that art and the name only in japanese it won’t attract anyone who isn’t already looking for it.
The game is incredible, just remember that to learn and survive you should start with choosing Strong type for your ship. Build combo/hyper mode, engage hyper mode to bullet cancel and try to keep your combo/hyper up, use it, build it again rinse and repeat. When you learn how to do that efficiently, as far surviving goes it’s one of the easier DDP and Cave games out there.
