Amazing work. My hands hurt just by looking at the thing lol
@Matty1988 you remember wrong! Amazing console built for gaming, library, tech and controller (d-pad notwithstanding lol). Also inexpensive, especially in PAL land. Got mine at US launch with Wave Race BS, Rogue Squadron II and Luigi’s Mansion. ‘Twas a cozy gaming Christmas that year, yep!

@GrailUK because its content is problematic, especially towards lgbtq people with its depiction of genders among many other unfortunate things that luckily we handle with different sensibilities now compared to 2006 (but that is still somehow “normal” in Japanese media, although change seems to be slowly coming there too and it’ll keep getting hopefully better because they are 10 years behind). Mind you, MOTHER 3 is a very special game to me and without a doubt one of my favorite of all time, and that is also thanks to its masterful fantranlation, I absolutely adore the story, the gameplay, the audiovisual, and how it handles being a “sequel”, but the script and plenty of sections do put Nintendo in a weird spot. I mean, I loved it so much that I own both the official jpn release and a repro-cart with the English patch on it, and I can’t see them ever releasing the game as it is (for god’s sake it would’ve happened by now, we got a freaking Famicom Detective Club localization!) while also knowing that changes would not sit well with the vast majority of the audience. It’s a burning hot potato to handle. I get wanting an official release, I do to and I’d pay good money for (one of the few games I’d pay for an uber expensive Collector’s Edition), but if you really are interested in playing this masterpiece then the fan-translation is of Treehouse’s quality and above 99% of what you find in official releases, it’s a labor of love by a team led by a renowned industry professional (Tomato) and it runs on a toaster. Its been available for 13 years, I’m sure by now if you’re really interested in Mother 3 then you have found a way to play it and can just look forward to a possible official release to own.
See what happens when BAMCO tries, Harada? Little Nightmares II NSW outsold the PS4 version 3:1 despite the franchise arriving way later (and with a price hike nontheless) on Switch and the series having “great gfx/atmosphere” as a dev focus and selling point, but when the port is good and there day 1 you get the numbers. Still ridiculous that no Soul Calibur port exists.
Great review. I’ve decided to not buy anything else from Inin until they fix (at least partially, currently they’re in unplayable state) the dumpster fire that were the 2 Saturn Tribute Cottons and Guardian Force, 45€ down the drain there…
Guardian Force is especially AMAZING and it’s a crime to leave it in such horrible state.
OMG I want it. Paddle for Arkanoid… I loved playing Arkanoid DS, Puzzle Bubble Galaxy and especially Space Invaders Extreme 1/2 with my Hori Paddle Controller for the Nintendo DS!
Too bad we’ll never get Marble Madness, Missile Command and Atari games on Arcade Archives to use that tasty trackball :/
While you’re at it, dear Hori, please release a proper D-pad Joycon WITH wireless capabilities so I can use one with Flip Grip. Modding a dpad to existing Left Joycons in place of the buttons feels awful.
Nintendo has been unfortunately awful at gate keeping bottom of the barrel asset flips that would look awful on Google Play since the WiiU days, that being said this dumpsterfire of a “game” is getting a few NOVAX moroons riled up on Twitter and reddit so its existence is worth it just to expose the sorry state of humanity and gets two thumbs up. Still, I get what they were going for, but they could’ve done without the “frogs making people gay - joke”

I’d easily pay $50 to get an M2 done collection with BB/SBB/NES Bubble Bobble 2/Rainbow Island/Parasol Stars/Bubble Symphony.

These two have been on my Most Wanted wishlist for almost 6 years, lol

@riccyjay You’re definitely mistaken, every DDPR guide worth its salt, or any player familiar with the game really, will tell you that Hyper Mode’s bullet canceling is survival’s main mechanic and fundamental if you want to beat the game without credit feeding a lot.
On the 1st loop (I doubt that someone playing for survival is so good at the game to even rach 2nd loop easily, and when you do you’ll have improved and refined your skills so it’s a non-issue) the hyper rank resets at every stage and it also goes back to 1 eveytime you die. It’s also unlikely that on stage 4/5 a survive player will raise their hyper rank so fast while also getting close to full chaining the stages that the hyperrank will make buller super fast and suggest a different tactic to survive than HM bullets canceling… and if it were to happen, then you’re scoring great and also getting lives, so by dying you just get back to rank1 of HM.
The game is completely built around chaining and hm bullet challenging and unless you want to get to end by clicking in continue a bunch of times you need to learn that. It’s probably the easiest CAVE stg ever as far as playing for survival goes.
@Gwynbleidd it’s 100% going to require an additional download. Revelations alone with DLC was 9GB and that was on PS3. Ezio Collection without patches is circs 38GB on PS4/Xbox. Even if Ubisoft uses only PS3 assets (hopefully they won’t, I’m positive it’ll be a port of the Ezio Trilogy and not of the 3 og releases) a 16GB cart would not be enough and they sre not going to pay for a 32GB cart.
I think the worst thing is its eShop banner, with that art and the name only in japanese it won’t attract anyone who isn’t already looking for it.
The game is incredible, just remember that to learn and survive you should start with choosing Strong type for your ship. Build combo/hyper mode, engage hyper mode to bullet cancel and try to keep your combo/hyper up, use it, build it again rinse and repeat. When you learn how to do that efficiently, as far surviving goes it’s one of the easier DDP and Cave games out there.
Very well written review, I’m one who hasn’t refrained from manifesting disappointment with many reviews over NL’s last 15+ years, but I’m happy to point it out when a review, in my opinion, is great (and it has nothing to do with the score or if I agree with it). Bravo, @jordan miller
@Vyacheslav333 not even close, I own a JPN X360 with an almost (99%) full shmup lineup digital and physical, the NSW currently has more than DOUBLE the number of releases and even quality-wise it is at a minum comparable, probably better. If Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets, Futari, Raiden Fighter Aces and Bullet Soul IB come (Guwange, Radiant Silvergun and DDP SDJJ might be tricky) I’d say I might decide to sell my collection for a lot of moolah and not regret it one bit.
NSW has way more shmups than PS4 too, the latter “just” holds onto Dangun Feveron, Battle Garegga and Ketsui’s exclusivity which I wouldn’t be surprised to see coming sometime in the future (even tho Battle Garegga might have to wait for NSW 2). There’s a TON of all time greats missing on PS4 that are on NSW, although obviously without the ShotTriggers treatment.
@Yorumi “ Why are credits such a big deal? I mean outside movies, music, and video games there aren't huge lists of credits for the work people do. How often have you seen a list of credits on the house someone built, or the people who stocked the shelves at the local grocery store?”
lol
Because you don’t sign NDAs and there’s nothing secret about working for Walmart or building a house while for games/movies/ent. the inability to share your work and secrecy on clients and projects are a big part of the job and your curriculum is literally your portfolio and credits you appear on?
What a weird take.
@meteoroid “Nobody is going to be looking at the credits to offer you a job opportunity. You seriously think companies that are interested in hiring you are going to play a game and then reach the credits, or even watch a YouTube video of the credits, to find out if you are actually on them? That's absolute nonsense.”
This is nonsense. “they won’t play a game till the end to watch credits” well duh?? I mean, obviously no they won’t, no sheeī. That’s not how it works, you’re in the entertainment industry yourself so kinda weird you’d think that. It’s to avoid NDAs especially at the beginning (0/5years) of your career and being credited undoubtedly gives you a jumpstart to get hired over other people at basically any AAA dev out there, especially wheb you don’t work in assets creation but game logic/design.
@XenoShaun wow 4 years and I got a reply the same day amazing haha XD I will start from the bottom: about the reviews, I agree they’ve improved their usefulness info-wise and feel bad because I’ve called them out twice in the matter of 2 days (I think I criticized the text -never the score of course- of a review just a couple times before over a 10 years span), with the Hot Wheels review and this one. As for the game, well I play handheld myself like 99.5% of my time with the console has been in portable mode. I was just curious if the downgrade was on playability (Joycons vs Pro C?) on performance (framerate, slowdowns…) or on graphics, maybe effects/particles-wise?
Regardless, next time this goes on sale (and I see that a lot) I will grab it, it’s crazy that I own 300+ NSW games and I always thought this was a mediocre title that got a boost from the relatively small library at the time.
@XenoShaun I’m 4 years late lmao but did you ever find out what was inferior about handheld mode?
What a review… ‘hey you know what’s so important that I will highlight it in the Pro/Cons score card? That it’s inferior in hh mode!’
Price is fine to me, it’s an arcade game and 1 hour is not that short at all. Reminds me of people complaining they beat such and such shmup in 1 hour and then you find you they credits fed the whole thing and think that’s it.
What is making me hesitant tho, is the lack of scoring. That, with leaderboards, would have gave the game a huge boost in replayability. Sucks there’s none :-/
@Nintendo4Sonic well, they usually don’t report on technical details and are not too fussed about mentioning even basic info like framerates or resolution (sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t), I know that and I accept it since there’s room for everyone, but a review like this? First, you can touch on graphics and performance even without getting into numbers, but this hardly says anything about gameplay, how is this a proper review? There have been “mini” reviews on this site that were waaaaaay more in-depht and informative. This lacks the most basic info that would help in any way a reader making a decision or even getting an idea about the gameplay.
A VIDEO game review that never mentions the video part, great. Never once touches upon graphics. A racing game where all you get about performance is half a sentence on the Conclusion box. Never mentions the sense of speed, the stunts, crashing and clashing, the handling… nothing. It seems this “review” needs a day1 patch more than the game itself. Don’t want to be harsh but I’m frankly puzzled this was published the way it is.
Also I can see why the incredible Esp. Rade Psi is still Asia exclusive (have it digital AND retail, LOVE IT) since €60 shmups are a hard (impossible even) sell in the west, especially 2D/pixel art ones. I’m glad the Switch platform embraced the genre, even back in the X360 days all of Cave’s western releases bombed so hard that Rising Star noped out of further licensing…
I wish Under Defeat HD, Delta/XII Zeal and especially Raiden Fighter Aces collection got ported to NSW and others tho. And Border Down is still stuck on DC.
I wish Galuda 1 got a new port since it’s stuck on PS2. Have Espgaluda 2 on X360 (which I recently hooked up to a crt Sony Wega 33” via RGB scart to play my shmup collection and looks glorious) and also the iOS release still working on an iOS 9 iPad Mini, but I can’t wait to triple dip for Switch. Hopefully it’ll have working online leaderboards tho.
A (mini)review of an “arcade-sim” (middle ground between the top down view and the physics/handling model) where handling and throttle are crucial to the experience that doesn’t even mention how playable it is (or not) with digital inputs while wasting most of its word count talking about other platforms. Something like Grid was ok with digital triggers and ain’t too bad played with analog gas on Right Stick, but Absolute Drift (same dev) was an absolute d… isgrace on that department. The review, for a racing game, doesn’t even mention the racing itself, what kind of races, if besides the free roam the tracks are good and so on and on.
Also, the game has A LOT going on under the hood and it chugs on even powerful PCs but of course it’s as much an engine limitation as it is an awful Switch port because with all the downgrades it should’ve run much better.
Too bad because I was really looking forward to play it on Switch. Yes, I have GP, don’t care because 90% of my gaming is done on NSW portable mode. I use GP as a demoing platfom of sorts.
Key art and cover are so bland, uninspired, boring, and just devoid of any style and excitement… it’s a shame because in-game it looks lovely and unless the game blows up on Twitch/Discord etc (doubt so) that is gonna fail attracting folks who don’t know about the game…
@Scoopz it seems to me that the only one with an attitude it’s you, “bro”. It’s been common knowledge for 15 years, I shared a notion with you and after that it’s up to you to do the work, I’m not going to do that for you especially with that first reply attitude. I don’t care about changing your opinion, that’s up to you, but I will always fight fake numbers in any sales discussion. I’m not sure you know what hersay is, because if it’s true then it’s not hersay which is why VGChartz has never done anything about it.
Just do your due diligence and look it up yourself, it’s not exactly a secret. By whom? By the real numbers provided by NPD, Famitsu, Media Create’s White Book, GFK, ASVI… They constantly went and deleted all mention/web pages/etc of the made up numbers and changed them into the real ones without any explanation each and every time the real sources provided numbers in the open… Anyway, I wanted to give you the notion and tools to verify it yourself, don’t have to convince anybody, if you enjoy reading a bunch of made up fluff by iOi you’re free to do that lol
@Scoopz VGFarts champions made up numbers through their “network of experts and their proprietary predictive algorithm” (lol), they’re absolutely worthless and actually a detriment to sales discussion with them continuously poisoning the discourse with fake info. This has been demonstrated countless times, just do some research if you want to know the nitty gritty.
@OorWullie it does have multiple options, TATE and X-Y screen settings, multiple windows zoom-in/out options to customize for score/combo/etc.
It lacks a scanlines filter, like the PC and X360 releases, too bad cause even with the upped rez from the og 240p this art was still drawn with scanlines in mind and it shows.
There are online leaderboards but don’t seem to be active yet and the option is greyed out so maybe they’ll go online in an upcoming patch.
Game is a blast, an absolute gem and a fantastic price, it also includes everything that was DLC on X360
@60frames-please I mean, performance is mediocre on Xbox One too, so I’m not surprised it ain’t locked 60 on NSW considering the disparity in computation between the two platforms
@everynowandben at least an 8? So you’d give it a 9 even. To me, and the reviewer it’s a 6 (I’d even say a 6 is generous, but ymmv).
See how that works? Opinions, man.
Anyway, I’ve been playing it on GP (where the performance is so-so on og Xbone so good on the devs for optimizing it a bit better on Switch -at least from what I’ve read around-). I’m all for quirky games with simple yet inventive and satisfying gameplay (Katamari Damacy is a good example) but coming from the lovely trailer, in reality the game is a bit shallow. And even audiovisually, it’s inconsistent and lacks variety in both visuals and audio. With the staggering amount of good games on Switch, and the fact that I was intrigued by the concept and trailer but came away disappointed, I can’t recommend this. But if it sounds cool to y’all and you’ve looked at a few walkthroughs on YT, go for it!
I’m glad we can have this kind of games and that there’s an audience for them (and I identify myself with being part of that audience, I just found it boring), hope to seem more of them coming.
@PoundShopOrwell Ugh. Thanks for the reply mate and for writing that post back in December saving me money and frustration. Too bad because the aesthetics are like made for me. Between this and Battle Axe it’s not going well for the audiovisual feasts currently on my wishlist.
@PoundShopOrwell sorry to page ya 😂 was this ever fixed? Has the game received any patches at all? I’m really interested and the game is on sale currently but I won’t buy if it’s still in such a dire state.
Iam8bit just released the physical edition, I don’t want to believe they’d release the game as it was at launch? I asked them but got no response. This should’ve never gotten an 8/10 imo.
Too bad. Although it seems this is the kind of project that just needed more time in the owen/funding/playtesting. If sales are decent, hopefully together with the remaining KS funds, and they (well mainly H.N.) are smart about it, this could propel from mediocre to great with a hefty free update (adding content, reworking the enemy logic and rebalancing the weapons seem to be the 3 big ones by reading the review) and some performance fixes and become a cult “newretro” darling for years to come. Fingers crossed.
@Brummieendo90 good thing I haven’t said that anywhere ever then lol
But about the NEVER happening point you’re so sure about... let’s say I’m not as confident, will see if PS7/whatever console will even have physical storage readers. We’re already at a point were 60% of most company’s software is bought digitally. I can see that going up to 90% or more in the next 15 years most definitely, don’t need a crystal ball to think that.
@Giancarlothomaz Who knows, if I’d have to speculate I’d say the Switch version could sell anything from 8 to 12m and another 4 to 6m on PC, maybe more but it’ll depend on how much Capcom is going to support the game post launch, PC launch price and regional pricing.
I wouldn’t take a bet on “my” numbers haha, because at this point we can honestly just guess... I could be right but also way off in the end. What’s sure is that if the stars align the sky’s the limit as other titles have recently shown in the era of Covid, it might explode in popularity. But beating World 17M+ is no joke, I mean it’s Capcom’s best selling game EVER by a lot.
Anyway, game is basically sold out everywhere at retail, which will boost digital but might also cripple some sales, hopefully Capcom has more shipments ready FAST.
@carlos82 oh yeah, absolutely. It’s going to be huge. I mean, there’s no question that in Japan, Rise might even blow World’s numbers out of the water. Question is by how much?
@Giancarlothomaz 10M minimum? It might, but consider that MHW is Capcom’s best selling game of all time (and by quite a margin) and that “only” sold 9M on PS4.
Also, it’s EXTREMELY unlikely it will only sell 2/3M on PC when World sold more than 6M on Steam and the game will keep selling for years and years on PC because that’s how that market works.
Btw, these are the ratio for World’s sales figures up to September 2020 (bolding Non-JPN totals since PC is a non entity in Japan and Xbox version didn’t even release there)
.
PC USA: 1.616 m
PC EU: 1.570 m
PC Asia: 2.531 m
PC NonJP Total: 5.717M
+
PC Japan: 236k
——
Sony USA: 2.392 m
Sony EU: 1.702 m

Sony NonJP Total: 5.509M

Sony Japan: 3.184m

@Exciter89 I’ll let it slide because you have a DM avvy (even tho it’s their second worst album) and I’m one of the biggest fan on Earth lol (seen them first in ‘89 and last in 2017 with 20 other times inbetween haha) BUT:
Apples and Oranges basically.
A Lynel fight goes for 3/4 minutes at best, a Monster fight can go on for 20+ minutes and it’s like if you were taking on Godzilla, you need to outsmart him and tire him and hit him and follow him if he tries to run away, get him out again, hit him more and more... etcetera. The whole point is that fight, that hunt is the quest itself. On Zelda, my GOAT btw, the big enemy is just a part of the quest.
On the other hand, Skyrim’s combat is just baaaaaaad.

Re: The Horrifically Brilliant Mega Drive Shmup 'Gynoug' Is Coming To Switch
Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds
Re: Review: BUTCHER (Switch eShop)
Re: Review: BUTCHER (Switch eShop)
@XenoShaun I’m 4 years late lmao but did you ever find out what was inferior about handheld mode?
What a review… ‘hey you know what’s so important that I will highlight it in the Pro/Cons score card? That it’s inferior in hh mode!’
: proceeds to not saying a word about it :
So informative, thank you, will read again.
Re: Review: Steel Assault - A Quick Bite To Savour With Classic Castlevania Flavour
Re: Review: Hot Wheels Unleashed - Probably The Best Hot Wheels Game Ever
@Nintendo4Sonic well, they usually don’t report on technical details and are not too fussed about mentioning even basic info like framerates or resolution (sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t), I know that and I accept it since there’s room for everyone, but a review like this? First, you can touch on graphics and performance even without getting into numbers, but this hardly says anything about gameplay, how is this a proper review? There have been “mini” reviews on this site that were waaaaaay more in-depht and informative. This lacks the most basic info that would help in any way a reader making a decision or even getting an idea about the gameplay.
Re: Review: Hot Wheels Unleashed - Probably The Best Hot Wheels Game Ever
A VIDEO game review that never mentions the video part, great. Never once touches upon graphics. A racing game where all you get about performance is half a sentence on the Conclusion box. Never mentions the sense of speed, the stunts, crashing and clashing, the handling… nothing. It seems this “review” needs a day1 patch more than the game itself. Don’t want to be harsh but I’m frankly puzzled this was published the way it is.
Re: Cave's Shmup Espgaluda II Is Targeting A September Switch Release In Japan
Re: Cave's Shmup Espgaluda II Is Targeting A September Switch Release In Japan
I wish Galuda 1 got a new port since it’s stuck on PS2. Have Espgaluda 2 on X360 (which I recently hooked up to a crt Sony Wega 33” via RGB scart to play my shmup collection and looks glorious) and also the iOS release still working on an iOS 9 iPad Mini, but I can’t wait to triple dip for Switch. Hopefully it’ll have working online leaderboards tho.
Re: Mini Review: art of rally - Stylish Driving With Plenty Of Substance
Re: Arietta of Spirits Demo Arrives Today, Launches Very Soon
Key art and cover are so bland, uninspired, boring, and just devoid of any style and excitement… it’s a shame because in-game it looks lovely and unless the game blows up on Twitch/Discord etc (doubt so) that is gonna fail attracting folks who don’t know about the game…
Re: Super Rare Games Unveils 'Mixtape Vol. 1', A Collection Of 30 Games From Up And Coming Devs
At least say in the headline this is PC-only ?
Not cool @Ryan

@Scoopz ok
Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Settles For Second After A 74% Drop In Weekly Sales
@Scoopz you should really work on your reading comprehension and anger issues. ciao
Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Settles For Second After A 74% Drop In Weekly Sales

Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Settles For Second After A 74% Drop In Weekly Sales
@Scoopz
Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Settles For Second After A 74% Drop In Weekly Sales
Re: Cave's Acclaimed Shooter, Mushihimesama, Is Out Now On Switch
@OorWullie it does have multiple options, TATE and X-Y screen settings, multiple windows zoom-in/out options to customize for score/combo/etc.
It lacks a scanlines filter, like the PC and X360 releases, too bad cause even with the upped rez from the og 240p this art was still drawn with scanlines in mind and it shows.
There are online leaderboards but don’t seem to be active yet and the option is greyed out so maybe they’ll go online in an upcoming patch.
Game is a blast, an absolute gem and a fantastic price, it also includes everything that was DLC on X360
Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Gets Its Nintendo Switch Release Date
It’d be hilarious(ly bad) if this ends up lacking 60fps locked.
At the very least have a performance mode and not have look like p**s
Re: Review: Rain on Your Parade - A Refreshingly Brief But Saccharine Shower
@60frames-please I mean, performance is mediocre on Xbox One too, so I’m not surprised it ain’t locked 60 on NSW considering the disparity in computation between the two platforms
Re: Review: Spinch - A Deliciously Enjoyable Sugar Rush
@PoundShopOrwell so the guys from Iam8bit replied to my email and said that the physical release is going to be on version 1.04.
Is that the same version you have? Fingers crossed it’s 1.03 so that means a new patch is imminent.... otherwise it’s dead Jim :/
Re: Review: Rain on Your Parade - A Refreshingly Brief But Saccharine Shower
Re: Review: Spinch - A Deliciously Enjoyable Sugar Rush
@PoundShopOrwell Ugh. Thanks for the reply mate and for writing that post back in December saving me money and frustration.
Too bad because the aesthetics are like made for me. Between this and Battle Axe it’s not going well for the audiovisual feasts currently on my wishlist.
Re: Review: Spinch - A Deliciously Enjoyable Sugar Rush
@PoundShopOrwell sorry to page ya 😂 was this ever fixed? Has the game received any patches at all? I’m really interested and the game is on sale currently but I won’t buy if it’s still in such a dire state.
Iam8bit just released the physical edition, I don’t want to believe they’d release the game as it was at launch? I asked them but got no response. This should’ve never gotten an 8/10 imo.
Re: Review: Battle Axe - A Battling Throwback That Doesn't Land All Its Hits
Fingers crossed.
...now what should I spend that money on?🤔
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
@Brummieendo90 good thing I haven’t said that anywhere ever then lol
But about the NEVER happening point you’re so sure about... let’s say I’m not as confident, will see if PS7/whatever console will even have physical storage readers.
We’re already at a point were 60% of most company’s software is bought digitally. I can see that going up to 90% or more in the next 15 years most definitely, don’t need a crystal ball to think that.
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
@Giancarlothomaz
Who knows, if I’d have to speculate I’d say the Switch version could sell anything from 8 to 12m and another 4 to 6m on PC, maybe more but it’ll depend on how much Capcom
is going to support the game post launch, PC launch price and regional pricing.
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
@carlos82 oh yeah, absolutely. It’s going to be huge. I mean, there’s no question that in Japan, Rise might even blow World’s numbers out of the water. Question is by how much?
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
Sony Asia: 1.414 m
Sony NonJP Total: 5.509M
+
Sony Japan: 3.184m
——
Xbox WW: 1.789M
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Ships Four Million Units In Opening Weekend
Obviously. There was nothing to confirm tho, because this has been Capcom’s mo for a while already, it’s not a secret.
