Octopath Traveler Has Now Sold Over 3 Million Units Physically And Digitally

No mention of the gamepass numbers which may indicate it wasn't very popular, hence why the second game isn't coming to xbox. Even looking at the achievements less than 7% of players on xbox completed chapter 2 for ophelia and similar percentages for the rest.

So these sales are mainly for the Nintendo switch which to me is very decent considering its a 2D game, hopefully triangle strategy has had the same success as that game is also excellent.

One of the few games I still bought a collector's edition of. I mean, a pop up book for a 2d 3d game, almost makes the collector's edition the only complete edition of the overall artwork. Like the storybook of The Cruel King and the Great Hero.

For some reason, there doesn't seem to be a big market for JRPGs on Xbox.

@Mioaionios It's weird... It's not like Microsoft doesn't try. And it's not even the fact that Microsoft is not as popular in Japan since a lot of JRPGs sales come from the west.

Deserved. It's a great spiritual successor of the Snes era JRPG.

I got the Special Edition, but never completed any of the 2nd chapters as some of my charcters we just so under powered I could not be bothered to grind them higher and gave up. Just dont have the patience that a younger me would have.

Nice, I have the game on xbox gamepass but I think I'll play and buy the switch version instead since it's nice to play it whether in portable or on tv mode. Since the switch digital version is rarely discounted maybe I'll buy the physical version instead, after I finish live a live.

It's a catch 22. JRPG fans don't buy Xboxes because many JRPGs are not released on Xbox, and many JRPGs are not released on Xbox because JRPG fans don't play on Xbox. If Microsoft wants a bigger piece of that market they should invest serious money in bringing over more JRPGs for several years.

@UltimateOtaku91 Ophilia is not necessarily the second chapter and looking at the achievements statistics is the worst way to guess a game's popularity/sales. Octopath Traveler used to be in the most popular Game Pass ranking. Also, we don't know if the sequel is coming to Xbox or not yet. Probably, sales were not very high on Xbox because it was a day-one Game Pass game and the Xbox version was released three years after the Switch version, but it was popular on Game Pass. They might make another Game Pass deal for the sequel.

I've played and completed Octopath, Bravely Default 2, and Triangle Strategy on the Switch. Personally I think Square's style of these games has become a little formulaic, and they're releasing them a bit too thick and fast.

I beat the game and thought it was okay. It felt too grindy and I am not a big fan of the battle mechanic. I dislike the Bravely battles for the same reason.

I liked the music though. To be honest this was the reason I bought it. Hearing the full Ost on Youtube made me want to buy the game. Well I will not make the same mistake again. I will Listen to the Ost, enjoy it and call it a day.

Now let's hope the mobile game will also release on Switch. For some reason my phone isn't supported so I can't play it.

I know some people felt this game was a little flat, but I absolutely loved it. Sure it was a bit talky but, it has such an impressive style and fun battle system that I loved experimenting with. Plus, as I’ve mentioned many times, it may be my favorite soundtrack in a video game. I still play it to this day, especially the battle themes. I can’t wait for part 2.

The HD-2D games are some of my very favorite on Switch. Some complain about little inter-character interaction in OP I. But it left the door open for excellent head-canon for me. I always pretended Olberic didn’t ever realize Theon was a thief, and the others kind of hid it from him. 😆

If Xbox funds a Gamepass release I think Square will abide. They wouldn’t care too much about numbers if they get a big fat upfront cheque from Microsoft. Of course there may be extra income if they achieve certain engagement milestones but who knows. Maybe it was actually Xbox that decided it wasn’t worth getting the sequel on the platform. Personally I couldn’t get into Octopath but it’s a shame if true as they really should be taking the hit and pushing for more JRPGs on their platform. I think they are giving up again.

As these games always sell better on PS and Nintendo; I think Xbox should just make their own exclusive JRPG series (easier said than done) like Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon etc.

I really tried to get into Octopath but I just couldn't. The split narrative just made it impossible to get invested in.

Also I've found the aesthetics of it overused ever since. It was a cool (if rather muddy) look at the time but so many things since have used it that I kind of just roll my eyes when something new does it by now.

I bought it and I never really thought it was anything special. Story took me entirely out of the experience and I never looked back. So I won't be getting the second game.

I really really liked the first game, and will definitely pick up the sequel. And I didn’t think it was remotely grindy. I didn’t grind a single time, just fought battles in the normal course of playing the game (with the reduced encounter rate perk), and usually still felt overlevelled by the time I started hitting everyone’s chapter 2.

Glad to see they’re increasing the inter-character aspects of the sequel - that was one of the few weak points of the original. Also, not sure why anyone expects Squenix to announce this for Game Pass at launch. I’m sure there’s a timed exclusivity, but it’ll reach your Xboxes after a year.

Kinda feel sorry for PlayStation players that didn't get this game for PS4, well at least Octopath Traveler II is coming to PS5 and Switch on the same day so that would be their first.

The lack of an Xbox version tells me the first one didn't really make a splash on GP, and Microsoft didn't bother paying out for the sequel.

Might also mean we won't see Bravely II or Triangle Strategy hit Xbox in the future, either.

@Ralizah Imo SE didn’t want a GP version on day 1 jeopardize the sales of the other versions and why make it themselves when they can get it on GP a year later with a nice check and Microsoft paying for porting duties, while Microsoft obviously didn’t care enough to pay a bigger check bring it to GP on Day 1. Also obviously, SE didn’t think it’d be profitable enough to develop OP2 as a retail/digital Xbox title. Will see, it’s all speculation, but I don’t see this game staying Xbox-elusive forever.

@Bunkerneath $180?! What?? They're really trying to gouge you for those 8 statues, sheesh. I would have bought everything else without the statues for around $100~, but nearly $200 including tax just is not for me.

Sad that this isn't coming out on the Xbox. The best part of Octopath for me was the music, and the xbox version had higher quality audio & video compared to the switch. The switch had the audio files compressed a bit. I'm hoping the audio quality for Octopath 2 is better on the Switch, preorder is in.

Looks nice but I don't think I've ever been so bored playing a game!
