Re: Poll: Do Video Game Reviews Need To Have A Score?

ClockworkMario

@Dezzy
People surely interpret different ratings differently, they're not interchangeable. Doesn't three out of five stars seem a bit more than 6/10? I agree with you: they should keep the current system, but there's no need to start bashing those who think otherwise.
@Spectra_Twilight
But a solid number does give some indication of how the reviewer experienced the game. It gives us some means to rank a game, however crude, and compare it with others without delving deep into the game. I like that. A score is no substitute for a proper opinion piece, for sure, but it does tell us something: like, is the game complete thrash, worth finding about more or perhaps a rare gem.

Re: Weirdness: This Video Uses Super Mario Bros. 2 to Illustrate the Consequences of Capitalism

ClockworkMario

@mjc0961
I was trying to point out the fundamental difference between arguing for a point and summarizing the works of others, since that seems to be lost on many. He isn't saying "This is why capitalism is bad for you!!!", he's explaining what Karl Weber thought of the subject: that is, the constant demand to produce more and more in the face of severe punishments creates anxiety, a cage of sorts. Wasn't that fairly evident from the video? I'm not saying to agree with it – I certainly don't – just don't burn down the movie theatre because you disliked a film. I recommended his channel to give an overview of the content he produces and therefore making my own point stronger: he has talked about Plato before, but I doubt he believes the real world is but the shadow of a world of Forms.

About the video itself: a few very rough conclusions have been drawn from the work ethics lifted from religions, for example when trying to interpret the differences in mind set between Northern and Southern Europe. The idea is that in the reformed countries a thought of working hard has been etched in the minds of the people, whereas in catholic states people are a lot more lenient or to be cruel, lazy. This all seems rather flimsy and oversimplifying, though.

The numbers do give a nice indication of of what ballpark the game's on, and support the points made for and against in the text. It's not some absolute guideline one should follow, but I like to see the reviewers opinion imbued on this easy-to.understand format. That's why NL should keep some sort of numerical scale in their reviews.

To those who mentioned the length: remember that the function of reviews is to both judge and inform. Someone new to gaming might not be familiar with even the basic mechanics of say, Monster Hunter 4, hence the need to write it all down, even if it means long-winded texts. Luckily the subject of each paragraph is usually evident by the first few words, so I just skip the parts which I'm already familiar with.

Re: New Study Finds No Connection Between Video Game Violence And Its Real-World Equivalent

ClockworkMario

Great news for gamers, although this isn't the first study to say so. Yes, there's been few odd ones that claim the contrary, but the "they don't cause violence" -camp seems overwhelming – and for a good reason. Say if I watch or read A Clockwork Orange, I don't feel slightest need to start dressing like a goofball and doing a bit of the old ultraviolence.

That being said, the conclusion that violent games outright curb real world violence sounds like simple correlation error to me, as there are surely many more meaningful reasons for the trend.

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd July (Europe)

ClockworkMario

@DESS-M-8
Actually, I believe NOE has its servers located at Ireland and all the VAT from downloads are payed there. This is a common practice among download-shop providers, since Ireland's VAT is a measly 11%.

Re: Nintendo Provides Some Context to 2013's Tomodachi Life Same-Sex Marriage Controversy

ClockworkMario

Nintendo sure ended up in a pickle. I assume they originally intended to take no stance to the subject, but were, in a way, forced to because of the glitch. Either way they went from there was sure to irritate somebody. Since I have nothing against gay marriages I understand Nintendo's decision either way.

Wasn't gonna buy it anyway, 'cause these types of games don't interest me.

Re: New Watch_Dogs Trailer Highlights a Living, Breathing Chicago Game World

ClockworkMario

I fear they'll release the Wii U version January-February next year at full price and without the DLC out at that point. That way they can ensure that it competes against the 30€ GOTY-versions out on other platforms. Then the sales will be abysmal and Ubisoft shan't release anymore Wii U -games aside from Just Dances.

Of course everything above is just speculation. They could just cancel it outright, too.

Re: Nintendo Comes Up Empty at BAFTA Awards

ClockworkMario

@Peek-a-boo
Who are you attacking exactly? You seem to assume that: 1)No one else here can own more than Nintendo consoles 2)Even if they only have the big N (like me), they can't appreciate games on other platforms.

Most of the comments concerning that here only seem to say "I really enjoyed X-game, I wish it would've won. Oh well." And no idea how you came to the conclusion that SM3DW would be forgotten; Sunshine and 64 are still looked upon fondly by many.

Re: Valve's Gabe Newell Thinks Super Mario 64 Is Just Swell

ClockworkMario

@aaronsullivan
But the question isn't which game had the greatest controls in 1996 nor is it which one revolutionised gaming most; it's about which feels the most fluid today. I played 64 on VC 'round the year 2011 and was astounded about how sloppy the controls and camera felt, especially after the universal praise the Internet had showered on it for the past decade. Simply put playing it wasn't enjoyable, and if a Mario game like that would come out in 2014 it would be slaughtered by critics and audience alike.

Don't take me wrong; I'm not trying to strip it of its merits –SM64 forever changed the field of gaming. Let's compare it to airplanes: I'd rather fly on a shining new Boeing than the Wrights' first effort, that barely got off the ground, even though I can admire their legacy.

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th February (Europe)

ClockworkMario

Zero Escape for me. I would've bought it at launch, in fact I had already put some money aside for it, but then I read that the European release only has Japanese voice acting, even though a English one exists. That was a deal-breaker for me, but I'm more than happy to pick it up for 1/4 of the original price.

Re: Clash Of Clans Creator Supercell Doesn't Want To Compete With Nintendo

ClockworkMario

Their games don't interest me in the slightest, but Supercell earned my eternal respects by paying 160 million € in taxes from the investment. It's magnificent to see a company to take responsibility for society, especially when, I assume, they could've just "planned" the taxes so that us Finns would've been left in the best.

All the best to them. They'll never be another Nintendo, but they could still make unforgettable experiences, provided they don't get too greedy with the "pay-to-win" -plans.

Re: Review: Angry Bunnies (3DS eShop)

ClockworkMario

I wonder what it is with game names nowadays. It's always adjective + noun (Angry Birds, Amazing Alex, Tiny Wings etc. etc.). They probably have some sort of mobile game generator that decides these things. Heck, maybe it even picks the gameplay from one of the three options available.

Re: Nintendo Financial Reports Bring Minor Profit, 3DS Success and More Wii U Struggles

ClockworkMario

@Finntendo @Kolzig

Glad to see some Finns around here. I agree on the price point it's preposterous in some place ahöm gamestop ahöm but with little comparing a bearable price can usually be found. Like I was recently able to preorder AC:IV for 53€ online. The console itself can also be found for cheap nowadays; for example here's Premium Wind Waker Pack for 299€.

@Kolzig raises another good point about the presence of Nintendo outside the few core countries they seem to have in Europe (Germany, Italy, UK etc.). I believe they should have a stronger centralised NOE, with sections for different regions –Fenno-Scandia, the Baltic states, Central-Europe and so on. This way they might be able to provide better services for customers, with proper translations, Nintendo Club and regulated price points.

Of course I'm no business expert, so perhaps there's some reason why they haven't done this already.

Re: Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies Demo Is Available Now On The 3DS eShop

ClockworkMario

Just finished the demo and had a great time. Once again top notch writing, epic music and good graphics. The only oddity was that new characters cheesy intro. I hope they'll develop her character more in the final game,

And about digital only release: just get over it. It's the same game anyway. They're selling it at a very low price, so atleast that shouldn't be a problem.
