Re: Anniversary: Super Mario 64 is Now 20 Years Old

Arlo

Nothing will ever blow my mind the way this game did. It was magical future technology that aliens brought to Earth. The graphics and the variety of controls were simply unreal.

Also I think it's funny (and also terrifying in an "I'm old" sort of way) that I have a clear memory of the remastered version coming to DS, and more time has passed since the DS one than the time between the original and DS.

Re: Video: Bayonetta 2 Is Just Too Darn Sexy, Even For Hormone-Addled Teens

Arlo

I don't normally criticize the kind of content you guys make, even when it's just something random or silly, which I actually think is fun. But making an article whenever the Fine Bros. make a Nintendo-related "React" video is going a little too far--especially so when you don't label the article as such. These guys are trying to do horrible things to the industry and they're morally bankrupt individuals. There are just so many Nintendo-related videos going on out there that it saddens me that THESE are the ones you choose to promote over and over again. It really cheapens the value of your site and reduces it to clickbait, and I know you guys are above that.

So I urge you to stop promoting these videos. And even if you still insist on doing so, please make it clear in the article's title and/or description. I don't even want to run the risk of clicking a Fine Bros. video even once, and I would urge other Nintendo Lifers to avoid them as well.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 2016?

Arlo

One game does not a good E3 make. Zelda looked great, but without any other big reveals and the only mildly interesting stuff being steeped in hours and hours of boring Treehouse streams rendering the "live reveal" idea just about moot, this E3 was garbage. If you're not going to bring the games you might as well not show up. E3 is nothing without surprises.

Re: Video: Weep with Us Over these Top Five Gaming Series that Ain't What They Used to Be

Arlo

@MadAdam81 Like I said, for me it was more than the ending. The story had a ton of weird plot holes, there were no good new squadmates, the writing was just not on-par with the other games, the character used a bunch of lame, forced jokes that constantly broke the immersion... The whole game felt rushed and like it was heavily influenced by EA jerks in suits that cared none about the series.

But it was definitely cool sci-fi action, so I can see how some people were fine with it. Not all that stuff matters to everyone.

Re: The Legend of Zelda Will Have Its Own Range of Trading Cards

Arlo

It seems people didn't catch when this happened before. They had a range of Twilight Princess ones back when the game came out, and it was the same thing--collectible cards of the characters and items and enemies, with some foils and temporary tattoos. I bought a couple packs at Target, they were great.

Re: Metroid Prime: Federation Force Liberates North America This August

Arlo

The game would be easier to swallow as a small spinoff release if it didn't take well over a year to release after the reveal. But I guess that's just the disconnect between fan wants and Nintendo's own feelings on its games. It seems like they're way stoked on this game and giving it a ton of love, and we're all just sitting here waiting for it to come and go so they can do something else.

Re: Poll: Are You Ready to Download More of Your Retail Games From the eShop?

Arlo

Between the Deluxe Digital Promotion, Club Nintendo, and occasional sales on eShop cards at Best Buy, I saved a bunch of money buying multiple retail games digitally on my Wii U. If that kind of stuff continues, and especially if they finally make unified accounts and all that, I can see myself doing it more in the future.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Wii U eShop / DS)

Arlo

I hate this whole thing. I really want to play this game, and buying it on Wii U is incredibly cheap compared to buying even a used physical copy (about one-third the price!!) But I made the mistake of buying Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time on Wii U and it was a HUGE MISTAKE. That game didn't even use the touch screen, yet focusing on both screens was an absolute nightmare. None of the screen settings worked well (the "virtual DS" setting would work better if so much of the screen wasn't taken up by the DS picture--WHAT THE HECK?) and I was only able to really feel okay playing it when I was slouched back on the couch with the TV just above the gamepad in my vision. A 20-hour RPG that was uncomfortable to play 100% of the time.

The fact that this isn't available on the 3DS as well isn't just silly and confusing; it's infuriating. I want to play this game, and yet there's no reasonable way to do so. Awesome.

Re: Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge Launches in Japan This Month

Arlo

@RainbowGazelle It's like they've been in panic mode, just getting cheap titles out as fast as they can...for the last several years. We're all waiting for them to become comfortable and start making big projects again, and they're just not wanting to do it.

If the NX doesn't LAUNCH with a giant amiibo game, then Nintendo's in a worse place than any of us could have ever guessed.

Re: Black Friday Sales Bring Little Joy for Nintendo in the UK

Arlo

Yup. This Black Friday (and the one or two weeks surrounding it--not a doorbuster) I could pick up a PS4 or an Xbox One for $300 with a game. If I were the average consumer, I would have been stupid to get a Wii U for the same price. But I think Nintendo knows that, and they're just looking to the future.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Wii U eShop / DS)

Arlo

I never understood the monumental praise this received. For me using the touch screen only was a horribly un-fun limitation that made this hardly as good as it could have been. Then you've got the fact that the positively gorgeous pixel art of Minish Cap was replaced with ugly 3D sprites, and while we're talking about it, that awful dungeon you have to do over and over again.

I'm glad everyone else liked it, but oy vey, this game disappointed me. No Zelda game should be "sorta fun, I guess."

Re: Review: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

Arlo

@Parkour_LMan They don't have to be "about the story" to have a satisfying one. I disagree with Nintendo's idea that just because the story isn't the most important part, it's thus worthless and to be jettisoned (3D Mario starting with Galaxy 2, Paper Mario starting with Sticker Star, Mario and Luigi starting with this one). It's pure laziness and dumbing down, and I don't enjoy a game nearly as much when it's stripped back in this way.

Other people don't seem to care though, so I guess that's cool for them. I'm probably in the minority.

Re: Review: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

Arlo

Stripped back story. Great. Don't worry, it's not like the story is one of my favorite elements of Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games. I hope that the new Zelda has no story as well, and that no Nintendo game ever has a story again.

I HAVE THE SARCASM!

Re: Minecraft Wii U Edition Has Been Rated By PEGI

Arlo

Dang spoilers! Well, it's my fault for checking the news this close to a Direct. Anyway, that's great news, though! I'm trying to push away my grumpy "too little too late" feelings and just be happy that it's finally coming.
