With the Wii U and 3DS approaching the end of their lifespans and the release schedule looking rather bare, the amiibo range is going to be more important than ever to Nintendo this Christmas.
The toy-like nature of the figures combined with a low price point should ensure they sell briskly this holiday season, but just to make sure, Nintendo of America is running a commercial which focuses on the toys and their connectivity with games.
Nintendo has already sold millions of amiibo toys, and the NFC-equipped figurines have provided a vital source of revenue during a tough 2015. Hopefully this fresh promotion will ensure the firm sells a few more this Christmas.

That could be the worst advert ever for selling toys. I own them all for collection purposes. But what did that advert show unlock a link skin for mario and a mario skin for yoshi and invite your animal crossing amiibos over. WTF!!
Nintendo need to be making a skylanders style game that lets you play any of these characters.
It would sell amazing!
Pfft...amiibo aren't rated by the ESRB! Silly Nintendo.
@Stuffgamer1 Perhaps the games shown are.
@PinkSpider D-D-D-DOUBLE COMMENT DAMAGE!
But yeah. It would be awesome.
I wonder how amiibos are affecting Nintendo's business model.
I feel like these things probably make more money than the actual games they're intended to support - kind of like ancillary merchandise does for movies.
Their blanket marketing with almost every first party release alienates me a little. I know I don't have to buy the things but it can't help dampen my excitement when I think that maybe the games are going to play second-fiddle. Like the HD Twilight Princess release. It gave me the impression that it's promotion was hugely driven by the desire for another boxed figure.
Sorry for such a cynical and potentially paranoid post. Lots of people seem to get a lot of fun out of them and if they're helping to keep Nintendo afloat in a difficult period - that has to be a positive ultimately.
"so many amiibo available" yeah, that's why i only have 1/5 amiibos that I want...
Amiibos are becoming easier to get as many stores in my area seem to carry many different ones now and there aren't moving at all. I feel (and it has been stated like a million times by others) that Nintendo screwed this one up big time. The first batch sold like hotcakes so Nintendo decides to do nothing and leave us hungry. Makes sense? So finally after like A YEAR! They start to do a good re-stock which is fine...BUT where is the killer game that would utilize these figures in a unique way that makes others say "damn I need to get with this!" Well that ain't coming folks. So, people have stressed and tried to collect items that will go down in memory alongside the beanie baby and for what?
@LaVelle I think you nailed it. Mario Tennis and AC Amiibo Festival are clear examples that Nintendo are abandoning their mission of delivering nothing but the very best in Video game experiences in favour of churning out thin games at full price to push Amiibo. Remember when the fans here could say "well the Wii U didn't get that 3rd party game but whatever, it looks rushed and empty of love, we'll stick with Nintendo which takes their time and delivers nothing but the best" We can't even say that anymore.
I'm really hoping that Nintendo can figure out those supply chain issues and get more amiibo out in stores. Then again, Play-asia is the only store that actually seems to always have their stock filled with rare ones...
@Mrclaycoat We can still say that - Nintendo still delays titles to ensure they are of a high quality (Xenoblade X, Star Fox, Zelda...)
It's true that they have released a few rushed games, presumably to fill gaps in their release calendar. I wish instead they'd release smaller, downloadable exclusives (not free-to-start) as they've done with Harmoknight, Dillon's Rolling Western, BOXBOY!, Pullblox, Hydroventure, Pocket Football Club, etc. - these games are at varied price points with varied play styles and can never be 'let downs' as rushed full price games can be.
@Viagro Yes, if they released a slew of small scale games that were wonderful to play, then yes I'd be over the moon. Dillon's Rolling Western for example was a wonderful game that I really enjoyed. Xenoblade X is being polished and will impress of course, it's just everything else, literally everything else they are offering this holiday season that is embarrassing. And that's the point as one potentially amazing game in a sea of rushed uninspired games doesn't seem like the Nintendo we knew and could brag about. But now seriously, let's petition a new Dillion's rolling Western for the Wii U!!!
@Captain_Gonru While true, I'd venture a guess and say both those games didn't sell tons of copies (even though Woolly World is brilliant). Sure you can use the Yarn Yoshi's like other Yoshi's, but no one but diehards are going to buy all 4. I have one yarn yoshi, I don't see a reason to buy the rest, (maybe mega, but he's really pricey here). Again with Amiibo Festival, HHD are the only games that AC amiibo really work in, and we know how poorly received Amiibo Festival was received, and HHD can use the cards, so the amiibo are not as fetch worthy. I bought one AC amiibo, but mostly to collect. I'd imagine the majority of people who bought them did the same, also Nintendo could be doing much better at supplying these amiibo, since they knew their releases we closer to Xmas.
A few weeks ago when Nitneod released that Christmas morning commercial w/ Spaltoon, SSBU adn SMM I noticed there was a definite lack of amiibo in it, especially since all 3 of those games are amiibo compatible. Heck, SSBU is the game that started it all. And even worse at the 12 cond mark the Wii U is on a table covered by junk that coudl haveeasily bne repalced by amiibo.

So I knew an amiibo commercial had to be coming. But as @PinkSpider said, who created this monstrosity? Total Fail. They just released Mario Tennis. In Mario Tennis you play doubles w/ your amiibo - an actual 2 player team with your amiibo as your partner - and the game isn't even in the ad. In Yoshi's Wooly World if you have a Yarn Yoshi he pays alongside you as well. Did Disney and Activision make this commeical for them? it's hideous.
I really liked that Christmas morning commercial - 2 of the 3 games come in the Smash Spalt bundle and the other is well marketed SMM. But this is just really bad. They shouldn't have even made it. Apparently there is such a thing as bad marketing. So so bad.
Just watched it again. Worse the 2nd time. Half the commercial is based on 3DS usage with HHD and they don't even show the $20 portal for the old 3DS family of systems. I even read all the fine print and it wasn't in there. Yes, the guy did say "new 3DS XL" really fast, but this is a commercial geared towards kids, and kids in the US have the 2DS, the 2DS needs the portal, there is no "new 2DS". Epic fail.
Starfox has been delayed to give it more of the Amiibo treatment. Not just to spice up the graphics.
Nintendo are shooting themselves in the long term foot.
@Captain_Gonru amiibo are mercurial. Nintnedo coudln't make enough of them at the start, then they finally got around to making enough but they aren't selling. Question is why?
1. Scalpers were buying them all up and have moved on? I'm sure at some point scalpers get bored and move on. Or Ntineod makes too many to buy.
2. SM line was a big mistake. People stopped buying those almost before they bought them, what a waste.
3. People already bought the ones they want? Does the general public really want a Chibi Robo amiibo? Or even Animal Crossing? I know AC has a cult like following, but the general public is more likely to want Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach then KK Slider and Mabel or whoever. Tom Nook makes me think of Tom Bombadil.
4. Have the public decided they are worthless as DLC? Maybe all the parents bought them for kids, or even for themselves, but they really are nothing like Disney or Skylanders in game as this abomination of a commercial shows.
Whatever the reason, the selling has slowed. Maybe people are just burned out on toys-to-life? Plenty of stock of all 4 - DI, Sky, Lego D, amiibo - in Toys R Us.
But Nintnedo does seem to be "all in", and that could potentially be a problem. My biggest problem w/ amiibo for Ntineod since before they released was limited IP. Who do they sell after the SSB line? AC never dawned on me, didn't think thy were popular enough. Pokemon is the smart bet, but over 700? My kids think all 700 in Pokken Tournament could sell. My problem with that is, Nintneod sucks at programming. They have amiibo skins in SMM, but only the 8 bit levels? Why not all 4? So how long would it take them to program all 700 in Pokken? 350 years at 2 per year? I do think the Pokemon line will come, maybe 20 started and 10 Legendarires, but then what? I got nothing. Yokai Watch? They should have put Goku instead of Cloud and make all of DB into amiibo.
Disney owns Star Wars and Marvel and Pixar and Classic Disney and 80's Disney and the Muppets and Winnie the Pooh, who knows what else they could license. Skyaldners keeps making them up as they go along. Lego D seems to license anything boys like, and the Wizard of Oz for girls. What does Nintendo have? Sega is a probably, they need Sonic on board, bu tI'm not convinced.
Nintendo can't match this going forward:
They could of done more to show it off. I can get not showing Code name STEAM since any Fire Emblem character is currently ghost at the store, but they can at least show that Inkling unlocking new stages in Splatoon, Yarn Yoshi for a second player in Wooly World, or Chibi Robo.
I think amiibo still sells, it's just that now the production and shipping number increased to the point where we don't see the latest waves sold out within minutes or insane prices on ebay and amazon as much. Most of the driving force of amiibo sales was the rarity of it, how else would 2nd wave pre-orders, WTF and Village get sold out shortly after the news Nintendo may discontinue certain amiibo in the future.
I have gotten more value from my World of Nintendo 4" Link Action Figure I found at Target than any of the amiibo have given me. So far, my Amiibo have only managed a Spinner weapon in Hyrule Warriors, Two skins for MK8, and two demos for games I already owned. The Action Figure on the other hand has joined me on multiple trips so that my children can follow the Adventures of Link as I am on the road for extended periods of time.
'Tis the season to discover the power inside
.... Because, erm, we don't really have any games. Sorry!
"Still no Skylanders-style game to use them in, huh? Kay, pass."

My son loves collecting the amiibo and I remember all of you complaining that you could never find the ones you wanted. Now that Nintendo is no longer having stock issues you complain about that.
I just don't like how amiibo is being shoved in peoples faces, more and more seem like they really are needed then not, then ya got useless ones like the Shadow Mewtwo card that just unlocks him early...
Little surprise they didn't show off Chibi-Robo or the Yarn Yoshi amiibo. Don't get me wrong, I understand that while the latest Chibi-Robo game is a pretty mixed bag, it's still something unique and the bundle version of the game is plentiful from what I can see, so why not try to sell that off? Instead they just showed off a couple of Smash Bros (Just Link and Pikachu, but according to the Nintendo briefing, Link is apparently the best selling amiibo here in the US.), the AC figures and the cards, the Splatoon (They didn't even show off the game or what they can unlock tho) the Super Mario series and the 8-Bit Mario.
I love amiibo, no doubt about it. I will say that stock has been getting better. Toys R Us, Best Buy and Game Stops around me do have full shelves of figures and restocks of some of the rarer characters are easier to come by. Target and Walmart, not so much really. They do feel lacking compared to those 3. It's nothing like it was before when amiibomania started. The only recent amiibo that I know sold out quickly was Mega Yarn Yoshi, but that's because of limited stock of MYY.
@Captain_Gonru I'm still waiting for Pokepark 3. FYI thefist gma eonly let you play as Pikachiu, the 2nd lt you play st Pikachu and the 3 starters from the Unova region, and it was a far superior game in general. Pokepark 3, give you Pikachu, buy the rest as amiibo. I kind of see it as a Supe rMysery Dungeon on Wii U. Well I don tactually know anything baut mystery dungeon so I could be totally wrong. They could do 700 cards - aren't they doing almost that many for AC?
Oh, I know this is a week old, I check theinternet on vacation, but not email. About 130 more emails to go. Mostly BF sales so they can be deleted quickly.
