Nintendo, as is the norm, waited until just before the E3 doors opened before kicking off its announcements and events. There was a 25 minute showcase followed by extensive Nintendo Treehouse demonstrations and reveals, and then the Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational to wrap things up. There were surprises, not just in the games revealed but also the manner in which Nintendo unveiled them.
We'll have some thoughts on that with you soon, but if you're catching up and struggling to pick up all of the news that came out of E3 in day one, consider this a handy guide. Below we'll include the full day's broadcast but also links to our articles that have collected all of the key videos, and of course links to all of our key E3 news stories to date.

MARIO!!!
Mariooo... !!!
Best part was Pokemon IMO. I would have liked to see the Odyssey trailer, but I closed my eyes for that part to avoid spoilers, lol.
MaRiO!|!!
I liked the balance between 2017 releases (Arms, Splatoon 2, XB2, Mario, Skyrim, Fifa, Rabbids, Fire Emblem Warriors and Metroid 3DS) and the 2018/beyond teases (core Pokemon, Metroid Prime 4, Yoshi, Kirby, and core Fire Emblem). I'm happy right now, I'm gonna be happy in the fall and 2018 should continue the good times.
Oh wow. 8 and a half hours of video is nothing to scoff at!
@crackafreeze I doubt another 3DS or Switch surprise announcement but I could also see the Virtual Console being one of the final things they announce. That 25min spotlight had a lot in it but no VC. Or, it could be more announcements around Indie games. Wargroove has peaked my interest.
I think Nintendo did not want to show Metroid prime 4 because it would have stolen the show and they want people to focus on Mario. I bet by winter we have a direct with some game footage.
Waaaahoooooo
I think the big story here is how capcom has walked away from Nintendo.
No MHW or MvsC just adds more capcom titles skipping the switch!
@Lord MHW is skipping Switch because Switch still has the "real" MH (XX) as 3DS/Switch exclusive (in Japan (the only place that actually matters for MH.))
Not fair yet to say if Capcom is abandoning Nintendo with MH, or if Capcom is merely abandoning the West with MH. If Switch gets another Japan exclusive MH on Switch next year, that's still the only MH that actually matters. The bigger news story here is that it looks like "real" core MH, which is to say portable local coop MH with quirky felynes and desk clerks, is no longer going to be localized for the West (on any platform.) The Japan-only Switch & 3DS MH will sell circles around the worldwide Worlds, guaranteed. So business-wise everything seems ok there. It just stinks for us!
Capcom has said they intend to support Switch strongly. It may not look like it from here, but even if the only thing they do is a Japan-only exclusive "real" MH every other year, that's still massive support. We just aren't part of it so far.
It's a shame that the 2D Metroid game is only on 3DS... once I get through my backlog this Summer, I am retiring my 3DS and buying a Switch... I would probably play it on the Switch even though I've never been really into Metroid, but I'm not buying any more titles for 3DS.
@hendie001 they didn't show more of Metroid because they have nothing to show, or else it would have been shown. And to be quite honest, what they did show already stole the event from Mario. Non-Nintendo sites are talking about Prime 4 as much as or more than Odyssey.
Anyways, Prime 4 won't be released for years. Maybe even towards the end of Switch's lifetime.
To me, this wasn't Nintendo's best E3. The worst? HECK NO. This is definitely one of the better ones in years, for sure. If Smash 4 for Switch, F-Zero, and VC were announced, then yes, this would have been the best E3. That being said I'm pretty happy about what was announced.
I'm a very happy Switch owner. I'm looking forward to Mario of course, although I don't think I've every completed a 3D Mario. Same with the metroid prime series , but of course that will be a day one purchase.
I'm also happy with yoshi and Kirby games , they look fun and prefect for Dad gaming. Yay!
Odyssey looks like it has depth, which is fantastic. There's also the Zelda DLC that I can't wait for.
Otherwise, some glimpses of things to come and the feeling that there has been a shift (thank goodness) away from the somewhat mediocre effors of amiibo Festival, Ultra Smash, etc to providing deeper experiences. That's a thumbs up. Third party support is there and though it might not include everything, it's about as good as I could expect given the rampant lead that the other two consoles have this late in a generation. Switch is now much more clearly, in my mind, a different proposition. That's good in my book, great for variety.
Edit: Forgot to say that the commentators for the Splatoon event were really good. Felt like a serious effort to showcase it as an esport.
Nintendo has impressed my with First party and exclusives. I am still hoping for another Nindie and/or 3rd party section. There are still A lot of games I would love to double dip on just to play them portabley.
I admit that I am very salty about there not being MH XX for the west so this E3 was just okay for me. Nintendo won but not by much in my personal opinion. I am very happy for 2018 though.
E3 has been excellent as a Nintendo fan. Even if COD and Monster Hunter have blanked the Switch, which isn't good enough on their parts, Nintendo's exclusives wipe the floor with the opposition, again. Zelda and Mario should be getting the one-two for Game of the Year - only a dishonest panel can stop Zelda getting number one unless Mario is perfect.
I'm okay to wait and hear about virtual console in a Direct. We are all on information overload anyway and I know I only expected to hear about half of what was shown. Pretty impressive E3 so far.
@gatorboi352
Oh, really ?!
Hm....
Metroid 4 will be released as soon as possible.
Wahooo
No Animal Crossing announced :I
It was a solid E3 for sure, it only sucks we have no VC, no third parties and we still don't know what Retro's up to and if Pikmin 4 on Swich is an actual thing. But how can I complain when we had two Metroid games announced un the span of an hour?
Another thing I was thinking about is Switch "risks" to have the strongest start ever among Nintendo consoles. I mean, assuming we got MP4, Pokémon and the rumoured Sm4sh by the end of 2018, the first 1.5 year lineup would sound something like this:
Zelda, Mario, Smash, Mario Kart, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Splatoon, Yoshi and Kirby. The biggest IP's, and all of them in 1.5 years from launch. It's mind blowing.
Add to that a new promising IP like ARMS, solid if not system selling games like Xenoblade Pokken, M+R: KB and FEH, and maybe Pikmin 4 and a new Animal Crossing, and you realize Ninty's put a lot pf effort in making the Switch a success by bringing out all the big guns.

@UK-Nintendo
Is that the Official cover for Super Mario Odyssey ?
If they would just announce a new Animal Crossing I would truly lose my sh*t.
@Anti-Matter I'm not too sure of its official
Microsoft had 40-odd games to show at its conference for Xbox One/Xbox One X, 20-odd of which were "exclusives" in one form or another (as I recall).
It looked like Sony had about 20 plus, including some good support for the PSVR.
Wait. . . . Did Nintendo only have 7 Switch games in total in its Spotlight, or did it show of 7 brand new Switch games along with a bunch of other ones we already know about? And, does that number include the games that were literally nothing other than a [likely] placeholder logo or some words saying a new game in a particular franchise was coming at some unknown time in the future. The number felt low to me as I was watching the show, but was it really only 7 games? It felt like maybe there was around 10 games shown in total to me.
i was very disappointed, really. almost no surprises. i was hoping for animal crossing mention, more talk about monster hunter, virtual console details, gamecube support, maybe something to do with melee, details on smash deluxe (switch), f-zero (yeah, i can dream)...
splatoon 2 is great, mario is great, and zelda dlc is great, so is fire emblem and xenoblade if they're you're thing - but the thing is.... we already knew about them. the only surprise announcements were what you could only barely call teasers because there was nothing to show. nice to know prime 4 and pokemon is coming, but would've been nice to have gotten the same treatment for animal crossing.
i duno man, seems like they kinda phoned this one in.
@Ledgendt Good link, I heard from Cavalier parts of that but hadn't seen the full thing. Mostly confirms some things I said in the MHU thread. Capcom is digging themselves very very deep, and is serious trouble with this, and my take-away as they play both sides remains unchanged. Everything here is likely true, but it might mean "true" MH is dead in the west (I can't see them doing "portable MH" and localizing it if XX is not being localized.) The nasty QTE one might be the one we get stuck with from now on.
It's also unsettling (but very believable) that Sony would draft contracts not for exclusivity, but for specific platform exclusion. That's a very dangerous path to be getting into and makes me wonder how long its been going on.
@Anti-Matter It'll be years. If they're showing "in development" without a trailer or a release year, it means it's very early in development still. They just wanted us to know it's confirmed and they're working on it (to shut the complainers up ) , but the missing details tell us this is a super early reveal for something that won't be ready for some time.
@Anti-Matter "Metroid 4 will be released as soon as possible."
Of course it will. But it's also being handled by a new developer and Nintendo is notorious for not only meticulously hand holding development as well as pushing release dates back.
EDIT: Yeah, basically what @NEStalgia said.
I've seen several people over the past day or so say they want to retire their 3DS's and get a Switch. I'm likely to be playing mine until it dies and they stop repairing them. It's my favorite handheld of all time. Can't wait for Metroid in a few months! Gonna grab the special edition if it's a good price.
That said, I can't wait for what's around the corner on Switch. Odyssey looks fantastic!
@gatorboi352
Notorious Nintendo ?!
Are you nuts ?!
@NEStalgia was it necessary to make the same exact point four times in that rambling paragraph of yours?
Super Luigi Odyssey!
@NEStalgia Capcom said MHW is essentially MH5. That sounds core to me.
Very, very impressed. Anyone who thinks this isn't a three way console war is delusional at this point.
