Hold onto your arm cannons. Today Nintendo announced that a remake / reimagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus is coming to the 3DS later this year. During the Nintendo Treehouse live stream, President of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimé took the mic to say, "I have a nice little suprise".
What nobody expected was a reimagining of the second Metroid game; aptly titled Metroid: Samus Returns. The game is due for release on 15th September 2017 for the 3DS and is being developed by MercurySteam. To breathe in all the Metroid-goodness, you can view the trailer below:
This news is even more interesting considering Nintendo recently shutdown fan project "AM2R" which was intent on remaking the Game Boy title themselves. We exclusively revealed that MercurySteam had pitched a Metroid prototype to Nintendo on 3DS a while back, something the studio itself denied.
In addition there'll be a special edition, along with new amiibo for the game (their functionality wasn't confirmed). The special edition will include a soundtrack among its goodies.
Also today Metroid Prime 4 was finally confirmed that development is underway with no date given for release.
Are you thrilled with these Metroid announcements?

Seriously, I want nothing more than to put my 3DS away for good, but Nintendo insists on continuing to develop phenomenal games for it. I guess it's not such a bad problem, but I was severely surprised by this announcement. Truth be told, I'm actually thrilled to revisit Metroid II, especially since they are giving it the Zero Mission treatment. My only question is, why did it take them so long to do a 2.5D Metroid game like this? I've been wanting one ever since the ancient rumors of Metroid Dread for the original DS.
TWO METROIDS!!!!!
Also squishy metroid amiibo!
How to Win E3 101
Huh, well look at that, a hole just burned through my wallet when I saw the amiibo.
Unfortunately it's made my MercurySteam. I feel like the animation suffers from the same sort of stiff animation as their previous Castlevania game. Also, it has no atmosphere.
The swatting mechanic seems overused as well. Just watching the bit of treehouse stream it looks like you have to swat damn near everything all the time.
Blessed are the gods!
Anyone still angry about Federation Force?
2 metroid games at once. This is madness! Madness I tell you!
Oh, Reggie... That's quite a surprise you've unzipped....
I'm new to metriod but this looks great, will pick up for sure!
2 new Metroid games announced in the span of an hour. I think Nintendo won E3.
Insta-buy.
MercurySteam? Didn't they make the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games?
I am glad we have two new Metroid games to enjoy! Thank you, Nintendo!
@PlywoodStick Dude. Lol. 😂
Metroid wins E3
People are "forgiving" Nintendo for putting AM2R in the bin because they made these announcements. I guess cease-and-desists of high-profile fan games aren't damaging to the companies' bottom lines after all. The internet lied to me.
@vincentgoodwin They did.
I wasn't impressed with the opening cut scenes, but the gameplay... wow that is looking good!
This looks like it could be to Metroid II what Metrod: Zero Mission is to Metroid I. I can't wait. I could never really get into the first two games as they lack a map system among other features Metroid games and their derivatives are known for nowadays. This is high on my wishlist.
Took Nintendo long enough. They could have made this game back during the WiiWare days.....
I can see Mercury Steam's shortcomings here in the game, but if it plays well under Nintendo's direction I'm willing to overlook that, and hopefully enjoy the game.
Those amiibo though, hnngh.
Heck yeah. Definite buy. Needed a new pair of pants after watching it, even if it is just an upgraded remake.
Well crap. I said I was done with 3ds but then they release amiibos AND special editions of this...
Anybody knows if pre-orders are up for this? US only. Thanks!!!!
@Mommar
Atmosphere? The planet probably has one but not one suitable for human life!
This is great! More Metroid than we've had in years and actually looks decent. Now just cut all ties to FF and make it non canon.
That Special Edition (please let there be a European version) and amiibos are for me!
Omg! Not one but two Metroid titles to look forward to! It's like Christmas!
Nintendo are back. I hope more & more people are sitting up & paying attention
While I'm sure interested I'm worried that it's being developed by Mercury Steam.
Nintendo please stop outsourcing and develop another Metroid masterpiece like Super Metroid.
2D Metroid!! 2D METROID!!! Heck, Prime 4 can get stuffed, 2D metroid is where it's at!
I REALLY thought I could put 3DS away after I'm done with DQ7/8. Now.....now I need to keep it out. Ugh, I really wanted to be done with 3DS. But this pretty much just killed my interest in Axiom Verge.
(Wait, no DQ11 announcements for the west on ANY platform! Now I'm bummed.)
I'm also excited that it's developed by MercurySteam. They did a great job with the 3DS Castlevania IMO. They bridged old platformer and igavania fairly well. the game was too short by half at least, but that's Konami's budgeting, not Nintendo.
YAY!!! LET'S LICK REGGIE
Wasn't there a rumor going around before E3 saying there were two Metroid games to be coming out? Whoever said that was right!!
This will be my first foray into the world of Metroid. This is a sweet, sweet E3.
NINTENDO STOP! YOU ALREADY WON!!!
THE 3DS LIVES OOOOON!
Will buy all, day one.
really cool amiibo already sold out lol (yes I know they havent been listed yet)
YES! This already looks a million times better than Federation Farce ever did.
Reggie keep those surprises coming but please have them come out next year as my poor wallet can't take it anymore.
@RyanSilberman
No doubt! Like a homerun derby where only one hitter showed up .
@NEStalgia I actually loved the 3DS Castlevania - not a popular opinion I know (agree it was short). Guessing some people at Nintendo did too, since they let the devs take on Metroid.
That amiibo is MINE.
I left the live chat after the presentation ended. I came back and saw this and was like WHAT.
@Emperor-Palpsy Yeah, you thought Luke was yours too, but you ended up getting thrown down a hole.
@Exy the internet does it a lot.
People need to come back down to Earth.
Metroid Prime 4, ZERO footage. It will be a first person game. I wanted 3rd person. The Prime series lacks so much being in 1st person.
Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of a Gameboy game. Made by some B rate studio in Spain on a machine that is being put out to pasture.
This is my opinion so don't take offense please. I'm sure some or maybe a lot of people will be happy with this. I'd like a NEW 2D Metroid game, but put on the new console, not one that is dying. It would also benefit from beautiful HD graphics. And I'd like the new 3D game in 3rd person, maybe marrying the best of the Prime series and Other M.
Looks really great. Will be getting this for sure.
This is a dream come true, I've never been so happy after an E3! Please guys, to all the people that still have doubts I understand, but give this game a chance.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's been about 7 years since the last main series Metroid game and 10 since the last Prime. Confirmation is enough for now.
And I'm pretty sure a lot of fans wanted an official remake of Metroid II. Myself included.
September 15th?! Happy birthday to me!!
While waiting for more Switch games I have to play more incredible 3DS games. Whilst waiting for incredible 3DS games I have to play outstanding Switch games. And that is why I will always love Nintendo!!! Bring on the summer of love!!! (And Autumn and winter and spring.....)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE A remake of a game I could never enjoy on a black and white screen. I will gladly take it.
Very thrilled, when can I preorder?
Nintendo is full of win today! The remake looks great and knowing that Prime4 is in the pipeline shows they havent forgotten about Samus.
I am hyped for the rest of the year. Starting with ARMs this friday, the software keeps coming regularly until the beautiful Super Mario Odyssey in late October. Debbie Downers can pound their chest all they want, these reveals are wonderful.
Awesome news. I haven't touched my 3DS this year.
Quite possibly my favorite announcement of E3
Yes! This is the kind of remake I was drooling for from Metroid II.
This right here is what won me over more than anything else this E3. When they dropped Prime 4, I had a moment of disappoimtment that we wouldnt be getting a 2D Metroid. Very rarely do I pre-order anything, but I'd love those amiibos and soundtrack more than anything else.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE A remake of an almost 26 year old game (so many gamers don't know it), with completely new gameplay and aesthetics. I don't know about you, but after so much demand from fans for a "proper Metroid game" the least people can do is give the game a chance, specially with so much risk of death of the franchise.
Mayve they didn't show anything about Metroid Prime 4, but after so much wait of course people will be exited. They did the same with Smash 4 and it turned out great.
Sure, Metroid games lose some elements when turned in to first person, but also gain other elements. I love th 2d games more, but I'm able to enjoy both for what they are.
Looks like I'll be adding one more 3DS title to my collection after all.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "This is my opinion. I'm sure some or maybe a lot of people will be happy with this. I'd like a NEW 2D Metroid game, but put on the new console, not one that is dying."
There are many many times I disagree with you either in part or in full, but the above comment I'll join your unpopular opinion regarding 2D Metroid. I'm thrilled with this game, but I do wish it were on Switch, and were all new. I like what it is, and I'll take it, but it would have been better if it were as you say. 2D Metroid all day, every day!
As for Prime....I also kind of have to agree that I'd prefer the series be 3rd person than 1st person, as I think it could have been a more fun game that way, HOWEVER, I do recognize Prime is and has always been 1st person, it's what the series is so my personal preference for a 3rd person camera aside, I just want Prime 4 to be the best Prime it can be.
@admwllms Absolutely, the gameplay and environment was one of the best (and best looking 3D uses) on the 3DS. My only problem with the game was I wanted more of it and it wasn't there. Other than that, I definitely share that unpopular opinion. This Metroid is kind of our revenge: We get more of their overall game design in 3D one last time
Nintendo's plan for extending the life of the 3DS seems to be to outsource 3DS remakes/sequels in some of their biggest franchises to small studios while they keep their internal talent focused on developing for the Switch. I have no issues with that so long as the 3DS games are decent.
This one (as well as Hey! Pikmin) is high on my radar but I will wait for reviews before buying. NO pre-orders for me.
@Giygas_95 Don't get me wrong it's not bad. Zero Mission was great after all. I'd just have preferred an all new game.
I can't believe it I'm so excited
I'M LOSING MY MIND! Metroid II was one of my favorite games as a kid on the original Gameboy and a remake is an absolute dream (I thought RM2K was all I was ever gonna get)! So excited to revisit this world, especially on my old boy 3DS! And new Metroid Amiibo too? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? WOOOHOO!
Thanks nintendo!
@-Green- Someone had to say it!
Yes, pure WIN.
I knew if I feigned disinterest in this year's E3 it would be a stonker! That was my plan all along! 😀 I hope this game turns out great, and my plan not to purchase any more amiibos has just been laid to rest
There are so many more talented developers out there who would of done a better job at this game.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Wait, people need to come back down to Earth because you wanted a 3rd person Metroid?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yeah, I can understand that because like I said in the chat, I'd like to see what happens after Fusion since its been 15 years since that game launched. But I really did want an official Metroid 2 remake, and the fact it's on 3DS doesn't bother me personally because it's my favorite handheld of all time.
About Prime 4 though, just knowing they're making it is enough for me for right now. I would have loved to have seen footage too though, but it's clearly very early in development.
I wasn't expecting too much from E3, but Nintendo blew my mind and took my money.
This game looks fantastic. Great combat and presentation. MercurySteam apparently outdid itself with this.
Why won't Nintendo let me put my 3DS away ever? It's insane to have a GROWING backlog on my retired console!
@Mommar
That was the first thing that caught my attention! I haven't been impressed by Mercury Steam at all, and the gameplay made me think of Other M. I wouldn't get too excited, folks. Remember how excited you were when you first saw gameplay for that? Why does Nintendo insist on not doing these games themselves? This is one of their most beloved franchises, for crying out loud! Do it yourselves!
It's a shame this isn't coming to Switch, hopefully if it does well (and is well made) Nintendo will let MercurySteam loose on an original 2D Metroid game.
AM2R was one of my GOTYs last year, so we could be in the surreal situation where Metroid II is my GOTY for two years in a row!
Their first Castlevania was really good but I have heard the other two are a bit ropey, so hopefully Nintendo's guiding hand helps make this one great. I would almost put money on it coming to Switch at a later date though.
@thesilverbrick Well, now there's a new 2.5D Metroid engine. Let's hope they'll continue to use it for future projects.
@BionicDodo Yes.
I feel increasingly smug about having always believed the 3DS wasn't anywhere near dead.
Ya, I've been ready to leave 3DS in the dust. It's my favorite platform ever (or, was, until PS4 gained traction and now Switch looks to overtake the both of them), but once you taste the sweet nectar of Switch it's hard to go back.
That said, I'm gonna play the heck out of this game. Wow! Metroid Prime 4 and a 2D Metroid on the same day... unreal.
❤️🍺🐛
@RupeeClock Define. I'm not familiar.
@Kayfios I'd love to see Super Metroid and Fusion eventually get this treatment, but on Switch instead of 3DS.
Boidoh was pulling for there being no Metroid. Like, practically begging.
Now he's been rekt twice over. I can't help but laugh. xD
@SLIGEACH_EIRE lol mate. Everyone's been crying out for Metroid Prime 4, just be grateful we're getting an entirely new Metroid at all and not some spin-off or remake. They could've easily just thrown out a 3D remake of Super Metroid to keep us all happy. Campaign for a return to roots style Metroid can start at a later date. Anyway, I thought Other M already took the best of Prime and mixed it with a new style...?
Don't think I'll get the Samus amiibo, since it's just a different pose to the Smash one. Metroid one is must though
@PlywoodStick Filth! lol
I wish this came to Switch, though that would have probably involved a huge graphics update, and would likely not be released this year (September 15th to be precise).
I guess there will be at least one 3DS game that I will buy this year.
I want this for the switch also. Dont care if the graphics stay the same.
Why this wasn't in the direct itself, I don't know, but I took a glance at the gameplay and I'm just crying... Tears of joy that is, welcome back Metroid.
MercurySteam is a buzzword as far as I'm concerned but the trailer and gameplay do look legit.
@JaxonH Same, 3DS was my all time favorite, surpassing SNES after all those years. PS4 was always back burner behind it, and often even WiiU, but Switch in a few months has just crushed every console that came before it.
It kills me to have to take the 3DS or PS4 out for those games I just have to play
Bit I'm not clear on, is it 3DS or New 3DS?
Shoot..... Now, I have to pick between this and Fire Emblem Echoes for my holiday game for this year......
Good show Nintendo...give a very nice remake to tide users over and tempt them to buy a switch and/or Metroid Prime 4. They did the same with Fire Emblem. Doesn't burn the 3ds users but primes them to move on as well.
Ok, first of all - look at my little profile photo.
Yeah.
Second: I would prefer a sprited graphics metroid - because the 3D in Xenodrifter made me want so.
Third: but I will gladly get that 2.5D and cry in fetal position, yelling 'Reggie" whilst squishing that amiibo.
I'm preordering this ASAP. I wouldn't trust Mercury Steam with any franchise, let alone Metroid, but I have to vote with my wallet here. Besides, there's always Prime 4.
I was a little concerned when I read that MercurySteam was involved (they haven't exactly been super-respectful when resurrecting previous franchises ahem), but seeing the game in motion left me with a great impression. Not 100% sold on the presentation yet (is it me or does Samus look a bit... off?), but I'm definitely giving this one the benefit of the doubt.
Definitely would have preferred 2D graphics over 3D, but we can't have it all now, can we?
The immortal 3DS, rejoice.
great news, instant buy for me. Long live the 3DS!
As someone who finds Metroid 2 to be just as unplayable as Metroid 1, it's good that it's getting the Zero Mission treatment as well.
@Lameborghini
Dragon Quest XI (If the idiots at SquEnix get a grip)
Etrian Odyssey V
Ever Oasis
Hey! Pikmin
Monster Hunter Stories
Monster Hunter XX (If the idiots at Capcom get a grip)
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Radiant Historia
Two River City games
SMT: Strange Journey Redux
... And now this! Plenty to play on the 3DS this year
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree, this should've been put on switch, even though I don't own one, or plan to own one for awhile. Overall, this E3 taught me three things: I don't need a Switch yet, i don't need a One X, and I'll probably be trading in my PS4 for a Pro next year.
Nothing on Switch at the moment has really convinced me it's a must have. Mario Odyssey looks good, so does XC2, but i have backlogs on 3 systems that I'd rather get through before diving into a new ecosystem. The games aren't going anywhere, they'll still be around in 2019, as will the switch.
Wwwwwhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy Nintendo?!!!!????!!!!! Why?! For f**k sake couldn't they do something proper for once? people are craving for Metroid games for years and then Nintendo comes and releases a remake on a 6(!) years old system. They always seem to do those half assed moves instead of going all out balls to the walls. Have mercy on us! Put the 3DS to sleep already and focus on the future.
Dear Nintendo.
Add a RIdley amiibo to the line and I can die happy.
@GraveLordXD
Not going to lie, I have the exact same fears...
but why metroid 2... and not start with 1
@slatanek
I know right, the absolute HORROR of being able to buy a game for a system you already own! I mean, aren't we all DYING to spend money on a new generation of consoles when the current one is doing just fine?
/s
So that's why Amr2 got them angry... But those amiibos!!! I know it's just the prettier prototypes, but daiyum!
I wish it wasn't Prime though... I don't like much that spinoff. Metroid 2 3d heck yeah!
@TheGameSquid I mean I have both systems but at this point the 3DS looks just old (in a bad way). Its a great system for what it was, but it has to die at some point. And I just can't understand why wouldn't they release this game on both systems? Seriously, the Switch needs to be sucessfull. If it is not we might not see another Nintendo console EVER, so the stakes are high. And I know people would play the poo out of this on the Switch. Instead Nintendo chooses to support a system that is light years behind technology wise which BTW has such a rich library of great games that it just doesn't need anymore. The Switch on the other hand really needs those games, Nintendo cult franchises I mean.
Is THIS why they shut down AM2R?!
I'm over the moon about this and Prime 4, well played Nintendo, well played
I'm still irked that they shut down AM2R but at least they let the game be finished. Honestly I feel like this is a game that was made largely because AM2R showed that there was fan interest in Metroid II. I loved AM2R, and I'm sure I'll love this too. Might be the first game to make me play my 3DS since I got my Switch.
Safe to say that both talk of the demise of the 3ds , and concerns over the length of Nintendo's E3 presentation were effectively squashed today.
Hard to top AM2R but I'll give it a chance, Metroid needs sales.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Admittedly, I don't always agree with some of your posts but on Metroid I think we share some common ground. While I'm totally optimistic about the Metroid news released today and excited to play a remake of the only Metroid I didn't beat, I'm really hoping Prime 4 has a 3rd person view and takes some elements from Other M (evasion mechanics, close quarter finishers).
I liked Other M a lot and believe 1st person only Metroids are limited. Here's hoping that this new dev team will bring these features to Prime 4!
@Tanooki12 Probably. Nintendo only sends their ninja lawyers out in case of one of the fallowing:
A: Making an unauthorized version of one of their series using elements that will damage Nintendo's reputation (Pokemon Fusion is a prime example)
B: Using one of their franchises in a fan game and selling it for profit.(As long as there is no profit to be made, fan games are allowed)
C: This is optional as remakes that no one profits from is allowed, but once Nintendo decides to do a remake, then they need to be pulled.
That's the proof that Nintendo fans are not asking for something ultra-amazing, but at least something very good. Last year was a huuuge disappointment with Metroid Federation Force... because it looked like a bad or regular 3DS game.
Is Metroid II a game with amazing graphics (today) ? No. But at least looks like it gives the best experience we can have in a 3DS.
@TheGameSquid My wishlist looks quite like that
@slatanek
I don't want to sound too cynical or impolite, but if you are really that concerned about the Switch, maybe you just should have waited until it had a more solid lineup before buying one then?
Obviously the 3DS is lightyears behind technologically, but who cares? This is made in the Dream Team / Paper Jam engine, which was purpose-built for the 3DS? Who cares about horsepower?
And I'm sure people would play the shit out of it, but you know where even more people will play it? On the system with the larger install base, AKA the 3DS.
Don't get me wrong, I know you want the Switch you own to become a great platform, and I get that. But that's just part of buying into a system this early in its lifecycle. Plenty of cool games were announced for the Switch, so it'll probably be a worthwhile system to own at the end of 2017 / Start of 2018.
I was just about to have to ditch the Treehouse cos the kids were home, and this came on. Want able to listen to it all, but it looked fantastic.
A great way to keep the 3DS alive, service the Metroid fans, but not lose too much resource for the Switch.
Oh man PLEASE come to Switch!
Honestly i like the look of AM2R a lot more. 3D models on the 3DS alsways look janky.
@slatanek Switch just got Prime 4 announced while an awesome retro 2D Metroid port is coming to 3DS. I'd much have rather had it on Switch, myself, because I like using Switch more these days. But it's silly to say Nintendo shouldn't be showing love to their 60+ million 3DS customers in addition to their several million early adopting Switch customers. I'd like it on both. I'd much rather play EVERYTHING on Switch (give me Persona 5!!) but my own preferences aside, there's nothing actually wrong with them supporting their current super successful platform while they ease in its replacement. PS3/PS4 got years of support while One/PS4 edged in. SNES got years of support after N64 came out. NES still did after SNES came out. Nothing new.
But my personal whining: I wish this were on Swiiiitch!!
But Switch is fine. It's getting the bigger Metroid game, it's getting the next real Pokemon, it's getting Xenoblade and the new big Mario, and Yoshi and Kirby, and Splatoon 2, and Rabbids, and in less than 72 hours, ARMS. And Pokken. It'll survive without a 2D Metroid much as we wish it had it too.
@Mommar
I agree and love that you are able to point it out.
Mighty No9 has this as well.
There is something about that graphical look that is just unpleasant.
Still though, I'm sure the game will be fun.
It might not be a master piece, but its hard to go wrong with running jumping and shooting stuff in a Metroid suit in space.
Its also a remake of a game that was already fun, and that game hade severe problems in many ways.
So to conclude, this could've and should've been better done, but lets just buy this but make sure we make our voices heard so that they can fix the next Switch version.
Because at this point, if we don't buy it, we'll never see Metroid again(what has it been, like 7 years not counting Federation Force) or at least not for another x years in this form at least.
Usually I'd say speak with your money and don't buy it, but this is an edge case where we just got to make our voices heard instead, hopefully reviewers can criticize it if we make enough noice in comment sections about the crappy look/graphics
Why another Prime though, Blegh... Could've been something fresh... Like, the continuation of what happen after Metroid Fusion.
@Smokingspoon
Or Metroid: Other M.
Well the "2 Metroids" rumor came true!!! 😳
Ok Nintendo sign me up and take my money ..The only thing I'm missing is a Metroid themed new 3DS XL. 😆
"We exclusively revealed that MercurySteam had pitched a Metroid prototype to Nintendo on 3DS a while back, something the studio itself denied."
"So you're saying, categorically, you did not work on a new Metroid prototype for Wii U and 3DS?
Enric Alvarez: This is exactly what I'm saying."
Actually they denied working on a prototype for the 3DS AND Wii U, technically a true statement.
Sure, it's a 2D Metroid, but it's a remake, farmed out to a third-party, built on uninspired low-res 3D models, and riddled with amiibos and their requisite pseudo-DLC in some form.
From the gameplay in the trailer, that counter-slap could be interesting, but the dramatic slo-mo camera-panning combos/finishers seem un-Metroidy and frankly, trying too hard to be cool.
All that could add up to "Underwhelming, but who am I to judge."
That Nintendo heavy-handedly axed a well-received labor of love from the fans in order to milk us on this product of indeterminate quality, though, pushes it over the line into vaguely insulting.
I'm sure it'll be an ok game, but I doubt I'll be singing its praises from the rooftops.
As said in the other article for Metroid Prime 4, Federation Force can now be fully redeemed as a way to test Metroid fans' own fidelity.
Also, shutting down the fan remake is finally justified, although I wouldn't mind hearing Nintendo pulled a Sonic Mania and hired the guys behind the remake.
Why is this not on Switch...
@Mommar But Metroid fans still need to give the game support. I will probably buy the special edition even though I don't own a 3DS.
No offense to the AM2R fans, but this looks soooo much better. And just in time for my birthday, too!
Wohoo! I've been wanting a remake of Metroid 2 for ages. I don't know if it can top Zero Mission as my favorite 2D Metroid, but we shall see.
To bad it's for 3DS......
@MegaVel91 I don't have an issue ever since the news broke that it wasn't Retro Studios wasting their talent on MP4 and this.
@Utena-mobile I loved M:Om, Fusion comes after M:Om though.
But I guess you always add more in between
@Boidoh Grow up dude, and realize that your sense of taste is not superior to others. I love DKC as much as the next guy but good grief.
Now i see why Nintendo was so quick to shut down AM2R, somebody other than Nintendo released a remake that is better than the one they were making lol.
I'll still play it, to support the interest of making more Metroid games in the future, but damn, that's just sad Nintendo got 1-UP'd by their fans in making a remake.
@MegaVel91 If the Metroid fanatics can cry year after year about how they want a Metroid so badly I think I can complain about the lack of DKC.
@Boidoh Said the DKC fanatic who is trashing Metroid for no reason other than "-but muh DKC!" At least unlike you I didn't trash your desired franchise just because.
Really. Grow up. It sucks a new DKC wasn't announced today, but there's still hope regardless. Reggie said before the reveal of Metroid: Samus Returns that they will have more reveals over the next two days or so, so the door is still open for something like a new DKC to come about.
@MegaVel91 What if I legitimately don't think Metroid is a game franchise so good that people have been clammering for one for years on end and being so disappointed when it doesn't show up or it turns out to be a crappy spin-off?
I honestly tried to get into Metroid. I wanted to see what all this fuss was about some years ago. I think it was after they announced Blast Ball. I decided to buy Metroid for the NES, Super Metroid for SNES, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy. The NES and SNES ones were really not all that great as people made them out to be. I don't think I've beaten either since I just didn't want to play them. I also didn't really like the Prime games either. They seemed very bland and uninspired. Everywhere seemed samey and the gameplay was intuitive to me.
In fact, as much as I've shown dislike to the fact that Metroid Prime 4 was announced, given that it's not using Retro's precious time and resources, I'll probably still end up buying that and this 2D game to give it a chance ONCE AGAIN.
So no I'm not just trashing Metroid just because I want DKC. I just don't think its all that amazing to scream out in joy for off of a title screen.
Is this game in 3D or just flat 2D?
@Boidoh
As a suggestion, and I don't want to fight, just simply avoid the articles of games that don't interest you. Two Metroid games in development don't mean anything regarding the chances of a DKC being in development.
You're dissapointed that there weren't announcements that appealed to you, and that's fair. Raining on someone's else happiness isn't fair, it isn't an attitude someone who's almost an adult should have and its resembling a troll.
@Luna_110
"Two Metroid games in development don't mean anything regarding the chances of a DKC being in development."
Hence why "given that it's not using Retro's precious time and resources, I'll probably still end up buying that and this 2D game to give it a chance ONCE AGAIN."
And my whole anti-Metroid thing was going on from pre-spotlight on the live chat. I've seen many people from comments, discussions, YouTube videos, etc. express this deep annoyance that they'd have if Retro was working on "just another DKC game". If those people can have their heavy resent towards Retro working on a DKC game why couldn't I do the same towards Retro working on a Metroid game.
Post-announcement I haven't been to terribly negative on the games. I even said above that I'd be willing to give them a try even though I didn't like all the previous ones I've played.
Only 30 minutes ago I said in the Metroid Prime 4 article we need 2D Metroid. Presto, here it is. I'm more than happy with this being an update of a GB game.
This game looks incredible but why couldn't it be on Switch too?
Hey guys, just remember that even though it's by the people that did the Castlevania on 3DS, that was overseen by Konami. This may be the same development team but it's being overseen by Nintendo this time.
(Mic drop...)
@Fath
That Nintendo heavy-handedly axed a well-received labor of love from the fans in order to milk us on this product of indeterminate quality, though, pushes it over the line into vaguely insulting
Wait what?
You find it insulting that Nintendo shut down a project which was illegally using their property, because they want to remake their own game that they own?
So... Nintendo should not release a new Metroid remake, all the while allowing everyone else to capitalize off of their franchises instead of them... and you find it insulting if they don't do that?
Man I can't even begin to comprehend that logic
@WaveBoy
here's what we have...a metroid prime sequel that had zero footage and will not be coming out for over a other year, and a 2d MII remake farmed to a crappy US dev slated for release this year on a dying hand held. How exciting!
Dude. It's exciting just knowing it's coming because people have been clamoring for it for the better part of 10 years. And for all we knew it could have been another 10 years. The Internet was going nuclear today over it so yeah, that would constitute excitement.
As for "crappy US dev", it's such a cheap attempt to marginalize a game that upsets you seeing people excited for it. It's a remake. It doesn't matter who's doing it. That's why Nintendo has these studios handle remakes and not brand-new games. And the handheld very well might be dying but it's not dead yet. And until that day comes a 2D Metroid is a 2D Metroid. Something that is indeed, exceedingly exciting
Sweetness! I've never played the original version since I never owned a Gameboy so I'm quite intrigued.
MercurySteam.
Just take a breath and google it, then try to deal with your expectations.
Yes, day 1 purchase witho both of those Amiibos
@JaxonH I respect your opinion, so allow me to try not to convince you, but to get you to a point where you can at least understand me.
First off, "illegal" is far from a settled term. Fair use is a thing that exists, and not making a commercial venture out of it is a big point in the fangame's favor. You can't "capitalize" where capitalism isn't involved.
Setting that aside, I'd argue the morality of the fan remake is in-line with the morality of early Disney movies or (not to provoke a comparison of quality) many of Shakespeare's plays, in that it took an established framework and built something grand and new on top of it. Disney didn't come up with the idea of Cinderella, and Shakespeare didn't come up with the idea of Romeo and Juliet. Using an established historic work as a skeleton to build something new on is a time-honored and important artistic tradition.
And all THAT aside, there's little pragmatic reason why A2MR and Samus Returns couldn't have both coexisted in the world. I could link you to plenty of Super Mario World romhacks of full-fledged game quality and size, still prominently featuring the original characters, but that never hurt the New Super Mario Bros. games. Even though they started from the same source, I have no doubt that A2MR and Samus Returns will both be uniquely competent games on their own merits.
So while you don't have to agree, I hope you can at least see how somebody could be irked that where the world could have had two polished and unique reimaginings of the venerable Metroid 2 side-by-side, Nintendo decided to kill the one that wasn't making money for them in order to milk every last drop out of the one that was.
Interesting. AM2R set the bar pretty high, but let's see how this 2.5D takes the 2D gameplay of the franchise.
Still confused why not Metroid 5.
Also hesitant because Mirror of Fate was by no means a good 2.5D Castlevania, it was a decent Metroidvania-lite, but... Not standard-setting, yes?
Let's hope they got the job on more than the simple merit of "we already made one half of the genre founders, let us make another".
@thesilverbrick Zero mission looked much better. Im not crazy about the 3D models on this one, but who cares its a new Metroid and that is freaking fantastic. Now all they need to do is re-skin Fast Racing Neo into F-Zero and i'll shut up.
Ah, Metroid on 3DS! Sadly its just a boring looking remake made by Mercury Steam. You know, the guys who made Castlevania mirror of fates (I liked that game though). Slow, boring and with Other M elements. I still buy it and might like it, but I am not hyped. AM2R is the better option. Try to get it on the internet, one way or the other!
Oh, why can't we just get a NEW, sprite-based, fast Metroid on Switch. That could look sooooo sweet. Same with a big new 2D Zelda on Switch. Pretty please?
Strange, this is the second project that got innitially shot down. Maybe things changed now Mister Iwata is gone? I mean, first Mario vs Rabbids Wii (now on Switch). And then Mercury working on 3DS Metroid.
YEEEAAAAAGGGHHH Metroid II is and has always been my favorite Metroid game!!! This kinda looks totally different than that game, though... but I will be very happy to add another Metroid icon to my 3DS's home screen. No wait... I don't want a physical copy but I do want that CD. Life is hard. Still, this is very exciting news.
sigh
2.5D and Other M (I actually really enjoyed the game) mechanics are great.
30fps (really?)
Developed by Mercury Steam (whelp...)
on 3DS instead of Switch
Amiibos are cool at least
AM2R exists (which is a masterpiece, seriously play it)
I'm still going to buy it to support Metroid but this really does take the piss.
@rushiosan I actually enjoyed their Castlevania title on 3DS, so no problem here.
Besides, I'm getting Other M engine vibes from this, and that is by no means a bad thing (when it comes to 2D play that is, not those frickin' ridiculous pixel hunts).
@DavyP No reason to make this personal, so please watch your language. He's not breaking any rules, he's just sharing his opinion. If you don't like his posts, use the ignore button.

The game looks brilliant!. Thanks Nintendo. I just hope I can preorder that special edition before it sells out.
I am SO FINE with 2.5D whatever. It brings back the nostalgia.
@TheGameSquid I'm not worried about the Switch, I'm worried about Nintendo in general. They've just had the worst selling system in their history and I have been thru the Dreamcast death before and don't wanna witness it with another great japanese video game company again.
Look at it this way: at last Nintendo struck a long term deal with a silicon manufacturer (nVidia), which basically means it is very likely that when Switch 2 (or whatever) arrives it is gonna be backward compatible (this is so far the line nVidia is taking with the Tegra SoC's). The 3DS? Probably not gonna have a follow up. Do I want good games to be playable on the future systems? Yes. Will a game released on a 3DS have a life in 6 years time? Probably not, unless one has a 3DS system lying around. It is illogical and impractical to release a game like Metroid ONLY on the 3DS. Unless you like to rebuy the same games over and over again, cause knowing Nintendo in a few years time we'll get a 3DS VC. And everyone will be grateful for having the opportunity to spend their money on a game they already bought in the past just to replay it for nostalgia reasons.
But that's just my point of view. Please don't jump at me for having an opinion.
Looking forward to this one Probably a day one buy for me, and I don't do that often anymore because of my backlog.
I am very excited about a new 2D style Metroid game. I actually prefer 2D Metroid games, even though the prime series is awesome in it's own right.
