The announcements of various big AAA games getting cloud versions on Switch makes me believe that the Switch Pro is way more of just an incremental upgrade than a lot of people are probably expecting. I'm not expecting them to fully address the power disparity between them and PS5/Series X|S until Nintendo flat out makes a new console

All I know is I'm not trusting another Bloomberg report on this subject, or anyone else for that matter. Someone is clearly getting bogus info. Or perhaps Nintendo keep changing their plans every time someone posts them. Either way, let's just quit speculating and let Nintendo do it's thing.

If my U.S. $299 device was selling like crazy why would I introduce a refresh model that would incur higher manufacturing costs and I would have to sell at a higher price so as not to alienate previous customers?
If you want a new Nintendo System then all you have to do is convince all the current non Switch owners to not buy one and have sales tank so that Nintendo thinks the public interest has reached WiiU levels.
Once the investors think the cash cow is dead they will scream for a newer model to be released. If you want more advanced games then do the same thing which will force them to make more demanding games since they will believe their current releases to be rejected.
It's simple supply and demand. They won't release something new unless they see a good reason to and all us consumers are speaking loudly with our wallets.
Personally I don't see the point of a new more powerful handheld that's gonna burst my wallet. Power costs money, you can't get 2x powerful a device without paying for it. If I wanted a powerful handheld I would have bought one of the many options out there. I buy Nintendo for the ecosystem and I accept whatever limitations that brings with it.

A new Nintendo Switch model will not be possible do to the chip shortage. Production for new electronics will not go back to normal till late 2022. So nothing new will be announced as a result.

I probably would enjoy my Switch way more without reading on Reddit and news websites all the time.

I wanted to see the new model that was hinted at for the sake of seeing it. But actually getting a chance to buy it...eh. I'm in no rush for that. And I think the current Switch is perfectly fine as it is.

Allow me to translate that for you all...

Nintendo says:
"we’re always looking at technology. And as we know, technology is constantly evolving and changing. And we’re always looking at what is coming to determine: How can it enhance and improve the gameplay experience? And whether that’s on a current platform, or whether that’s on a future platform, we’re always looking at that."

Meaning:
No, we're NOT releasing a Switch Pro, we're simply always busy trying to find/invent/manufacture new hardware, and more importantly: new ways to play, as soon as the current generation of consoles is in stores, so we can prepare for the next generation.
So, when we say future platform, we explicitly mean the next generation of consoles, NOT an intermediate iteration.

Nintendo says:
“As we enter into our fifth year, Nintendo Switch really is redefining what a console life cycle can look like, and the vibrancy of that overall life cycle with a strong cadence of content"

Meaning:
Because of the simply MASSIVE success of the Switch, we will continue this generation for longer than we usually allow life cycles of our consoles to be, because the Switch is still selling like hot cakes, so there's no need for new hardware yet.

Do we really want an Apple model where our Switch models are made obsolete on an almost yearly basis and we are enticed to pay another $300 for some incremental additions or upgrades, where if we refuse to upgrade the software titles that are released don't work on old models because they just happen to use some aspect of the new models that is not really important to the enjoyment of the game?

@Baker1000 Tbh with how they keep selling more consoles than ever and such, I think they have cold feet about an upgrade that might run a risk of "obsoleting"(or giving the perception of it) the consoles of 80+ millions of Switch owners(which could mean a lot of angry people tbh).

Plus with chip shortages affecting the more powerful consoles the most while demand remains sky high for even just the current Switch, there's the matter that a Switch Pro could be coming only... to lack supplies at all because everyone's competing for the materials of high performance components already.

Why ship a model you wouldn't be able to produce that could ALSO peeve off your massive existing userbase when your current style of model still sell a heck ton and make plenty of the userbase perfectly happy.

I'd see the cloud gaming a bit as the other way around in fact; it's less about Nintendo needing those games(they sell consoles and games of their own by the boatloads already as it is) but more because those developers trying to pierce into the massive userbase of the Switch... especially moreso as PS5 and it's likes are still floundering because of the chip shortage, lack of supplies and scalpers.

Cloud stuff feels a lot like a compromise from devs(or at least, publishers) who try to have it both way: trying to get a presence on Switch but without wishing to make the effort of optimizing a title or making a new title that is designed for Switch in the first place while still trying to make games meant for the benefit of surplus hardware performance of the larger consoles.

I simply don’t think it’s coming any time soon because botw 2 and prime 4 are so far away.

@sixrings Honestly, seeing the graphical style of BOTW2 and looking at what's ALREADY on Switch in terms of graphics(Astral Chain in particular but there's also something to be said about the environments of Luigi's Mansion sometimes looking out of a Pixar movie).... I don't think you'll ever need a Switch Pro for BOTW2.

For one the graphics still look very close to BOTW1 and even the sky stuff has, in my opinion, likely done a thing that would likely render moot issues about performance(the key point being how we see a shot of link somehow 'teleporting' to the Sky, which tells me that it exists as it's own separate open world from the surface, the world below not being a place you can seamlessly go to but instead just a low detail version of it used as background and thus likely travelling between surface and skies done likely via loading screens or something similar to keep things easy on performance).

So if any is coming, it could literally come -after- BOTW2 rather than as a prerequisite for it.

Gotta let it go. It was never on the table. The focus is on content and getting people to buy multiple regular switches and lites

If it is "financially" feasible (which is what it all comes down to at the end of the day) then I look forward to spending my money on an upgrade if/when it comes. If not, then that room for improvement could be implemented in a hopefully "backwards compatible" Switch 2.
Until then, I will enjoy my Switch with its great library.

The "we're redefining what a console cycle looks like" is letting the cat out of the bag a bit IMO. An extension of the Switch generation as you said. But as you know I think the way to achieve that is through hardware revisions.

The rest is just standard PR speak, I mean it's literally a standard response. Nintendo probably has a block of text they plonk down when asked about new hardware. Means nothing.

@sixrings BOTW2 is likely the last game to need a Pro model, because as good as it looks, it doesn't look like it'll struggle with the current Switch hardware.

I get saying that with Metroid Prime 4, but even with that, if they wanted a better hardware yo run the game, they'd just…release it on a sequel to a Switch rather than a revision.

All these games coming out and people are still chasing a hardware unicorn. Nintendo could drop a ps5 clone tomorrow and most of the software lineup wouldn’t change.

Devs have said the install base was too small, or there weren’t enough buttons, or Nintendo gamers don’t play their games, or we need to make our voices heard (beg) and yet people think some bleeding edge console isn’t going to do more than cost Nintendo and consumers (cuz it wont be 3 hundo) money.

Devs have options for Switch: optimization, build for Switch first or cloud version and if they will run to stadia or luna or mobile but snub switch it is time to read the room. GTA V is on everything but the switch and a potato and rockstar is fine with that...why assume an upgrade (not successor) will change anything? The switch has a bevy of games for everyone...play something.

I would love a Super Switch. Too many games are still skipping the platform.

With how the switch works I do really wish there was an upgraded model to get some of the ports they've accepted looking, running and loading better. As it sits, journey to the savage planet and outer worlds are pretty rough. But with how some games look and run on here maybe it's actually just lack of determination to get them running better. That and I think JTtSP studio is defunct.

My wife gave me starlink at lunch,
I love space shooters with story so games like everspace, starlink, rebel Galaxy outlaw and the like are games I do enjoy alot, however I haven't been able to play starlink cuz mi switch always overheat and shut down so I will gladly update my current model for a better one, guess I'll have to wait 😕

I can understand Nintendo not wanting to immediately join Sony's and Microsoft's arms race, but I can immediately think of multiple ways where newer technology could enhance the experience.

1. Games developed by Monolith Soft (Xenoblade Chronicles, Zelda: Breath of the Wild) could use more consistent frame rates.
2. Omega Force (Musou/Warriors games) could divert the extra power towards better AI, higher enemy densities, and — again — smoothing out resolution and frame rate issues.
3. Fountain of Dreams in Super Smash Ultimate wouldn't have to make the trade-off between frame rate consistency and water reflection fidelity, thus making it tournament legal again.

And that's limiting it to games made by Nintendo or directly under its immediate umbrella.

Edit: Did I mention consistent frame rates? I do believe I did.

You mean using ports as crutches? Just imagine if Switch Pro exists it will actually be called Switch Plus so they can release ports of Switch games with Plus bolted on instead of doing free updates.
It’s clear all these years after Switch launched that they’ve redefined their software output due to the well publicized troubles they had with HD game development, they haven’t managed to overcome this which is why they rely on ports, with this in mind they won’t pass up the opportunity for paid upgrades/new boxed versions of Switch games, if they do that they can successfully coast along for a decade with Switch while only developing a fraction of system exclusive compared to their previous systems.

I think you've got it backwards. You can't put a Wii U disc into a Switch, to access these games they have to be ported. And if you don't remember the Wii U had a fair amount of content but very low sales. Porting from Wii U is low effort, high reward.

If they release a Switch revision there would be no reason to re-release titles that have already been ported to the Switch. They'd already be on the Switch platform. All it'd mean is suddenly the games that are already ported can run at a better framerate.

But if they don't release a Pro, if they go with a Switch successor. THAT would give them a reason to port all these titles all over again. If anything people dismissing the idea of a Switch Pro are the ones begging for more ports, not the other way around.

I read "redefining the console cycle" as "we're not doing the dump and start again cycle we've been doing since the 80s anymore". The Switch as it currently is has been a fairly traditional console cycle. What they do next will decide whether they're changing things up or not. A Switch Pro would be changing things up.

That's how I read it. With my brain elaborating the following:

"Yeah we had a Pro revision ready for mid 2020 but then the pandemic hit and then Animal Crossing sold 32 million copies and AC could run on an old Sony Clie' from 2002 so why are we launching a Pro model when we can just keep selling Switch at it's $300 launch price and just call Pro Switch 2 in a couple of years when sales eventually slow down."

Just remember Nintendo officially said there wasn't going to be a new Nintendo DS model they day before the DSi was announced.

Sounds like they are not in a hurry with the Switch which there is no reason to be. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they just keep building and just leave the upgrade to the successor.

The Switch's tech is outdated and that's why a pro model will be coming, is still the funniest take on this. The company specializes in taking cheap outdated hardware and spinning it into a profitable product. It has literally been a motto of theirs to use withered technology. Most everything they've put out was technically inferior to the competition sometimes right out of the gate. A revision is possible and probable, but I'd be surprised if it's anything more than superficial upgrades.

Obviously the rumor cycle has been very disappointing, but there is one reason I still think an upgraded Switch could come soon despite the fact that the current model is selling so well:

It was recently reported that 20% of Switch sales are now coming from households that already own one. Now, if you've been planning a mid-cycle refresh for the Switch, would it make sense to start selling it before that percentage gets too high, or to wait until a bunch of households own two or more Switches, thus cutting into sales of the newer/more expensive device that they might have bought instead. In other words, it may be easier to sell an upgraded Switch to people who just bought their first (or none) than to people who just bought their second. Families can justify a couple Switches, but larger numbers will certainly see diminishing returns. So Nintendo may want their upgrade to optimally come at a time when most households are looking for their second Switch.

Now my take could be way off base, and even if it isn't, doing what "makes sense" has never been Nintendo's thing. But it's just a thought I had as to why the "Switch is already selling like hotcakes" argument doesn't necessary put the rumors to bed for me.

If they stall long enough, the rumors of its expected greatness will exceed its actual capacities.

Nintendo is making their own version of that ten year long development cycle of Duke nukem. That turned out great.

When are people going to learn that Nintendo prepares non-answers specifically for these questions? They will announce a Switch Pro when THEY are ready, and it probably won't be in an interview, but rather they'll announce it on Twitter or whatever on their own terms.

I've got plenty of games to play and plenty of games to look forward to. Whenever the new Switch comes out, I'll be ready, but I'm satisfied regardless.

I’d rather Nintendo take their time developing software and hardware until they think the new model is really going to be a gamechanger, just as the Switch first came into the market—because that means the value we’re getting is truly worth exchanging our hard earned money for.

I don’t want to buy into another ecosystem that’s going to make me feel like the lifecycle of the device is as short as Apple’s, with only incremental updates at a time.

@Ludovsky I know there isn’t much disparity at all, but botw 2 can be made 100% for the switch. It can be slightly better, it doesn’t have to play down to the Wii U like the original did.

I'm sick to the back teeth of all this pointless speculation which started as soon as Switch was first released. Its a great console as it is and doesn't need an upgrade to 'enhance the gameplay experience'. Let's just enjoy it for what it is and be satisfied with all the great games that it has and which are coming out for Switch. Let's just learn to quit with the nonsense hype and speculation and just be content with what we already have.

Reading between the lines, it reads like they are working on a Switch Advance as a next generation console not an enhanced current Switch. The concept of a "pro" seems a bit alien to Nintendo now.

The longer the wait, the better the end product is likely to be (with more up-to-date processors, display etc. under the hood) and likely at a similar price point to the existing hardware.

I've known a Switch Pro wasn't coming for since they said it had a 7 inch screen. Screens are measured diagonally, which means switch controllers will not fit. Height scales with length. It also doesn't make sense with a gpu/cpu/silicon shortage.

I'm saying say the Switch "Pro" has now moved on from mirage to fantasy. Nintendo simply won't release a seriously enhanced version at a premium price for elite gamers to sell beside a base model. That is the definition of a "Pro" and is something Nintendo have never done and never will. As for the upgrade and replacement, there's a strong chance for that before the end of the year. The current model is due for an update, and if it is a substantial upgrade, Nintendo will probably want a significant installation base before BOTW2 and Metroid 4 eventually appear.

Nintendolife (and other news sites) should stop posting rumors about the Switch pro. There is only one valid source: Nintendo. And as long as they don't announce it, they have never hinted at a Switch pro, there is absolutely no truth about a Switch Pro.

Switch Pro and BotW2 both in 2022 is fine by me.

I really think we all need to appreciate that Covid has genuinely robbed us all of an entire year. Its not just Nintendo... all the film studios, the troubled PS5 and Series X launches... the long wait from rumours of existence to reveal and eventual release of Metroid 5.

People need to drop this "Switch Pro" nonsense. Every week there's someone or some website proposing an imminent reveal and they've all been wrong.

Stop treating rumours like an official announcement like some sort of alternative fact. It's not secret information if it's always wrong, and you're honestly foolish if you still believe it.

The Switch already has its alternate version, the Switch Lite. It's entirely possible there could be another version in the future but this current rumour needs to die.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: I'll believe it when I see it. Until Nintendo themselves comes out and says that the Switch Pro or any future hardware exists, I'll take any rumor or "leak" with a grain of salt.

I've said this for awhile, but I really hope that they don't just upgrade the tablet. The upgrade should really happen to the dock that people could buy separately. The Switch connects to the dock via USB-C, so, in theory, the dock could become an external GPU. That would be a day one purchase for me if Nintendo do this. I think the New Switch would be such a marginal update alone that it really wouldn't be worth the new price tag.

2 things for me. If they haven't fixed the joy-con drift issue, it's a no buy for me. Also, if they are manufactured in China, after the last year has shown the world, I'm gonna have to think long and hard if I want to support this with my wallet. I am trying my best to boycott anything made in that country. The CCP is NOT the western world's friend.

Eh, Nintendo has a history of releasing multiple hardware revisions for their handhelds, and even the Switch itself has already had a couple of revisions (the Lite and the new CPU that came out in 2018) so another revision coming out sometime between now and the end of the Switch's lifecycle (which will probably continue through 2024) isn't really outlandish. It's extremely likely.

Sure, it's tiring how everyone is constantly speculating about it and it'd be nice of journalists/youtubers/and fans stopped talking about it all the time, but let's also not be naive here about what Bowser is saying. He's not deconfirming anything. It's simply a "we're not ready to announce anything at this time" statement.

And if all these "pro switch" articles and videos really bother some of you that much, then just stop clicking on them. There's a reason people keep writing about it: it's the traffic you helped generate when you came here.

Mr Bowser is rather repetitive. How many different reincarnations of the ds/3ds did we have without it being referred to as a new console, it was an upgrade or new variation. As is the Switch Lite.

Is Nintendo sticking with the Switch concept or are they eventually going to be dumping it for something new as they usually do with each new Nintendo console? If so we can expect the Switch to remain as it is for a few more years.

BUT we are talking about another Switch variant NOT a new console. Nintendo is attracting lots of new sales with the Lite. It's a cheap way for kids, families, PS and Xbox owners to play Animal Crossing and Mario games. But at the other end of the gaming spectrum as well as Mario and other Nintendo games, gamers want open world and third party games that run much better than they do now on the present Switch.

Its these gamers that either have other consoles or maybe considering getting one, like myself. This will eventually eat into Nintendo sales. With two consoles my game spending will be split because I won't necessarily play more games, just have a wider choice.

Like many, I change my smartphone every year for the latest version. It is out in October, and I all ready know what it looks like and what spec it has. Nintendo should be a bit more user friendly.

i don't think many of the people hoping for a hardware revision are expecting some kind of ps5 level jump or the like, and instead hoping that one would mean less examples of games dipping below 30fps or other performance issues.

The switch concept being popular (an understatement) is also why i imagine you see more mention of an updated switch than a potential follow-up, which may not use the same concept.

Switch Pro, Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Santa Claus etc…..all figments of the imagination.

Also most if not everything came from China nowadays even that shirt and underwear you're wearing. May as well make your own stuff then if you're limiting yourself from all things made from China.

I'll be surprised if the "Switch Pro" comes with an Orin based SoC, because ...
1) It's very new technology (entering production next year), possibly too new for Nintendo
2) While 15W is a match for docked mode, it's too high for handheld mode (need to get down to 10W for that)
3) Samsung 8nm node is already utilised for Nvidia's 3000 series GPUs for the PC market.

I still think Xavier is more likely at the moment as it's more established technology (entering production 2019), with 15W and 10W models available from last year. Those models could be the basis of prototypes and early (heavily NDA'd) dev kits that are supposedly already out there. Finally Xavier is produced in fabs on 12nm node, which at the moment is kinda in the sweet spot between the high demand higher nodes, and the shortage struck lower nodes.

I'd be looking at Orin, or Atlan, to be used in a Switch 2.

Now you might be justified in thinking that it doesn't really matter when the next Nintendo console comes or when Nintendo announces it. It comes when it comes and we'll know when Nintendo wants to tell us. No need to spend energy speculating about it, right?

It may be... except if you're someone who doesn't own a Switch and you're thinking carefully about how to spend your hard-earned cash, and you're trying to figure out whether to shell out the dough for the current Switch, or wait just a few more months for the upgraded/next-gen iteration.

It's always the same story: Nintendo reveals the next iteration late and people who just bought the old version are gonna be pissed. Same happened with the New 3DS. And that is why Nintendo won't confirm it until they're closer to the launch, because they don't want for the current Switch sales to slow too much.

Yes, Nintendo is always looking at new technology. The problem is that they're always looking at technology that is 10 years out of date.

The only reason people were expecting a Switch Pro in the first place, was all the loonies online and YouTube putting stupid unrealistic ideas in their heads, pretty much the same as before the original Switch was revealed.

The console is due for a mid generation upgrade around now, hardly a tough thing to predict.

@DDStuff I honestly hope we have to wait until 2023. It's not that far off, we'll see 5nm chips as the standard, more mature dlss-type of tech, storage and speed improvements...all things we'll really need to have an upgraded Switch be worth it imo.

I was honestly relieved when they didn't reveal one at E3. I'm not ready to spend ~$500 on a new system, especially after getting a $2000 gaming laptop last year. I hope they don't ever release a Switch Pro, and instead just do a Switch 2 in a few years. That would be good.

More or less means they have a new model as to release date that is based on upcoming higher Resolution games. Read all we want but you don't wait this long while xbox/psx already have their xbox5/ps5 units out there already without anything to respond to it. It be dumb to wait just because current is selling-it's selling because it's only one model Duh. And the fact if new does comes it sounds like backward compatiblity to play old games while having option to upscale current games. Just like PS5 talks about older game upscaling WHY is it when that is mention for Switch that we get NintenDoomed calling this blasphemy that Switch can't do this. This is the part I find comical and amusing they like to talk outside of both orifices'.

I suspect Switch Pro is actually the Switch successor at this point. They will put it off till they are ready and likely wait for the chip shortage to stop.

I still predict an announcement by end of summer and a release at holiday season. That said, I’m extremely unlikely to buy whatever they’re selling. I’m not one for the latest and greatest (my console before Switch was a gifted Wii), and I don’t get a lot of time to play video games. That means I’ll get to enjoy the Switch’s already-fantastic and growing library for a long time to come.

@skywake And that was just my point: it's standard business speak, nothing to glean any supposed proof from that a new Switch is coming. And extending a life cycle can simply mean extending the life cycle of the current models. Doesn't necessarily mean that there's going to be an upgrade, and it's also not necessary, for now.

And the statement about "new platform" can also not be misconstrued, in my opinion. New platform = new generation of consoles, not an upgrade of current ones. But hey, it's just my personal view on the matter. No one has to agree with it.

Why release a Pro this year when they almost certainly could just wait until the next Holiday season and make a Switch 2? The system has already been out for over 4 years and will be pushing 6 next November. I don’t think it’s that hard to believe that we’ll just see a new system that can almost keep up with the current Gen instead of a upgraded system that doesn’t logically make sense to release when their two current models are still the top sellers

As much as I admire Nintendo for putting games first, this year's E3 Nintendo direct made me feel most offerings felt dated, visually. They need new hardware.

I think if Nintendo has a new Switch to announce, they're going to wait until their Annual Share Holder's meeting at the end of the month. If not then, then I'll say they don't have anything until maybe 2022.

That isn’t part of the speculation wishlist. 4k, Oled screen, ps4 or better graphics are the wish words that get tossed around. And again, that wouldn’t change the software lineup much. And I assume that gamers buy gaming systems to play games not to brag about what is under the hood. So I stand by my original comment in its entirety.

@Slowdive I am happy that the switch is as durable as it is. Yes joycon drift and fan crazy behavior hits most of us but 4 years for a portable that doesn't clamshell protect itself is pretty good run.
I hope all the newer cell phone tech can go into the next one. My Vivo x60 pro+ is a total wonder of tech but was $1000. Sure the cameras can be taken out so I guess a Black Shark 4 around $500 is something to compare. They could take the guts from that and maybe the next switch will be $350?

They didn't need Switch for BotW, the game was ready for Wii U and Nintendo delayed the game one year to come along with Switch. It was a successful move and it wouldn't surprise me if BotW2 releases on Switch and its successor at the same time. The only good game that Switch had at launch was the Wii U port.

Lighter, better battery, Joycon revision to address drift, reduced bezels, slightly better performance for improved quality of life features like locked 720p handheld, DLSS for upscaled docked mode, etc.

Just QoL features like the above would be amazing. Just call it the Switch Large and call it a day.

it does feel like a lot of the rumors are mixing with each other.

while ideally games would be optimized for the switch it often isn't the case sadly, whether it be a smaller company inexperienced with switch development or a lack of time, or sometimes the switch port is just not a priority.

in terms of game library i wasnt expecting it being a case of more games coming but rather that the games themselves would perform better.
For the most part speculation was closer to a 3ds>new 3ds situation or ps4>ps4 pro (hence the whole "switch pro" name for said rumor)
naturally due to how long the rumors have been going on for and the amount of different ones there is a lot of mix up in what people are actually expecting (the rumor which suggested 4k and oled for example didnt suggest an upgrade to performance)

again im not buying into these rumors since theres so many of them , i still hope that a "new switch" happens but at this point its just a case of wait and see.

My only hope for a second generation Switch or Switch successor is that it optimizes past games to the point of maintaining desirable performance. So many of the Switch's flagship titles struggle to maintain consistent frame rates coupled with wildly fluctuating (or dynamic) resolutions.

Of course, there are also the issues with current Switch hardware, specifically the dreaded drift. Nintendo products used to be known for their quality and polish; hardware built to survive a carpet bombing and games optimized enough to make the PC master race seethe.

While the Switch generation has been very successful for Nintendo, these are traits I'd like to see brought back with a New Switch or whatever. Also Virtual Console. (I can dream.)

@rjejr Haha, I've also done that, several times, both with controllers and games. Once I know that I will eventually get that console or handheld, and I come across games or peripherals on sale or only available for a limited time, then I might still buy them, even if I don't have the actual hardware to use them with yet.

The first game I ever got for my Wii U was ZombiU: it was SO heavily discounted that I feared it might not be available at all anymore by the time I would finally be able to buy the console, so that game has been sitting on a shelf in my apartment for roughly half a year...

So framerate is honestly most likely simply going to be: Pretty much the same than BOTW1, both smooth and less smooth moments".

Even the sky stuff where you can see the surface from above will likely be handled okay because that's something even BOTW1 did: Vah Medo where you can see the surface from above when on the Divine Beast that's itself soaring above the cloud. And similarly I assume that the "surface" will be used as only a background rather than a place to "go" to when you'll be in the sky.

Thus rather than have to worry about smooth transition and performance when traveling from the sky to the surface I assume travel between the sky and the surface will be done via fixed portals(at least for surface to sky... I have my thoughts about one way they could handle sky to surface but they don't change the current point), kinda how dimension travel was handled in Zelda A Link to the Past when traveling from the world of light to the dark world.

Meaning both worlds are actually likely loaded(and thus active) separately rather than at the same time.

@Ghost_of_Hasashi it's actually not that hard to find "most" things that aren't made in China if you actually look for it. I've been avoiding anything from there for some time now. It's primarily electronics that might be difficult. But I'm willing to do it. I've had enough of the CCP.

@Ludovsky I see your point, but we need smoother gameplay and the current switch really does have a bottleneck when it comes to the CPU and RAM, that's why it has such ridiculous load times. Also they need to double or triple the amount of RAM in the switch or it will be left out of many of the newer gen games that are coming.

@Fulkaffe yes please! I've been playing the new Hyrule warriors age of calamity, or whatever it's called and the stuttering frame rate is severely annoying, it's passable but only barely... I certainly hope when they do release a newer switch that it does have a Sony like boost mode, surely it would reduce the load times and also make some of the older games that use dynamic resolution with unlocked frame rate work a lot better.

@westmeadow Honestly, bar a very vocal minority, I feel the majority of the Switch fanbase is exactly as you are. They're fine with the Switch-as-is.

Like even the 2019 revision didn't change anything for performances beyond battery life and, not only that, was only made because the original chip from the 2017 original Switch would no longer be made by nVidia.

And with another whopping 20 millions consoles sold iirc this last year, 4 year into the Switch and starting a fifth... if performance of the Switch had REALLY been an issue there wouldn't have been so many sales again and everyone would have just waited for the "next" Switch.

As it is, I don't see Nintendo wanting to release a pro Switch that would be the only way to "truly" enjoy future games(be them "Pro Exclusives" or just to "get good performances at all because devs/publishers didn't bother to optimize or even try developping for base Switch") for 80millions+ people who already own the original Switch(with 15-20 millions in the last year alone iirc).

Sales aren't slowing, so there's no real reason to release a "pro" console especially one that could be used to "replace" the regular Switch unlike the Switch lite which was for people who were either uninterested in the regular Switch or buying a Lite in addition to a regular that served as the "family/local multiplayer" console.

@ThanosReXXX I have an entire shelf full of PS2 games b/c I traded my PS2 in for the Slim model but forgot to buy the Slim model, and I keep waiting for backwards compatibility to include PS2 discs. Maybe the New Switch Pro will play PS2 discs?

I had a $50 reward at Best Buy from buying my tv that expired a few weeks ago and I didn't know what to do w/ it so a $75 controller was the last resort. I may buy a 8bitdo dongle for Switch if one goes on sale. Otherwise it's Gamepass on PC until a PS5 presents itself. Maybe Santa can work some Christmas magic this year? 🎅

@rjejr Well, I didn't have the patience, or the time, to wait for Saint Nick, and seeing as my old Panasonic Plasma screen was about to go on a trip to the eternal hunting grounds, I decided to get a new TV.

I used my holiday bonus, seeing as I wasn't going anywhere anyways, thanks to COVID restrictions, so I was able to get me a good quality screen. I went for the LG OLED55CX6LA and I'm super happy with it. It came out on top in several reviews, so ultimately, I decided to go for it. I was also tempted to get a Samsung screen, because it was slightly cheaper, but I did want to get a superior screen, also for gaming and sports, so that's why I ended up with this one.

The web page from the shop where I got it from, has plenty of info on it in English, in case your interest has been piqued, or if you're still looking for a new TV as well.

Either way, from my own experience with it over this last week, I can heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a new TV. Even old consoles look great on it. Got the old Wii plugged in as well...

@ThanosReXXX Very nice. 👍 OLED was out of my price range for the size I was looking for. I'm an old white 'Murican guy, so size matters. Got the best 75" for under $1k - by a penny - I could find. The HDR isn't very bright, but is it big. There's a "that's what she said" joke in there somewhere. 😂

At this point I no longer believe in pro. We're far enough into the lifecycle that if it didn't release in the next 6 months, they might as week wait a couple years and release a whole new console. Just make it fully backwards compatible and access to cloud saves.

No. There will not be a switch pro. They would be morons to release such a thing & divide the user base again. The new Switch will be a new switch. It may have BC, but it will not have games that can be played on current switch models, unless they do like MS claimed they'd do & release all games on both systems for a short time.

There is no delay as Nintendo is ordering OLED screens right now. They aren't ordering hardware components for a product that's not launching until next year or later.

There have been Switch Pro rumors since BEFORE the launch of the actual Switch itself. It's never happened and it will never happen. The Switch Pro DOES NOT EXIST.

Someday there will be a Switch 2, or they will name it completely different. That will have improved hardware. But that's not the Switch pro. And it won't happen for another 3-4 years.

Some of us would welcome a upgraded Switch with more 4K options as that most likely will be backward compatible with previous game and make them upscale DLSS lookin better. If xbox/ps5 can do it why not a Switch. And there nothing proven will split the Switch user base other then NintenDoomed fandom saying so. I doubt all these years since release they didn't make a update or upgraded Switch aka Switch better power saver/Lite models. As much as Nintendo loves creating entertainment they still have stakeholders to answer to and bills to pay.
Both Microsoft and Sony are feeling alot of pain right now by releasing new systems in this current climate.

Nintendo is a small company who make games and a couple of consoles to play the games on. They are not electronic or computer giants like Sony and Microsoft. From being up high one minute with the Wii they can be right down the next with the Wii U (when there were talks of them being taken over).

Nintendo spends to much time on innovation and not enough on their core product, games. If their next console is only as successful as the Wii u, they may not stop a takeover.

It's far better to expand the product range by introducing another Switch variant now, a more powerful one that lots of gamers want, rather than thinking the cheap Lite will keep shareholders happy. Lite gamers do not spend the big bucks.

Look what happened to the Nintendo shares after E3. The Direct did not please the shareholders this time.

This sounds like no Pro. I think we may get a subtle update like the 3DS had, but his wording seems to suggest they're waiting for Switch 2 for any meaningful jump in tech.

I'm sure they have been tooling around the idea. There might even be working concept models in their offices. Interviews about past consoles usually say something to the effect of "they were working on it shortly after the last model launched, etc."

Thought 1; there's a line between the current console doing fine and time to think new model. And Switch is doing better than fine right now.

Thought 2; at this point they probably have the tech for a full successor vs a pro model. Both Sony and MS tried pushing pro models and still moved on. In Xbox's case it just confused the landscape. That's not to say the next thing couldn't be backwards compatible (preferably natively and not "I can boot up a virtual environment").

Keep in mind that more complex and proprietary hardware also comes with higher development and build costs so yes they could potentially be making more money when they sell each unit but what's more important than that is the profit from each unit and profits from each game sold.
Microsoft and Sony have powerful systems but they're both selling them at a loss. if the Nintendo switch pro is $399 but cost Nintendo $350 to make or worse $400 versus a Nintendo switch that they sell for $299 and probably cost them about $120 or $150 now that they are in mass production again it's hard to convince your investors to jump on something that isn't going to show as many returns on profits. Nintendo has it's own user base and ecosystem which does not have to complete with either Microsoft or Sony. Try not to look at them as competitors. Yes they are all the business of making video game entertainment systems but they appeal to different sections of the gaming community with some spillover here and there.
If you want the type of games that Microsoft and Sony offer you are free to invest in their systems and game titles.
Having a very powerful portable system comes with trade-offs that you may not want to live with such as noticably shorter battery life, heat and weight. You can't get double the power for free without affecting things that could make portability problematic. Even if they use RTX technology to do DLSS upscaling it still needs power to do that which will generate heat that a small device will have trouble dissipating without a complex and expensive cooling system.
Sorry for droning on, I am not trying to be a naysayer, I am just trying to be realistic about the various factors that are going against a more powerful portable being released right now.

Nintendo may not see themselves as a direct competitor, but they rely on third party games to fill the ever expanding gap between the release of their own games. And many of the big third party games have to be compromised so much to run on the Switch, which was not designed for those games.

Yes you are right, to get the best out of gaming, buy another console as well as the Switch, I have thought about this, I won't play any more games but I will have a better choice of what to buy. That will leave the Switch as mainly a handheld device, replacing the DS, and the PS will become the main home console.

If a new third party game were released on all three consoles at the same time I would buy the PS version for the better graphics etc rather than being able to play it on the go, since I don't play games away from home.

As for console price, plenty of Nintendo gamers would pay more for a more powerful Switch, just as Xbox and PlayStation owners may have a Switch Lite.

If Nintendo don't release a more powerful Switch, it's not because they can't it's because they are complacent enough not to.

@westman98 They've been ordering those parts for a long time. I can only assume they intended to start shipping units to distributors by now and got caught up in the wafer shortages and production slowdowns to do anything with the parts bins yet. Furukawa was bullish on the hardware sales predictions but then added that "it could be less if we can't meet production" disclaimer. I'm not sure they actually know what's releasing when at this point due to the planned schedule being fubar. There haven't even been FCC documents yet implying it still isn't in fab yet.

They have to be wondering what exactly the refresh is going to do to their extended plans at this point. It's clearly a later release than intended. Along with the comments about switch changing the traditional console cycle, etc, if it hasn't gone to fab yet, they may be changing the design to support launching later yet and then prolonging the gen to the extreme. Or just half baking it, slap a new screen on the same hardware and move on fast. Year 5 and we don't have the refresh yet on a platform showing its age while they talk about a longer cycle. The tea table was certainly upended.

Waiting until the holiday cycle again to announce it is a total cluster though. PS5/XSX would have been far less a disaster if it weren't coupled to the holiday cycle. Nintendo will probably make those problems look trivial.

I've been patiently hanging tight waiting for the announcement, but at this point the new switch money may just go into a shiny new pellet grill instead.

@WiltonRoots I'll see your 7 pounds and I'll lower it to 6 euros, because that's what I paid for it, back then. I even bought two copies, gave one to a friend who already had a Wii U. Enjoyable game indeed, and to this day, still the superior version of the game.

The Wii U GamePad just added SO much more fun and suspense to it, which the other versions just weren't able to replicate in any kind of sufficient manner.

Personally, though, I'd stick with brands that I know, and TCL is not a brand that is familiar to me, and far as I know, it isn't even available, unless some store has an import option...

Remember the New 3DS vs. the original 3DS? It was far from a generational leap in GPU and only doubled the same RAM and CPU of the old 3DS, yet it did things that neither Xbox One X or PS4 Pro did much in comparison to their original models, such as:

• Exclusive games (just a few, but that's another topic)
• A C-Stick which allowed for free camera on games like Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate without the need for that troublesome Circle Pad Pro
• Shoulder buttons (though they were even more underutilised than its specs...)
• Amiibo compatibility without the need of a peripheral
• Improved 3D viewing (the 3DS's main feature) on the sides
• Better specs which meant better loading times and performance, including game downloads
• New features not possible on old 3DS on some games, such as triple speed for battle skipping on Codename: S.T.E.A.M.
• An outside feature and only on the standard New 3DS, flexible customization with faceplates!

As you can see, Nintendo packed a lot of punch on bringing new features to the 3DS with that revision. Sadly it became an underused model as time passed, with it only recieving fewer than what it should've. With this hypothesis in mind; would anybody like the idea of, say, an extra dungeon/landscape on BoTW2 which utilized Switch Pro's new power and features? Or anything else that demands more RAM? Switch Whatever-will-be-called has the chance of being the most drastic hardware update, and with what he's saying they want to redefine a console generation with Switch, I tend think more about something that would definitely be really polarizing. I will speak about when the time comes, maybe when they talk more about the Switches' life cycle plans.

@ThanosReXXX I've always been a Goldilocks shopper. Get 3 prices - the top 1 is likely overpriced, possibly paying for a name, the lowest price is probably garbage, so go w/ the one in the middle. TCL has no name, which is good, and 3 ranges, 400, 500, 800. At 75" most tvs really break out to either garbage or too expensive, there really were only 1 or 2 other choices at that size and price and those TV had better scores than either.

I'm always working within a budget and looking at what's most important, and for me it wasn't a top score, it was size. At my eye I doubt I could even see a difference between a 7 and a 10, like I can't really tell 30fps from 60fpz or 1080 from 4k.

But the thing that was most important to my wife was turning off the "soap opera" effect. That she can see. It took me 3 years of wearing her down to let me buy a 4k tv b/c most people do not turn it off, and she hates it. This TV not only let's you turn it off, it has low, medium and hi settings. I can't tell the difference between them all but she tells me right away if it isn't set to off. I can't always see out but she hasn't been wrong yet. Happy wife, happy life. 😉

On a side note: what I did notice, and kind of miss is that with pre-recorded series, such as all the NCIS series that I watch, it now looks like everything is happening live: it's SO sharp in 4K, that you more or less lose that cinematic effect, if you understand what I'm getting at.

It's not exactly the same as the soap opera effect, obviously, but on all TV's that are either full HD or lower, there's probably also a lower Hz mode (I believe that the one I have is 120Hz), which probably explains this difference. But other than that, I'm very, VERY happy with my new TV. And in time, I'll get more used to it, and I'll learn to overcome/ignore these tiny niggles. Well, probably...

@ThanosReXXX Are there native 4k versions for NCIS or is it a 1080p show on your TV? Are you watching it on a streaming service or disc? Maybe it's the streaming service? That "sharpness" you describe does sound like the soap opera effect. I think your tv being 120hz rather than 60 might be even doubling the sharpness according to rtings.

Here's the settings to mess around w/ if you haven't already. We tried the BFI black frame insertion but my wife was bothered by that as well, so we always watch on "cinema" and turn off everything else. In your case turn "Trumotion" off, or maybe Cinema Clear, and turn Picture to Real Cinema. I dont' knwo why you need both "Real Cinema" and "Cinema Clear" everything is so complicated these days. I change all of those settings for almost everything we do on the tv - gaming, movies, TV. 😝 Have fun and good luck. No reason to watch a show a way you don't like and try to get used to it w/ that many settings at your disposable. Not 1 but 2 sliders for Trumotion User setting. I say go for it.

@rjejr No, the broadcast is streamed through my set top box in 1080p, and the TV upscales/cleans it. I'll look into those settings, might be just what I'm looking for.

And as mentioned, it doesn't quite look like the soap opera effect. I actually recorded an episode of the Bold to make a comparison, and even that soap opera looks less live than NCIS, even in 4K...

Most of these things are probably easy to fix, once you know where to look in the settings, but the thing that I find most annoying is that it's all ON by default: all kinds of settings that I either don't want or need.

Another one I'm currently fighting with, is the so-called "Ultra HD Deep Colour" setting, which more or less gets activated automatically if a device connected to HDMI port 1, 2 or 4 is switched on and supports the setting. The thing is, though, that I have 5 consoles connected to one port (HDMI4, the fastest game port, for lowest input lag) by means of a mains-powered HDMI hub, that I bought especially for this TV and this purpose, because it didn't play nice with my non-powered, cheap Amazon HDMI switches.

Now, normally, the setting for switching that option on or off should be retained, once selected, if I understood correctly, but strangely enough, when I switch from one Xbox console to another (Xbox 360 and Xbox One), the setting is activated again automatically, and even more weird is that this supposedly modern feature IS supported by my Xbox 360, but if it's switched on, the signal of my Xbox One S isn't coming through, and I get a "no signal detected/switch on or connect a device" message instead, until I once again switch "Ultra HD Deep Colour" off in my TV settings, and then I can display both Xbox'es again, even if I switch from one to the other.

But, once every console is switched off, and the hub is switched off, I get the same damn thing AGAIN, the next time I switch either of the consoles on again, so apparently, the TV doesn't retain the setting. I don't know (yet) if that's due to the HDMI hub, or because of some other reason.

I suppose I'll ultimately find a fix, or if not, it'll ultimately will have to become another thing that I'll need to learn to live with it.

But all in all, these are relatively tiny niggles, and it's more that my annoyance grows exponentially because of me not being able to find the solution, so the mole hill becomes a mountain, at some point, while it actually is still just the tiniest of mole hills...

I'm still very happy with it, though. And Wii through component and then lossless pass through to an HDMI converter is something that you'd need to see live to believe how good that can look on such a big screen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the home menu is made in a lower than 480i/480p resolution. It's SO fuzzy that it almost makes me think that I'm looking at a 240p YouTube video.

And that makes the difference all the more dramatic, once you switch from home menu to an actual game. Either way, it certainly was a concern, before I bought it. I was confident enough that all the HD consoles would look perfectly fine, but I've often heard bad things from other people about older, non-HD consoles on newer screens, so I'm glad that my worries in that regard have now been firmly laid to rest.

@rjejr Well, you'd be correct, but not because of the lack of airconditioning, but because it's a sea climate over here, so it's a humid, sticky heat, and that is the worst thing about it.

I'm perfectly fine with anything up to 45 degrees Celsius. I've been to countries where these kinds of temperatures are the order of the day, but because it's dry heat, it's FAR more bearable, because you don't drift away inside your own clothes...

Here's the thing, and my problem, I used to be, or at least considered myself to be, fairly intelligent, but now I keep forgetting to take off my watch before I get into the shower. And when watching tv episodes of a show week to week - take Loki since it's the only 1 we're watching - I always have to ask people to explain the previous episode to me bc/ I usually can't recall it all, just bits and pieces. And I used to have a truly great memory. Now it's like 50% give or take. So I don't think I'm getting stupid, nto compared to the rest of twitter anyway, but not being able to remember stuff day to day or week to week it making me feel stupid. I'll see a Dr. about it eventually just not sure what they can do, I'm getting old.

Good news for you, I recall mostly everything from more than 5 years ago, only new stuff has no lasting memory, so you're good as a person, just can't keep track of any conversations we may be having if there's a pause for more than a few days.

@rjejr Ah, sorry to hear about that. Hope it doesn't get worse any time soon, or at all, for that matter. I've already experienced that first hand, with my mother, so I don't have any particularly fond memories of it either.

On a side note: perhaps it'll make you feel a little bit better to know that at 51, I also sometimes forget stuff, so in that regard, it isn't all that peculiar or specific. I sometimes stroll from my living room to my kitchen, which is a 10 seconds walk, and once I reach the fridge, I actually forgot what it was that I had to check. I never forget getting something to drink when I go to the fridge, but if I have to do a day to day inventory, to see what I need to go and buy the next day, I regularly forget.

Same thing happens in the supermarket: I come home to find out that once AGAIN, I forgot something. But I'll be damned if I take some stupid written note with me, to use as a check list to help me remind what to get, like some retirement home gramps...

Long as I can, I'll keep jogging my memory, and you know what? Games actually also help. The interactivity of it triggers the brain, improves hand-eye coordination and lessens other mental effects of aging as well. It has also been proven that physical exercise or sports also improves mental health and will halt even the effects of Alzheimer's.

So, if you're still doing your Asian exercises in the library (or wherever that was back then), keep doing them, and if you're not, go and pick it up again. Even if you feel too tired to do so, you should know from your own experience that it actually also gives you energy.

Nintendo was also talking about the N3DS so the new N3DS was announced despite what Nintendo said the new N3DS doesn’t exist at all and so it will be with the NS which is sure to get a revision probably in 2022.
