The fourth SteamWorld game is nearly here, with SteamWorld Dig 2 out this week (21st September) on the Switch eShop. After going off into space with the excellent turn-based strategy of SteamWorld Heist, this one brings us back to the digging and exploration first seen in SteamWorld Dig, a title that achieved notable success on the 3DS before moving onto other platforms.
A new launch trailer for the game has now been released, which gives a nice idea of what you can expect in this sequel - check it out below.
Our review will be with you before the game's release, so we'll let you know what we think, such as ...[EMBARGOED].
Is Image & Form's latest release on your wishlist?

Very nice! I never finished the first but this might motivate me to completing it before digging into the second one.
Personally, I didn't find the first game deep enough but this second game looks to have content in spades.
Anything Image & Form makes is a day 1 purchase for me.
Aaaaah the sound effects, so cool
Ooooh the presentation, when you sell the ore, so nice
And the music...
This looks so good.
It looks lovely but when is it launching on Wii U?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Probably when the WiiU becomes relevant
Looks good!
Will watch the video when I get home but I already know that this is a Day 1 buy for me. The first game was fantastic and something that I hadn't experienced before. This should build on it and give a more fleshed out game.
Hopefully Image & Form consider putting Dig 1 and Heist on the Switch. Even selling them as a twin pack for £20 if they don't want to sell them individually. Please, please, please.
While I love Dig 1, I'll likely wait for a sale. Saving money right now.
I've been a fan since this game was announced. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. I want a physical release of this game, which hasn't even been announced yet. Will I be able to hold out, or will I download it day 1? I don't know yet, but can't wait to play this game.
Anyone remember when Nintendo machines had naff support and you had money to spend?
No Pun for the subheadline? You could've typed in Get a Good Dig In... and it'd be perfect XD
I never finished the first one, but I want to. Maybe after my current Metroid bender I'll give it another go.
Getting it as soon as it hits eShop.
After having played the first, this is what I have to say:
Bring it.
The fourth? There's Dig, Heist, and Dig 2? What's the fourth?
@link3710 SteamWorld Tower Defense. It was the first title, and appeared on DSiWare.
This will definitely scratch the Metroid itch until Ori returns.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm waiting for @Anti-matter to reply to you
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Maybe not on Wii U anymore.
So, grab Switch version instead.
@MariOnline
Yo, what's up ?
I had say something to sligeach eire.
@panurgeJr Thanks! I never had a DSi, so it's library largely went by unnoticed for me.
gotta love the Nintendo website, releases in 2 days, rating is still pending and number of players is still to be determined.

And no mention of the price on the Nindies page. 2 days.
http://www.nintendo.com/games/nintendo-switch-nindies-hits
Even though I&F gave us the price 3 weeks ago.

I enjoyed the first game, but I'm selective about my money. I don't think everything needs to be free or 99c, but I'm not sold on $19.99, or the double jump from $9.99 to $19.99 a few years later. Game looks better, but it's the second game it should look better. Most games work that way at the same price.
More power to them though, it will sell initially at that price, then they can put it on sale for $14.99 in a few months and $9.99 a few months later, keep the game getting noticed on the crowded Switch eShop.
@Kalmaro I did finished the first game, and you are totally right, it had no deep. But I am willilng to play the sequel, it looks amazing.
So excited!! 😀 Now we can start asking about Heist 2!! 😀
@Mykcir Yeah, it's a shame too because it was kinda fun! Just got dull quickly.
Day 1!!!!
This game releasing soon was my motivation behind finally purchasing a Switch... and the fact that Switches may be impossible to find again after Mario releases and then holiday shopping season starts. I walked into a GameStop and purchased my Switch on Sunday.
The price is a little higher than expected, but considering Image & Form essentially gave me Dig 1 on 3DS & WiiU with the Nindie Bundle and how much I enjoyed that game and Heist... I will happily purchase Dig 2 upon release... I look at it as $15 for the game and a $5 tip to I&F for being generous the first time around and continuing to support Nintendo platforms with top-notch games.
@rjejr
Just look at it as $10 for the home version and $10 for the portable version!
This game looks amazing. Think it's a day 1 buy for me if I have the funds. I loved SteamWorld Heist.
On a more off-topic note I walked past my local game and saw the Switch being solf for £50 above the RRP. With prices like that they're almost as bad as ebay scalpers.
A third party developer would sell this for $60, maybe depending on how big/long the game is. $20 is fine with me!
That hookshot is soooo HAWT
I don't have a Switch yet, but if they happen to release it on 3DS (or maybe even Vita) I'll get it for sure!
Got both Steamworld Dig and Heist on both the Wii U and 3DS, so getting this on the Switch makes my life that much easier Worth all the money they want!
Can't wait for this game. The first one was SOOOOOOO awesome!
@rjejr I'm pretty sure the previous game, Heist, was 25.
@Kalmaro @SLIGEACH_EIRE which, of course means.... never🤔
@Findonovan95 wow... there's a target own the street from me. They have 4 just sitting there. Makes one want to buy and resale😈 Maybe tack in a "goin' outta my way" fee😲
Their last 2 games were 2 of the best things on 3DS eshop so I'll def get this. Don't have Switch yet though so I'll get the Vita version.
@holygeez03 "$10 for the home version and $10 for the portable "
Funny, I am looking at it that way. And when I can buy the home version for $10 I will, I'll never play the Switch undocked, I'm a couch potato. That's what Ntinedo did w/ Mario vs DK Tipping Stars - buy the Wii U or 3DS version for $19.99, get the other version for free. So I never bought it. Even now they still sell it for $19.99, even though they tell you it's an incomplete game once Miiverse goes away.

@Indielink According to the I&F website Heist was $14.99 on consoles of all sizes and $9.99 on mobile. But what do they know?
http://imageform.se/game/steamworld-heist/
There is a $5 DLC pack and a soundtrack, so maybe all together it was 25 and that's where you are getting that price from? Or its Canadian, always getting the short end of the currency conversion up there.
@GrailUK I've stayed broke but now I feel like I have to work a part time job just for gaming.
@Ryu_Niiyama I know right. Need to think of a list of possible second jobs that don't detract from gaming time too much. Hmmm...night security?
@GrailUK That is my second job actually. Works well with gaming.
I can pay 30$CAN for a Steamworld game made by Image & form. Dig and Heist was a pure art for me. Day one for me. The minute it will come To eshop it will be mine.
@rjejr
You never play your Switch (on the couch) undocked while someone else in your household uses the main TV? Or while you have something else on TV?
Being able to play games like MK8 while also monitoring a sporting event is my favorite thing about the WiiU and I will continue doing that a lot with my Switch... bringing it on vacation is just a bonus... I will also occasionally dock it for games like Mario Odyssey and couch co-op games.
At one point this summer, I had the Tour de France on the main TV, two different Wimbledon matches on my smaller TV's (yes I have 3 TV's in my living room), SGDQ on my laptop, and I was playing MK8 on my WiiU GamePad... it was a good morning.
It looks SO good! These guys are genius.
But it's not coming to the 3DS right...? So far I don't own the Switch.
@Kalmaro I'm in tears that response though haha.
Yay loved the first Dig! (and Heist!)
@Ryu_Niiyama HA!
"I whooped and hollered like a demented seal." Sounds like all of Kotaku.
So Psyched
@holygeez03 Don't have a Switch yet, just $50 on my Gamestop credit card for the Mario - Switch bundle pre-order, but since I know it's the same size as the Gamepad screen no way I'll be playing on it. Heck I even hate the Joycon from the few times I've held them in my hands. Dock and Pro for me. Unless Ntineod makes it so we HAVE to use the Joycon for Mario by not putting in a button press for the cap circle move. 4 years fo Wii U ownership, nevr played only on the GMaepad. Did get use during LEgo City U and XCX, W101 and a few others, not Zelda sadly, but I've never used it as the main screen. Being the dad in the house means I get the tv, everybody else gets to do something else. Kids play on the Gamepad A LOT, so I'm not knocking it, it's just not for me. Kids will play in the car - I won't play while driving - and in the hotel while I take over the TV. So great for them non-stop, but it's strictly a home console for me.
@rjejr Hmmm I feel like that's what I remember paying for it, 20 or 25, but my brainspace isn't the best. It was US dollars though.
As for the price comparison to Dig, it's a much bigger game than Dig was and it's far more detailed and elaborate. Gotta remember that the first started as a 3DS game and was uprezzed to more powerful consoles rather than being built natively.
I heard the underground isn't randomly generated like it is in the first game. That really hurts replayability in my opinion, the game still looks like a fun and wild ride though.
hell yes! i played the first over and over on wiiu and 3ds. will buy a retail copy if i can but download will be fine for the time being. steamworld dig was one of the best games on 3ds and this is a vast improvement to the formula
Need to wrap up Splatoon 2 single player and Mario+Rabbids. I've only played Heist, but this looks good!
I will buy this for the Switch instead of PC, just for the HD rumble.
I loved the first game and want to buy this day one, but my funds are low due to medical bills and my sister's upcoming wedding, which will cost an arm and a leg to attend. Oh well, I'll get this and the other Indie games I've skipped out on when there is a humble bundle for Switch indies.
Awesome! Can't wait.
@IronMan28 Skip the wedding and buy the game. You'll be happier for it. Just tell your sister you got the runs or something. She'll understand.
@BAN I'd do that, but all of my siblings will be there, along with my nephews that I (and my wife and kids) rarely see. I'm almost obligated to go because I actually like my family, lol.
@IronMan28 I cannot wait for the switch indie humble bundle. I loved padding my Wii U and 3ds with the last ones.
@Roam85 I didn't end up benefiting from the bundles because I owned every game in them. That's made me more hesitant to buy Switch Indies, for better or for worse. But the irony is that some Indies have come forward with news that their games have done well on Switch, and I've not supported that many of them and I used to make it a point to pay full price on most third-party games for Wii U.
Gimme gimme gimme. Want want want.
@Kalmaro
This has missed the window then. Wii U was relevant for about an hour on November 28th, 2012.
Why is the download size of this game smaller than the first one? I thought there's suppose to have more content?
