@Znake Great list. I want a real F-zero so bad. tired of all these knock-offs that never seem to get things quite right. And hopefully it wouldn't be barebones either. A new WaveRace would be killer! A new Diddy Kong Racing would be incredible (it's one of the best mario karts ever) how about an open world 3D Donkey Kong!!?
@DreemWeever Do you play competitively? at what rank? and, after playing on Xbox, have you immediately gone back and tried a match on Switch? I bet if you did that you'd see a huge difference. I'm Champ2 on pc, and can barely play at platinum on Switch. doesn't matter which controllers, wired or bluetooth, handheld or docked, on a high refresh/response rate gaming monitor (i know a lot of tv's introduce latency) the input lag is very bad.
@DreemWeever Rocket League is indeed hands-down the best e-sports game every made. It's incredibly accessible and easy to understand, but the gameplay has untold levels of depth, mainly due to it being physics based and you have to actually learn to control yourself and control the ball.
That being said, unfortunately the Switch version is the Worst version of RL, as it has crazy high input lag. And psyonix refuses to acknowledge or address it.
@CelS I was wondering if the Karate Kid movies were popular in the UK? They were some of my favorite movies growing up, and I love Cobra Kai now. The corny 80's is done well, and they incorporate so many throwbacks etc for fans of the original films. Stranger Things is peak modern day 80's aesthetic! Easily one of my favorite shows.
Lonely Mountain is much better than Descenders. Rocket League is the best sports game, period. I can understand wanting some other games to mix it up though. Everyone love cart racers and some of us enjoy a relaxing game like pool or golf.
@Yosher it comes from China. Let me inform people here, that Chinese (in their culture) don't even have the concept of "intellectual property." If a good idea exist, anybody is free to use it. if a product is popular, everybody will copy it. It's a highly highly competitive and cutthroat society and everyone wants their slice of the pie. On one hand, I agree someone who came up with a great idea deserves rewards. On the other hand, I can understand that very concept of owning an idea is absurd, and if it's a good idea if would surely be best for the world that it be shared freely.
@LittleGhost I actually enjoy DQ series more than FF. It has a sense of humor and more coherent stories. It probably also factors in that DQ 1 (or Dragon Warrior as it was called in the USA) was my first RPG ever. Such nostalgia.
@BartoxTharglod DQ XI on 3ds is one of the coolest releases ever! With the ability to play either in topdown 2d or 3d. I still need to play through it, just haven't found the time. I would love a new Dragon Quest Heros: Rocket Slime game ! Even porting the d ones to Switch would be amazing.
@falkyn I am against subscription services and basically never do free trials either. I'm not going to waste my time tying my files to a specific service, or starting a game I won't have time to finish during the trial etc etc. Burritos on the other hand, have real world value.
When I hear cards I am immediately turned off. I played CCG's as a kid, and enjoyed them. But digital cards? I simply don't understand the appeal, or how anyone ever thought it would be an engaging way to play a videogame.
@iLikeUrAttitude the boring gameplay is just to waste time while you delve into the real meat-and-potatoes of the series: trying to differentiate one title from another!
Think of it like those, compare these photos and see if you can spot the difference, games. Only each new photo costs $60
@the_beaver @conditionals That sounds like adventure (exploration?) games to me. In my mind metroidvania needs some decent platforming and definitely is side-scrolling. I'm a Metroid fan, and a huge Castlevania fan! (One of my all-time favorite series)
@SteamEngenius when I gave it a try, it seemed somewhat promising. but what it really did was make me want to go back and play Skyrim again. I'm actually going to play through Morrowind now as I only played it as a kid and didn't get far.
"top-down metroidvania" doesn't make sense. I see in the initial review people also called-out the tendency to call everything a metroidvania. I hadn't heard of or seen this game before, but it does look rather interesting! from the screenshots anyway, not the box art.
I played a demo of Musuo game once. That was enough to say I've played them all. It's fun for about 5 minutes. After that, I'd have to return to being about 10 years old to get any more enjoyment from one of these games.
Now going to play through this on my laptop. Without a subscription fee!!!! Imagine that! I feel lucky to have grown up before subscriptions ruined everything. The only subscription I wanted back then was to Nintendo Power magazine.
@Royalblues I understand that.
I still enjoy anime but not like I did when I was younger. And it is nice when people come up with new ideas instead continually rehashing old, but that's much more easily said than done haha.
On another note, I think there is a novelty factor at play too. For example, eastern developers may enjoy making an Old West game or medieval Europe style game, because it's different and interesting for them. And opposite for western developers. One good example is Ghost of Tsushima developed by an American company, and widely regarded as the best samurai game ever.
@Royalblues I don't know, I think it looks pretty good and like they are putting real time and work into it. I would love this type of game set in Japan (or fictional east asian country as they say lol) and I think the characters designs are great. I really ejoyed Stardew Valley but thought the characters designs and portraits were the worst part. luckily there are mods for that (if you play on pc)
I only played Skyward Sword after having played Breath of Wild. I can see inspirations for BotW, but it feels like such a huge step back I didn't enjoy it and quit pretty early. A link to the Past (and Between Worlds) and BotW are by far my fav Zelda games.
NA because blue background it much much better. Like others I enjoy the character placement better on JA version, but that pink background makes everything muddled.
@AndyC_MK111 I humbly disagree and would counter that you are missing the point. In rocket league the ball doesn't stick to anybody, there is no pushing a button to pass or shoot, you can't just hold a direction hit pass. You have to actually control the ball. There are actual skills with just dribbling the ball. 1v1 is exciting and engaging and requires different tactics than team play. And, if you manage a good passing play with another human, it's a beautiful thing! All of this is much more like a real sport than any other sports game. Anybody watching RL can see that it's soccer. But That's not the point.
@AndyC_MK111 rocket league is more of a football game than actual football games are. People only have control over themselves, and everything is done manually. I don't doubt people get very good at fifa or whatever. But there are set moves and animations and etc etc. That make up the gameplay. Not so with rocket league. It's an entirely different, and more visceral experience. Closer to the real thing.
After playing Rocket League, with actual physics and skill involved in dribbling, passing, shooting, everything, I simply can't go back to games that have a "pass button" or "shoot button"
@Ralizah it's taking extra long to port to switch (which apparently is pretty easy considering it's basically just android versions) because they focus all their time and effort on the cash-grabby gambling updates.
I wish they'd fix the Switch version. Input lag makes it unplayable competitively. I post this on every RL article. And psyonix doesn't care. they only care about releasing more cosmetic crap to sell instead of fixing the game.
