Switch owners located in North America can currently claim a free trial for the base version of Switch Online. This offer is available to players in the US and Canada who have previously activated a free trial and don't currently have a subscription. If you're already an existing subscriber though, this offer isn't available to you.
This trial will give you access to Nintendo Switch games online, and will also allow you to play the libraries of NES and SNES games, and make use of Save Data Cloud support. Keep in mind, N64 and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games are part of the 'Expansion Pack' premium tier - so to access that content, you'll just have to pay extra.
Nintendo yesterday added three new games to the NES and SNES services. You can learn more in our previous story:

Let's see...NSO is $20 a year so... that free week is worth almost 40 whole cents!
I honestly can't imagine not having basic NSO. Even without the retro games, online and cloud saves are essential. I guess it depends what games you play, but surely most Switch owners have one of the Nintendo games with online play. I guess if they don't play e.g. Mario Kart 8 too often the trial might get them to resubscribe.
A free trial for the expansion would be nice...
@FishyS I'm the weirdo haha, I don't have NSO nor PS+. I have no desire to play anything online so I just play single player stuff pretty much all the time. I do wish I could just buy the retro stuff, though, and I agree $20 a year isn't too bad.
I'm waiting for Mario Strikers Battle League reviews to see what the single player content is like and haven't pre-ordered for these reasons too.
I usually play earthbound every summer so I would probably just one and done it.
I will.
when is the last day we can start it?
Damn! I thought it was another free game trial for NOA region, I misread sorry.
At least let me play Ristar for 7 days
Im the same as @Arzewn i dont play online at all. I do however have nintendo online but i always buy the Tetris physical version as it comes with a year online, then i sell the Tetris game 😂
I buy 1 month a year on PS just so i can update my cloud and thats it. Couple of games id like to dabble in but i certainly wont take out a yearly sub. Its a great idea but i never get round to playing the PS+ games.
The basic subscription doesn't need a demo. It's the next tier level that does to rope in existing base sub users
A subscription would cut into my burrito funds..
You'd think the sacrifice would be an easy one to make. The burrito however has won every time im confronted with the ultimatum.
@falkyn Wise choice indeed
@falkyn I am against subscription services and basically never do free trials either.
I'm not going to waste my time tying my files to a specific service, or starting a game I won't have time to finish during the trial etc etc.
Burritos on the other hand, have real world value.
As others have said here why don't Nintendo give free trials of Expansion pack if they're so confident in it. I'm sure some people will end up upgrading if they get a taste of it.
@FishyS another weirdo here. I agree cloud saving is essential which is why I wish they offered it for free. I may grab this free trial or pay for a month at some point down the line to update my cloud saves, but I don’t play anything online except occasionally the free games like Fortnite.
As for the retro games, maybe it’s just psychological, but I can’t bring myself to put time into playing anything that I may not have access to a few years down the line. I get all the arguments for a subscription service and I actually think it’s good for them to have it as an option for those who want it, but I wish they’d also let you buy the games and honor that purchase going forward as a company, rather than as a platform, the way Steam does. If they did that they’d have more of my money than either of us could imagine.
@FishyS My sister made the family plan and included me. I've been on NSO for 6 months and I've only played online 5 or 6 times. I don't mind cloud saving. To me it does not matter. I don´t play single player games. I don´t like. Multiplayer games like Rocket League, Mario party, Just Dance....cloud saving or not...doesn´t matter..
If my sister does not renew the family plan, good bye NSO for me.
The games i played online on NSO:
I have Mario Party Suuperstars but never tried to play online. I think NSO too limited for my taste.
On Steam, I play online every day, because the connection quality is much better than Nintendo's and it´s free. And because the most of online players playing Fighting Games (my favorite genre) are there 24 hours.
@FishyS On the other side of the coin. I can't imagine PAYING for NSO unless you really like Smash or MK. Have no need for cloud backups and renting a couple 30 year old SNES games I could easily emulate is not very enticing.
@SteamEngenius I generally agree with you (although personally for me not having cloud storage would be nerve-wracking) but the percentage of Switch owners who own Animal Crossing or Mario Kart or Smash or Mario Maker (ok, this last one is smaller but my personal favorite) is just very high. Plus Pokemon games (not sure how many use the online features) or other games like Mario Strikers.
It's cheap enough that if you play any of those games with online NSO seems 'ok' but Tetris 99 and the retro games etc. is a nice perk.
I would be curious what percentage of really 'active' Switch players have NSO. Presumably it has gone down some or Nintendo wouldn't be offering more free trials.
@BoilerBroJoe I also don't really like 'renting' games online. I especially hate the rented DLC on expansion pack since those are new games. For basic NSO, I know I will always play online games and it is cheap enough I know I will keep NSO for the Switch's lifetime so it doesn't feel like renting to me, but if you're not in that same boat of keeping NSO long-term I agree it would suck to lose your retro playthroughs. Of course Switch won't be supported forever but I'll probably buy the similar basic NSO-type-thing on the next device and keep paying for the same retro games forever. 😆
@FishyS
When 99% of the games you play are single player, switch online is not a necessity.
I guess that's not a bad deal
Would be cool if Nintendo did an Expansion Pass trial for those of us that already have Nintendo Online.
I can't be bothered to play old SNES and NES games with a 7 day expiry date. Doesn't sound like fun at all. Does NSO have actual servers yet? I found online games were often unplayable. Even for free, I'm not interested.
@Joeynator3000 agree
I have gotten the My Nintendo trial for 100 platinum points, then at least 4+ of these that say "even if you already used a trial", but have never remembered to redeem a single time, until it's expired, lol. 1 week isn't long enough, especially when I'm playing games on other consoles. Actually, I'm grinding through SMTV daily, recently, & i still wouldn't redeem the trial, so i think it's more that i wouldn't bother while in the middle of a game. There's no point in wasting my data cap towards downloading these games that i need to remember to try within 7 days. The chance of me subscribing is zero, so it's probably not meant for people like me anyways.
@FishyS it's funny, i play my switch almost daily, and don't own (or plan to own) any of the games you mentioned (tho Pokemon Legends Arceus is a possibility of it goes on sale). I may be in the minority, but I'm sure I'm not alone.
@Arzewn "I have no desire to play anything online so I just play single player stuff pretty much all the time."
I felt like I was the only one..
