Pokémon games have had their fair share of criticism over the years, often specifically targeting their visuals. It seems like such criticism has only increased in time, too, with the likes of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Sword & Shield, and even the recently announced Pokémon Scarlet & Violet all receiving significant heat from fans over their graphical styles.
Well, Twitter user @pokeyugami has created what we believe may well be the most perfect realisation of a 3D Pokémon game we've seen yet. By creating a kind of cel-shaded effect and utilising the art style of Pokémon character designer Ken Sugimori, @pokeyugami has created a fantastic blend of old and new.
It looks gorgeous, right? We're assuming the environment in question here is Viridian Forest from Pokémon Red & Blue, with creatures typical to that particular area - like Pikachu, Weedle, and Caterpie - all roaming around. Granted, it's probably lacking in detail in some areas, like the glaring white background, but the main protagonist looks incredible!
Chances are Game Freak will never opt for a style like this for their mainline Pokémon games, sadly, but we can still dream. Still, it's clear that the team are slowly but surely getting to grips with 3D visuals, with Scarlet & Violet looking pretty nice in some places!
What do you think of the art style displayed here? Do you wish Pokémon games would look like this? Let us know!

The artistry that went into this is fantastic.
But also WHEW having so much white in moving graphics is a nightmare for the eyes.
It looks good and is nostalgic…but I wouldn’t personally want an entire game in that style. It’s way too washed out, in my opinion.
I don't like this at all, sorry but I just don't. I respect the creator but just looking at it would probably give me a migraine. Give me the artstyle in the games any day over this. Sorry not sorry.
You know what would be cool? A remake of Pokemon BW (or B2W2) in the 2D HD style
It's very good for what it is, just not something I would personally want. Maybe if the brightness was toned down a bit? That Pikachu is a highlight though.
Add with some proper color and it will looks great in my opinion.
@Shepdawg1 My thoughts too.
the environment doesnt work
The style def yes, but the white colors are just too much.
But yes its amazing.
This is actually what I’ve always wanted from 3D Pokémon
As a big fan of the old school Pokemon art I love this.
"The perfect [whatever] doesn't exi..." is probably the worst meme ever created, but I'll try to restrain the calls to crucify the author of this piece.
I don’t think any of you understand how much I love this. I wish so bad this were real and/or an official release of some sort.
This is in-freaking-credible
@Dr_Corndog I'll use it every day from now on, just for you.
Let’s go has the best in game art style by far come at me
@ChromaticDracula Agreed. This looks better than any of the existing Pokémon Switch games imo. Would be a dream come true
@Dr_Corndog Did someone say crucify? Now where did I put that pitchfork
This looks amazing as a proof of concept.
I think it would get very tiresome as a full game though.
I would, however, love to see a full colour manga/comic in this style.
This looks fantastic. I don't personally mind the use of white (it's very in keeping with early Pokemon art, which is cool), but I do wish it had a skybox, even just a very minimal one.
Too much white. Where're my sunglasses...
looks horrid
I would pick this game up in a heartbeat honestly, looks fantastic!
Love it!
Much warmer and closer to the original concept art than anything else we've seen.
squeals in Gen 1
This is basically the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remake style mixed with Ken Sugomori's original artwork, and I need it in full this instant
Fantastic. Too much exposure, anyway, but that could be balanced.
Love the look of it but a whole game like that would hurt my eyes. But they're definitely into something here.
Article headlines really should give exposure to the artwork involved, and entice you to click based on the merits of the shared work.
What I'm saying is, this work is so good you don't need to clickbait this at all.
I love that so much artistry went into this and it’s not just stock scenery in unreal engine…but ultimately it doesn’t quite work.
It’s a lot to look at! There’s visual noise everywhere! And keeping the tile-based layout goes against the natural feel of the rest.I think with some tweaks it could get there and I really do commend the effort though. If nothing else it would be an amazing filter option!
I quite like it to be honest. It actually goes for an artistic style.
I love the idea behind it and I think it would look great during short bursts but playing a 30hr long game with this art style would REALLY start to strain on the eyes at about the 3 hour mark so I'm personally mixed on it.
Meh. I would rather they make the games look more like the cartoons, anime style. It can be done, look at Ni No Kuni, etc.
It looks great buuuuuut not for a game. Maybe if is used for an anime special or something, that would be awesome.
While this looks pretty neat, it also hurts my eyes.
Looks awful 😖. Why not use the same style that the anime uses? Cant be that demanding. I mean Wind Waker did a great job replicating that cartoon style back in 2002
It's almost perfect, a bit too bright for my eyes.
Reminded me so much of when I was a kid reading through the Pokemon Blue manual/instruction booklet.
I think it can be improved a little, but it's otherwise totally gorgeous. I LOVE the official 90s art for Pokémon Gens I and II, and this is beyond what I would have ever envisaged for a proper Gen I remake.
The Let's Go games were embarrassingly safe, and BD/SP even more so.
i so tired of Kanto
@mariomaster96 You will get a barebones rushed 'faithful' BW remake and you will love it.
I prefer Pokemon Snap...
@RubyCarbuncle The grass is way too high in contrast compared to the rest of the scene. Yeah it hurts my eyes with the unbalance
Beautiful would have been amazing to see the last two remakes in this style.
that's dope! i want it!
Gimme x2000, I'd lower the brightness though...
Even when we get to the switch 9, Pokémon games still won't look that good
@Royalblues Just out of curiosity, why last ever? Just feel like there's nothing left for the franchise to give you after that point?
That looks frickin' AMAZING!!! This should be the art direction for the franchise from now on.
Let's Go still has the best art style by far. All it needs is full 3D and proper character models to be perfect! Maaybe Let's Go Johto will address that..?
@AlexanderDaniels Interesting comment considering I disliked BDSP for being so faithful.
This looks amazing
They have the right idea, but this would be disgusting to play.
I don't wanna see this for main series, but the inevitable NEXT gen 1 remake would be fantastic in this sort of style.
I love it. Reminds me of the original pokemon cards.
Why was the original Pokémon video game artwork like this? I love it and everything, I’ve just always wondered what made them go with this vs. matching the art from the anime and toys
I get the art style, but that’s a little too hard on the eyes, IMO. Adjust the colours and it would be nicer.
The mons look well enough but the humans look like bad Toriyama art.
@RubyCarbuncle
Yeah, no. I don't like how washed out everything looks.
Ok, I’m going to be honest, damn I wasn’t thinking it would look this good, I didn’t know I needed this in my life till today!
@Savage_Joe That's gotta be the worst opinion I've ever heard 😂
Loojs amazing
... I would hate to play a game in this style tho.
@Royalblues Nah don’t be sorry, awesome reply. FWIW I agree that with how the series is going, Gen 5 is the peak. I pretty much only play the titles up to that point because I’ve had similar disappointments.
When I think of Pokémon, I think of the sprite based era. So I get what you mean completely when you want to remember it as B2W2.
@moodycat I really enjoy the art and style of the Pokemon Quest game. I would love a real pokemon game with those assets.
I will kill to play this game
It's... So beautiful. Chunky pikachu, bug catcher, even little Red... It's like my childhood is walking across the screen.
I actually want to know how he made this it’s a form of cell shading right
Definitely would prefer that art style over pushing their so-so 3d versions.
Also I think quite a few of you need glasses if that gives you headaches. Would be completely fine for a normal person, although they could do a bit more to lessen the whites/add more greys, but then again I never have anything on full blast brightness.
Goodness gracious, do some of you need more sunlight or something? Are you watching this video in a darkened room with the windows blacked out? It looks gorgeous. I much prefer this to a screen full of black like in Triangle Strategy. That game puts me to sleep.
This is EXACTLY what I'd want from a Pokemon remake - actually adhering to an art style. If Legend Arceus with all its empty space had gone with the painterly style of its reveal video, including plenty of white space, it would have done wonders for that game.
While I agree the 3d the games have rn look horrid, thats pretty obvious, but I wouldnt want this to be what pokemon looks like. I get what its going for, a nostalgic piece of art that captures the gen1 aesthetic very nicely.
My problem is that while it captures the look, it limits itself to the early gen1 color palette which in 3d doesnt pop very much.
Id say this is a good start, but rather they take the aesthetics of the games illustrative art of today which lends itself to more vibrance.
I love the art style here. However, I agree with it being too white and not exactly what I want from what I would want it to look like
Looks a little washed out, but it could work...
Love this! The recent Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remake is the closest official game to this style.
No, it looks terrible! All the color is dried out much worse than even the 3DS monster models, and why the heck is the sky a plain white?!
