Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch OLED Model Vs Steam Deck

thegametb

Are you sure it isn't the dock you're using that won't charge the Steam Deck (while connected to a TV)? Maybe you don't have enough power charging or the hub isn't PD compliant? I've read from others that have no issues charging their device while in a hub. Your mileage may vary until they come out with the official dock I suppose.

Re: Video: We Instantly Make Nintendo Switch Sports Better

thegametb

I like it, doesn't matter what Billy from down the street says. It's actually gotten me to play online to get the rewards. I can also play with friends/family online, which seems important these days with a pandemic and all.

I thought Wii Sports Resort just needed online capabilities. Nintendo Switch Sports brought that and I couldn't be any happier. Could it have more than the bare minimum without having to grind for it? Sure, but obviously that's not the state of play we live in these days. I'm happy that they aren't charging us for extra stuff (at least not yet).

I would have liked up to 8 in an online private, but it's fine for me. It's very "Nintendo" with how they go about doing things, like I still can't figure out how to add secondary player without them being a "Guest" account (I keep getting an error). Outside of that, it's more of what I played on Wii. Personally, that's what I asked for, Wii Bowling + online parties.

Re: Wreckfest Screeches Onto Switch Later This Year

thegametb

This game is a blast to play. I have it on Xbox (I think it's on Game Pass too) and I've been waiting for this since it got teased year's ago for Switch. I'm glad it didn't get forgotten or cancelled. It also sounds like this'll be some sort of deluxe/ultimate edition with all the DLC included.

Re: Review: NASCAR Heat Ultimate Edition+ - An Ugly, Unremarkable Racer

thegametb

I took a chance on this and I don't regret it. I don't care for graphics as long as the gameplay loop is compelling. Graphics aren't "amazing", but you're dealing with under powered device. I didn't anticipate this to look like Xbox One or PS4 (I also didn't believe the hype of a magical 4K system), but it looks a lot better than I thought it would have.

It's quite impressive to see 40 cars per race. When most sim racing games usually opt for graphics and severely nerf the amount of vehicles, it's really cool to see 40 cars running down the raceways on the Nintendo Switch.

It's okay that you like arcade racers, that's fine, but to say this is just turning left is quite ignorant. While the track layout is usually "turning left", there's several road courses, no baby bumpers (keep you on the track), 180mph+, etc. I haven't played a NASCAR game in ages, so currently playing on Normal mode. Even then the AI is quite aggressive, they will draft, bump and have zero qualms on spinning you out. So while you're "turning left", it's mostly staying focused for longer than 3 min races.

There are no short cuts, no shells or mushrooms, just you and your driving abilities. It sounds easy to just drive the same way over and over again, but it's far from that. More so on Switch, because it's all or nothing, so you tend to tap the gas on turns as opposed to easing off the trigger.

It can get real intense with the AI bumping and drafting everyone, vehicles can get real loose in seconds and you're spun out. I have yet to adjust a lot of the settings, but you can make it a bit more intuitive with enabling full damage, DNF on, longer races, up the fuel consumption and tire wear to make it more of a simulation game. At that point, you're driving for the long haul. It becomes vehicle management, while still trying to be competitive.

The game by default has a lot of driving aids, which is really welcomed on Switch due to the lack of analog triggers. Overall, I'm 100% pleased with Nascar on Switch. The best part.. you can play it on-the-go with typical Switch sacrifices.

I'm casual with games like Nascar, WRC or Grid, but also respect them enough to know they're more than just simple or boring games. Everyone has their niche or style, that's okay. I appreciate it when I see games like these, because everyone deserves to have fun on their favorite handheld and this only attracts more mainstream audience. It's also welcoming to see more diverse games on Switch, expanding genres or bringing new ones only makes it better a place for everyone to enjoy.

Re: GTA Trilogy Dev Responds To Fan Frustrations, Says Updates Are Already In The Works

thegametb

I'm having fun with it so far. SA does look better on XSX, but honestly, it's mostly the same on Switch with the obvious visuals being toned down. Currently going through GTA 3 on Switch and draw distance isn't much different.

I have a few stutters/framerate dips at random spots (possibly when there's a lot happening), but it's 100% playable. I still find it weird they opted to not add shadows for indoors on any platforms, they seem a bit more washed out on Switch.

If you want a better looking (similar) game on Switch, try the Saints Row ones.

Zero regrets getting GTA trilogy on Switch. Overall, it's what I expected on Switch. I personally think Switch version should have been the focal point, they've been everywhere else except on Nintendo. The only console GTA game I didn't own was SA, so glad I'm able to play that on Game Pass and Switch.

PS: Also, the short draw distance makes any race mission about as difficult as it did 20 years ago. AI acts so suicidal while you have cars popping in right in front of you.

Re: Nascar Heat Ultimate Edition+ Speeds Onto Switch Next Month

thegametb

Looks pretty interesting. Analog or digital triggers, doesn't make a different for me in these racers cuz you're constantly easing in to corners and brake tapping. I don't think NASCAR 21 has burnouts, so I guess that's one perk this game has.

I'm curious as to how it plays and feels on Switch. Not a big NASCAR fan, but I'd consider if on a sale.

I'm pretty excited for WreckFest to get on Switch, I wanna see gameplay of that. Like NASCAR 1, I'm curious to see how it performs on the handheld considering the load times were atrocious on Xbox One. Pretty fun game once you get in to it though, a minute later.

Re: Nintendo Share Value Continues Downward Trend As Major Investor Reportedly 'Dumps' Stock

thegametb

Seeing this just reaffirms what I noted about their sudden article days ago of the fabled Switch Pro. Bloomberg is like a bitter ex, they were wrong about the Switch Pro after fanboying it for 2 years. The next best thing? Fabricate more rumors and post negative press against Nintendo.

Nintendo being down is still following a high of several years that I don't think anyone would have predicted with the uncertainty following the Wii U. When you can't always be at the top. Let's note Nintendo's down right now without acknowledging the up they've had for 4 years..

Re: Review: Metroid Dread - Quite Possibly The Best Metroid Game Ever Made

thegametb

Not really that impressed with the close-up screen shots. Hoping it gets a day-1 patch to clean things up. They look very low poly, flat and lack of anti aliasing looks like we're playing on low settings.

I hope it's good tho. I enjoyed Samus Returns a lot. They need more Metroid love on Switch, she's almost as forgotten as Luigi is.

Re: Metroid Dread's File Size Is Smaller Than First Thought

thegametb

It's a 2.5D game, why were we expecting a big file size? It was just a placeholder for a game that was not fully completed yet.

Why must we speculate on every inch of everything.. who cares?

Just enjoy the fact that we have a new Metroid game on the horizon.

Also, they glossed over one of the most important things from any eShop listing, it is Data Cloud compatible.

Re: Rumour: Developers Have Reportedly Been Working On "4K Switch Games"

thegametb

@Dm9982 You see the Steam Deck as the perfect model for Nintendo to spin their wheels on how to develop the next Switch iteration. 4K? No. I don't want to see Link or Mario in 4K. I want a stable 720p / 1080p before I ask for anything more.

A lot of these people don't get is Nintendo won't match Xbox or PlayStation in the PC spec war. They move to the beat of their own drum, their games are vastly different from what the other companies produce.

If anything, Nintendo did their magic and tweaked enough to make the OLED stand out with a vibrant screen that compliments Nintendo games with their bright color palettes.

Re: Rumour: Developers Have Reportedly Been Working On "4K Switch Games"

thegametb

It is also reported that Bloomberg lies.

Having people tinker with dev kits for future projects isn't anything new, it's how games get developed alongside new hardware. I do like how it's for a Nintendo console that doesn't exist. I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo has been working on the next iteration of Switch, as they should. You always go back to the drawing board, making refinements with updates until you reach a point that you can make something smaller, faster, better, most importantly cheaper.

If I were a betting man, what this is.. is Bloomberg acting a bit spiteful over this Switch Pro that never transpired, more so since they've been the ones championing those rumors since day-one. Coincidentally (NOT!), they publish this somewhat speculative article a week before Switch OLED drops? No, doesn't sound petty AT ALL.

Some media outlets do nothing but put out click bait articles and news reports for views and ad revenue. Definitely never too big to try and make a company look bad for their own gain.

Considering the timing of this article coming out and how wrong the were with Switch Pro, I'd file this under the category of slander and defamation. Nintendo posting a tweet about it doesn't admit anything, they could be like me, tired of hearing about this time and time again. I never saw nor will I ever see Bloomberg as a credible source for anything.

Anyone can be partially right when they take 40 guesses. What's that saying, a broken clock is right twice a day.

Re: Random: Check Out These Mock-Ups Of GameCube For Nintendo Switch Online

thegametb

@victordamazio Honestly, it should have been included with your current subscription, because it's still very much bare bone service. Considering how Bluetooth appeared with all these caveats, there's probably many reasons why some things won't ever come over until a proper Switch 2 or an iteration that has a beefier motherboard that can handle on-going things like chat without murdering your battery.

Things they could add without taxing the system would be groups/folders and a way to check for game updates. Years later, I've trained myself to waste time scanning individual games for updates before going on a trip or a few times a month, because I really dislike when you have some time to play a game and first thing is sit through an update.

Re: How To Use Bluetooth Headphones On Switch - Connect AirPods To Nintendo Switch

thegametb

@thinkhector Nice! I carry my little GuliKit ROUTE+ PRO Bluetooth Transmitter inside the red zipper Mario pouch I got from My Nintendo. Downside about mine, it has a lot of tiny little parts.

I also use the Skull & Co GripCase.. the attachment to move the adapter behind my Switch doesn't fit, so I have to be extremely careful with the dongle that it doesn't break or cause damage to my port.

For road trips/lobbies/doctor visits, the GuliKit + my Sam Buds work fine. There's a slight input delay, but I don't really play anything with super twitchy reaction speeds with headphones. I'd much prefer actual headphones, but I don't want to feel like I'm moving out with 5 bags/cases lol, so I grab my small buds.

Re: How To Use Bluetooth Headphones On Switch - Connect AirPods To Nintendo Switch

thegametb

Honestly, Bluetooth dongles work way better and more efficiently than this Bluetooth. I commend their effort.. 4 years later.. but it's really hit or miss. I found the best experience to be:

Docked. Headphones (not truly wireless L/R earbuds) + pro controller.

Handheld/Tabletop. Headphone (again, not wireless independent L/R like AirPods, Samsung Buds, Google Buds, etc) + Pro controller (tabletop) or attached joycons (handheld).

Using joycons in tabletop and docked get really iffy with headphones in, just gets worse with truly wireless (independent L/R) earbuds. A lot of factors play in to this.. wireless interference of other things surrounding you and the distance you are to the devices.

Also, the big thing after every update.. remember to update your joycons as well. That would most definitely give you better performance, but it still isn't perfect. That's why Nintendo put some serious limitations with Bluetooth, because they knew the connectivity is garbage on Switch.

Nintendo's approach to Bluetooth feels like when you were a kid and your folks allowed you to have ice cream... BUT not before dinner, before bed or on school days.

I hope everyone gets lucky and have very little issues. A couple of things I experienced (depending on my distance and interference with other devices) were input lag, audio latency and some distortion/grainy/fuzziness if you tried to max your headphones. A lot of these issues seemed to happen when using joycons while docked. Pro controller wasn't as noticeable, if at all.

It is a good attempt, but I'm not sure if I should appreciate them adding it or be annoyed that it took them this long to implement something that is pretty common in modern devices. By any means is this a seamless process, it's quite clunky and very Nintendo. Apparently it disconnects if you're re-ordering/pairing controllers, yet they didn't think to add a shortcut or a way to re-connect your headphones.. so you either have to turn them off/on or jump in to the settings and connect them again. Which also doesn't work perfectly either.. some times it works first try, other times you have attempt several times, turn them off/on again or restart your Switch.

EDIT: Just as an FYI, I used SkullCandy Hesh3 headphones in my testing. I might try to see how difficult it is to pair my Samsung Galaxy Buds+ and my old Bose SoundLink speaker. I'm afraid to try this with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, because that game by default is pretty quiet.

Re: My Time At Portia Version 3.0 Update Adds New Quests, New NPC And More

thegametb

The game was underrated. It has a lot of charm, NPCs feels like they have things to do. It is nowhere near perfect, but I'm pretty sure they made it clear a bit ago that the Switch would never get anymore updates..? I don't know where this update mirrors the PC and other ports, but I'm quite impressed they did this years later.

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED

thegametb

Kickstand is a nice fix, but kind of useless for me, since I usually rock a Skull & Co GripCase on my systems. The only issue with me over the screen was while outside, it's too reflective and doesn't get bright enough.

Any dark games were unplayable outdoors. Ironically enough, around that time I said they should port Mario Sunshine, because the color palette is very complimentary to outdoor gameplay. Unfortunately, something like Diablo 3 or Doom is not.

Re: Gabe Newell: Pricing Valve's Switch-Like Steam Deck Was "Painful"

thegametb

@hammers1man Realistically, I see this as a casual gamer thing. Those who play competitively will not be entertained by this. They don't use controllers/gamepads on PC anyhow nor will the sacrifice their precious 4K ultra settings for this. For me, it's perfect I think. I am 100% casual, I play when I can find time between and work and family. I do love a pretty game, but gameplay means more to me than highest settings.

For me, this is to unlock a big catalog of games that won't ever get ported over.. and if they do, I'd save a lot of money by not giving in to "Switch tax" on old ported games.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch OLED Model

thegametb

@NEStalgia That's the thing I hate about the current culture we live in. You have like one window of opportunity and if you don't get lucky, gotta hope there's another chance down the road or consider scalper shenanigans. I blame people with disposable income that don't care about price, to them it's more about boasting.. and I also blame manufacturing. they want to use covid as an excuse for low print numbers, but it's their greed that's making this an issue. Don't release new hardware or hell a new generation during one of the worst times in history. Corporations doesn't care who buys their product, as long as someone buys it.

Re: Poll: Pokémon Unite Is Imminent But Divisive - Are You Planning To Try It?

thegametb

I find it disgusting on how angry, bitter and righteous people have become. Everyone can have their views and subjective concepts, but I have never seen so much negativity in communities that should be about having fun and spending quality time. It's sad how toxic these places have become.

Everyone has a right to not like something, but I don't care to being politics or things that don't pertain to the subject matter. I really dislike Ubisoft and how they've been pushing their games in the last 10 years, but if I truly held them accountable for their actions, I would have never gotten to play Immortals Fenyx Rising or any of the more recent Assassin's Creed games. While I don't agree with all the mechanics and micro transaction ploys within them, I can still find enjoyment in these games without giving them extra money. I don't have an addictive behavior in that sense where I'm compelled to give them extra money to boost some ability or get a skin.

And the fact remains, the Internet crazies only make up a small fraction of game sales. Everyone gets so butt hurt down voting and commenting on "Not my Pokemon!".. "I hate Tencent!".. "I hate MOBA!" Guess what? None of that matters. You weren't playing or getting the game, so your vote doesn't count. The companies aren't folding, because they don't have your $20-60. They know there demo and it's the casual audience.. they don't exist in forums, on Twitter or in YouTube comments. They see an ad or YouTube video.. they don't consume their lives with ranting and raging or hold a grudge against some corporate entity. They give zero ***** about any of those things, for better or worse, they dictate with their wallets.

Whether we want to admit it or not, fact still remains casual games still lead the market in sales and concurrent users. We're all ***** gamers, whether it's MOBA, mobile or a hardcore shooter. Stop trying to make everything so toxic. You don't like something, cool. Don't give it any more attention. Move on to something you do like and enjoy it. Believe it or not, you can actually be nice on the Internet. I know it's a far stretch, but try it one day.

Re: Gabe Newell: Pricing Valve's Switch-Like Steam Deck Was "Painful"

thegametb

I cannot wait to play some ARPGs that won't ever make it to Switch. Like some have said, I would definitely reevaluate last gen ports to Switch from now on. That whole Switch tax is a kick to the nuts every time an old game gets re-released. I don't have the latest greatest desktop or laptop, so not sure yet how this will work and if it's in my best interest to consider any games out of what my PCs can run.

I'm also curious as to how Epic's launcher will run. Would be enticing to play some mobile GTA V.

Re: Zelda & Loftwing amiibo Impacted By "Unforeseen Shipping Delays" In The US

thegametb

Pretty neat tactic, Nintendo. Now you're delaying micro transactions too!

EDIT: I also think, because of "unforeseen" *****, fast travel should be patched in the game in a future update. You can't pay wall a quality of life feature, then the day before release say, "Remember when we told you it was coming out.. just kidding!" I'm sure it'll show up once everyone has either beaten it or been too frustrated to finish it.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch OLED Model

thegametb

@NEStalgia I've never tried to preorder from Amazon, just seems like a bad idea, because you're fighting with everyone else in the country over it. Best Buy did store pickup preorders and while that may sound better (in terms of human purchases vs bots it may be), you're also limited to like a handful per store, so it's still slim pickings. I was successful with Target.com.
