@Greenspan So you can lend the game to people who aren't in your family plan. So you have something to put on your shelf. So you can save space on your console's SSD. So when servers eventually go down you can still always have access to the game, even if it's not the original version. I mean... there ARE reasons.

@Not_Soos Agreed. Also that just isn't how things work. Nintendo farms out their IP like 2D Metroid, Smash Bros., and Star Fox to other studios. They are the big publisher and platform holder partnering with smaller studios where appropriate. They aren't a small studio looking for work.

@mr_benn It has a different body (modelled after a Genesis redesign I believe) and comes with the six button controller instead of the three button controller the original Genesis mini had in the west. It's also emulating Sega CD games so the emulation software is probably different or expanded. To my knowledge, besides the games themselves those are all the differences.

@lankysi Understandable, but there's a big difference between the amount of time and resources that needs to go into a remaster vs. a new game. Think about the prototyping, design, and iteration work alone that is saved when making a remaster.

So, the choice is really less between a remaster of an old Mario game vs. a new Mario game, and more between a remaster of an old Mario game and completing 1/10 the effort on a new Mario game.
