It seems like every third day there is news that another Indy title may be coming to the Wii U. Nintendo has clearly done an excellent job of enticing those studios. If only they could attract more mainstream third party support as well.
I don't think Nintendo wants to reveal a game when another game in the series is still yet to be released. They wouldn't want consumers looking past a game to the next one after it. That would adversely effect sales. We won't see what the untitled Zelda on the Wii U looks like until after Wind Waker HD has been released, nor will we get any confirmation for Majora's Mask 3D before we have A Link Between Worlds in our hands.
This is how I feel about this game at the moment as well. Additionally, what I believe was the only real weakness of the Galaxy games was how linear they were. From what I've seen of 3D World, that will be even more the case here. Fixed camera? Pfff
This is probably the only upcoming third party Wii U title that I'm super excited about other than Rayman: Legends. Sonic Lost World, has potential. We'll see.
Terribly disappointing, if true. With the Possible exception of Luigi U, all of these demos have already been played at other conferences, Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 already at E3 last year! How does this give everyone the E3 experience when E3 attendees will get their hands on Mario and Mario Kart while games like Pikmin 3 are hitting store shelves in just a couple of months anyway. If this is indeed the list of demos at Best Buy, I won't bother to make the trip.
The Wii U almost certainly won't sell as many units as the Wii, but I think it's ridiculous to think that The XB1 and PS4 are likely to outsell their predecessors either. The whole industry is going to need to hunker down for the next few years. Oh, and what is he talking about with the 3DS? The system is selling very well. Why doesn't this guy ever criticize Sony for the Vita?
This is an interesting idea. However, the Wii Remote Pointer and Nunchuck is still a far cry from a mouse and keyboard. When you are pointing the Wii Remote at your television, your hand is suspended in space. There is no stability, unlike a mouse which is constantly resting on a flat surface. It's the difference between taking a picture with vs. without a tripod. That stability allows for much greater precision. So while there may perhaps be greater potential to play strategy games on a Wii U than say on the PS4 or XB1, I find it hard to imagine when the keyboard and mouse remains far superior to Wii U hardware in this respect. As someone who has played his fair share of strategy games, I find it hard to imagine playing one and feel unencumbered without hot keys on a keyboard or the speed and precision of a mouse. That doesn't mean Pikmin 3 won't play wonderfully on the Wii U, but Pikmin was already playable on the Gamecube. I love Pikmin, but we're not talking about Age of Empires or StarCraft here.
At this point, I'm hoping for either a new Star Fox or a new IP. Retro has too much talent to work on anything a lesser developer could do just as well.
While I understand that consumers are against this, this may be ultimately a necessary measure for the industry. Games are getting more and more expensive to make, and every year more games don't see a return on the investment that was made in them. In the used game market, only the retailers/rental vendors see those additional profits, not the licensor, the the publisher, and not the developer. The alternative to this strategy of DRM may be to drive up the price of games, fill games with advertisemnts, or cut back on budgets. Unless games stop getting "bigger" the additional revenue has to come from somewhere.
I don't see the Wii U getting a ton of big name third party titles until Nintendo establishes the console with first party heavy hitters. Let's wait until after we get Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Pikmin, Wonderful 101 and anything else Nintendo has up its sleeves for 2013, Wii U sales go up, and then cry fowl when multiplatform games skip the Wii U. As it stands, it's hard to blame them.
I think Nintendo needs a new IP specifically designed for online multiplayer. It doesn't have to be a FPS, but it needs to be ambitious, something that many will regard as a must play. Look at what Halo did for the original Xbox. One IP can really expand a console's audience, if it's the right one.
@Tryken You should go back and play the first two Pikmin games. I think they're worth it, and if you get the Wii versions, you can even play them on your shiny new Wii U!
I feel like I still don't know enough about this game to be really excited. I expect this game will be very good, so I'm intrigued. But I think I need to see more before I can really look forward to it.
The market may have shrunk substantially enough, since the last generation, that it can no longer support 3 consoles. It'll be interesting to see how this generation plays out, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a big shift in the industry soon.
To get EA, not to mention other third party publishers, to support the Wii U, Nintendo needs to first drive sales and establish a large install base for the console with first party content, then somehow demonstrate that third party content will sell to Wii U owners. Easier said than done perhaps, but the Wii U's fortunes won't improve until that first party content finally arrives.
After the reception this game received on other platforms, what would be the point of releasing it on the Wii U? This isn't a slight against the Wii U, this is SEGA cutting its losses on a terrible game.
Pikmin, Wind Waker, and 101 are at the top of my list, though I'm almost definitely getting Rayman Legends, Yarn Yoshi, and Duck Tales, and both Boyonetta and Watch Dogs have my attention. I think Mario Kart U deserved to be on the list, but I suppose there wasn't much to say about it as we haven't seen a single screen for it yet...
@gatorboi352 I did know that the Wii U USB ports were USB 2.0. I did not know that the Wii U would only work with hard drives that were powered externally. That's pretty stupid. Thanks for the information.
It has exactly the same shiny black look, and the only light on it is white, matching the disc light on the Wii U perfectly. It doesn't require any power supply other than the single USB connection, supports USB 3.0 (if you ever want to use it with something other than the Wii U) and is far less expensive. That's the way I'd go.
3D Mario (Super Mario 3D Land), a classic Zelda remake (Ocarina of Time 3D), and Mario Kart (7) turned around the fortunes of the 3DS. Guess what's in the pipeline for the Wii U? It'll be fine, given time.
Gamestop is right on the money. The Wii U needs to be better communicated to the public, and needs more games. Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, and Lego City: Undercover should all help, but I don't think the Wii U will really take off until the holidays when Wind Waker and Mario Kart will likely be released.
This was a game just about every Wii U owner/prospective owner wanted. But once we have Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover, Mario Kart, Wind Waker HD, Yoshi's Yarn, 3D Mario, or whatever makes it to the Wii U before the Winter, will Rayman Legends be as appealing as it was? I already find myself caring less about this game.
@19Robb92 They've already delayed Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 a couple of times. They're clearly more interested in getting games right than getting them out early, as they always have been.
@Five-seveN I really don't like RPGs at all, but after playing the demo for Awakening, I was hooked. I think you should play the demo before you write this game off.
@bahooney They learned some things from the 3DS. The Wii U's launch library was much better than just Steel Diver and Pilot WIngs. The Wii U is sold for a loss suggesting Nintendo made an effort not to make the same pricing mistake they did with the 3DS. And with games like Rayman: Legends, Lego City: Undercover, and Game and Wario coming out in the next two months with Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 coming sometime before the midpoint of the year, Nintendo is doing a better job getting games to the Wii U than they did with the 3DS. Is it perfect? No. But it's not bad. As the games arrive, the sales will improve.
Nintendo did say there would ultimately be a Nintendo Direct focuses on third party titles for the Wii U. They have announcements to make, but Nintendo wants to make them in their own way and at their own time. Expect developers to remain tight-lipped until Nintendo releases whatever news they're sitting on. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint. As for Tomb Raider not being on the Wii U, as has been said before, can't win them all.
