Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Mastery Of Physical Game Sales Hides Limited Digital Growth

mjhopkins81

It's really not much of a shock, honestly, considering the paltry native storage capacity on the Switch. Unless you're willing to shell out $50+ for a high-capacity MicroSDXC card, you're essentially forced to purchase physical copies.

As much as I love Nintendo's consoles and handhelds, it's really time that they join the rest of the gaming world and offer 1TB of storage space, at a minimum.

Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?

mjhopkins81

@nessisonett To date, Zelda II still ranks in my top five. When I think of the games I had the most of playing, across the entire series, it's:

1.) Link to the Past
2.) Zelda II
3.) Wind Waker
4.) Link's Awakening
5.) Breath of the Wild

Re: Video: Hands-On With The 3DS Dragon Quest The West Never Got To Play

mjhopkins81

This was the first version that I played, and it was wonderful. Manicsounds had it right - going to the Tockle/Yocchi versions put you in the FC/SFC versions of the games, rather than the 16-bit-ish versions that are in the Definitive/S versions.

The transition to the PS4 version was weird, for me, as I didn't play it until the English version was released.

Re: What's The Difference Between Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl? Which Should You Buy? - All Version-Exclusive Pokémon

mjhopkins81

I've been at Brilliant Diamond for two days, now, and...I'm reminded why I didn't like the DS games.

I remember loving the Underground and digging, but the rest of it just felt like such a circuitous slog of backtracking to the same places, over and over again, and an annoying friend who keeps running.

Now, it's a Chibi circuitous slog with blurry landscapes and soulless characters.

I guess that, after the progress made in the series from HG/SS through SW/SH, with each set of games getting better (and even the enjoyable Let's Go games), to see BD/SP take such a parachute drag backward has been both annoying and depressing.

Beyond that, it's freaking 2021. You've created this "Home" infrastructure to connect multiple games. There is absolutely no excuse for not incorporating compatibility with games on Day One. It's the highest example of "lazy devs."

Re: Feature: "The eShop Is Just Way Too Slow" - Deku Deals Creator On Nintendo's Switch Storefront

mjhopkins81

Switch's entire UI is terrible, particularly after coming off of the Wii U/3DS UI wins.

No way to organize software; unintuitive social profile and friend management; an eShop seemingly designed by people who know nothing about how people actually shop (e.g., no shopping cart; awkward account management; clunky interface)...

It's just amazing that, back in 2017, when every other game studio got UI right (even XBOX), Nintendo continued to get it SO wrong.

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

mjhopkins81

@PhhhCough Because the "free games" given on XBOX Game Pass (which I still feel is a ripoff, but only because the games they give away are nothing I would ever play) aren't 20+ years old.

It's not like they're selling a static device (NES Mini/SNES Mini) that has a large number of AAA games that you then own (until the device dies); they're renting you games that are decades old and can almost all be obtained elsewhere for cheaper.

Re: Best Castlevania Games On Nintendo Consoles

mjhopkins81

I'm replaying Harmony of Dissonance, now—the one that this list says learned from the mistakes of Circle of the Moon.

Man, I'd forgotten how subpar the soundtrack is and how annoying the pulsating neon color outlines are.

It's an okay game, though.

Re: Feature: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

mjhopkins81

@MatthewTaranto Absolutely.

As a musician (by classical training, now abandoned for a job in infectious disease research), XI's score is probably one of the weakest in the series. None of it is "forgettable," but none of the tracks are really ones that are earworms in a GOOD way.

I couldn't forget the XI overworld theme, because it's just a simple march repeated over and over, again.

Re: Feature: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

mjhopkins81

@rjejr I think the open/empty world is why I loved VIII, so much.

On the PS2, it DID seem a bit barren, but with the addition of the visible monsters in the 3DS remake, I fell in love with it, all over again.

It was the first DQ game I'd picked up since IV, back in the 90s, and inspired me to go back and give VII a go, on the PS1.

I would hazard the opinion that VIII's overworld theme, "Strange World ~ Marching Through the Fields," is one of the best overworld themes in a game. It's not overly triumphant; not overly march-y (like XI's overworld theme, "The Hero Goes Forth with Determination"). It made running through the world seem peaceful and not stressful.

Re: Immortals Fenyx Rising DLC Release Dates Appear On The Switch eShop

mjhopkins81

I didn't think I would like this game, but picked it up during the Christmas Eve sale.

I've since put 75 hours into it, and enjoy it more than I did BotW, just because of the QoL improvements:

1.) The ability to "survey" the world around and use a radar to identify Points of Interest, rather than randomly climbing to the top of various structures and geographic land features on the off chance that you MIGHT find a Korok Seed;

2.) Music. I used to love Zelda music, but I can't remember a single note from BotW, which made it feel oddly isolating and uninviting to play;

3.) The characters are funny and bawdy, rather that awkwardly funny

Re: Soapbox: Here's How I'd Fix The Pokémon Series

mjhopkins81

I would like to see Pokemon do away with the need to sit through long, unskippable conversations.

I honestly couldn't care less about the story, but 90% of the conversations, I could live without, entirely.

Conversations with Mom. With Professor Tree. With your rival/friend. With the random "bad guy."

I just want to be able to skip them, without spamming the A-button.

Re: Poll: After 24 Hours, How Are You Getting On With Pokémon HOME?

mjhopkins81

It's okay. Not great, but not terrible. I like all of the extra data available, but it's not worth the extra cost (above that of Bank).

It would be nice if there were more of the Pokedex entries for each game in the series, but hey...can't ask for everything that Serebii and Bulbapedia provide for free, can you?

Re: Poll: What Features Would You Want In A Switch 'Pro'?

mjhopkins81

I would like to have more durable Joy-Cons where my character doesn't start running to the left without use input, and for the warranty to cover all parts of the system, rather that everything BUT the screen.

A protective screen cover (one that flips open and wraps around to the back) that comes standard would be nice, as well.

Re: Nintendo Goes Discount Crazy With Up To 80% Off 150 Switch Games (Europe)

mjhopkins81

Ugh.

Nintendo of Europe always gets the best stuff now.

Yes, yes - I know that, prior to this decade, Europe and the UK got the shaft, while the U.S. got all the good stuff - games that never made it to Europe, special editions, and Nintendo Power.

Now, the situations are reversed:

The UK and Europe get awesome special editions with Steelbook cases (Metroid, Luigi's Mansion, Majora's Mask, and Link's Awakening, to name a few); special edition bonus physical items are better; they get better games discounts.

Ugh.

Nintendo of America needs to get their act together.

Re: Dragon Quest Builders 2 Will Have Four DLC Packs And A Season Pass

mjhopkins81

@RupeeClock That's correct.

The Knickknack and Hotto Packs are Japanese New Year-themed and Japanese Architecture-themed, respectively, while the Aquarium Pack lets you build an aquarium, fill it with fish, and create glass structures through which you can see water (which requires a textures update when the pack releases). The Modernist pack lets you build what look like skyscrapers and museums, rather than Dragon Quest-specific thematic designs (Medieval, Desert, Cabin, Pyramid, et cetera).

Essentially, the native blocks you can find in the game are all based off of existing Dragon Quest imagery (specifically based on Dragon Quest II); the DLC packs provide "newer" options for people who want to create more modern looking designs in the hub island (from which you launch to other islands - story islands and harvesting islands where you gather raw materials/blocks that can all be found in-game, with a handful of items specific to each harvesting island - the Desert-themed island has a sunflower plant).

Hope that's helpful.

Re: Dragon Quest Builders 2 Will Have Four DLC Packs And A Season Pass

mjhopkins81

@RupeeClock

The DLC packs contain items you cannot receive through in-game progress. They're primarily decorative items that cannot be obtained by any other means, as well as a handful of joke weapons/outfits like the Slime Stick that basically perform or protect from minimal damage when used by the main character.

Also, these items can only be used on the story hub island, and don't impact the progress of the game in any way.
