Nintendo Switch was the best-selling games console of 2021 in the US, it's been confirmed.
The news comes from The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, who has shared a thread of US sales stats covering the month of December. Piscatella notes that while the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 were "effectively tied" on dollar sales for the month, Switch was the best-seller in terms of units sold.
Another successful month on the market means that Switch has finished 2021 as the US' leading console in terms of both unit sales (the number of consoles sold) and dollar sales (the total spent by consumers).
It was confirmed earlier today that Switch was also the UK's best-selling console of 2021, meaning we now know that Nintendo's system managed to outsell its console rivals across the US, UK and Japan last year.
Can we expect a similarly strong performance in 2022? Only twelve months until we find out.

Global Domination
I still play my v1 Switch daily
@blindsquarel People buy it no matter what because it had Nintendo on it <ignores WiiU, GC and Virtual Boy>
The Switch is everywhere in the States. The “Nintendo Switch is my way to play” commercials may sound corporately-created, but Nintendo owes its success to the fact that there is legitimately something for everyone to play, and there’s an argument for it being everywhere.

But Sonyguy9782 told me Switch was going to fail. This can't be right!
Imho the world doesn't need a successor to the Switch yet, with the OLED model Nintendo extended the console's life at least 2 more years, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Will see how things turn out when the Steam Deck hits the market, but I'm confident that while Nintendo keeps playing their own game they won't feel too much of an impact.
@Bl4ckb100d Steam Deck will be a hit with the PC gaming market, plus hardcore fans. It won’t have a big impact on the Switch since the two of them are miles apart. I’m looking forward to playing around with my Steam Deck and its OS (not putting Windows on it) to see this “handheld PC” in action. My OLED Switch isn’t going anywhere, which will still be my go-to device with my Xbox Series X. For PC games, I mainly stick to stuff you can’t play on a console (and it’s typically older).
Whenever Nintendo releases the next Switch (or whatever it’ll be called), I’ll get it too. Right now, the chip and passive component shortages are creating issues for this transition to the newer generation of systems. Nintendo was smart to pass on the Switch Pro and move forward to the next version. Hopefully, there will be ample amount of chips and components to manufacture it.
Nice! 2022 will be another fantastic year, especially with all of these Incredible Games coming out! I definitely see Nintendo switch outselling the DS.
@Vapeguy I've upgraded to a Nintendo Switch OLED.
But NintenDOOOMED. Jokes aside, that's some stellar momentum, best selling across some of the biggest regions in the world.
The inclusion of dollar sales strikes me as a bit arbitrary. PS5 may cost twice as much as Switch, but it doesn’t equate to a larger profit margin or anything.
Awww, I missed the trolls. 😢 Jokes aside, Nintendomination is awesome. That said, I hope Nintendo doesn't rest on their laurels with the success of the Switch. I hope the Switch 2 comes out the gate swinging in Holiday 2023 or Q1 2024.
@RobotReptile i think profit data on each console is a little bit harder to get, does Nintendo even officially announce what their profit margins for each console are?
For that matter does Sony announce what their loses are?
I think some websites speculate on such things but i don't think any of the big players share that actual data, personally i think they should but as overall sales data and cost per console is the only factual metric we have on that, it can't really be considered arbitrary if there is no other data to go on.
If oled was cheaper i would buy one. €300
I still play my 1st gen switch lol
@Medic_Alert @faint @Dr_Lugae
Doesn’t matter since the comment was removed but it was sarcasm, my fault for believing people could catch onto it.
@Medic_Alert
It’s all good ,just a comment on the internet
@The-Chosen-one The Switch OLED basically cost the same as the black 32gb model Wii U ($349.99 MSRP) so it wasn't anymore expensive and it had 64gb storage whereas Wii U only had 32gb. We're lucky the base Switch was cheaper than the Wii U.
This is the year I expect the Switch to reach maturity. Much less growth, however still very strong sales at the crest of it's sales wave (kinda adjusting for last year.). Could very well be the best selling console of 2022 and 23 again. Then as demand starts to fall for the last 2 years of it's life, we'll probably get a price cut and a look at what Nintendo are going to do next. So if Nintendo can keep momentum up (I mean, the OLED is doing work!), it's all gravy. If they overperform this year (which they very well could judging by the software line up) then I will be genuinely impressed and hats off to them!
Ninten truely is doomed.

Thank You Brie Larson🥰 Queen🙌
I love that I know it's Brie Larson in that picture even tho we can't see a face. Congrats Nintendo!
@BaeDanvers
@BaeDanvers I never considered Switch until I saw her Animal Crossing video . I think it's safe to say I was influenced .
Brie Larson selling me Decorte beauty products, Nintendo consoles and Nissan vehicles. TAKE ALL MY MONEY💸
@mrtopo I have over 46 AAA games on it.
I mean, let's be honest—had Sony figured out their PS5 supply issues, it might've outsold the Switch, but Sony can't seem to get it figured out, even after two years.

Switch will become the best selling console of all time
Another successful month on the market means that Switch has finished 2021 as the US' leading console in terms of both unit sales (the number of consoles sold) and dollar sales (the total spent by consumers).
But if you read GameInformer on Twitter their own Polling would show otherwise the opposite directions for Switch sales.

@mrtopo a True NintenDoomed fandom and Hater. Maybe you need time off the internet to see there's more to life then your own hostility towards others.
