@Dezzy I didn’t say they were infallible. The overall content they put out is great. All this is to say, one person giving this game a 7 means nothing. I don’t agree with the reviewer but ign have great contributors and it’s not fair to rubbish the good work they do.
So much IGN hate on here. Their Nintendo team are great and NVC podcast is highly recommended. The only thing trash about IGN is the gamer community who post edge lord comments in the comments.
I don’t recognise the guy who reviewed this game but I do have an issue with his critique. He writes that the central theme serves as purely window dressing and doesn’t greatly inform the game mechanics. I find this puzzling as nearly every level the main game has ton of creativity. The game is super inventive and the fact that so many ideas are explored keeps the game fresh.
I found the wire bug super useful. Quick recovery when knocked down. Can hang in the air to avoid sweeping floor attacks. Launch up to execute a downwards heavy head blow (really useful with the hammer weapon)
I usually only buy 3-5 big games a year and the rest are smaller indie titles.
To be honest if BOTW 2 is released this year along with MH Rise and the other MH game, Mario 3D world and Hollow Knight 2 and that for me is a pretty epic year.
@dugan it’s a shame for me because a lot of these games look like they have really tight combat mechanics and the pixel art is really good. I just have to keep telling myself they aren’t for me because I almost get caught up in the hype and waste money buying them.
Duo lingo Spanish. I’m currently in the relegation zone so I need to accrue a lot of points before the end of tomorrow so I can advance to diamond league or at least avoid moving back down to silver league.
This game has the most bizarre control set up in the world. Trigger buttons for melee attacks?
I changed that straight away and then had to glide of a cliff and plummeted to the ground almost dying lol. My config had disabled A for gliding.
I find this a small but impacting problem for me. I just played 10hours of monster Hunter where attack were Y & A. The game before that had attack as X&Y and now this. It’s not just the controls that vary so wildly either. It’s the level of customisation available. I remember thinking ‘thank god’ that I could change jump in BOTW from Y to B because that was a complete non starter. The built in control mapping on Switch is a fix but isn’t without its own problems.
When it comes to indies I’m firmly in the camp of celeste, hollow knight and Steam World Dig 2. Crafted levels with traditional progressional structures.
I bought Enter the Gungeon and tried Dead Cells this week for free and I just can’t stand starting from the beginning.
It is like the hate I would feel when I lost to a boss in Hollow Knight 15-20 times and had to spend 30 seconds getting back to the boss room from the checkpoint. Only in rogue lites it’s infinitely worse.
Graphically it looks like it sits somewhere between PS2 & PS3. Art style looks forgettable and gameplay looks boring. Nothing grabs me about this game. I think it will tank hard.
I could not get in to chronicles X. I remember it being unweildly and not very friendly.
I was so disappointed as someone who put in 150 hours in the wii game.
Xenoblade on Wii felt like more of a Nintendo game in the way it held your hand and taught you how to play. The wii U game felt like it just pushed you in and let you get on with it. I remember playing an hour and feeling absolutely nothing. That’s where I left it. Part of me wants to try again weirdly.
@SwitchForce lol. Im trying to picture a person speaking to another person face to face with such little respect over an opinion on video games. It’s truly amazing.
By the way, Zelda being a game developed in Japan is not a argument against it being more popular outside the region itself. As an argument it doesn’t hold much weight.
Remember when Zelda BOTW briefly had a greater that 1:1 attach ratio. Seems criminal that it has sold way less than 3 million in Japan considering the 17mill user base.
I know Zelda isn’t as popular in Japan and it’s still selling very well internationally but this is a once in a lifetime kind of game.
I so badly want a complete graphical remake of this game. Sony seem more willing to do this with their ip’s
This and Majora’s Mask in HD with updated graphics not increased resolution and slightly improved textures. Of all the games to that to they chose Wind Waker. Are you kidding
@HenFjo I’m all for diversity but some game devs tend to just randomly pull out an eclectic mix of accents for the sake of it and they always sound a little off.
Compare it to something like Game of Thrones, the accent choices were intentional and made sense. Southern plain accents for the capital and northern Yorkshire dialects for the north. There was a logic and it fed into the world building.
@Tyranexx I like chibli models in general but I have to side with others and say the characters models in this game don’t work for me. The town environments look amazing.
@BlackenedHalo after I wrote my first comment I thought to myself that I should have commented how the scripts felt like they are written by 13yo trying to write a school drama.
people comment that this is a staple of the genre to be celebrated and/or accepted but I think this is a weak defence and I find the dialogue really un engaging.
And if the dungeons are also poor I might as well play a game like FE or Advance wars where you go from one battle to the next
Tried the latest demo and after a few minutes I was done. I love the combat of these games and sunk 40/50 hours in the first one but then it hit me: the dungeons were terribly boring and the dialogue is soooooo bad. I was literally playing the game to level up the jobs but you had to level each one separately so experimenting was laborious
This new demo reminded me how bad the dialogue could be. Also, this obsession with regional uk accents to denote a fantasy RPG is DONE. I say this as someone from the uk who loves our accents.
@everynowandben fair enough. I feel like on-rails is really out of vogue and perhaps this game will not leave as many players content who remember and played the first one.
But if it turns out to be just the game fans want I’m happy for you. I hope future main titles do incorporate a camera feature like the one they just showed of for Bowsers Fury.
@everynowandben I’m not sure why the photography element couldn’t be fleshed out in an open world where you control the player. In fact surely it would be more exciting because you would have to find the hidden nesting spots or travel to the right mountain peaks during certain times/weather conditions to observe special behaviour of the Pokémon.
Taking a photo using the Mario odyssey system. Freeze frame and rotate around object, apply filters, stickers etc. Or use a similar system as BOTW and the animals are still moving. You could take selfie’s with Pokémon that are less hostile and scared of humans.
No sure why this exists. We have seen so many great camera modes integrated into main line games.
A main line Pokémon game with the Pokémon living in their natural habitat (feeding, playing, fighting) would allow the player to break away from the main story and capture the Pokémon with their camera. Plus you could have enjoyable side quests.
I wish Nintendo had full control of Pokémon. The Pokémon company seem stuck
Is Yoshiaki Koizumi still around at Nintendo? He was cool and had a street cred vibe about him in a very low key Japanese way. I liked the energy.
PS these consistent snarky comments about the articles that get posted need to stop. Are you going to pay a yearly subscription to your favourite game sites? No, I didn’t think so. Writers, editors web hosting and IT doesn’t pay for itself.
@masterLEON I presume the move to these top end SSDs means devs can get even sloppier? Unless the concept hinges around the one seen in the new Ratchet game (moving in and out of worlds on the fly)
@Quarth this year could go down as the switch’s best. If BOTW2 releases this year and is well received on top of the list of games you mentioned (especially MH Rise and stories) not forgetting the anniversary stuff. Switch sales could jump to shocking levels. It will be an interesting year for sure.
This game is one of my favourite Mario games of all time. Felt criminally underrated during its release.
The expectation from some in the comments that Nintendo as a dev and publisher should be rolling out fresh first party games nearly every other month to me, is a severely unrealistic expectation especially considering COVID.
That’s not entirely true. A lot of indie devs have gone on record to say their game has out performed the sales on steam and other platforms (sometimes even combined sales)
The current game in the Japanese charts is from Konami I believe and it has sold 300k, something like that
I said in another post but if devs put the right games on the platform they will perform. I honestly believe monster Hunter will shift at least 2 million globally this year. That is a perfect example of the right game on switch.
You are right that first party games outperform everything else and that is unique on Nintendo’s platform but hay they have the franchises.
I will state from the start that my knowledge of computing is next to none however, I have wondered if the reason some games can’t run on switch is because they were never efficiently coded in the first place.
I remember reading a piece from team Cherry who, if I remember correctly, chose to to back into the coding to optimise it to get Hollow Knight running just how they wanted on Switch. I think Nintendo utilises a similar strategy from the start (granted they understand their platforms the best)
Is it possible devs code games in a way that is so reliant on the power of current next gen systems that they can afford to be somewhat not optimised. So then porting to switch becomes problematic.
I know Witcher 3 on switch is not the prettiest thing but it runs and it’s a massive open world game with lots of NPCs. It handles lighting and shadows and draw distance etc. So I always scratch my head when for example, the team for Ori say they weren’t sure their 2D Metroidvania could run properly on switch. Am I missing something?
@JaxonH thanks for all the advice much appreciated. The auto sheath option I disabled and that improved things dramatically. I also pulled the camera out because it was too tight and I’m prone to nausea when playing first person games or games with certain camera set ups and that helped a lot too.
I took another shot at the intermediate beast and lasted a long time but it felt like I was no where near to killing it. I rode the beast ( although admittedly I didn’t make the best of this) I used the right shoulder button to trigger a red aura and unleash fast hits (I chose the two dagger class)
The beast fled 3 times and still wasn’t enough. My issue isn’t the blood borne style of gameplay. I don’t have much experience with these type of games but I understand and appreciate the concept. There are just way too many inputs and systems to manage at once. I will need to spend a lot of hours just to feel comfortable with basic controls and set up. You might be right that this franchise offers a very nuisance and in-depth combat system but it definitely doesn’t do a good job introducing newbies. Even the Tutorial in this demo wasn’t great. The dog mostly killed the beasts in the tutorial lol. I am enjoying myself more. Will persist tomorrow. That 30 play limit isn’t looking so generous :-/
I’m playing Monster Hunter. I feel like there is a game trapped inside this software that I would love if I could get to grips with it. One of my favourite parts of Xenoblade chronicles was finding the large beasts and slaying them.
This game is so unwieldy and unfriendly to new comers. And why is attack the Y button???? I keeping pressing x and end up stuck in an animation I wasnt intending. I appreciate why Nintendo throws in the slow tutorials at the start of their games.
Yes on the one hand this is concerning that Nintendo’s servers can’t handle the demand for a demo. Nintendo really need to ask some hard questions.
On the other hand, this could indicate that this game will fly of the shelves and really demonstrate to Japanese developers (at least) that focusing on switch specific games is a good investment.
For specific games it just seems like a no brainer to me. For example, I would have thought that Square would have factored in the switch when developing Kingdom Hearts main line games by now. Same for the new Tales game that is releasing on PS5 and Xbox. Mainline Persona. These brands would surely have a strong home, even more so than a game like Doom.
@BenAV I’m the complete opposite. Like if Nintendo decided to drop 30 trailers of BOTW2 from now until it releases I would definitely watch all of them multiple times. Even though I know it would be better to have less spoiled for me, I have no self control.
I’m a bit of both. Sometimes I love buying a game more than starting it. Some games on switch I have sunk hundreds of hours into like BOTW and ACNH. Others haven’t been opened like Xeno.
I almost bought Hades because of all the hype and the Xmas sale even though I know I hate the rogue lite element. I had to play a few minutes of Enter the Gungeon to remind myself why it’s not for me just to calm me down.
I’m getting vibes that the Pokémon company is quite resistant to making a strong overhaul of the main franchise so I expect very safe and predictable announcements next year. Happy to be proven wrong.
@RasandeRose don’t forget we must keep politics out of sport as well. And film stars and musicians shouldn’t use their platform. Keep it out of live performances and don’t use your social media platforms.
Cartoons teaching factually correct history is not necessarily political. Teaching kids that black cowboys existed and that black people helped invent stuff is just basic truth.
The fact that people would rather get upset that a cartoon covered this rather then interrogate why such truths are never touched upon is mind blowing.
@Menardi you’re talking about those domestic terrorists that form online communities right?
I totally agree with you.
When that man shot and killed so many people in New Zealand and filmed it and for others online to keep sharing it. Or that other man walked into a black church and another into a synagogue in the US and killed those unarmed worshipping civilians. Or the parkland shooting.
Let’s not forget those thugs I mean ‘vigilantes’ occupying the Malheur National Wildlife property so they could acquire more land.
And then those other terrorist that wanted to kidnap Michigan’s Governor.
These terrorist will not stop until civilisation as we know it is destroyed.
@Arkay quick question, what cities have been destroyed?
And when you say destroyed what’s the definition. I’m picturing Mad Max, am I’m leaning too dystopian? Has the local government stopped functioning?
And without seeming like I’m using “what aboutism” what are your general views on the Proud Boys. I’m noticing that people who fear BLM and Antifa as the end of civilisation don’t bring up the Proud Boys. Just curious.
@Arkay thanks for the recommendation. I didn’t know about these cartoons on Cartoon Network but they are really cool. Saw one just now about the white washing of historian figures. How black figures are completely erased from history.
Britain has mastered this and created a very selective curriculum. Very little time spent looking at our colonial past just that we ended slavery and Henry the Eighth.
What I noticed is that the cartoon I watched had 12k dislikes but what was incorrect within the cartoon.
It’s just troubling how many people are deeply rooted to protecting the status quo. And even factually correct cartoons are met with push back. Everything is met with pushback.
Cartoons shouldn’t teach kids about racism People should be allowed to be as racist and vile online with no restrictions BLM shouldn’t exist No kneeling in protest Elections are invalidated if the result is not the right one. Mad world
@Grot lol. I now have this image of kids playing games online listening to a gamer educating them about the damage of using racist and sexist terms online and then their father rushing in to cover their ears insisting they ignore the perversions they are hearing.
@Menardi it’s not funny or unheard of that stereotypes are considered more harmful when directed at particular groups. This is a well known topic that people have discussed and explained for decades.
There is a reason harmful stereotypes of say Jewish people are called out in a way that doesn’t apply to white brits.
As much as some might claim that white people are the ones truly oppressed they have never experienced mass discrimination for housing or employment. I can’t think of one negative stereotype that has been applied to the white race equivalent in any way to the familiar negative stereotypes of black people, Jewish people etc. Stereotypes that have endured for decades if not centuries.
I pretty sure most games that are multi plat will advertise the PC version at the forefront and have always done so. So the devs using PC footage to promote the game is nothing new and I never said it was. The people complaining are doing so because In game character models can look like virtue fighter 1 models before textures finally load up. The bugs that are crippling the game are so bad and the devs knew this which is why they placed an embargo on using console footage prior to the release day. That is unheard of.
The PS4 and Xbox were cited as platforms from the beginning so gamers should have had no reason to expect it not to run at a baseline level on their consoles. End of story on that particular point.
This was about gamers expectation. Gamers in general understand that graphical fidelity and resolution and frame rate is determined mostly by the power of a machine. So when I see the ray tracing trailers of cyberpunk I don’t expect that from a PS4 but I do expect the game not to crash repeatedly and have glaring bugs or uncontrollable pop up. At that point it doesn’t meet a baseline level of quality.

Re: The Monster Hunter Rise Demo Is So Popular It's Apparently Causing The Switch eShop To Struggle
Finally able to download
Re: Monster Hunter Rise "Digital Event" Promises New Details And Reveals On January 7
@BenAV I’m the complete opposite. Like if Nintendo decided to drop 30 trailers of BOTW2 from now until it releases I would definitely watch all of them multiple times. Even though I know it would be better to have less spoiled for me, I have no self control.
Re: Talking Point: Are You A Player Or Collector?
I’m a bit of both. Sometimes I love buying a game more than starting it. Some games on switch I have sunk hundreds of hours into like BOTW and ACNH. Others haven’t been opened like Xeno.
I almost bought Hades because of all the hype and the Xmas sale even though I know I hate the rogue lite element. I had to play a few minutes of Enter the Gungeon to remind myself why it’s not for me just to calm me down.
Re: Feature: What Can We Expect From Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary?
I’m getting vibes that the Pokémon company is quite resistant to making a strong overhaul of the main franchise so I expect very safe and predictable announcements next year. Happy to be proven wrong.
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
@RasandeRose don’t forget we must keep politics out of sport as well. And film stars and musicians shouldn’t use their platform. Keep it out of live performances and don’t use your social media platforms.
Cartoons teaching factually correct history is not necessarily political. Teaching kids that black cowboys existed and that black people helped invent stuff is just basic truth.
The fact that people would rather get upset that a cartoon covered this rather then interrogate why such truths are never touched upon is mind blowing.
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
@Arkay quick question, what cities have been destroyed?
And when you say destroyed what’s the definition. I’m picturing Mad Max, am I’m leaning too dystopian? Has the local government stopped functioning?
And without seeming like I’m using “what aboutism” what are your general views on the Proud Boys. I’m noticing that people who fear BLM and Antifa as the end of civilisation don’t bring up the Proud Boys. Just curious.
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
Cartoons shouldn’t teach kids about racism
People should be allowed to be as racist and vile online with no restrictions
BLM shouldn’t exist
No kneeling in protest
Elections are invalidated if the result is not the right one.
Mad world
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
@Grot lol. I now have this image of kids playing games online listening to a gamer educating them about the damage of using racist and sexist terms online and then their father rushing in to cover their ears insisting they ignore the perversions they are hearing.
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
Re: UK Charts: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sales Keep Rising, But Cyberpunk 2077 Goes Top
@Agramonte
Re: Nintendo, PlayStation And Xbox Announce A Shared Commitment To Safer Gaming
@RasandeRose I honestly couldn’t tell if this was straight up British sarcasm but I have a bad feeling you’re being sincere.
PS just noticed another of your comments and it literally could go either way. Both would be funny but for wildly different reasons.
